President's Corner My message is a little more lengthy than usual. For the NvFRW Spring Board meeting I was asked to present a summary of Club activities and accomplishments for the last quarter of 2012 through Spring 2013. I thought you should know what a wonderful job our club has done. So, here's my report to the Nevada State Federation of Republican Women. It is quite an honor to be involved with such an active, caring and dedicated group of women, and men, dedicated to strengthening and supporting the Republican Party. All committee positions were filled and the Chairs are busy at work with their various projects. We continue to follow the theme of "Preserving the Constitution," however, we have also spent considerable time on educating our members how to reach out to our legislators and impact the votes on bills before congress. Out Constitution Committee is one of the most active committees at this time. As well as meeting once a month to discuss relevant topics affecting our rights and issues that are infringing on Constitution intentions and laws. Our committee members continue to distribute Constitution handbooks to all 5th graders at each of the elementary schools in Douglas County, as well as put on assemblies at each school. Expanding on education, the committee held an essay contest at the high school level, with the topic: Electorate College, Failure or Failsafe. We had a tremendous response, and awarded $250 in awards. The emphasis of our club (which is a PAC) has always been to raise funds for our State and Local Republican candidates. Our major fundraiser is our annual St. Patrick's Dinner. We had another very successful dinner this year, and are well on our way to having significant funds to support our Republican candidates in the next election. Senator James Settelmeyer did an outstanding job as auctioneer once again this year, helping to make this a most profitable event. The corned beef was cooked by our members, and the potatoes, carrots, onions, were cooked by former Assemblyman Kelly Kite and his crew, and the dinner was served by the Douglas County Commissioners, as well as other elected officials. The Membership Committee has a goal to increase our membership to 100. We have a ways to go, but we are reaching out to as many as we can. Our Program Chairman, Shari James, is doing a marvelous job and we have had terrific speakers: Sean Cary, freelance writer, talk show host and political columnist; our Commissioners on issues they are following; and John Wagner and Janine Hansen, political lobbyists and more to come. University Regent Ron Knecht was the May speaker, as well as Sherry Dilley on women in politics. Douglas County Assessor, Doug Sonnemann, spoke in June and our July speaker will be State Assemblyman Jim Wheeler. We are in the planning phase of our annual Commemorative 9/11 Dinner, which is always such a touching event. We have an outstanding speaker lined up and will be inviting some members of the Armed Forces to attend as our guests. The first Dinner was held Sept. 12, 2001. President's Corner

My message is a little more lengthy than usual. For the NvFRW Spring Board meeting I was asked to

present a summary of Club activities and accomplishments for the last quarter of 2012 through Spring

2013. I thought you should know what a wonderful job our club has done. So, here's my report to the

Nevada State Federation of Republican Women.

It is quite an honor to be involved with such an active, caring and dedicated group of women, and

men, dedicated to strengthening and supporting the Republican Party.

All committee positions were filled and the Chairs are busy at work with their various projects. We

continue to follow the theme of "Preserving the Constitution," however, we have also spent

considerable time on educating our members how to reach out to our legislators and impact the votes

on bills before congress. Out Constitution Committee is one of the most active committees at this time.

As well as meeting once a month to discuss relevant topics affecting our rights and issues that are

infringing on Constitution intentions and laws. Our committee members continue to distribute

Constitution handbooks to all 5th graders at each of the elementary schools in Douglas County, as well

as put on assemblies at each school. Expanding on education, the committee held an essay contest at

the high school level, with the topic: Electorate College, Failure or Failsafe. We had a tremendous

response, and awarded $250 in awards.

The emphasis of our club (which is a PAC) has always been to raise funds for our State and Local

Republican candidates. Our major fundraiser is our annual St. Patrick's Dinner. We had another very

successful dinner this year, and are well on our way to having significant funds to support our

Republican candidates in the next election. Senator James Settelmeyer did an outstanding job as

auctioneer once again this year, helping to make this a most profitable event. The corned beef was

cooked by our members, and the potatoes, carrots, onions, were cooked by former Assemblyman Kelly

Kite and his crew, and the dinner was served by the Douglas County Commissioners, as well as other

elected officials.

The Membership Committee has a goal to increase our membership to 100. We have a ways to go,

but we are reaching out to as many as we can. Our Program Chairman, Shari James, is doing a

marvelous job and we have had terrific speakers: Sean Cary, freelance writer, talk show host and

political columnist; our Commissioners on issues they are following; and John Wagner and Janine

Hansen, political lobbyists and more to come. University Regent Ron Knecht was the May speaker, as

well as Sherry Dilley on women in politics. Douglas County Assessor, Doug Sonnemann, spoke in June

and our July speaker will be State Assemblyman Jim Wheeler.

We are in the planning phase of our annual Commemorative 9/11 Dinner, which is always such a

touching event. We have an outstanding speaker lined up and will be inviting some members of the

Armed Forces to attend as our guests. The first Dinner was held Sept. 12, 2001.

GETTING TO KNOW

KATHRYN Z. ZOGORSKI The beach area of Los Angeles was home to

my husband Tom and I for almost 40 years

before retiring to the beautiful Carson Valley

eight years ago. Both of us had very

satisfying, although extremely demanding,

careers in the aerospace industry. I headed up

the Contracts organization for various satellite

programs at TRW, which was acquired by

Northrop Grumman just before I retired. My

work afforded me the opportunity to travel

worldwide for my company, which fostered

my love of travel. I've visited most of the

States in our great country as well as many

countries in five of the seven continents.

I'm originally from a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, and I received my undergraduate degree

from Ohio University. My masters came later from California State University. Having

grown up as a tomboy to keep up with my brothers, I continue to enjoy participating in

and watching many different sports. It was important for Tom and I to retire to a place

where we could pursue our hobbies of snow skiing, golfing, fishing, etc. without having

to drive the five plus hours to which we were accustomed while living in L.A.

Due to gentle persuasions from neighbors Diane Gordon, Donna Baushke and Stephanie

King, I decided to become a full member of SNRW, an associate member of DCRW, and I

later became active with the Central Committee. It is so gratifying to be living in an area

where like minded individuals work, play and pray together. Tom and I are happy to be

involved in our community by volunteering at elementary schools, being active in our

church, working for many fund raising efforts for veterans, seniors and children through

the Elks organization, and helping out where we can for other worthwhile causes.

We’re looking forward to the birth of our first grandchild in October.

RECOMMENDED READING Nancy Brisack recommends Glenn Beck's, The Overton

Window, 2010, Mercury Arts Radio, Inc. (a Division of

Simon & Schuster, Inc.). Nancy describes the book as a real

eye-opener. She observes that it is scary to look back and

see how liberal progressives have changed the education and

thus the thoughts of the last two or three generations. Liberal progressives have moved the

window and changed the debate as explained in the portion of the book jacket quoted below

by Nancy:

"There is a powerful technique called the Overton Window that can shape our lives, our

laws, and our future. It works by manipulating public perception so that ideas previously

thought of as radical begin to seem acceptable over time. Move the Window and you change

the debate. Change the debate and you change the country. The Overton Window will

educate, enlighten, and ....entertain with twists and revelations no one will see coming."

Sandy Offenstein advises that The Overton Window is the next book she will be reading.

Sandy already has read Glenn Beck’s, Agenda 21. She found it very well-written and

informative, and recommends it.

Your Constitution Committee invites your recommendations so that we can pass them along

to our members. This year we have received some intriguing recommendations. Please

keep them coming and we will keep passing them along.

The Constitution Committee

DCRCC Valley Vice Chair Thanks SNRW In order to maintain party visibility here in Douglas County it is essential that we keep our

Republican Headquarters open. To do this effectively and efficiently requires the assistance

of volunteers. Therefore, I am especially grateful to the SNRW members and associates

who have stepped up to the plate and volunteered to staff Headquarters during the past few

months.

These Members include Dorette Caldana, Jill Dimock, Shari James, Helen Jamme, Cheryl

Kelley, Commissioner Nancy McDermid, Kory Miller, Agnes Muszynska, Sharon O’Berg,

Joyce Richardson, Linda Ruisi and Kathryn Zogorski. SNRW Associate Members Marco

Caldana, Lynn Muzzy, Bob O’Berg, Joe Ruisi and Carl Schnock have staffed Headquarters

too. Our President, Nancy Jarvis, Sally Wiley and Commissioner Barry Penzel will be

among those on duty at Headquarters in August.

If you have a Republican friend who has not yet registered to vote, let your friend know

that Headquarters is the place to go to register. If you are looking for a good book with a

political flavor, if you would like to purchase bumper stickers or t-shirts, or if you have an

idea to share, stop by our Headquarters located at 1609 US Hwy 395 in Minden, (enter the

driveway at the intersection of Buckeye and Water Street). Headquarters currently is open

on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on

Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The new DCRCC executive board now has been in office for about 5 months. To carry out

the work required to keep good conservative Republicans in office, new DCRCC members

are needed in most of our precincts. If you would like to be a part of an organization that

makes a difference in Douglas County, and in Nevada, drop in at our next meeting. We

meet on the second Thursday evening of the month at Headquarters, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

I am just getting my feet wet as DCRCC Valley Vice Chair, and I still have a great deal to

learn. Of course, as some of you may recall I have gotten my feet wet before.

Thanks again,

Mary Porter, Valley Vice Chair
