Greenville fth graders participate in Mini Medical School

GREENVILLE On Thursday, Janu-ry 20th, fth graders at Baldwin Heightslementary school experienced some-

hing few if any- 10 and 11 year olds do performing surgery.

Baldwin Heights Elementary teacherindy Hepinstall has taught fth grade

tudents for 17 years, 10 at Baldwin

eights. Annually, she teaches a sciencenit focusing on the human body, includ-

ing how each of the bodys systems func-tions. This year, shes making this unitdecidedly more hands-on in nature.

Last Spring, Hepinstall came across anews story featured by a local televisionstation, proling a school in New Yorkthat had partnered with local physiciansto implement a Mini Medical School.

The school, P.S. 4 Duke Ellington Schoolin Manhattan, New York, created replicas

of the human body out of everyday mate-rials, such as clay and paper mach. Theythen worked with local doctors to performmock surgeries and procedures on them.

Inspired, Hepinstall saw this exampleas an opportunity to expand her own hu-man body unit and also partner withGreenvilles local hospital, SpectrumHealth United Hospital. She soon contact-ed Greenville Public Schools Superinten-dent, Pete Haines, who, in turn, was ableto assist in connecting Hepinstall with key

individuals from Spectrum Health UnitedHospital. Together, they formed a plan to

customize and implement a similar pro-gram at Baldwin Heights in early 2011.

Hepinstalls Mini Medical School lastsapproximately four weeks. During therst few weeks, students will build replicabody frames and organs out of a variety ofmaterials in order to deepen their learn-ing how each works in the bodys systemand affects the entire human body. Thefth graders will be assisted by parent vol-unteers, school nurses and art teachers tocomplete their human creations.

was sworn into ofce at the Capitol yester-day at noon, ofcially taking his place as amember of the 96th state legislature, rep-resenting Michigans 70th House District.

Outman, a small business owner, waselected to his House seat in November. Thiswill be his rst term in the State House.

It hasnt hit me yet, but Im taking it

all in and going with the ow, Outmansaid.

Committee assignments were also dis-tributed. Outman will sit on the Agricul-ture, Energy and Technology, and Redis-tricting and Elections committees.

It is a great honor to serve on thesethree important committees. Coming froman agricultural district and background, I

will be able to contribute immensely. Out-man said. At this point, our state needsa comprehensive energy and technologyplan. I look forward to working with mycolleagues to usher in a new era of devel-opment in Michigan.

The rst place winner of the Sled Deco-rating Contest sums up the festive attitudefor Howard Citys 2nd Annual Winterfest,held Jan. 14 and 15. Outside IS the best side.With many new activities added to the roster,Winterfest was a great antidote for the win-ter blues. There was fun to be had by all whochose to brave the cold, snowy weather.

The pancake breakfast got us started Sat-urday morning...we could fuel up with good,

hot food to sustain us for the chilly day. Thebusinesses and residents put on a Snowmanand Winter Display scene to put us in themood.

The kids had a variety of events to choosefrom with Community Snow Fort Building,Snowball Slingshot, Target Shooting, SnowPainting, Coloring at the Library, a sleddinghill and Sled Decorating Contest and a Pa-rade which ended at the Library.

The adults had a Treasure Hunt, Tug oWar, 4-Person Wooden Ski Team Race, Fro-zen Chicken Bowling and a Team Bed Race.There was a Euchre Tournament, an Enter-tainment Tent and Hot Bands with BluegrassJams.

The Chili Cook-off kept us warm and cozywith full bellies while we waited for a winnerto be picked. The Penguin Duck Race had us

all standing along the frozen banks of the riv-er waiting to see who the lucky winner was.

We had a Vintage Snowmobile Show, aSnowmobile Fun Run and the Blessed HellRide to Cadillac and back. You could also talkto the DNR and the Michigan Snowmobile Assoc. or take a Michigan Snow RunnersSnowmobile Safety Class.

We hope you had a chance to get out andsee the many fun things to help with the win-ter blahs. If you didnt be sure to put us on theschedule for next year, because we know that

its only going to get better and better.So remember, Outside IS the best side.

More on the Winterfest

The 2nd Annual Winterfest had its 1st Annual Sled Decorating Contest sponsoredby Kindel and Company and the Muse Dance Academy. The judges were impressed withthe creative sleds and creative kids whoturned out for the contest. The Parade of thesleds then went down main street, turned atthe Post Ofce, went down Williams Streetand ended at the Library.

First place won $15 cash, a webkin, ahamster, a squishy pet, a mini gyroscope,silly bands, a free pizza from Pizza Time, and

charms for the silly bands.Second place won $10 cash, a webkin, ahamster, a squishy caterpeller, a mini gyro-scope, silly bands, and a free pizza from PizzaTime.

Third place won $5 cash, a webkin, ahamster, a squishy ball, a mini gyroscope,silly bands, and a free pizza from Pizza Time.

Each participant received a webkin andsilly bands.

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Vicky Paulen.

Treasurers Report: Treasurer Linda G. passed out an updated report. Betty M. made a motion to

accept the Treasurers report as presented, seconded by Brenda B. All approved.

Directors Report: Janice W.

1. Reported to the group that sales from the Used Book Cart have been steady during the

first two months of operation. The proceeds from the book sale are being used to purchase

audio books for kids.2. Asked the group if they would like to sponsor an Adult Winter Reading Program and supply

the prizes for it. Renae B. volunteered to work on this project. Motion by Marjorie M.

to have Janice proceed with this program, seconded by Brenda B. All approved.

3. Reported Winterfest is taking place this weekend.

Publicity Report: Arlene B. was absent today so there was no publicity report given.

Facebook: Renae B. reported she has put pictures of the December Home Tour on our Facebook page.

OLD BUSINESS

Bake Sale and Gold Sale Report: This years bake sale was a success and brought in $211. In addition,

the gold sale netted $200

2011 Quilt Meeting: The quilt committee met and Linda G. reported the quilt chosen for this years

project will be a queen size Civil War quilt. In addition, there will be a lap size quilt raffled off at the

Harvest Festival in September. It was decided the committee members will make the blocks for the quilt

and will have Esther from Patchwork Dreams do the quilting. The target date for this to be completed

will be May.

Review of FOL meeting date: In October, it was decided to have a 3 month trial of changing the FOLmeeting day from Wednesday to Friday. After a discussion, a vote was taken and a majority of members

present wanted it changed back to Wednesday.

NEW BUSINESS

Officers and Committees for 2011: A nomination committee presented a slate of officers for the prsent

calendar year. Brenda B. reported the following positions: President, Vicky P., Vice President, Chris P.,

Secretary, Judy P., Treasurer, Linda G. and the position of Publicity Chairman will remain open at this

time.Motion by Renae B. to accept the slate of officers, seconded by Marjorie M. All approved.

OTHER BUSINESS

FOML meeting in Grand Rapids: Vicki reminded the membership there will be a meeting of the

Friends of the Michigan Libraries at the Kentwood Branch of the Kent District Library in Grand Rapids

on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. She encouraged everyone to consider attending.

Book Club: The book for February is Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland. The book discussion

will take place on Monday, February 7, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. in the Library Reeding Room. Everyone is

encourage to read the book and join in on the discussion.

Sand Lake/Nelson Township Friends of the LibraryFriends of the Sand Lake/Nelson Township Library ended the year of 2010

by donating $25,000.00 (twenty-five-thousand dollars) to Nelson Townshiptoward the reduction of the balance due on the mortgage of the library. Sincethe construction of the new facility, which was completed in 2007, the Friends

have contributed $55,000.00 toward reduction of the mortgage debt. Land-scaping and development and maintenance of the prairie surrounding the li-brary are also high on the Friends list of goals.

Since 2007 $31,600.00 (thirty-one-six-hundred dollars) has gone toward plant-

ing trees and shrubbery, improving the prairie and developing a rain gardennorth of the library. Last fall the donor bricks were laid around the flagpoleand along the sidewalk leading to the library. Bricks in the project were pur-

chased: in honor of veterans and those in military service; In memory of those

no longer with us; By organizations wishing to be remembered; and familiesand individuals. Contributions for additional bricks may still be made at the

library. Bricks are $50.00 each and may contain up to 3 lines of engraving.

New officers installed at the January meeting were: President Maureen Ma-honey, Vice President Laura Hoffman, Secretary Carol Barber, Treasurer Dor-othy Bishop and Trustees Judy Kruithoff, Fran Daniels, and Jean Anderson.

Meetings are held at the library in January, March, May, July, September andNovember on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00 a.m. The organi-
