New camera aids physicians inmaking more informed decisions inevaluation of heart, cancer, other

    diseases

GREENVILLE Spectrum HealthUnited Hospital proudly announces theopening of a newly expanded nuclearmedicine suite, featuring the BrightViewnuclear imaging system or gamma cam-era from Philips Healthcare. With thecamera, staff can perform non-invasive,

ighly advanced diagnostic imaging thatcan be used for diagnosis and treatmentplanning.

Unlike some imaging tests, nuclear im-aging allows clinicians to see how a partof the body is functioning at the metabolicevel. This improved diagnostic confidence

may alter the course of action and improve

patient care. For instance, a patient may be able to avoid a biopsy or an invasivesurgical procedure.

Nuclear imaging is an important di-agnostic technology for heart and vas-cular conditions as well as various formsof cancer. It is also extremely useful forother common applications such as bone, pulmonary, brain, thyroid, and renal im-aging.

The advanced system allows cliniciansto perform a powerful type of nuclear im-aging called SPECT Single Photon Emis-sion Computed Tomography that allows visualization of activity within structuresdeep inside the body. SPECT is particular-ly useful for cardiology, brain, and someorthopedic and oncology applications. Itgenerates 3D images whereas non-SPECT,or planar imaging, consists of 2D snap-shots or moving images of physiology.

Spectrum Health United Hospital adds advanced Nuclear Diagnostic Imaging

nity who wishes to express their view of a certain issue. Letters

The Tri County High School Bowling Pro-gram is always looking for support. In responseto their needs Tues. Night Live Womens Leaguedonated the profits from their 50/50 draw-ing from one night of bowling. The generousamount of $48 was donated to the program.Thank you Tues. Night Bowling for steppingup. If other leagues want to consider a dona-tion, talk to Greg. It is for a good cause.

There may have been a slow start to the yearscore wise but things are heating up now. The

Leader Board is filling up with very few spac-es in some categories, and in some categories, scores are being knocked off. Remember we willhost the Second Annual Womens Leader BoardTournament at the conclusion of the bowlingseason. If you are still on the Leader Board andare a sanctioned woman bowler, you will be in-vited to bowl. Last year was enjoyed by all butespecially by those winning money. However, everyone took a prize home due to the generousdonations of the local businesses. With 6 to 8weeks left, there is still time to shake things upon the Leader Board. Good Luck in your finalweeks.

Here are some of the accomplishments onand off the Leader Board:

There was 3 triple scores reported to GutterTalk: Jamie Deboer had a triple of 105, Ellen Wolowicz had a triple of 100 and June Davisa triple of 113. Tough Splits picked up: GaryBehrenwald picked up the big one 7/10, TrishaDings 4/6/7 and Amy Stevens 3/6/8. Some ofthe notable scores are: Eileen Hamilton bowleda 201, Dylan Buchanan bowled his first 200with a 222 and followed up the next week witha 224. Stephanie Stressman with an average of103 bowled a 192, Cassie Vogt with a 68 averagebowled a 108 and Carol Howe with a 54 average bowled a 113. Traci Nickels (avg. 118) bowled100 over series average with a score of 455 and

had a game of 189. Deb Behrenwald had a cleansweep.

LETTER TO THE EDITORNo fair shakes

    allowed?

TO THE EDITOR:By now you have received

this years property tax ap-praisal/assessments. If youthink you got a fair shake, thinkagain. You could take your ob-jections to the board of review, but I believe there are problems

in the makeup of its five mem- bers which could make this apointless exercise. Three of themembers are Rich Stevens, DonBowen and Paul Rehfuss, withDennis Hess as alternate. They were all automatically re-ap-pointed by the township boardmembers at Februarys meet-ing. This was done without thebenefit of placing an ad in thepaper, asking for new blood tokeep the board of review im-partial. Two other members ofthe board of review are town-ship employees, Keith Grannis, township supervisor, who is thesecretary, and Ralph Hauen-stein, who is deputy assessor

and land division administra-tor you can expect both ofthem to side with the township.Even if you remove Ralph orKeith and replace one of themwith the alternate Dennis Hess,I personally dont believe thiswill improve things.

Then, if thats not enough, you have another townshipemployee, Beverly Stedman, who is the township assessor aswell as the wife of our townshiptreasurer, Roger Stedman whooffers her opinion when youare presenting your case to the board of review. In addition,

two board of review members,Keith and Ralph, have, in myopinion, a conflict of interest because of their jobs with thetownship: Keith Grannis istownship supervisor whose du-ties consist of tax allocation, board budget, township budget, and appointing some commis-sion members; Ralph Hauen-stein is the township deputyassessor. Both of these peopleinject their opinions while youare pleading your case beforethe board. These three people(Beverly, Keith and Ralph) areall in jobs that require moretax revenue, not less. So, it is intheir interests to keep assess-ments high which will bringmore tax dollars. It is hard toimagine they would argue foless revenue by lowering youassessment. How can this helpthe citizen who is contestingtheir assessment? It cant.

Just so there is no misun-derstanding the basis for mycomplaint, after last year real-izing how corrupt this processis, I had our properties inde-pendently appraised only todiscover both appraisals weresubstantially lower than thetownships. So I have appealedto the Michigan Tax Tribunal the case will be heard in Aprilof this year. The appraisal costme $250, but I feel it was worthit because it was done by anobjective professional with noconnection to the township.

This letter is strictly myown opinion you have to de-cide for yourself how fair youre being treated by your electedtownship officials.

The baby boomer generation meaning people ages 48-

66 is the largest 18 year generation in the U.S. Babyboomers were born starting in 1946, after World War

    Two ended.

Music to the ears. The U.S. experienced an economicboom after the Big War. It was the aftermath of war partly

because soldiers came home to demand more goods and

services, which were in short supply. While soldiers hadbeen away, factories had been converted to making tanks,

guns, supplies, bombs. The countrys infrastructure was

failing. Not enough labor and material to keep it up. But

in 1946, soldiers and civilians began to repair/rebuild/produce. More and better roads and utilities meant a

better life. Everyone bought cars, telephones, cars, TVs,cars and automatic refrigerators. Lots of work. Money

flowed from providers and suppliers, to employees andconsumers, to governments and municipalities (in the

form of taxes on all that earned income, and on newly

purchased property). Families in good economic timesmeant goods and services, and babies, flooded the

    country. All was well.

Planning future care. Legislators understood that the

adult population, and all those new babies someday, would need help with medical care and retirement. And

money was flowing into government coffers. So careprograms were beefed up for future generations. Money

was set aside and invested for them. Medicare kicked

into high gear immediately, helping all people ages 65and older to afford at least some health care. And all was

    still well.

The best laid plan. But nobody predicted how clever

humankind would be. We figured out how to replacehearts, grow livers and fingertips, stop prostrate cancer,

control the effects of diabetes, lower cholesterol,

medicate hypertension and, basically, how to outfoxthe grim reaper. As a result of awesome scientists, baby

boomers and their children live much longer than everexpected. They now face two crises: the Medigap crisis

and the Help crisis. Alls not so well now.

Consider Grandma. Age 79, with beginning first stage

dementia and diabetes, using a walker, but otherwisehealthy enough to live until 85 or longer. Her two

neighbors stop in daily. She gets meals brought in. Her

oldest daughter visits daily. Grandmas drugs cost hermoney out-of-pocket. The $110,000 Grandpa had in the

bank when he died at age 71 is long gone. Grandma needs

help for her out of pocket costs for upcoming hip surgery,

rehab, therapy, a Hoyer lift, and someone to change herand feed her until she can use her walker again.

The Medigap crisis. The Medigap crisis exists for

low-income, low assets, people aged 65 and older (andwe women live to 86 now, many living to 100, so its

worse for us) who need more health and medical care

than what Medicare will pay for. Ill let the Presidentand the Republican nominee debate Grandmas drug and

    Medigap crisis, later this year.

The Help crisis. But while shes beaten the reaper out of

his due date by living years longer, Grandma doesntget a full hall pass, really. Science has just postponed her

date. Today, Grandmas family members children aged56-75, and grandchildren ages 35-48 - are discussing

whos going to look after Grandma during her rehab for

four months, then stay on until her dementia progressesand she starts to wander away. And what after then?

Pay the piper. Grandma has a Help crisis. She will need

assistance in-home or in a facility, shortly. Who can help? And who will pay for it?

Long term care insurance. Theres some but not much

help for Grandma. But theres a solution for you. Long

term care insurance. Buy it while you are 30 to 49, whenpremiums are low a couple hundred $ per year at age

    40. Costs are often tax-deductible too. Under Michigan

statutes, long term care insurance plans can cover rentfor people of all ages for at least 12 consecutive

months on an expense-incurred.or other basisformedically necessary diagnostic, preventive, therapeutic,

rehabilitative, maintenance, personal or custodial care

services provided in a setting, including an assisted livingfacility operating legally in this state, but not including

an acute care unit of a hospital. And it shall cover

intermediate/basic care, Alzheimers disease and relateddisorders. See Michigans law 500.3901. Buy at least

four years coverage. Based on some national statistics, I

recall 1 in four people by age 85 will have spent 3.5 yearsin an assisted living facility. Make all well for you and

    your own family.
