For many Americans the warmerweather of spring means its time to focuson all those home improvement projectsthat would be inconvenient during win-ter.

Adding an extension, sanding woodenoors or replacing a roof are a lot eas-ier when youre not worried about theweather and diminished day light. Also,

contractors are less likely to have weath-er-related delays that blow timelines, making spring renovations run moresmoothly.

Here are some home improvementprojects you may want to start this sea-son:n Replace the Roof: If your roof is

starting to leak or you notice dramaticincreases in heating or cooling bills, itmay be time to replace it. The best timeto do so is when the weather is warm anddry. Keep in mind the U.S. Department ofEnergy recommends light roong colors, which will keep down cooling costs andhelp reduce global warming. For moreenergy-saving home improvement tips, visit www.energy.gov.

n Check the Perimeter: Inspect yourhomes exterior, making sure to checkyour siding. Mold and cracks can be a signyou need to re-paint or replace boards. Also, now may be a good time to repaveyour driveway. Asphalt needs the rightfactors of temperature and moisture toset properly. Better weather leads to bet-ter driveways.n Add a Fireplace: Fireplaces are

great focal points to any home, and nowhomeowners can double their impact byadding see-through replaces that can beinstalled between rooms or even to warma patio. Versatile replaces, like the Mon-tebello See-Through by Lennox HearthProducts, can be installed between akitchen and dining room or between a liv-ing room and patio, creating a dramatic

effect. You can learn more at www.len-nox.com.

An indoor/outdoor installment is agreat way to enjoy your replace year-round, says Bill Wetzel, product manag-er of Fireplace Systems for Lennox. Afterall, who wants to spend money on homeimprovements you can only use half theyear?n Tinker with Plumbing: Because

bathroom and kitchen renovations oftenrequire plumbing changes, the warmer

months are the best for these projects.Nows the ideal time to expand that half-bathroom with a shower stall, or to up-grade your master bathroom with a whirl-pool tub. And there are many choices ofeco-friendly xtures from such brands asDelta, Kohler, American Standard andothers.n Install Skylights: With longer days

and clear, starry nights, its the season forgazing at the sky. But allergens can makesky gazing difcult for some. Consider in-

stalling skylights in your home this sea-son.n Sand the Floor: Most people think

of oor maintenance as a cool weather ac-tivity, but oor sanding kicks up incred-ible amounts of dust. In warmer weather, you can throw open doors and windowsand set up fans to suck the dust outward.

The better weather makes almost allhome improvement projects more enjoy-able. So take advantage of the season toupgrade your home!

As the days get longer, theresnothing like barbequing and en-tertaining friends on your deck. But before you pass out thoseinvitations, make sure your deckhas weathered the winter and isready for its seasonal duty.

The abuse a deck surfacetakes from the weather, foot

trafc, barbeques, and food anddrink spills can create both sur-face and structural problems.

To make your deck last, clean it thoroughly every one totwo years and re-stain every twoto four years, says Mark Clem-ent, host of the radio programMyFixitUpLife. It also helps ifyour deck is made from a natu-ral, durable wood, such as West-ern Red Cedar, which holds oilbased nishes for an extendedperiod of time.

Heres how to get your deckready for use:

n Clear Out: Clear all fur-niture and potted plants off the

deck. Then inspect the deck fordirt and pollen buildup. Sweepit clean of debris that may havefallen during winter. For safetyssake, make sure there are nonails sticking up from the deckor from any posts.

n Floss Between Planks:Clean between the planks andboards of any horizontal surfacesso rain can drain and air can owbetween them. Reducing stand-ing water and increasing airowwill limit the amount of mois-ture that can collect and stay onthe surface of the plank, therebymaking your deck last longer.

n Keep the Finish Sharp:Application of a quality wood

stain or nish and periodic re-treatment over time will preventdiscoloration and degradation ofyour deck and extend the woodslifespan. Keep in mind that natu-ral woods that are sustainableand durable, such as real cedar, can take and retain a variety ofstains and nishes for more ex-tended periods. Such woods are

natural looking, as opposed tothe faux nishes used on man-

made composite products.n Elevate Planters: Direct

contact between planter boxesand wooden surfaces can trapmoisture and leave stains. El-evating them or placing them onrollers will release the moistureand make them easier to rear-range.

    nBeware of Welcome Mats:

Mats can collect moisture anddry out too slowly, which can

lead to water damage and/orwood rot. After precipitation, besure to dry out the mat and allowthe deck to dry.

nWatch Out for Your Grill:Grease from your grill is hazard-ous to your deck, so place it in aninconspicuous spot with a hardrubber door mat underneath itto keep your deck free of stains.

If grease drips onto your deck, use a household cleaner to wipe

it clean. For more advice on caring for

decks, visit www.wrcla.org.Its easy to forget that decks

need maintenance and care justlike your lawn or roof, saysClement By performing routinechecks and taking care of thewarning signs, homeowners canextend the life of their decks so

they can be enjoyed for years tocome.

In the spring of 1962 Sand Lake High School and Howard

City Community Schools (both K-12 grade schools) cametogether to form Tri County Area Schools. Below are somefun facts about each school, before and after the merge.

Sand Lake School History:In the 1957 Wildcat Yearbook (Sand Lake High School)

this building is pictured along with the statement, "This four-room school was built in 1907 in the center of town, but onlythree rooms were used. This was the fi rst school known as theSand Lake High school."

There was a school built before the pictured building. In1872, Sand Lake built its fi rst one-room school. It was laterused as the fi rst Catholic Church in Sand Lake.Howard City School History:

In the 1954-55 Howard City Community Schools StudentHandbook it reads, "Citizenship: We have very few rules andregulations governing the conduct of students in Howard CityHigh School. The only thing that is to be expected of you is,that you conduct yourself as a lady or gentleman at all times, not only while in school but also on the street or whereveryou may be. Remember that as a student of this school you arealso a representative of this school, and people will judge yourschool and your schoolmates by your actions. All of us liketo live and work in a clean place. Your care of your personalproperty as well as the school property will insure you of thiskind of cleanliness. Do your share in picking up paper and

keeping the rooms tidy and you will be happier for havingdone it and will give others a better impression of you."TC School History:

In August of 1969, the Howard City Record publisheda full page of the upcoming fi rst day of school includingannouncements, bus routes (listing last names of each childriding), and faculty names and information. The page revealshow times and prices have changed. In one announcement, under the hot lunch heading, it reads, Hot lunch and specialmilk prices will remain the same for the time being. Hot lunchmay be purchased by the week for $1.50 or by the day for$.35. Milk will be four cents per unit. The special sandwichline at the high school will continue to be available.

The Art of BeingI recently read The Art of Being by Dennis Merrit Jones, DD. In this book he talks about 7 Be-Attitudes

which I think are worth sharing. His summary is that these are Seven Ways of Being that Will Alter theAltitude of Your Attitude.

    1. Be Present in Every Moment. You are invited to be rather than to do.

    2. Be Willing to Listen to your Intuitive Self and the Guidance it Offers. The primary difference betweenthe animals and us is that they cannot choose to ignore that guidance, but we can and often do ignoreit. When we ignore it, we often suffer the consequences of that choice. Hearing and listening are twodifferent functions.

    3. Be Open and Transparent in your Communications. Transparency means you have nothing to hide, nothing to defend, and nothing to fear.

    4. Be of Service to Others. A life of wholeness will never be obtained until you offer the whole of yourselfto the whole of life.

    5. Be Generous and Grateful. Someone who has developed the attitude of gratitude and generosity isfi rst and foremost established in an att itude of I am enough. There is an inherent intelligence in Naturethat knows there is always enough for everyone.

    6. Be Reverent. We begin to awaken to that idea that there is really no place where Gods presencebegins and ends.

    7. Be Unconditionally Loving. Unconditional means there are no conditions attached. It is tempting to draw circles around certain people that are more lovable anddeserving of our love than others. Focus on what someone is, not on what they aredoing.

How we think and how we think about ourselves has a huge impact on our physicalhealth. Being some or all of these seven attitudes will greatly improve the quality andquantity of your life.

My thanks to Dennis Merrit Jones for these insights.
