Night at the Rascals

From the

Directors Chair

Our article last month kind of warned you of what was to come, but it did not tell us the fun that was about to happen. The Second Annual Friendship Village Motor-ist Awareness Event was a great success, the weather was good (a little warm) and Chapter O came to support the event. We had 12 motorcycles and 21 GWRRA members. Rico and Linda brought motorcade into the facility for our parade around the property, this year we had more folks aware we were coming. We had the Bike Blessing and bike display, music, awesome Chicago Hot Dogs and did I mention ice cream. If you have never had a Chicago hot dog, you are missing out.

The pastor even gave Marty Hall’s bike a special blessing for his two week trip, we will hear about later. The residents number about 400, I think they all had a chance to come out and talk to each of us about our motorcycles and yes about 50 resi-dents took rides. Carl Mungenast (Dave’s brother) is a resident, he brought out his Spyder; but the best was when he brought out his off the road Seg-way, he says that is his wheelchair. Team W2

thanks Rico and Linda Della Croce, Friendship Village Management and the pastor for all their efforts putting this together allowing us an opportunity to share our passion with their residents. Thank you Chapter O for your support, each Chapter W2 member that came out to share this experience, you are “Making a Difference”. And yes there will be a Third Annual Friendship Village Bike Blessing and Display next year, discussions are already started; maybe we need to figure out even more we can do, the sky is the limit. Next on the agenda the first Chapter O & W2 Night at the Rascals Motorist Awareness Event, or should I say the perfect night to enjoy. The week before it was 95°F+, the night of the ball-game it was in the 70°F’s. What a turn out Chapter O, W2 and Z converged upon the Car Shield Field with 38 motorcycles and approxi-mately 90 members. It was quite a sight as you came into the stadium, with motorcycles and Start Seeing Motorcycle signs everywhere. Again many folks ask questions about the motorcycles and we engaged the public with our presence. We want to thank Karen and Gene Kaufman, Drew from the Rascals Organization for helping us set

What a Month

this up, Chapter O and W2 members for helping set everything up and Chapter Z for participating with us. Again, discussions have started to a second" Night at the Ras-cals" sponsored by Chapter O, W2 and Z to try to accomplish even more for Motorist Awareness. Thank you one and all for help-ing us make contact with the motorists about who we are. I think when they see we are Mom’s, Dad’s, Grandparents, young and old

they realize we are not just ‘Bikers” we are people, with those that love us and want to keep us around. Thanks again for “Making a Difference”. Ethyl’s Smoke House and Barbeque is a favorite for many, we had 20 members turnout. Tom Berry even brought the bike (yeah I know he lives less than five miles away). But the food was great but the company even better. So Monday July 10, we hope to see you all at the Chapter W2 Gathering.

Don’t forget the July 14-16 “Ride the Dragon Ride”, Friday night(14th) some of us are meeting at Jerry Rothermich’s around 6:00-6:30 PM to head down to the lake. We are staying at the Days Inn, 4755 Osage Beach Parkway, Osage Beach, Mo. Phone number 1.573.693.9371 rooms are under “Gold Wing Group”. We will be touring Lake of the Ozarks aka The Dragon, with our Tour Guide Glenn White, who knows every rock personally starting at 9:00 am Saturday morning. If you don’t come down Friday during the day or that night, ride down in the morning and take the tour you won’t regret it. The ride will be approx. 4 hours and a lunch along the way. Then we are going to come back and relax around the pool in the evening and ride back Sunday morning, just taking a weekend at the lake. Everyone is welcome to come enjoy the ride, this is not just a Chapter W2 event; so come join us for a little “FUN”. Until then “Ride Safe” and enjoy life, that is what it is all about. See ya down the

road.

We love the cool breezes and la-zy days of summer, but sometime riding on 90 degree days can feel like you’re being blasted by a hair dryer! Here’s a round-up of rider suggestions for keeping cool when riding in extreme heat.

Why Motorcycle Gear in the Summer? When riding this summer, don’t be tempt-ed to go without protective gear. It sounds counter-intuitive, but in the sum-mer, riders really need to cover up.

Why? Besides exposure to road rash, riders who ride uncovered dehy-drate MORE quickly as sweat evaporates. That can cause heat exhaus-tion — and it’s totally unnecessary. Keep Cool, Summer Riding Tips: There are 3 key principles when it comes to summer riding: hydration, sun burn prevention and evaporative cooling. Hydration: Keep well hydrated. Always carry a water bottle full of cold water, and stop at least once an hour for a cold drink. Sun burn prevention: Apply sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Unless you are looking to sport a “biker” tan, protect all exposed skin, especially on the backs of hands, wrists and the back of your neck. Evaporative cooling: Wear motorcycle gear specially designed to be pro-tective, but well ventilated — and combine that with light layers under-neath. (Continued on next page)

Keep Cool: Tips For Motorcycle Riders, Summer Motorcycle Gloves & More

Here are 20 rider-tested tips for keeping cooler in extreme heat:

• Wear light colored clothing. • White helmet with vents — color matters. White actually reflects

heat away from your head. • Keep heat at bay with apparel specially designed to circulate cool

water to lower an maintain core body temperature — for instance, wear a cooling vest.

• Wear breathable clothing with ventilation and quick dry fabrics — like these “transition” mesh riding suits from Olympia Motosports.

• Wet a bandana for your neck, and your T-shirt, with clean fresh wa-ter every time you stop. In the heat, it should dry out in about an hour.

• Put a wet towel under a ventilated jacket to help with cooling

• Ride with the sleeve zips open and funnel the wind up your arms. • Terry wrist bands can bridge the gap between glove and jacket

sleeve — especially if you’re only wearing a T-shirt under the jacket • Wear goggles or ballistic shades • A wet bandana on your neck feels great, below the collar of your

jacket. • Wear breathable, mesh, ventilated summer motorcycle gloves to

maximize cooling airflow. • Cut up a piece of sheepskin and put that on the seat, wool side out. • Cover your seat with a white towel when you are not on your bike. • Cover black gasoline tanks with a towel as well. • Avoid tight clothes. More Summer Riding Tips for Motorcycle Riders Prevent blisters by taking off your wristwatch. Park in the shade or in a covered parking structure. Try to stay off of oily patches on the road. They can be as slick and hot

as a pancake griddle on hot pavement. Carry some oil just in case the bike overheats. Ride early and late in the day … stay inside if you can, in the midday

sun. reprinted from olympia gloves website. Gloves for all riding seasons
