Southwest Dekalb High School Counseling Department
Ninth grade students must be scheduled:
• Four Core Classes– Math – English – Science– Social Studies
– For Students earning middle school credits in World Language
• One PE/Health Class • Two Elective Classes
Note: Students with Gifted and or Magnet classification are enrolled in the same core courses. However, they have instructors with Gifted Certifications.
Math • All students must be scheduled for a math course.
• Based on their academic history and needs, students will be scheduled for CCGPS Coord Algebra or Accelerated Coord CCGPS Algebra.
• General CCGPS Coord Algebra is taught over two semesters and Accelerated Coord CCGPS Algebra is taught in one semester.
• Students currently enrolled in Accelerated Coord CCGPS Algebra will be scheduled for Accelerated CCGPS Analytical Geometry.
•End of Course Test are taken in December /April
English
• All ninth grade students are scheduled for Literature/Composition 9.
• Lit/Comp 9 is a one semester class and can be either first or second semester.
* End of Course Test at the end of the semester in which course is taken
Social Studies• All ninth grade students are enrolled in
Citizenship-Civics/World Geography.
• This is a one semester class and can be either first or second semester.
• Students are taught Citizenship-Civics for the first nine weeks of the semester and given their final grade.
• The second nine weeks, students are taught World Geography.
• If passed, 0.5 credits are earned per nine weeks which totals 1.0 credit.
Science• All ninth grade students are enrolled in
Biology.• Biology is a one semester class and can
be scheduled first or second semester.• Some students maybe in the Fernbank
STT program and will earn 1 unit of Biology and 1 additional unit of Science
* End of Course Test at the end of the semester in which course is taken
PE/Health• All ninth grade students are scheduled for PE/HE 9.
• PE/HE9 is a one semester class and can be either first or second semester.
• Students are taught either PE or Health the first nine weeks of the semester and given their final grade.
• The second nine weeks, students are taught the remaining subject.
• If passed, 0.5 credits are earned for PE and Health which totals 1.0 credit.
Elective Courses• Ninth grade students will be scheduled 2
elective courses if they are enrolled in a two-semester general math class and 3 elective classes if they are enrolled in a one-semester accelerated math class.
• Counselors make every effort to accommodate the student. However, elective scheduling is contingent upon availability.
• Band, JROTC, Chorus, and Orchestra are considered two-semester classes.
Remember• Make sure that the counselor schedules first and second
semester classes at the time of registration.
• Check that all required courses have been scheduled.
• Select courses comparable to your students academic abilities. However, do not be afraid of a challenge or choosing rigorous classes!
• Understand elective course descriptions before making a selection.
• Double check your schedule and do not be afraid to ask questions.
Promotion Policy• In order to be Promoted Students must have
6 credits to be promoted to 10thgrade3 core classes and 3 electives
12 credits to be promoted to 11th grade6 core classes and 6 electives
18 credits to be promoted to 12th grade9 core classes and 9 electives
