Mercy In Action Ministry - What can you do for a loved one that is deceased? How does the Catechism of the Catholic

Church define "purgatory? The Catechism defines purgatory as a "purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enjoy the joy of heaven," which is expressed by those, "who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified.” (CCC 1030)

All Souls Day is set aside for praying for the dead. Praying for the dead is a Christian obligation. The Church devotes the month of November to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Although it is not a Holy Day of Obligation, we hope you will mark your calendars and join us for a bilingual mass, Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 8:45 am with a rosary procession in the cemetery immediately following. We will begin by praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Ideas for Praying for Our Deceased Loved Ones and All Souls in Purgatory 1. Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the intention of the Holy Souls. 2. Sacrifices: practice small acts of self denial throughout the day and offer these penances up for the poor souls. More to come... Please join us for our next Mercy In Action Ministry Meeting October 9th at 5:00 pm at the Church. Call Lisa for more information.

October 6, 2019 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time SECOND COLLECTION The second collection today is for Respect Life Sunday. Please be generous. COFFEE AND DONUT SOCIAL The Coffee and Donut Social hosted by the Men of St. Patrick’s is Sunday, October 6th after the 8:00AM and 10:00AM Masses in the parish hall. See you there. BISHOP’S REFLECTION FOR OCTOBER Dear Brothers and Sisters, in October we will once again celebrate Respect Life Month. This year’s theme, chosen by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, is Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life. In this time of ever increasing attacks on the life and dignity of the human person, we as the people of God need to be conscious of our call to evangelize, to bring Christ, our hope, into every season of life. When I came to the Diocese I was happy to learn that the people of the Diocese of Stockton, through generous contributions to the Respect Life Sunday Second Collection, support the Church’s efforts to build a Culture of Life. In the past your support has allowed the diocese to: -Establish a network of parish Respect Life Representatives; - Educate on life issues; - Promote local Pregnancy Resource Centers; -Offer reconciliation and healing to men and women hurt by abortion; -Advocate for just laws at the local, state and national level; -Work to improve the care of our sick and elderly. While all of this work is extremely important and will continue into the future, we have come to realize building a Culture of Life in the Diocese also requires an outreach to our families. To better serve God’s people and meet the needs of families, we plan to expand our office of Respect Life to include Family Life Ministry. With this expansion we will provide resources and support to address the everyday realities of marriage and family life. As the theme for October indicates, we need Christ as our hope in Every Season of Life. We need to have Diocesan resources for the many seasons a family might encounter including: -Christian Marriage (preparation and enrichment); -Natural Family Planning; -Parenting (in times of crisis and just the everyday); -Single, Divorced and Separated Catholics; -Experiences of death and/or End of Life. Preparation I am asking for your increased support of the Respect Life Second Collection to help us realize our vision of expansion and development of the new diocesan Office of Family and Respect Life. As we work together promote a Culture of Life, let us ask the Lord of Life, Jesus, to lead us on the way. In the Peace of Christ, Bishop Cotta
