All we see is our environ ment and TV in wh ich cars,promiscuous women, jewelry, and money are glamourized. Sowe pimp out our cars before we move out of the projects,

ridicule people who are close to the real idea of success, give the video vixens of the block the most play, and we're noteven going to mention the fake bling and green necks. Thesocietal norms we deal with in "the hood," wherever in thiscountry, are backwards, extreme, and individual to us. the only other poeple who truly understand are the rappers who putit in their music, whether celebratory or prophetic. Just may be the reason it attracts us so much.

We look to everyone aroundus, who essentially are in thesame barrel as we are, asbusiness consultants, fashionforecasters, or love interests,and it leaves us striving for nothing more than lower classluxury debt. Making it t o 21 isa blessing, leasing a car is forpussies, fast food is our neighborhood fri end, we

judge Obama for all owing gay p e o p l e t o s h a r e t h e sacredness of marriage,(what is sacred anymore?)and every day is t he same ol'shit. And some of us areperfectly ne with it all. If wedo nothing to chan ge it, bydeductive reasoning we are keeping it the same. An d thecycle continues...

When I put on Section 80 by Kendrick Lamar, I close my eyes butit feels like theyre still just as open as before. Im seeing my environment. The projects. The hood. Kendrick Lemar paints

these pictures, narrates, and explains the themes of our environment in an extremely dope and prodigal way. Catered to

our age group, The Millenials, A.K.A. Generation Y, 80s, 90s, andnew millennium babies, Section 80 explains the attention decit, technology infatuation, self-medication, materialism, circumstance,and everything in between. Lamar labels, packages, and presents

the full picture that is Generation Y, the bottom half.

On paper, the picture we have of Generation Y sounds extremely upbeat

and revolutionary:HIGH EXPECTATIONS.

HIGH SELF-CONFIDENCE.HIGH TECHNOLOGICAL

INTELLIGENCE.HIGHLY INDIVIDUALISTIC.

HIGHLY LIBERAL. HIGH DIVERSITY.HIGH ASPIRATIONS.

HIGH OPTIMISM.

That picture rings true to a certain extentbut no one but Kendrick Lamar paintspicture of repercussions when our parents reiterated expectations for us(go to college, get a job, buy a house,start a family; in that order) go unfullledbecause they dont line up with thecondition of our country or community.The bottom half, and more realistic sliceof Generation Y is most often held toolow to reach some of those high

descriptions. We deal most in falseachievement, poverty, psychologicaloppression, attention decits, misguidedmaterialism, unemployment realities, andcrab-in-a-barrel desperation. And thespecial treatment syndrome Gen. Y isknow for, (having over-protective working

class parents who provide domestic safe-havens and endless upward progressionlessons) does not always infect us because

the resources to do so are not as readily available. Section 80 explains rst-handhow it looks and most importantly how itfeels.
