Principal’s Report

HSC Examinations

The 2019 HSC Examinations concluded for our students on Monday November 11 with the Physics exam. This brought to an end Year 12’s thirteen years of schooling. They can now let their hair down and celebrate, whilst they await their results which are released on December 17. We now look forward to celebrating the end of their school years at their Formal on November 27.

I would like to thank our HSC Examination Supervisor Team for their support of our students during the last 4 weeks. Their organisation, professionalism and understanding is greatly appreciated by the students and teaching staff. We are very lucky to have the team of people that we do, and are in the fortunate position of having several of them who can fulfil the Presiding Officer position, who coordinates the supervisors and works with the deputy principals to ensure all of our students needs are met.

Remembrance Day Ceremonies

I was fortunate enough to attend two Remembrance Day ceremonies on Monday November 11, one as a part of our school assembly and the second at 11:00am at the Richmond Cenotaph organised by Richmond RSL Sub-Branch. Remembrance day is an important day where we take time to commemorate those in the armed forces, past and present. Australians at home and abroad have made countless sacrifices during times of war and conflict, and continue to serve during times of peace. On Remembrance Day we honour these men and women and take time to appreciate their service, their sacrifice, and, most importantly, their contributions toward peace.

Our SRC, led by Ms Ashlea Dale and Ms Alex Garcia did a wonderful job in organising the ceremony at school, which included several student tributes, the laying of a

wreath, a minute’s silence and the playing of the Last Post & Roust.

At the ceremony at the Richmond Cenotaph, school captains 2020, Hannah C & Tim A, addressed the audience on what Remembrance Day meant to them. This was of particular significance to Tim, whose grandfather fought in the Vietnam War. Both students were very impressive in their address and received many plaudits from members of the public at the conclusion of the ceremony. Thanks to Ms Dale again, for her support of Tim and Hannah in her role as SRC coordinator.

Respectful Relationships & White Ribbon

This week at Richmond High School we have focused on respectful relationships and the importance of treating each other well in our relationships. This focus is based on the work of the White Ribbon Day initiative and standing up, and saying no to domestic violence.

Two of our senior boys, Tyler E and Tim A (Year 11), spoke at Monday’s Assembly about what is a respectful relationship. Key words in their address included: Acceptance, honesty, self-awareness, listening, integrity, openness, understanding, love, patience, dignity, decency, compassion, empathy, communication, wisdom, trust and appreciation.

One important message that came through very strongly in their conversations with other males was that we should all be striving to demonstrate respectful relationships in everything we do.

There were a number of activities and events throughout the week to embrace and spread the respectful relationship message, including an Oztag Gala Day amongst the Hawkesbury High Schools; visits to Bligh Park & Hobartville Primary Schools to spread the respectful relationships message; and the Penrith Cup Carnival involving a number of schools embracing and spreading the same message across the Western Sydney Region. Special thanks to Ms Kelly Bow and Mr Dave

Maddison D Tyler E

Please note if students have awards to hand in so they can

receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award they need to do so

by November 29 at the very latest. This will ensure time

for the awards to be processed and ready for distribution

at the end of year award ceremonies. Please hand awards

in to the Front Office. Thank You.

Harkins for the work with our students this week. Well done!

Uniform Survey

Last term, all of our students in Years 7-11 completed a uniform survey to get their insight into whether they feel it identifies them as Richmond HS students; its comfort, style & fit; suitability for warmer and cooler weather; and whether a navy blue short option would be popular.

We will now be sending out a parent survey regarding our current school uniform. It will be a Google Survey that should only take a few minutes to complete. The feedback from both surveys will be shared with both our current suppliers and the school community, including our P&C. The students have already been presented a summary of the data from the student survey.

We are committed to working with our school community in providing for the needs of our students regarding school uniform, whilst maintaining a uniform that meets our community’s expectations, ensures students are safe and promotes a sense of belonging and equity.

A Great School Community

The last week or so has been challenging for our school community with the threat of bushfires to our families and staff who live in or adjacent to bushland, along with a few of our students being involved in traffic accidents in the community that did cause injury. However, it never ceases to amaze me how our school community pull together to support each other in times of need. Whether it be putting systems in place to cater for a significant number of staff absences, due to the threat of bushfires and school closures in the Blue Mountains & Hawkesbury, or supporting one of our students who suffered serious injury in a traffic accident, our students, staff and school community demonstrate the capacity to be able to support each other, problem solve and

perform admirably in a crisis. It makes me very proud to be a part of this great school.

Congratulations also goes out to our Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award students who trekked through the Wild Dog Mountains. We had 5 students who bravely battled the hot and dry conditions by embracing early starts to the days of long walking. A huge thanks to Nathan Hando and Jane MacCormick for giving up time with their families to accompany our students on their adventurous journey and supporting this wonderful aspect of Richmond High School’s extra-curricular opportunities.

We still have lots of exciting events occurring in the next few weeks including Peer Support Training for our Year 11 & 12 students as well as Orientation Day for Year 7 2020 happening on the 3rd December, followed by a Google Classroom Parent information night on 10th December from 5.30 – 6.30pm. Our ATSI students will be attending the NASCA Olympics on the 21st November which is a fantastic day for students to connect with culture.

We would like to thank our students and school community for their co-operation and support during the Catastrophic Fire Warning Event on Tuesday 12th November. We were relieved the precautions put into place were able to keep the Hawkesbury residents safe and we were given the first opportunity to put our school fire action plans into the ready. It was a valuable experience for us testing the procedures previously set up and we were able to better prepare these for the event of an evacuation. Also a big shout out to our staff who have been working tirelessly as part of the RFS volunteers including Jane MacCormick, Jono Davis & Pam Misius.

RELIEVING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Deputy Principal’s Report

It has been a busy Term 4 for teachers and students with both Yearly Examinations and assessment tasks being finalised as well as a variety of excursions and extracurricular activities happening around the school. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Year 7 – 10 students on their application and positive attitude towards their examination period, as well as our Year 8 students who also had to complete the NSW mandatory VALID 8 Science assessment.

A huge congratulations also goes out to our 2019 HSC students who have come to the end of the road of their secondary schooling by completing the HSC examinations earlier this term. They now wait patiently for their results before starting off on their next adventures in life. We hope that the skills and knowledge you have gained at Richmond High School will stay with you, guiding you to achieve your best in all you do and that you keep your connections with your community strong. We are very proud of all you have achieved at Richmond High School. Your teachers look forward to saying a fond farewell at your Year 12 Formal at the Hawkesbury Crowne Plaza on the 27th November.

Our Year 11 students have now started on their HSC journey and we wish them luck on the path they have taken up. They have multiple assessment tasks due right up until the end of term so it’s certainly full steam ahead for them. It can be a long, hard year of study so we encourage all our students to stay healthy, eat well and exercise regularly to help them achieve success in their studies.

Year 10 students were surveyed earlier this year about using a device in their senior schooling. If any year 11 or 12 students in 2020 wish to use a device they are encouraged to do so, however, it is not compulsory for seniors. Senior students may also utilise the BYOD device purchasing portal to purchase devices at discounted prices. Just a reminder that all software can

White Ribbon Gala Day

Today Richmond High hosted the four Hawkesbury government high schools for the first Charity Cup Gala Day. This initiative was to promote respectful relationships. The junior competition was won by Colo High School who defeated Richmond and the senior comp saw Richmond victorious over Colo in the grand final. We would like to thank Colo, Hawkesbury and Windsor High Schools for supporting this event. Thank you also to Mr Harkins who organised and coordinated this gala day.

A Mathematics Moment

Bailey W (Year 12) was happy to finally win a Maths Bag on his last assembly at RHS. You can increase your chances of winning a Maths Bag by being the first person to hand in the correct solution to the following problem to Miss Kinsey in the Mathematics staffroom.

Problem 1: Jill has the same number of brothers as she has sisters. Her brother Jack has twice as many sisters as he has brothers. How many children are in the family?

Problem Solving

Students love engaging in problem solving in Mathematics. In this photo Year 8 students Aidan W, Charlotte C and Nathan K are working on a ‘Numbers’ problem as seen on the TV show ‘Letters and Numbers’. They are always eager to beat each other to the answer.

In these photos Year 7 students Lachlan D, Felix H, Gemma K, Anika R, Layla B and Nicholas C are engaging with ‘Hands on’ activities and are achieving success.

The Australian Mathematics Competition

The Australian Mathematics Competition is a highly recognised competition that is conducted throughout Australia. This year it was held on 1st August and Richmond High School was fortunate to enter 28 students into this prestigious event. The students were from each year group and all entrants are to be congratulated on their effort.

The following students received a certificate of Credit:

Year 7: Diesel K, Felix H, Olivia B, Nicholas C

Year 8: Kyle B, Karla S, Viktoriia B

Year 9: Alexander P, Ryan L

Year 11: Caleb D

Year 12: Hayley T

A certificate of Distinction was awarded to Ethan T (Year 7).

Not Even Once

Richmond High School has been participating in the ‘Not Even Once’ initiative. All year groups will participate in the drugs and alcohol presentation. It aims to educate and positively shift young peoples understanding on the causation issues underpinning addiction, impacts and effects of alcohol and drugs on their developing brains and future potential. Well done to our Welfare Team for organising such a wonderful initiative and powerful message to our students.

Baby Chicks!

Year 8 are so excited as their chicks have arrived! They are very much looking forward to observing the growth and development of their chicks over the next 5 weeks.

Support in the Garden

Students in the Support Unit were busy with Work Experience activities before the last holidays. The gardens adjacent to the Science block received a facelift when students, led by Mrs Sexton and Mr Farrer,

worked tirelessly to clean, weed and mulch in time for the Graduation Ceremony for Year 12. Thank you Ritchie, Rodney, Jarrod, Richard, Emma and Noah.

School Opal Card:

Students, please ensure you

Tap On and Tap Off!

An important requirement of the School Opal card is the need for students to Tap On and Tap Off when they travel to and from school.

Opal data gathered by tapping on and off is used to determine demand for bus services. If students don’t tap on and tap off, services may be cancelled due to the lack of recorded patronage.

To further promote the use of School Opal, Busways will also be conducting checks on School Opal cards over the coming months. All students travelling on buses to and from school will be required to show their card and ensure they Tap On and Tap Off every time they catch the bus. Students without an Opal Card will be provided with a brochure to take home identifying how they can get an Opal Card.
