Winning is a goal we all strive for, but how we achieve that goal is p

erhaps even more important. Those that make it to the top need

real determination to keep going when things get tough; they need a “can-do” sort of attitude and a desire to deal with diffi c

head-on and not try to skirt a

round them or take the easy way out. Determination, a positiv

e mindset, an ability to work with others

as a team to support, encourage and be encouraged are the character tra

challenges at different stages of our life

; it is how we deal with these challenges that will gauge how successfu

The Braeburn Group of International Schools boasts an ethos of nurturing personal growth by providing a frie

environment in all our schools in

East Africa. Early years, primary and secondary students develop the skills,

attitudes and awareness

necessary to become successful learners, co

• Conserve such ecologically precious indigenous forests and their provision of vital environmental services;

• Create a sustainable and harmonious environment that enables people and wildlife, including all flora and fauna, to coexist;

• Create and provide sustainable programmes for forest edge communities based on payments for ecosystem services. Such programmes and projects will be tailored to create income generation for the communities that support the conservation of natural resources.

Rhino Ark is committed to:• Mobilize stakeholders nationwide and

internationally for initiatives to protect and conserve the habitat and promote managed use of forest products for the benefit of present and future generations;

• Raise funds and other forms of support to develop sound management processes over entire eco-systems;

• Create frameworks where wider society and forest edge communities become involved in the management processes through public-private partnerships;

• Build mechanisms and management structures to prevent illegal exploitation of the forest habitat wherever it is threatened.

In so doing all stakeholders will benefit and the flora and fauna, particularly endangered species, will be better secured.

Our conservation work is anchored in three key values:

• Protecting ecosystem integrity;

• Ensuring full involvement of and participation by local communities;

• Forming effective partnerships.

At the crossroad… During the last 24 years, rarely have so many changes have taken place in only a few months.

Anton Levitan, who led the Rhino Charge Committee during 19 years andbuilt the Charge into a successful unique off-road motorsport competition, handed over the steering wheel to David Lowe in early June.A few weeks later, Colin Church who made Rhino Ark a Trust withinternational repute and led the building of the Aberdare fence to its fullcompletion, handed over the keys to the Rhino Ark offices to me.

To Anton and Colin, we owe the realization of many of our conservationdreams in the Aberdares and the preparation of our involvement in otherwater towers… we also owe the development of a very strong fraternity, both in Kenya and abroad, who are providing continuous support to ourconservation work. To these two Gentlemen, to these two friends, I wantto say Thank You.

Recently, the geographical scope of our conservation work has expandedtremendously from a focus on the Aberdare ecosystem to the water towersof Kenya, starting with Mt. Kenya and Mau Eburu. The public-privatepartnership model that we developed in the Aberdares has proven to be aneffective delivery mechanism in our conservation work in Mt. Kenya withover 10 kilometers of the electric fence already built.

In parallel to our geographical expansion, Rhino Ark has embarkedon new partnerships to address two core challenges connected to ourfence projects: re-establishing and securing wildlife corridors; and providing sustainable livelihoods to the forest adjacent communities. With the support of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources,we have initiated a feasibility study for the conservation of the wildlifecorridors and dispersal areas around Mau-Eburu. The study shouldprovide us with a blue-print to conserve and manage the wider Eburuecosystem. Upon completion of this study, we intend to look at othercorridors in the Mt. Kenya-Aberdare landscape.

We are also looking at establishing systems to secure a continuousflow of financial resources to support community-based conservationinitiatives. As an initial step, we are working with partners, includingthe Ministry of Water and Irrigation, towards financing a feasibilitystudy on the establishment of a national payment for watershed servicesprogramme in Kenya. We envisage that such a programme could providethe framework and the resources to engage upper catchment communitiesin improved land use practices that are beneficial to their livelihoods andto the environment.

These recent developments at Rhino Ark fit within the wider nationalcontext, in particular the increased commitment from the Governmentof Kenya to the conservation of the Water Towers, as indicated by theestablishment of the Water Tower Conservation Fund in July 2010 and theKenya Water Towers Agency in April this year. They are fully in line withthe outcome of RIO+20 “The Future We Want” which calls for increased investment in the conservation of our “natural infrastructure”.

EVENTS AWARDS

L-R: Tim Jessop, Jon Bovard, Bruce Knight, Nick Hutchinson, Alan Mckittrick and Graham Mckittrick receive the Victor Ludorum Award fromHon. Charles Njonjo for the highest funds raised in 2012.

ladies’ Car 17 (Team Rhino Rouge) of Tanya Church raised Kshs. 2,766,036 to be the first of three all ladies’ teams in the 2012 millionaires’ club.

The other millionaire ladies’ teams were Car 18 (Teresa Sapieha/Pinks in Pearls) and Car 19 (Petra Somen/Sabine Kontos - Team Bush Babes), who also earned the Coup Des Dames Award. The mil-

lionaire’s club also welcomed first time entrants – Richard Keeley/Car 47 (Kshs.1.41m) and Jamie

Manuel/Brandon Barbour/Car 8 (Kshs. 1.14m). Another team that cracked the millionaire ceiling this year is Philip

Holi/Dhruv Shah/Car 57 (Ksh 1.04m).

The new conservation projects Rhino Ark has undertaken in the Mau (Eburu ecosystem) and Mt. Kenya, as well as the continuing management of the Aberdare fence will require every resource that can be mustered. The challenges in the Mau and Mt. Kenya will require doubling our fundraising efforts to ensure that these precious ecosystems are saved in good time. From the building of protective new electrified fences to finding solutions that address the unsustainable dependence on these indigenous forests, it is the tireless fund raising efforts of the Rhino Charge community that makes this work possible. Kudos to all who gave their time, effort and financial support to make this year’s Rhino Charge such a great success.

2012 witnessed a quantum leap in the membership of the Rhino Charge millionaires’ club, with an increase of six members over last year’s 25 to an incredible 31 teams that have raised over Kshs. 1 million. This amazing individual teams’ fund raising feat was mirrored in the whopping Kshs. 84.6 million record total raised in the event. The Car 5 team of Alan McKittrick, Bruce Knight, Nick Hutchinson, Tim Jessop, Jon Bovard and Graham McKittrick again maintained pole position in fund raising, bringing in Kshs. 10,192,351. This is the third straight year in which they have broken the Kshs. 10 mil-lion barrier, winning the Victor Ludorum award (for highest funds raised to distance covered) in the process. Since 2000, the team has consistently raised over Kshs. 1 million in the Rhino Charge and has been the top fundraising team for ten years running.

The Car 35 Hog Charge Team of Mark Tilbury raised Kshs. 4,737,636 to maintain second place for the second year running and achieve their high-est fund raise amount to date, bringing credit upon all the school children who raise funds for this team during the annual Hog-Charge event. In third place, Christopher Welles’ Car 10 (Team Wags) returned to the Rhino Charge after a year’s break, raising Kshs. 4,411,124 to improve on their 2010 fund raise performance. Sean Avery’s Car 38 (Team Bundufundi), regular top five fund raisers since 2007, this year achieved fourth place, raising Kshs. 3,809,160 - their highest total to date. In fifth place, the all

Millionaires Gold Award by yearFUNDRAISE HEROES -

The Aberdare Trust was launched on May 11, 2012 by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon, Raila Odinga, at a ceremony on the Rhino Ark fence line at Bondeni, Mweiga.

The Trust is a public/private project. It will manage the Rhino Ark Aberdare Fence and play an active role towards securing the objectives of the fence.

“With the launch of The Aberdare Trust today, an endowment fund will be established to provide financial sustainability in the management of the fence. This will be a key component to ensure that the Trust will be able to achieve its objectives”, said the Prime Minister.

The Rhino Ark Aberdare Fence project has been funded for over 23 years by donations from thousands of Kenyans, mainly through the annual Rhino Charge. It has not only successfully resolved human/wildlife con-flict in the Aberdare ecosystem but has assumed a much greater role in the unfolding process of developing strong management and conserva-tion practices within the 2,000 km2 fenced Aberdare Conservation Area and wider ecosystem.

The Rhino Ark project has benefited the fence adjacent communities who in turn have provided considerable voluntary labour and other support during the construction of the fence.

An independent economic, social and environmental assessment of the Aberdare ecosystem published one year ago stated that its con-tribution in terms of goods, services and biodiversity value to the Kenyan economy is ksh 59.3 billion annually.

The Aberdare Trust will be managed by a board that will comprise representation from public and private sectors. The directors of Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service – the two parastatal bodies with a management mandate for the Aberdare ecosys-tem – will share policy direction together with Rhino Ark’s Chairman. The Trust’s board is empowered to elect up to two members from the fence adjacent communities as Trustees for a two-year period.

Rhino Ark has had a 23-year involvement in the Aberdares. Its prime task has been the construction of a 400 km fence that now demarcates the Aberdare Conservation Area (ACA) where only sustainable activities are sanctioned.

The fence has helped prevent forest excisions and resolved human-wild-life conflict. As a consequence farmers’ incomes have improved and land values increased by over 300%. Full crop off take is now normal whereas previously wildlife destruction was common place.

Speaking at the launch ceremony one of Rhino Ark’s founder Trustees Dr. Perez Olindo said: “As initiators of the concept of The Aberdare Trust, it is Rhino Ark’s intention to play a dynamic role as a founder member of the Trust together with the Kenya Forest Service and The Kenya Wildlife Service. The communities which live adjacent to the fence line and who helped build the fence now have a legal framework to participate in its maintenance and all governance issues pertaining to ecosystem integrity.

“We must work out an access policy for the gates together with full com-munity, KFS and KWS involvement and within the legal framework of the Forest Act.

“This is a challenging reality but one that must be discussed and a solu-tion found for those communities who for generations have existed with a forest that has not until recently been under such pressure. Alternative income benefits have to be proven and developed especially for those

with limited resources and who have become over-dependent upon the forest for ad hoc methods of gaining income – often illegally. In the

end we will find a solution which will continue to enrich both the fence edge communities and the wider national and

international public who benefit from a much more stable Aberdares today”, said Dr. Olindo.

The Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Hon. Dr. Noah Wekesa, was represented at the event by Hon. Nanok, Assistant Minister for Forestry and Wildlife together with the Chairman of the Kenya Forest Service, Prof

R. Musangi, the Director of KFS, David Mbugua, the Chairman of KWS, David Mwiraria, and the Director of

KWS, Dr. Julius Kipng’etich.

The Construction of the Mt. Kenya Fence was launched on 7 September 2012 by Finance Minister, Hon. Njeru Githae, at a ceremony held at the Castle CFA Centre, near the Castle Forest Station in Kirinyaga County.

The purpose of the Mt. Kenya Fence is to bring harmony between nature and the forest adjacent communities and to protect a natural asset of critical importance that supports economic development at national and local levels.

The Fence will protect over 2500 km2 of prime forest areas and will be at least 400kms long – equal or possibly longer than the now com-pleted Aberdare fence.

Speaking during the event, the Finance Minister said: “Considering the critical importance of this project as demonstrated by the study report on the benefits of the Aberdare fence, my Ministry provided Ksh. 100 million in the 2011-2012 financial year for the fencing of Mt. Kenya and Mt. Eburu in the Mau Forests Complex. These funds have enabled the purchase of the material for building the first 50 kilometers of the fence that we are launching today.

“In addition, my Ministry has allocated Ksh. 200 million in this financial year and com-mitted the same amount in the following years to support the construction of the entire fence that will be approximately 400 kilometers long and will take five years to build”, he added.

In December 2010, Rhino Ark announced its commitment to supporting conservation of Kenya’s mountain forest ecosystems and their biodi-versity. Mount Kenya was identified as a priority ecosystem in which Rhino Ark will initially focus on.

The building of the fence is in line with Vision 2030, Kenya is develop-ment blueprint that identified the rehabilitation of the water towers, including Mt. Kenya, as a flagship project for 2012.

The fenced area will include Mt. Kenya National Park and the sur-rounding forest belt that was listed by UNESCO in 1997 as a World Heritage Site, with Mt. Kenya being internationally recognized as “one of the most impressive landscapes of Eastern Africa with its rugged glacier-clad summits, Afro-alpine moorlands and diverse forests, which illustrate outstanding ecological processes”.

The maintenance of the fence will be critical to ensuring its continued effectiveness in protecting the communities as well as the forests and the water catchments. An appropriate governance framework, similar to the Aberdare Trust, will be required to harness the goodwill and coor-dinate the support from all the stakeholders towards the maintenance and management of the fence.

“I was encouraged by the recent establishment of the Aberdare Trust which will not only provide for the maintenance of the fence, but also provide policy guidance in the management of the ecosystem. I also noted that an endowment fund will be established to provide finan-cial sustainability to ensure that the Trust will be able to achieve its objectives. My Ministry is currently considering contributing to such an endowment fund towards securing the benefits of the fence for perpetuity”, said the Minister.

Rhino Ark is pleased to report that the building of the Mt Kenya Fence commenced in August 2012 with 10 kilometres built to date. The prog-ress in building the fence has been made possible by the successful col-laboration of the partners, namely Rhino Ark, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forest Service and the fence line communities.

400kms long

I feel a bit of a fraud really. There it was, on the results board for the whole of the Rhino Charge community: Terry Childs has won the Rhino Charge. Congratulations coming in from literally the whole World, past and present chargers, quite surreal really. Fraud? Well, the only reason my name is there is simply because I filled in the form (more accurately my secretary copied from the previous year’s entry). All chargers know that no individual wins this event; in fact it is a personification of a team effort, both on the day and before. In Braeburn Seven Squared’s case, if anyone should be singled out for special mention it is my son-in-law Patrick Garner, who prepared the car, drove it and raised the most sponsorship.

Those messages I mentioned tended to follow a theme; “about time too”, or “at last”, or “what took you so long?” and, I have to agree, I am running out of wall space for the plaques. At least there’s now one with ‘Winner’ inscribed on it.

My first Rhino Charge was with David McCallister – I can’t even remember the year, I was a runner, would you believe, it was that long ago. We were in a Willys Jeep and spent 5 hours trying to get out of a mud hole we had carelessly fallen into. There was nothing to winch on and in our efforts to extract the car broke two drive shafts. Grumpy Gran Calder eventually coupled three vehicles together and towed us out – humiliation!! We didn’t finish but history suggests I was bitten by a not so endangered species, the Rhino Charge bug. Since then, of the many Charges I have entered Patrick has always been the driver, with me navigating, other team members have varied.

Over the years we have always been competitive, that is if we remained able to move. Prior to this year our best positions had been 4th with a 6th, 7th and 13th. Other years we often didn’t finish. We have won the Gauntlet and a few tiger lines on odd occasions.

The car has improved year on year, Kenlow fans to stop overheating, reinforced radial arms, detachable suspension and of course the Unimog axles. Prior to that last mod, drive shafts, differentials and prop shafts seemed to be the weakest link.

One of our most interesting experiences was in 2010 – Magadi. On the very first leg, while all other sane competitors started of going around a mountain, we decided to go over it. After all that was the shortest route. The aforesaid mountain proved to be higher, steeper and more slippery than we had anticipated and when the slope became impossible, even with all four wheels difflocked (spell-check suggests that should be defrocked!), we had to winch. Unbeknown to us the whole upward exercise had proved too much for our engine mountings which had broken. This had little effect while going up.

However, on the way down, which if anything was even more precipitous (steep) than the way up, the engine, free of much holding it in place, slid forward and pushed the fan into the radiator and destroyed it. Consternation reigned! Did we give up and fly our ‘come and get me’ rescue flag. Did we hell! No indeed! We assessed the situation, inventoried our meagre resources and got to work. We sawed off the handle of the high lift jack using the file on my trusty Leatherman, we then bypassed the radiator thus giving us circulation, but no cooling. We poured all our precious drinking water into the bubbling engine and took off wondering how far we would get. We didn’t have to wonder long, we travelled about 800 metres before the hose blew off the bypass. Rescue flag?? Not a chance. The three Childs’, Anton, Chris and moi took off, GPS in hand to walk to the next guard post to get more water. To cut a long story short, we got going again and commenced to hop in 1km hops to our new primary objective, waiting for the engine to cool and refilling at each stop. Our destination: the infamous Gauntlet. The car was still quite capable over Gauntlet type distances so we decided to win that. In the event we came second – how anyone could have beaten us we will never know.

Even this year, we had our mechanical problems. The going was very hard and after one checkpoint we found our nearside radial arm was bent and the rear tyre was being cut

“WHAt tOOK yOu sO lONG?”Terry Childs of Car 49, 1st overall, tells his Charge story

Rhino Charge 2012

to pieces by the bodywork. It took about half an hour to approximately straighten it, by using a jack between the arm and the chassis. I might add at this point, this was no ordinary radial arm but a super strong and expensive one from Terrafirma, 4x4 specialists in UK. From this point on Patrick tried to be careful to stop it bending again, but to no avail. After a short while it did bend again. By this time we were behind the clock and images of glory and a revered place in the history books was fading fast. Luckily Patrick had brought an old, and not so super strong, spare arm with us. So about 45 minutes later and further behind the clock, we were back on the road (Road?!) again.

We had to make up time if we were to finish. We then came to the Hardi to XL Energy Tiger line it was only our third leg. Looking back the decision made here was probably where we won the Charge. The question was whether we were to attempt the 2.2 km straight line course or take the long ‘easy’ route. There was a furious argument amongst the team. Anton, possibly the maddest of the team and the least likely to wimp out of challenge, single handedly persuaded us to go the long way around using such phrases as, “if we go down there, we’ll never been seen again”. Eventually we deferred to his knowledge of the bush. The moaning from opposition team members increased as the kilometers mounted up, we virtually retraced our steps passing within 700m of both Satao Camp and 200m of Craftsman (where we started). We travelled nearly 15 km to complete that leg, but we did it in about 40 minutes and made up time. Apparently chargers that did go straight over that Tiger Line took over five hours for that 2.2 km. As you can imagine by this time we ‘knew’ we had no chance of winning and proceeded to do the best we could talking about top five at absolute best. Even then our mechanical problems weren’t over. On a particularly steep incline the clutch stopped working. We checked the reservoir it was full. To get the car going, Patrick started

it in gear and we were faced with the prospect of trying to crash change the gears to limp home. In the event, as unexpected as the clutch went, it came back again. We presumed the fluid had boiled and filled with bubbles. Then on our penultimate leg, we had our second puncture, having used up the spare on a previous puncture, this would have put us out of the event but for the gunge in the tyre that just about kept the rubber from the rim and enabled us to finish.

The only other major trauma of the day was, after finishing, I lost the completed official log of our visited Guard Posts. This involved driving back, with the aforementioned flat tyre to our Start/Finish point at the Craftsman guard post and looking for it – it was in the car all the time under the seat. Boy was I popular! – cost me a few beers.

That evening, after having a few beers, showering, having a few more beers, eating and yes you’ve guessed it, we went to bed with no real expectations. In the morning as we were packing up, news started to filter through that car 49 had won. We thought it must be a joke. But the rumours were persistent and were coming from various sources. So by the time the results were due, we, although still not believing, were certainly wondering. We went to HQ and waited for the results to be posted and there it was: Car 49. Braeburn Seven Squared had won.

To me the Rhino Charge is a very special event and I look forward to it as one of the few times each year that I am really challenged in an alien field of endeavour (I’ll mention another later). The planning, preparation, raising the

sponsorship, the team meetings, the briefing, what to take, the trip to the venue, the scrutineering, the receiving of the route details, the deciding upon the course, the drive to the starting guard post, the waiting for the ‘off ’. Then, of course, the Charge itself: inherently involving some danger, critical decisions, frustration, excitement and more often than not, disappointment. During all this time six people are working towards a common goal, finding ways to overcome differences of opinion and sharing the setbacks, successes and sometimes elation – it is the ultimate bonding exercise and not contrived in the way these modern management courses are, it’s real. It is not possible to prepare for everything and being able to respond to whatever one faces is paramount to success; the radiator bypass mentioned above is a good example.

At this year’s briefing at Braeburn, I said something that’s worth mentioning again: the Rhino Charge takes us to parts of our beautiful country that we would never normally see; just another factor that makes this such a wonderful event. The raison d’être of the event must not be forgotten, the raising of funds for the protection of Kenya’s Water Towers and the protection of our wildlife heritage is an endeavour for which future generations will continue to thank us.

Patrick Garner, Anthony Childs, Robbie Calder, Brendon Hill and Barney Trevelyan-Johnson - I thank you, my fellow team members of the Braeburn Seven Squared entry for the privilege of being part of the team.

On the assumption we would never win – I said I would retire when we won. I lied!!

Investment income is recognised on accrual basis.(c) Propertyandequipment Items of property and equipment are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation. Depreciation is charged on the

straight line basis over the estimated useful lives of the assets. The annual depreciation rates in use are: Motor vehicles 25.0% Furniture and fittings 12.5% Computers 33.3% Office equipment 12.5%(d) Foreigncurrencytransactions Transactions during the year are converted into Kenya Shillings at the rates ruling at the transaction dates. Assets and

liabilities at the reporting date, which are expressed in foreign currencies, are translated at the rates ruling at that date. The resulting differences from conversion and translation are dealt with in the income and expenditure account.

(e) Financialinstruments A financial instrument is a contract that gives rise to both a financial asset of one enterprise and a financial liability of

another enterprise. The financial instruments held by the Trust are investments in the money market, trade and other receivables, bank balances and cash and trade and other payables.

All the financial instruments held by the Trust are accounted for on amortised cost basis.(f) Receivables Receivables are stated at nominal value, less provision for any amounts considered irrecoverable.(g) Cashandcashequivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and in hand and short term deposits with an original maturity of three

months or less.(h) Useofestimates The preparation of financial statements requires that management makes estimates and assumptions that affect

amounts reported in the financial statements and accompanying notes. Actual results could differ from these estimates. The more significant estimation process is related to the determination of provision for doubtful debts. Although some variability is inherent in these estimates, management believes that the amounts provided are adequate.

THE RHINO ARK CHARITABLE TRUSTSTATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION AS AT 31 MARCH 2012

THE RHINO ARK CHARITABLE TRUST NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2012

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2012

Rhino Ark Chairman of Trustees Michael Karanja

The year 2011-2012 was one of continued strong consolidation in preparation for our major new projects in Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu.

It was also one of continued support both from thousands of donors to the annual Rhino Charge, direct corporate donations and a significant injection of value support from the Kenya Government of materials for Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu fencing projects.

Whilst the Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu were at the centre of our forward planning and funding

in the year, the Aberdare Fence, Rhino Ark’s flagship project, remained a major focus of funds disbursement for its maintenance.

It has taken Rhino Ark Charitable Trust 23 years to build and successfully assist in the daily running of what is recognised as East Africa’s longest wildlife conservation fence.

This process will require continued management and funding support until an independent trust is fully operational and wholehearted commitment of its founding partners – Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and Rhino Ark.

In June 2011, under the direction of the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife, the Attorney General approved the Aberdare Trust Deed. I am glad to report that in January 2012 the co-partners – KFS, KWS and Rhino Ark initialled the Trust Deed document.

Just before the end of this financial year, the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife was starting the process to have a formal launch of the Trust at a time convenient to the Prime Minister. The Trust was launched by the Prime Minister on 11 May 2012.

The work is taking time. It will take many months of work to secure funding support and develop an independent management structure to make it work.

Overall funds 2011/12The total funds raised during the financial year under review were KShs 183 million.

Despite the difficult economic times, the 2011 Rhino Charge exceeded expectations and raised at field audit a total of KShs 73,328,040 – just short of one million US dollars.

Gross donations incorporating Rhino Charge and corporates amounted to KShs 83 million.

For the fifth year running, the Kenya Treasury was our major donor providing KShs 100 million for fence materials and managed through our fence construction partner, KWS. As those funds were not channelled through our accounts, there are not reflected in our balance sheets, although they are earmarked in support of our fence projects in Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu.

Every kilometre of fence built under the partnership agreements with KWS specifies that materials are provided by Treasury funds, whilst Rhino Ark’s inputs include payments to personnel for each completed kilometre of fence, vehicles, machinery, fuel, tools and mobile housing. In addition both KWS and Rhino Ark commit management time for constant supervision and issues resolution with communities along the pre planned fence alignment.

Corporate/ Conservation bodies supportCorporate and consensual grant supporters continued positively.

I would like to acknowledge the following organisations that have made generous contributions:

• Finlays for donating KShs 4.6 million for the fencing of Mau Mt Eburu and providing specific fund support for various entries to the annual Rhino Charge.

• Finlays completed the re-sighting of Rhino Ark’s plastic fence post making unit from Kijabe Ltd, the farm of former trustee, the late Michael Higgins, to Kingfisher Farm on South Lake Road, Naivasha. New posts started coming off the production line in January 2012. Capacity is achieving 250 posts of 6 inch width per month. Once the 4 inch facility is operational, the facility could double output. The agreement between Finlays and Rhino Ark specifies that each post is made at the cost of labour and running the machines only. Both Finlays and Rhino Ark are demonstrating an alternative to wood use for posts and mopping up plastic waste in the process.

Guard Posts ConstructionA total of KShs 3,683,374 from Rhino Ark sources has been spent on the construction of two energizer house/scout accommodation at Marimu and Ruhuruini. AWF provided KShs 1.5 million for the Ruhuruini Guard Post in the previous financial year.

Launch of Mt Kenya and Mau Mt EburuWe started the launch process for both Mt Kenya (400 kms) and Mau Mt. Eburu (50 kms) by acquiring two Land Cruisers, a tractor and a re-built trailer for the two fence construction teams. A total of KShs 11 million has been spent for this and other necessary machinery and equipment for start up in July 2012-2013.

Launch meetings were held with fence adjacent communities and stakeholders both in Embu for the Mt. Kenya Fence (Kiringa to Thuchi Rivers/50 kms) and at Ndabibi, Eburu.

Safaricom Foundation pledge KShs 155 million to Mau Mt Eburu.I am very pleased to announce that protracted discussions began during the year with Safaricom Foundation which culminated in signing an agreement in the week after the closing of the financial year.

The Safaricom Foundation’s support together with that of Finlays, the Kenyan Government and of Rhino Ark core funding will develop a fully rounded ecosystem development process for Mau Mt. Eburu. It will include completion of the fence, development of community based alleviation projects working with the Eburu Community Forest Association, tree planting and an anchor funding of KShs 30 million for an endowment Trust Fund similar to the Aberdare Trust. The funds will be disbursed over a three-year cycle beginning in 2012/2013.

The General FundThe general fund as reflected in the balance sheet has been split into two categories namely: Fence Maintenance Reserve and Fence Construction Reserve. Twenty percent of each year’s Rhino Charge donation is allocated specifically for maintenance of fence already constructed. This ensures that the huge amount of effort and money put into the conservation programme does not collapse from lack of maintenance. The maintenance reserve is therefore to earmark these funds for maintenance and not used for construction.

The fence construction reserve deficit has increased from KShs 22 million in 2011 to KShs 29 million. For the year ended 31 March 2012. This situation is expected to reverse during the current year. The fence maintenance reserve surplus increased during the year from KShs 56 million to KShs 64 million.

Bongo Surveillance Programme (BSP) successesThe Bongo programme continues apace, thanks to a dedicated band of conservation individuals who constantly seek out fund support from a variety of donors. Some of the funds go direct to the BSP whilst Rhino Ark secured funds from AFEW (The Giraffe Centre) of KShs 890,000 during the year and which form part of a two year commitment totaling KShs 4 million to support BSP in South Western Mau and Mau Mt. Eburu. The funds also go to the dynamic Bongo wildlife schools outreach programmes under BSP.

In addition to the funding mentioned above from Finlays, a further Bongo support project was initiated by Finlays for the South Western Mau region during the year.

Thousands to thankRhino Ark has an enormous following both in Kenya and now greatly developed overseas as well. Much of the fund raise focuses upon the annual Rhino Charge where individual car entrants make substantial pledges and raise even more than their pledge each year. It is a grass root conservation thrust within the Kenyan society that has now developed a deep foundation. Every donor knows that Rhino Ark’s ventures to secure the nation’s precious ‘water towers’ and to work in partnership with the government to ensure good governance for maximum benefits is yielding measurable results. The 2010 Environmental Assessment triggered by Rhino Ark and with support from UNEP and the East African Wildlife Society’s Kenya Forests Working Group (KFWG) has placed a value on the Aberdares alone at KShs 59 billion annually in good/services (water being the most important) and in biodiversity benefits.

It is always difficult to single out thanks in a report like this. Rhino Ark Charitable Trust has thousands of donors in Kenya and friends of Kenya overseas who support our home grown and home driven conservation initiative.

I thank all of you for your generous support.

I wish to specially thank the Rhino Charge Committee and the huge band of volunteers who yearly give so much time, thought, ideas and energy to running this unique event.

In July, Eburu forest is a cold and misty place, where temperatures regularly drop to single digits. It is to this chilly environment, on 30th July, that Rhino Ark warmly welcomed Safaricom Foundation’s Chairman, Les Baillie and Senior Project Officer, Keziah Imali for an inaugural 2-day orientation field visit. Safaricom Foundation is the single largest supporter of the Eburu Ecosystem Conservation Project, having committed Ksh 155 million in a 4-year grant towards the fencing of Eburu forest and support for ecosystem conservation activities.

The visit was jointly organized by Rhino Ark’s management team, headed by Executive Director Christian Lambrechts, and Kenya Forest Service, headed by Deputy Head of Conservancy (Mau) Alfred Abongo. The visit was designed to provide the Safaricom Foundation team with a basic orientation of the Eburu ecosystem and to report on progress made in setting up the project.

The first day’s itinerary included a visit to a community group project, the Ex-Lewis Self Help Group tree nursery, and an inspection of the Ole Sirwa community water point to the north of the forest overlooking Lake Elementaita. Here, community elders explained that water is piped to this location from a spring deep in the forest, and that it is the only source of water for many kilometres. The group then proceeded on an orientation tour of the Eburu forest and concluded with tree planting at Eburu Forest Station.

The second day’s itinerary focused on the southern area of Eburu, and included a visit to the Ndabibi centre, where the team inspected a collapsed borehole project and held discussions with local community leaders. The team visited two local community conservation groups, the Green Rangers tree nursery and the Eburu Forest Conservation and Beekeeping Group. Also visited was Ndabibi Primary School, where the team inspected the various livelihood and conservation activities undertaken by the school, including tree planting, fish farming and bee keeping.

The team also visited Finlays’ Kingfisher farm in Naivasha, the location of the recycled plastic fence post making plant which will supply posts for the Eburu fencing project.

2012 Aberdare Fence Run gets Royal NodOver 600 enthusiastic teachers and schoolchildren from 60 schools yet again demonstrated stamina and commitment to successfully complete the 400km, 2012 Aberdare Fence Relay Run. The Run – the third since its inception – is held annually to celebrate the completion of the Rhino Ark Aberdare Electric Fence in 2009. It is aimed at raising awareness among the youth living around the Aberdare mountain range of the importance of the Fence in conserving this critical water tower.

The Run was flagged-off on 12 June 2012 at Treetops Lodge by Rhino Ark Patrons Charles Njonjo and Lord Aberdare from the U.K. This year the relay also commemorated the Royal Diamond Jubilee, marking Queen Elizabeth’s 60th year on the British throne. It was

sincere friendship and good will, I send you my warmest greetings and best wishes for the forthcoming year.”

Also at the flagging-off event were three representatives from Aberdare in Glamorgan, Wales, two of whom ran the first leg of the relay.

Participating schools in this year’s Run were selected through an environmental essay writing competition organized jointly by Rhino Ark and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and each school provided ten pupils and one teacher for the Run. The schools each in turn received the Run Baton and ran several kilometres along their respective sections of the Aberdare fence line, over hills and valleys and along dusty rural roads to hand over the

Baton received from Kiguru Primary School at Run’s end

here that as a Princess on a visit to Kenya, she became Queen in 1952 on the death of her father, George VI. At the flagging-off ceremony, Lord Aberdare read out a special message from the Queen that stated:

“I am delighted that The Rhino Ark is holding this event to share the celebration in commemorating the Diamond Jubilee marking the 60th Anniversary of My Accession to the Throne. As a mark of

Baton to the next participating school. The Run traversed five counties and took two weeks to go around the entire Aberdare ecosystem.

The Run baton was formally received at Rangers Camp near Treetops by Rhino Ark Resource Development Manager Eric Kihiu, KWS Senior Warden Aberdare National Park, Felix Mwangangi and John Marete, District Officer (Kieni West Division) on 27 June 2012.

Rhino Ark NewsKenyan Minister for Finance referred to Rhino Ark’s conservation work at the Summit for Sustainability in Africa. On 24-25 May 2012, the Government of Botswana and Conservation International hosted a “Summit for Sustainability in Africa” in Gaborone, bringing together African heads of state and leaders from the private and independent sectors to explore how understanding, valuing and managing Africa’s natural capital can secure its future.

Hon. Njeru Githae, Minister for Finance, represented the Government of Kenya at the Summit. In his statement which focussed mainly on the water towers in Kenya, he highlighted efforts made to better understand the importance of, and to conserve these critical natural assets. He referred twice to Rhino Ark, first as an example of successful public - private partnership in conservation:

“In recent years, the Government has increasingly supported Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), reflecting the shared responsibility between the Government and the public in the management of natural resources. A successful example of such PPP is the fencing of the Aberdare ecosystem spearheaded by the Rhino Ark Charitable Trust, as a tool for reducing human-wildlife conflicts and to addressing uncontrolled exploitation of forest resources.”

as well as with regard to our efforts to raise the profile of the Aberdares through the Environmental, social and economic assessment of the fencing of the Aberdare Conservation Area report:

“In [a] study carried out in 2011 and commissioned by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Rhino Ark Charitable Trust, Kenya Forests Working Group and the Government, the economic benefits derived from the Aberdares Range forests were estimated at USD 0.7 billion a year.”

R E s u l t s

As we were setting out the day before the UK Rhino Charge 2012, the Clerk of the Course, Brian Hartley, dared to mention that this was to be the thirteenth UK Rhino Charge. We therefore have Brian to blame for the fact that a month’s rain fell on us at Pippingford Park on the actual day of the event! That said, he and his marshals managed to keep the event rolling superbly and the competitors found the tricky conditions challenging but very exciting.

There was an interesting variety of vehicles present at this year’s UK Rhino Charge. These ranged from out and out off-roaders to standard but able ones, proving once again that the weird and wonderful mixture of almost traditional trials sections, punch hunts, special tasks and navigation can be a great leveller. Consequently, this allowed a good team to do well regardless of the vehicle they were driving.

Kit Kaberry, now a veteran entrant in both the UK and Kenyan Rhino Charges, concentrated hard all day long in his well equipped Land Rover defender 90 TD5. Kit was rewarded with his first victory by the narrow margin of only twelve points over another regular, Ian Purcell, in his slightly battered but basically standard Daihatsu Fourtrac. Third place went to yet another seasoned Charger, Mark Morford, in a previously untried Suzuki SJ410.

Sachin Patel retired to his private beer tent to escape the torrential rain, with the excuse that his Range Rover pick-up totally lacked working wipers! Nevertheless, his superb fundraising efforts and pre-retirement score won him the title of Highest Fundraiser and the Victor Ludorum once again, giving him a place in next year’s Rhino Charge in Kenya. In his honour, the WTFAW trophy was re-named “Wipers to Find a Way” just for this year!

The final spectator Tiger Line competition went to Chris Smart in his Range Rover Buggy, closely followed by Ian Purcell and the enthusiastic Dash Patel in his Bush Crawler Range Rover bobtail.

In spite of the biblical weather, the competitors and spectators all shared a great time. That said, we need more of them to make this event worth all the effort that goes into it and to raise even more funds and awareness for Rhino Ark.

The UK Rhino Charge requires no more specialist equipment than a sense of adventure, a tow rope and the will to get out there and have a go for a great cause.
