Anniversary of Kristalnacht –

Film and Book DiscussionPresented by Dr. Martin GarfinkleWinston Churchill Walking with DestinyWalking with Destiny highlights Churchill'syears in the political wilderness, his early op-position to Adolf Hitler and Nazism, and hissupport for Jews under threat by the Naziregime. As historian John Lukacs explains,Churchill may not have won the War in 1940,but without him, the War most certainlywould have been lost. Sir Martin Gilbert, his-torical consultant for the film and Churchill'sofficial biographer, adds that had Churchill'swarnings about Nazi Germany's racial poli-cies towards Jews been heeded in the early1930's, the Holocaust may never have oc-curred. The film examines why WinstonChurchill's legacy continues to be relevant inthe 21st century and explores why his leader-ship remains inspirational to current day po-litical leaders and diplomats. The Lion’s RoarA uniquely powerful book illustrating how or-dinary people can become extraordinary bylearning and practicing the wisdom sharedwith them by great leaders of the past.Garfinkle combines the wisdom of Sir Win-ston Churchill, Franklin Delano Roosevelt,Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Rooseveltinto a weekly guide to give readers a pathwayon how to feel better, live better and enjoy abetter less stressful life. Global Jewish ConnectionsAs participants in UJA Federation’s Partnership 2000Grant, our JCC has developed a close and interactive relationship with our sister city in Israel (Pisgat Ze’ev- a suburb of Jerusalem) over the past eight years. Last year we welcomed Redbridge, England (a suburb of London) to this relationship and we are certain this will enhance what is already an incredible array of projects between the communities which have helped to strengthen bonds between us and prove most conclusively that we are all part of the Jewish Collective. Staff and Board members fromeach of the partner communities communicate on a regular basis. Teen delegations from Pisgat Ze’ev and Redbridge visited in August for a leadership retreat.

Acupunture Acupuncture is among the oldest healingpractices in the world. As part of traditionalChinese medicine, acupuncture aims to re-store and maintain health through the stimu-lation of specific points on the body. In theUnited States, where practitioners incorpo-rate healing traditions from China, Japan,Korea, and other countries, acupuncture isconsidered part of complementary and alter-native medicine.

HomeopathyWhat is homeopathy?Homeopathy, or homeopathic medicine, is amedical philosophy and practice based on theidea that the body has the ability to heal itself.Homeopathy was founded in the late 1700s inGermany and has been widely practicedthroughout Europe. Homeopathic medicineviews symptoms of illness as normal re-sponses of the body as it attempts to regainhealth. It is based on the idea that "like cureslike." That is, if a substance causes a symptomin a healthy person, giving the person a verysmall amount of the same substance maycure the illness. In theory, a homeopathic doseenhances the body's normal healing and self-regulatory processes.A homeopathic health practitioner (home-

opath) uses pills or liquid mixtures (solutions)containing only a little of an active ingredient(usually a plant or mineral) for treatment ofdisease. These are known as highly diluted or"potentiated" substances. There is some evi-dence to show that homeopathic medicinesmay have helpful effects. What is homeopathy used for?Historically, people have used homeopathy

to maintain health and treat a wide range oflong-term illnesses, such as allergies, atopicdermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and irritablebowel syndrome They have also used it totreat minor injuries, such as cuts and scrapesand muscle strains or sprains. Homeopathictreatment is not considered appropriate forillnesses such as cancer, heart disease, majorinfections, or emergencies. Homeopathy hasbeen widely used in India, England, and otherEuropean countries.

Spa @ the J Holistic Health Center is now offering Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy, Homeopathyand Massage. For information on fees, times, days and dates please call the Sports and Well-ness Desk at 718.475.5210 or e-mail Eileen Yard, Director of Wellness at [email protected].

HypnosisHypnosis is a popular technique used forweight loss, smoking cessation, healing, re-laxation and stress relief. It's used to get rid ofundesired behaviors and beliefs and to mani-fest new desires. If you want to influence your subconscious

mind to accept new programming for positivechanges, hypnosis is an effective method fordoing that. One of the main benefits of hypnosis is that

when you are in a hypnotic state, brain wavefrequencies slow down. You concentrate orfocus your awareness and are much moreaware than usual. A state of focused aware-ness almost feels as though you are more ofan observer of thought and images instead ofa part of them. This allows you to bypass the"gatekeepers" at the entrance to the subcon-scious and superconscious so you can accessthese levels of consciousness directly, and thebrain is much more receptive to suggestion. The unconscious, or subconscious can then bereprogrammed so it lets go of old patterns, beliefs and feelings that no longer serve you. They can be replaced with suggestions thatare positive and affirming. The supercon-scious mind can open new insights and cre-ative ideas. A common misperception is thatyou only have to be hypnotized once to makepermanent changes. Sometimes this is thecase, but for lasting positive changes hypno-sis suggestions need to be repeated severaltimes until your mind accepts the new pro-gramming.
