FROM MY HOUSE
TO YOURS
Dear Parishioners,
Happy New Year! No, I am not losing my mind.
The First Sunday of Advent in the Church’s calendar is the
beginning of the new liturgical year.
Advent is a time where we are actively waiting for
God. Active waiting implies being fully present to the mo-
ment with the conviction that something is happening
where we are and that we want to be present to it. A waiting
person is someone who is present to the moment, believing
that this moment is the moment.
In our personal lives, waiting is not a very popular
pastime. Waiting is not something we anticipate or experi-
ence with great joy and gladness! In fact, most of us con-
sider waiting a waste of time. Perhaps this is because the
culture in which we live is basically saying, “Get going! Do
something! Show you are able to make a difference! Don’t
just sit there and wait!” So, for us and for many people,
waiting is a dry desert between where we are and where we
want to be. We do not enjoy such a place. We want to move
out of it and do something worthwhile.
In our particular historical situation, waiting is even
more difficult because we are so fearful. One of the most
pervasive emotions in the atmosphere around us is fear. We
as a people are afraid – afraid of other people who may be
different, afraid of inner or uncomfortable feelings, and also
afraid of an unknown future. As fearful people we have a
hard time waiting, because fear urges us to get away from
where we are. If we find that we cannot flee, we might fight
instead. We are aware of the many destructive acts that
arise from our fear that something harmful will be done to
us.
However, our time of Advent shouldn’t be a wait-
ing time of fear. We need to be people of faith who are ac-
tively waiting for the coming of God. If we wait in the con-
viction that a seed has been planted and that something has
already begun, it changes our attitude in the way we wait. I
pray that this beautiful season of Advent will offer you the
opportunity to deepen your memory of God’s great deeds in
time and will set you free to look forward with courage to
the fulfillment of time by him who came and is still to
come.
God Love Ya!

The good news is that we have just

fall/winter weather, the seminarians sched-
ule and Fr. Rodia still out of commission;
we will be halting the blessing of homes
until the Spring. Thank you for your under-
standing and we promise we will get to
you when the sun comes out again!

O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Today we begin the season of Advent, a time which emphasizes patient waiting. Pa-tient waiting is essential to our relationship to the Lord and to one another Advent is the season of preparation for the coming of the Birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Although preparation in the secular world means shopping, cleaning, baking, cooking and entertaining, to authentically prepare for the Birth of Jesus Christ we need to prepare our-selves spiritually to receive the King of Peace. It ought not be four hours in Church and forty hours shopping. By increasing and intensifying our prayer life, both personal and communal, we grow in our anticipating the Birth of the Son of God. We invite you to attend daily Mass, pray the rosary, spend quite time in front of the Tabernacle or at home reflecting on our faith and plight of Mary and Joseph as they journeyed the last few weeks to a stable where Jesus Christ was born. Born of financial poverty but with plenty of love. A love that began with our Blessed Mother. We all need to have a peaceful and prayerful Advent and take the Gospel message to heart and "Be prepared” to welcome the Christ-child. The Advent Wreath is one of the most visible signs of Advent. The circular wreath reminds us of God who has no beginning or end. The evergreens, real or artificial, speak of the hope of newness, or renewal, of eternal life. The candles symbolize the light of God coming into the world through the Birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. The four candles, which denote the four centuries of waiting between the prophet Malachi and the birth of the Savior, represent the four Sundays in Advent. Candles can be purple or blue with one pink or rose can-dle on the third Sunday symbolizing joy. Each week we will offer an explanation of the next candle to be lighted and a prayer.
FAMILY MASS December 4th

Sunday of every month and we are looking for vol-
unteers for various aspects of the Mass. If you are

child participate, please call Maryellen at the Rec-
tory. Thanks.

Parish Registration
It is IMPORTANT that all Catholics
within our boundaries be registered
and be active participants of the
parish. Circumstances often change
registration status. If you can answer
“yes” to any of these questions, you need to be sure
you are registered correctly in the parish.
• Have you moved away from your parental home
(not just for college)?
• Have you recently changed your marital status?
• Are you living with your parents, are over 18,
and not receiving your own mailings and
envelopes?
If you answered yes to any of the above, please call
the rectory office to update your registration status.
If you made your sacraments here at St. Richard/Holy
Spirit or went to school here does NOT automatically
register you in the parish.
In order to receive a Letter of Eligibility from the
pastor to be a godparent or sponsor, you MUST be a
registered and active participant of the parish.
New families moving into the parish…..Welcome!
You can register online at www.strichardchurch.org.
