FROM MY HOUSE

TO YOURS

Dear Parishioners,

In the gospel today, Jesus illustrates for us the

power of forgiveness. We all know it is difficult to ask to be

forgiven. In fact, it is easier for us to boast when we have

done something good - at times to the point that we lose

sight of the bad things we sometimes do. As we look at our

first reading today, we find that David truly feels bad for his

sin. He knew that it was wrong and proclaimed this. Per-

haps David feared that God would take a terrible retribution

on him. But the response from Nathan is, For his part, the

Lord has removed your sin. This is akin to what we hear

from a priest in the confessional.

In the Catechism, we find that only God can forgive

sinners. The son of God also exercises this power, and Jesus

displays it in the gospel today. The woman’s faith has saved

her. It is very humbling to be forgiven of sins. It is also

wonderful and liberating to experience God the Father’s

boundless mercy, love and forgiveness.

Listening to Jesus’ story about the person who

owed a large debt that was forgiven, it seems we can all

find ourselves in this predicament. Sin has a way of weav-

ing itself into our lives. There is one wat to defeat it - to ask

for forgiveness and for the grace to overcome that sin, espe-

cially if it is habitual. In our psalm response, we pray that

the Lord will forgive the wrongs that we do.

What the woman in the gospel had done must have

been bad, or the Pharisee would not have pointed this out to

Jesus to make him realize who she was. Perhaps Jesus knew

who this woman was and what sort of sin she had commit-

ted. Yet, we see with Jesus that this did not matter. He was

going to forgive her. Also, to ensure that she understood she

was forgiven, Jesus added, Your faith has saved you; go in

peace.

It is by our faith that we know we will be saved. It

is by our faith that we understand the healing power of the

words of absolution by the priest in the confessional. It is

by our faith that we will know that Jesus loves us very

much, and that we can be forgiven of our transgressions.

David and the woman in the gospel both felt the healing

power of God’s love. May our faith be so strong that we

will feel it too! As we ask the Lord to forgive the wrongs

we have done, may we have the hope and faith to realize

that God loves us so much that he will, indeed, forgives us.

God Love Ya!

A Word From Pope Francis

God’s face is the face of a merciful

father who is always patient. Have you thought

about God’s patience, the patience he has with

each one of us? That is his mercy. He always

has patience, patience with us, he understands

us, he waits for us, he does not tire of forgiv-

ing us if we are able to return to him with a

contrite heart....Let us never tire, let us never

tire! He is the loving Father who always par-

dons, who has that heart of mercy for us all.

And let us too learn to be

merciful to everyone. Let

us invoke the intercession

of our Lady who held in

her arms the Mercy of God

made man.— Angelus, March

17, 2013

St. Thomas More & St. John FisherJune 25 All are invited to venerate the relics of two saints who ex-emplified courage and conviction in the face of persecu-tion, St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher. They were prominent 16th century Englishmen who stood against

King Henry VIII’s attempted supremacy over the Catholic Church, accepting martyrdom instead of abandoning their faith. It isn’t easy to stand up for your faith in the public square. Draw strength from those who already have! The sacred relics will be present at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia on Sat, June 25,
