D ear families: This Sunday’s readings speak to us about eternal life and resurrection. For this message, I am using the readings from the second book of Maccabees and the Gospel of St. Luke. The seven brothers we encounter in the Book of Macabees are models of faith. They heroically accept death, rather than betray God's law. Their belief in eternal life gives them the strength to remain faithful. This is similar to the faith that we see manifested in the early Christian martyrs, and which has subsequently emerged, time and again, throughout 2000 years of Christianity, whenever true believers were tested. Is there eternal life, and what of the resurrection? Today's Gospel presents Jesus' message about the afterlife. Jesus, through his life, death and resurrection, has shown us the way that leads to eternal life. In Jesus' time there were two religious groups, the Sadducees, who denied the resurrection, and the Pharisees who accepted it. A group of Sadducees raised the question of the resurrection in this way: a woman married seven brothers, one after the other, as they died. In the afterlife, whose wife will that woman be? To this Jesus makes them see that the afterlife is not like this life: "The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise”. In this life there is the attraction of the sexes, which is according to God's plan of creation, as He wants the human race to propagate on earth. Once our time on earth ends, the next life begins. Thus begins fulfillment of salvation, for the faithful. In the next life, things will be different, but we will be the same human beings who have lived on earth. Now is the time to be deserving; to help one another; to create; to leave behind us other generations living according to the will of God, revealed through Christ in His Gospel. In the next life, we will be in the presence of God, as brothers and sisters; as sons and daughters of the same Father. Eternal life, or resurrection into God’s presence, is the manifestation of total happiness. The achievement of this paradise is the consequence of our efforts to remain faithful to God, as we strive and struggle, in this life. So, we understand that we must walk on the path that God sets under our feet, in order to achieve the faith that will bring us through to the happiness that He plans for us, in the next life. If we turn away from this path, hard though it may be, and thereby reject the will of He who is Lord and master of all, we cannot expect to attain resurrection into God’s presence. In other words, God is not God of the dead, but of the living. Every human being will be held accountable to the Creator. Some will go on to eternal LIFE, while others will fall to eternal damnation.

Message from page 3…

We do not like to talk much about this subject, but it is the greatest truth of humanity: everyone is going to die; no one is going to stay here. The eternal question has always been: What lies beyond? Jesus' answer is clear, in the gospel: If you want to enter eternal LIFE, keep the commandments; if you want to risk damnation, ignore them. May faith encourage us to live every day in God's love. Father Celestino, Pastor

THANK YOU to all those who, in one way or another, contributed their time and talent towards the success of our 17th Annual HISPANIC FESTIVAL. Jesus is a friend to all who collaborate in just and good causes, for the sake of others. May God abundantly bless your sacrifices and generosity.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Increasing the Catholic Community's awareness about the Archdiocese for the Military Services in the United States is of critical importance. Its sole responsibility is for the spiritual care of approximately 1.8 million Catholic men, women, and children who hail from all 50 states and U.S. territories, including those from the Diocese of Venice.

Many of you may be veterans, as well as members of your family and friends. It is truly a selfless sacrifice to serve in the military whether here in the USA or overseas. I take this opportunity to extend my deep appreciation to all those in our parishes who have served or continue to serve to protect our country.

Military Chaplains bring the sacraments, faith formation and other ministries to the 1.8 million Catholics currently serving in the armed forces, their families, students at military academies, and veterans in VA Medical Centers. There are no territorial borders, or parishes with weekly collections to fund their mission. The Diocese of Venice will take up this collection on November 16 and 17, the weekend following Veterans Day.

There is great reason to support the mission of the Military Chaplains as they continue to face many challenges. Please know of my gratitude to you for your financial contribution, thus helping to ensure that our military personnel continue to have the spiritual support they need and deserve. Thank you for your generosity!

I take this opportunity to extend to each of you the assurances of my continued consideration as well as my prayers.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida

Prayer to Mother Cabrini, the Patron Saint of Immigrants

The prayer below was written by a Dreamer at Cabrini University. Please continue to pray for Dreamers. Mother Cabrini, Patron of Immigrants, who came to help those like me, who abandoned everything we knew. We left country, family, and friends to find a safer place. You embraced the freedom of America and I embrace it now. Sometimes, I'm afraid, anxious, and overwhelmed. I may be criticized, ridiculed, and misunderstood because I look, speak, and act differently. Yet, your love for all, especially the poor and the refugee, is my guiding light. It gives me hope. And I offer the prayer now, that you so boldly prayed then, "Dear God, fortify me with the grace of your Holy Spirit and give your peace to my soul." Amen. Written by a Cabrini University student, this prayer card was created by the Catholic Legal Immigration Network. To learn more about supporting immigrants, visit www.cliniclegal.org.
