COME AND SEE! Are you, or do you know anyone, who has not yet been baptized

or was baptized in another Christian faith? Ever wondered why

Catholics bless themselves with the sign of the cross, what they

believe about communion, what’s up with all those saints and

statues, and rosaries, and standing, sitting and kneeling? Why

does Mary seem so important? Well, why not come and see

and come and learn?

This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program

begins on Thursday, September 6. We meet in the Youth Room,

Room 120, in the school. The entrance to this room is opposite

our Chapel-Our Lady of San Juan. There is no cost, no obliga-

tion, no commitment necessary. In a series of friendly, informa-

tive and spiritually exciting classes we will explore the major

things Catholics believe and why. We will learn more about the

Mass and what is happening and why. Learn about prayer,

scripture, sacraments and Church history, and much more.

Are you Catholic and interested in learning more about your

faith? Would you be willing to be part of this program to be part

of a faith community willing to journey with and support those

interested in learning more about our faith? Now may be the

moment that God is calling you to be part of an exciting minis-

try.

So, if you are currently a non-Catholic wanting to learn more

about Catholicism, or a Catholic willing to be part of an exciting

ministry, please call Deacon John Kerrigan at (214) 886-8239.

God may be calling you. Listen, pray and come and see….

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR/CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO

4

Dear Parishioners,

The project of the exterior restoration of our church and adoration

chapel is completed. This work has been a grace for our parish as

we can now see a new and fresh look to these buildings that are our

spiritual home. We began on June 5 and the project was completed

on August 31. Both on the first and the final day a blessing was

given to the workers in petition and in thanksgiving to guide their

efforts and to keep them safe from accidents. By God’s grace, the

work was carried out without any accidents. This is an important

consideration considering the scope of the project and the height of

the buildings.

The church building was well planned from the beginning. It evokes

mission architecture with contemporary design. The four surfaces

of limestone, stucco, stained glass and terracotta tile were all ad-

dressed. The limestone was cleaned and sealed to prevent staining

in the years to come. The bright sunlight that we experience in Cen-

tral Texas reflects from the various shades of color produced by

minerals in the limestone to produce a spiritual effect. The stucco

surface was also cleaned to remove the accumulation of stains. We

were able to notice as the project advanced the meticulous work of

the laborers to seal the cracks and thus prepare the surface for

painting. Two coats of elastomeric paint (plastic solids in paint to

accommodate the contracting and expanding of the surface) were

applied in two shades so that the arches and crosses are highlight-

ed. The exterior design pressed onto the stucco and the two paint

colors effectively shows the crosses that are the namesake of our

parish. The cross that crowns the lantern above the altar area and

the cross and bell in the façade at the entrance area were painted

using a process to ensure that the golden color will endure on the

metal surface. Once the metal surface was cleaned, two coats of

automotive paint were applied and three clear coats of sealant.

The roof was repaired over a period of four days. The major area of

work was the seams and slopes coming down from the lantern (the

skylight above the altar area). In all, 35 locations were addressed

and about 50 tiles were replaced along the main surface and fif-

teen along the ridges. The six ridges on the top of the lantern were

repaired using stainless steel rivets and copper sheets were placed

beneath the tiles.

The adoration chapel is very dear to the heart of our parishioners.

The stones and interior beams are from the original church includ-

ing the cross in the tower and the bell. The exterior limestone was

cleaned and sealed to prevent staining in the years to come. This

includes the stonework around the chapel. The stones of the chap-

el wall are of special interest because many of them are fieldstones

and not from a quarry. This is to say that the stones were found in

a field and used to build the original church. The filigree cross and

the bell were also painted a golden color using the same process as

for the church.

The project of the exterior renovation of the church and the adora-

tion chapel project were funded by a donation from a parishioner.

The roof repair was financed through the parish operating account.

When the new church was built and dedicated in 2001 a carillon

system was installed to produce the sound of chimes and bells.

The system is no longer operational. I have researched a replace-

ment carillon system that has many capabilities to produce the

sounds that will promote an atmosphere of spirituality. It is in my

heart to ask that if you would be interested to donate a new system,

please call me at 512-312-2520 or send an email.

[email protected]

Lord, let the effect of your blessing remain with your faithful people

to give them new life and strength of spirit,

so that the power of your love will enable us to accomplish what is

right and good. Amen.

Queridos Feligreses,

y campanas.

The family of Juan Mosqueda, would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the

Parish of Santa Cruz Catholic Church, the ministry of Father Amado Ramos, and to the

members of the Santa Cruz Sacred Heart Men’s Club. The Mosqueda Family wishes to

convey our sincerest appreciation for the friendship, support and prayers that we have

received during this time of bereavement of our patriarch.

The family feels truly blessed by the outpouring of support from the Santa Cruz Parish

community, for allowing Juan Mosqueda the opportunity to have his Mass of Christian

Burial, at the Parish he served so many years as a volunteer and parish member. God

Bless all of you. The Mosqueda Family
