FALLEN KNIGHTS

Excuse our mistake

In the Spring 2015 newsletter, we erroneously reported that Bar-bara Mehalko Kolodey ‘50 had passed away. We apologized to Barbara for the error and she gra-ciously acknowledged she is alive and well living in Elyria, Ohio.

The alumni office depends on alumni to supply us with infor-mation such as deaths, marriages and address changes, which we use to update our database and also for the KnighTimes. Online newspapers have restricted infor-mation so unless a person is local it is difficult to recheck every fact. We ask that if you are emailing or calling us with news of a deceased classmate that you provide us with the date and place of death or an obituary.

Those who live here often say, “Nothing Changes”, but those who return for visits notice everything, from new street signs to painted store fronts. The Class of 1975, always giving back to the community, saw another op-portunity when they organized their Fortieth Reunion over the July 24-26th weekend. This time they purchased and planted a tree at the new Jr/Sr High School building — a living tribute to the school system that taught them in their youth and continues to mold those same ideals in the students today. Co-organizer, Les Voorhees, started a Facebook page, Toronto Close Friends, last winter for classmates to contribute ideas and pictures, but it quickly gained popularity with all Toronto alumni and exceeded 1000 members within the first weeks with current and former Torontoians contributing a variety of

pictures and topics. Today there are over 2000 members.

ALUMNOTES

Mario J. Tizziani ‘72 pastor of St. Ce-cilia Parish and School in Independ-ence, KY, received the 2015 Distin-guished Pastor Award from the Na-tional Catholic Educational Associa-tion for his dedication and commit-ment to excellence and support of Catholic education.

The NCEA recognizes pastors who have a clear philosophy of Catholic education, who support the school administration, provide spiritual guid-ance to the school community, partici-pate in school activities and work with the constituents of the school commu-nity, including the school board and parent-teacher association. They are also recognized for engaging the com-munity in providing financial support to the school.

“It was phenomenal,” he said. “It was a real blessing to be singled out for the hard work that we are doing here at St. Cecilia’s. It was an honor to be recognized for doing what I consider to be my day-to-day responsibilities as a pastor and I consider this to be an award not just for me but for the en-tire parish.”

Mario received his doctorate in educa-tion from Ohio State University.

“Perhaps one of the greatest ways that Father Mario demonstrates his love of Catholic education is the personal connection that he makes with the students, parents and staff who fill the school,” commented Principal Ken-dra McGuire.

The recipients were honored during the annual NCEA Convention & Expo held in Orlando, FL. Tizziani is one of the twelve national recipients of the award this year. He was nominated by a range of people including McGuire, faculty members, the presi-dent of the school board and school parents.

The nomination also was supported by Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mike Clines of the Diocese of Covington and Independence Mayor Chris Reinersmann.

“I congratulate the Rev. Mario Tizzi-ani on being awarded the Distin-guished Pastor Award at the NCEA meeting. Tizziani represents the Di-ocese of Covington well in his dedi-cation to a thoroughly Catholic school education. He has made all of us proud by receiving this award and I thank him for his zeal for Catholic schools,” said Covington Bishop Roger Foys, who was ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Steubenville and served in the local parish as Monsignor Foys.

Father Mario is a life member of the THS Alumni Association.

These teachers have brought recognition to Toronto High School throughout the state. Words that echoed throughout the nominations include dedication, devotion, quality and inspirational.” According to one nom-inator, “Being in the music program at Toronto does not mean you are becom-ing a better musician; you are becoming a stronger leader, a harder worker and a better person.” Kirk and Sally George retired at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. New Named Scholarship

Established or 2016

The Carolyn Argentine Byers Scholarship will be awarded next year to a graduating student in the class of 2016. The $500 annual scholarship was made possible through a contribution from Dolores Argentine Graceffa,‘50.

In establishing the scholarship in memory of her sister, Dolores said her sister, while not a professional caregiver, was a very nurturing per-son. “The kindness and encourage-ment Carolyn showed others and her willingness to help friends or even strangers whatever the need made a lasting impression on me,” remarked Dolores.

“I hope to help students wanting to pursue a career in nursing or the medical science field,” commented Dolores.

Carolyn‘53 was married to Dean Byers’52 and they raised six children and had ten grandchildren.
