Eye-catching from the Start... Motivator had created quite a stir when opening upsix lengths in his debut, a Newmarket maiden Aug. 13,but the dry conditions had kept him in his stall whilethe major prizes were played out over the summer. Hehad been training well for his second career start, how-ever. “He’s been doing it at home and I’m delighted hegot the chance to go through the gears,” Michael Bellsaid. “We’ve been very careful to protect him from thefast ground, and our patience has been rewarded.”Jockey Kieren Fallon reported that Motivator had felt a“bit flat” going to post, but was impressed with him onthe way back. “He got there too soon and idled, but itwas a big step up and he proved how good he is,” hesaid. “If something had come to him he would haveshown more gears, and he’s got a great attitude.”Michael Bell revealed that the G1 2000 Guineas atNewmarket may be on the agenda before a tilt at theG1 Epsom Derby in June. “He’s got plenty of speedand wouldn’t be inconvenienced by a mile,” Bell said.“He’d be fine on ordinary good ground and he’ll bestronger next year.” Most bookmakers were offeringMotivator at 16-1 for the 2000 Guineas. Prices for theEpsom Derby ranged between 10-1 and 20-1.

Praise for the Also-rans... Aidan O’Brien was not disappointed by the effort ofthe runner-up, Albert Hall. “He probably found theground a bit difficult and is best on good ground, buthe’s a big rangy horse with scope so he’s a horse tolook forward to for next year,” O’Brien said. JockeyTed Durcan was even more enthusiastic about third-place finisher Henrik. “We’re over the moon with him,”Durcan told Sporting Life. “He’s run a huge race, butthe ground has found him out. He’s got plenty ofspeed, but it was blunted by the ground today. He’sgoing to be a smashing horse over a mile on betterground next year.”

Earlier this week, ebullient trainer Graeme Rogersonreceived a call from a potential buyer offering A$10million the elegant Savabeel and responded typically,“Which leg do you want?" As Cox Plate fever intensi-fied this week, Rogerson earnestly touted the colt, whowas coming off a win in the Oct. 2 G1 Spring Cham-pion S. at 2000 meters, as the best horse he had evertrained. Still, the three-year-old remained a glaring omis-sion from every tipsters' selections. “All the expertssaid he couldn't win, but he is the best horse in Austra-lia and you won't buy him now for A$20 million, I'll tellyou that much,” an emotional Rogerson said. “I knewhe could do it, he was running the sectionals in hiswork. I put my reputation on the line, and maybe I amnot such a bad judge.”

Breaking the Sophomore Jinx... Aided by a superb ride from Chris Munce, Savabeelbecame the first three-year-old since another son ofZabeel (NZ), Octagonal (NZ), got the job done in 1995,and he beat a genuinely wor-thy field to capture the South-ern Hemisphere'sweight-for-age showpiece.Savabeel drifted from 8-1 to14-1 on course as CaulfieldCup victor Elvstroem(Danehill) rapidly assumedfavoritism. The sophomoresettled third, some four lengths behind Regal Roller(Regal Classic) and Miss Potential (Dolphin Street {Fr}),but as the field bunched at the home turn, Munce letthe long-striding colt go. Fields of Omagh gave his all, powering home from sixth, but under his light weight,Savabeel would not be collared, while the much-hypedStarcraft scrambled out of a pocket to capture thirdahead. Munce said he worried that his mount wasracing too fiercely early. “He was unbelievable,” therider said. “I thought he was going too hard and de-cided there was no use both of us pulling. He was a lotkeener that I wanted him to be, so we ended up threedeep and three off the lead, and with no weight on hisback, I wasn't going to wait for them to come. He findsplenty under pressure, and he loves it. There's a lot ofdepth to him.” Savabeel becomes his sire’s 29th Group1 winner. He will make his next start in Saturday’s G1Victoria Derby as he aims to become the first horse in30 years to do the double. Favored Elvstroem lackedpizazz, settling for sixth from the rear.

Stretching outwhile taking on graded-stakes foes off that effort, hewas ignored at odds of 14-1, but led from gate to wire, cutting out soft fractions before holding off fellow 14-1shot Pellegrino in the dying strides. “I knew we werewalking,” winning jockey David Flores said. “It was justa matter of who was going to move early, but nobodywas in a rush so I took my time on him. He loves torun, this horse, and he’s very sharp.” Continuously(Diesis {GB}), the 13-10 chalk, trailed the field early andhad no rally late, beating just one horse home. “The turfwas too hard for him, that’s all,” jockey Corey Nakatanisaid. CLASSIC, POWERED BY DODGE, $4,000,000,3yo/up, 1 1/4m Two Classic contenders tuned up at Lone Star Parkyesterday morning. Roses in May (Devil His Due), unde-

feated in five starts this year, was out on the track first, go-ing five furlongs in 1:01 1/5.The move was just what trainerDale Romans was looking for.“Perfect,” Romans said. “Idon’t think he could haveworked any better. He didenough and still had a lot ofenergy afterwards. It was the

last big hurdle and now we just jog and gallop the restof the time.” He added, “He hasn’t missed a beat since[winning the Sept. 18 GII Kentucky Cup Classic]. He’sgotten better with every race and trains better into thenext race every step of the way.” Also working yester-day, GII Meadowlands Cup runner-up Dynever(Dynaformer) went a half in :48 3/5. “It was a routinework, nothing special,” said Christophe Lorieul, assis-tant to trainer Christophe Clement. “He ran two weeksago, so he doesn’t need much.” Four-year-old Dyneverwill be making his second start after a three-monthlayoff in the Classic.

JOHN DEERE TURF, $2,000,000, 3yo/up, 1 1/2mT GI Man o’War S. hero Magistretti (Diesis {GB}) hadan easy six-furlong breeze on the Lone Star turf yester-day. Working around the “dogs,”, the four-year-oldwent the distance in a leisurely 1:20. “I think it was hisnormal work,” trainer Patrick Biancone said. “It was aneasy work, just to see how he handled the track. Heworked beautiful on it--it’swhat we were looking for.” Kitten’s Joy (El Prado {Ire})also stretched his legs at LoneStar yesterday, going his five-eighths in 1:06 3/5. “He goteverything he needed,” trainerDale Romans said. “Whenyou’re going around the‘dogs’ like that, the time isn’t the most important thing. It’s how much the horse has and how he feels.”

VO5 F/M TURF, $1,000,000, 3yo/up, f/m, 1 3/8mT Trainer Jimmy Toner was worried when told his F/MTurf hopeful Wonder Again (Silver Hawk) had beentimes going five furlongs in 1:04 4/5, but he felt a lotbetter when it turned out that the time was a bullet, and that Turf choice Kitten’s Joy had been clockedgoing nearly two seconds slower. “We wanted to go in1:01, but if she was faster than anyone else, that’sgood,” Toner said. “[It] shows she shipped in well, she’s on target and she’s training well to the race. Nowwe just have to play with her the rest of the week.”

JUVENILE FILLIES, $1,000,000, 2yo, f, 1 1/8m Enduring Will (Arch) will be forced to miss the Juve-nile Fillies after coming down with the flu. “She’s ascratch,” trainer Al Stall Jr. confirmed yesterday.“We’re very upset. It stings. She’ll be over it in about24 or 48 hours, but we’re not going to compromise herin any way by taking any chances.”

Gathering Storm: Making her stakes debut in today’s $75,000 MissGrillo S. is the regally bred My Typhoon (Ire) (Giant’sCauseway), who posted an eye-catching maiden win at

Saratoga Aug. 29. But trainerBill Mott is waiting to see whathis charge does here beforegoing overboard. “She was onthe lead and no one challengedher, but I guess what I saw herdo looked pretty good,” he ac-knowledged. “It would havebeen nice to see her behindhorses, swoop by the leaders

and to see what kind of acceleration she had, but itwas a nice effort.” Mott has a twist ahead for thedaughter of Arc heroine Urban Sea: her next start willlikely come in the GII Demoiselle S. Nov. 27 at Aque-duct on the main track. “That’s my plan,” he explained.“I’d like to run her on the turf and then wind up theseason on the dirt. That would help determine what wedid with her next year, whether we stay strictly ongrass, or have the option of running on the dirt. Sheworks really well on the dirt.” The chestnut, a record-priced weanling in Europe and a half sister to dualDerby winner Galileo (Ire), is 8-5 on the morning line forthe Miss Grillo. Jerry Bailey, who piloted the Live Oakcolorbearer in her debut, has the mount once again.
