Hard Skills and Soft Skills (and How to Use Them on Your Resume)
A combination of hard skills and soft skills forms a well-rounded job applicant. While hard skills are quite different than soft skills, together, they create a good balance between hard knowledge and interpersonal attributes. Hard skills show mastery and proficiency while soft skills show communication and relational abilities.
Hard Skills Hard skills are taught skills. They are quantifiable and are often learned in school, through earned certifications, or in previous work experience. Hard skills are specific to each job and are often the basis of job requirements. Recruiters look for hard skills on your resume to gauge how well you’d be able to perform job duties. Hard skills are especially important because of the applicant tracking systems (ATS) used by most large companies that rank and filter applications. Hard skills can also be considered “resume keywords,” which are words recruiters use to search for applicants. Each resume should use the exact hard skills found in the job description.
Soft Skills Soft skills include any skill that can be classified as a personality trait or habit. Interpersonal skills and communication skills are more specific categories of soft skills that many employers look for in job candidates. Soft skills are often transferable across careers and industries. Exercise 1: Imagine you are reviewing a resume for a software engineer. Circle the skills below that would be considered “hard” skills and put a star* next to the “soft” skills.
- Javascript - Detail-oriented - Superior time management - Java - Linux - Work well under pressure
This applicant’s hard skills demonstrate a very different, very specific competence compared to their soft skills. The balance of hard and soft skills is important. Hard skills help the applicant get past applicant tracking systems while showing experience level and qualification for the position. Soft skills make the applicant human, showing leadership, empathy, and character. Exercise 2:
Fill in the blanks of the two lists below: one of hard skills and one of soft skills you possess.

How to Write a Summary of Qualifications
Below you will find the definition of Summary of Qualification, learn how to write your own, and see many examples. Some Reference Material from How to Write a
Summary of Qualifications for a Resume by Carrie Shea Thomas Summary of Qualifications (Replacing the Objective) is 2 concise sentences with bullets to emphasize accomplishments and is the first section listed on a resume. It is a summary of your most pertinent experience and qualifications that is customized for the position for which you are applying. This is also a place where you can reinforce attributes that you have substantiated in the body of the resume. Use the job description to help identify the areas of expertise, distinction, traits and related experiences you have without using the words “I” or “My”.
How to Write
Brainstorm about the skills and attributes that you possess. These skills need to pertain to the type of job you are trying to obtain. It might be helpful to reference the job description. Start writing down skills such as Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, Created employee handbooks, Ranked No. 1 salesperson in past two positions, etc. Write down as many as you can and then narrow the list later. It can also be helpful to brainstorm with someone who knows you in the working world, because they might be able to suggest traits that you were not aware of.
Review your list. You might be able to combine multiple items to create one thorough bullet point. For example, list items such as Proficient in AutoCAD, Completes projects under budget and goal-oriented could be combined to read AutoCAD professional with a track record for finishing projects on time and under budget.
Compare your list to your work experience. Does your list help summarize your work? Does your list summarize the skills for the job you want to obtain? If not, work on creating a more accurate list. If your list includes "Ability to read people" and you have held jobs that do not require customer service, adjust your skill to read "Ability to work well with a team by understanding the needs of my peers."
Narrow your list to three to five bullet points that most accurately and effectively summarize your work experience. These bullet points are the first list on your resume and can be the only area a recruiter may read; make sure that these bullet points reflect how you want to be summarized as a potential candidate. Keep in mind that a resume is never complete, and new work experiences or a new career direction affect the content of your summary of qualifications.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
What are ATS and how do they work?
Many large organizations rely on applicant tracking systems (ATS) to help pre-filter resumes. The systems work by scanning resumes for contextual keywords and key phrases, mathematically scoring them for relevance, and sending only the most qualified ones through for human review. Top employers hire for several jobs at a time and receive hundreds of resumes for any given opening. Applicant tracking systems keep all these resumes in one place, helping recruiters and hiring managers stay organized as well as EEOC compliant. In theory, these systems also save time by automatically surfacing and highlighting top candidates. In reality, ATS do help hiring professionals narrow their applicant pool, but top candidates slip through the cracks. There are dozens of different ATS, each with their own features, strengths, weaknesses, and quirks. Here are just a few of the top ATS: Taleo Workday SuccessFactors Greenhouse Brassring iCIMS Jobvite Lever SmartRecruiters JazzHR CATS BambooHR Some applicant tracking systems can automatically compare your resume to the job description. For example, Taleo calls this feature “Req Rank,” which ranks each applicant based on how well their resume scores based on the job description. Instead of reviewing each and every application, the recruiter can focus squarely on candidates the ATS has identified as a great match.
How to “beat” applicant tracking systems:
Carefully tailor your resume for each and every job you apply to
Directly address qualifications found in the job description
Increase searchability by adding resume keywords based on the job description
Focus on the most impactful information in your work experience section
Keep your resume formatting simple so that an ATS can accurately parse it
Use Spell-check and proofread your resume to avoid errors
Formatting your resume for ATS: Only include the usual sections of a resume: Qualifications, Professional Experience, Education, Skills, and the like. Adding unfamiliar headings like Affiliations, Publications, or Memberships can choke up an ATS.
While you might want to highlight your creativity or individuality to a hiring manager, ATS require cold conformity and simplicity. Therefore, you’ll need to delete any extra touches you’ve added to your resume, like logos, pictures, symbols, and shadings. Also, stick to standard resume formatting in a normal font like Arial, Courier, or Times New Roman—the ATS can’t read fancy fonts and will reject your resume out of confusion. Finally, make sure you’re submitting materials in the appropriate, requested format. For example, you may have an awesome PDF version of your resume, but make sure you have a simplified Word version available, too. Many ATS’s allow you to upload your resume and automatically pull information into the appropriate application fields. But if your resume is laced with fancy layouts, images, and fonts, it often botches that upload and makes it difficult for the ATS to read your resume details.
Using Correct Keywords:
For any profession, there’s always lingo, software, responsibilities, basic skills, and licenses or certificates associated with performing the job well—and an ATS will be looking for key phrases and contextual information related to those qualifications. To make sure the software recognizes that you’re a good fit for the job, use these tips to successfully keyword optimize your resume:
Include verb phrases and skills written in the job description on your own resume. These are very likely to be the same keywords and phrases the hiring manager has programmed the ATS to pick up—“project manager,” “Final Cut Pro,” or “social media marketing,” for example.
Try services like Wordle and TagCrowd to help you figure out which keywords to focus on. Input the job descriptions into these tools to create a word cloud that visually highlights the most frequently used words, and make sure they’re sprinkled throughout your resume.
Use both the acronym and the spelled-out form of any given title, certification, or organization, so you’re set regardless of which format the ATS is looking for. For example: Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
