INTRODUCTIONDIGITEL High-Volume Samplers DHA-80 arefully automatic systems to sample dust andaerosol particles for later assessment andanalysis (gravimetric and analytical determination). The sampler operation rangein standard execution is 100 to 1.000 litresper minute (6 to 60 m3/h). DIGITEL HVS DHA-80 has a magazine of 15 filters stretched infilter holders. They are changed automaticallyto the low position at the pre-set time. Thedevices can be integrated in automaticmonitoring systems via various interfaces. Thefield housing of the DIGITEL HVS DHA-80 issuited for outdoor installation. It is easy totransport and because of a good soundinsulation very quiet. Superior workmanship insampler mechanics backed by the latesttechnical and electronic control will guaranteea long life-time and an absolutely reliableoperation.

ADVANTAGESAn integrated microprocessor unit controlsthe filter changes at the exact pre-set timeand collects all relevant data and events. Thestatus "work" and "pause" (filter change) canbe programmed with a resolution of oneminute. The constant flow of sampled airthrough the filter is dynamically controlled, sothat this value is kept at good reproducibilityand at long-term stability which keeps to aminimum of electrical power consumption. The blower unit is maintenance free andensures a long service life (MTBF > 36.000hours). All mechanical components of thechanging automatics as well as the units

needed for measurement have been furnished with a highly corrosion-resistant andextremely smooth "Ematal" surface. Low flowvelocity at the large surface filter. Due to thelarge surface filter there is a low flow velocityand because of the homogenously loading ofdust and aerosol particles on the filter, the filter allows to be segmented for differentanalyses. Different interfaces for data transmission and remote control. The systems are in operation in important monitoring nets at home and abroad.

DESIGN AND OPERATIONThe air is sampled via a preseparator (1),using a sampling tube, vertically from the topto the bottom through the filter (3) placed inthe separator chamber (2). The top part of thefilter separator chamber operates as a diffuserwith regular cross section and cares forhomogeneous loading of the exposed circularfilter. The face velocity of the sampled air onthe filter, 0.5 m/s at 500 l/min flow rate, is lowbecause of the relatively large filter diameter. The pressure drop across the filter is limited to130 mbar, so that a rupture of damp orextremely loaded filters is prevented. The DIGITELHVS DHA-80 changes the filtersautomatically. After the filter, the transportedair quantity is measured using a flow meterwith a floater (5). Its double photo-sensor(5a) optically senses the floater position.

In connection with the control electronics (5b,5c), the capacity of the blower (6) is adaptedto the rpm control, so that the air quantitykeeps the set-point value. Air pressure andtemperature are measured upstream (8) theflow meter and continuously averaged by the controller. A real-time protocol states sampling volumes yielding from the samplingtime and controlled volume flow as the coreinformation. The air is released from theinstrument with reduced noise through thenoise baffle (7). The sampling protocol lists the effective and the standardized averagedvalues of pressure and temperature for thatperiod and the operating as well as the failurestatus. The DIGITEL HVS DHA-80 has amagazine of 15 filters stretched in filter holders. They are changed automatically tothe flow position at the pre-set time. The unitis constructed strictly modular, so that allelectronical and mechanical function blocksare easily replaced. The DIGITEL HVS DHA-80 is tried and tested in practice in the monitoring nets of different European countries. These longterm and varied fieldexperiences have led to the efficiency and reliability of the equipment. The DIGITEL HVSDHA-80 is described in the VDI/DIN guidelineVDI 2463 page 11. In connection with a DIGITEL PM10 pre-separator (DPM 10/30/00)or a DIGITEL PM2,5 pre-separator (DPM2,5/30/00) the system is approved accordingto reference method EN12341.

In connection with a DIGITEL PM01 (DPM01/30/00) PM01 measurements can bemade. On the illuminated LCD display thecurrent state of the sampling course can beread at any time (e.g. program status, currentstatus, failure indication mess-ages). In caseof power failure, all settings are kept stored. The time program is then internally runningin the standard pre-setting. Therefore, programmed filter change times are notpostponed in case of meantime powerinterruptions. The DIGITEL HVS DHA-80supplies a series of digital interfaces toconnect the protocol printer, to activate theremote control and to manage data input andoutput using different formats (eg. Bayern-Hessen, AK, TCP/IP, etc.). An analogueinterface enables t h e easy external registra-tion of the sampling course as well as for theremote control. All mechanical components ofthe changing automatics and the units need-ed for measurement included the filter holder, have been furnished with a highly corrosion-resistant and extremely smooth Ematal

surface. The DIGITEL HVS DHA-80 isequipped with a protection class IP54 fieldcase. For that reason it is immediately suitablefor direct open-air installation under Europeanstandard weather conditions. The fieldhousing is double-walled and this leads toa considerably improved thermal insulationof the samplers internal space.

The extraordinary compact type ofconstruction, especially the low depth, allowsthat even the field equipment can be space-savingly installed in a container.

ACCESSORIESFor total suspended particulates (TSP) sampling, there are two differently designedpre-separators available: a cylinder probe(EMPA/UBA probe); and a probe of open circular slot according to VDI.

For PM10 or PM2.5 sampling preseparatorswhich are designed as single - stageimpactors are available. They are intended for an operational volume flow of 30 m3/h.

    Approved according to reference methodEN12341.

For PM1 sampling pre-separators which aredesigned as double-stage impactors areavailable. They are intended for an operationalvolume flow of 30 m3/h .

Protocol printer, memory card (PCMCIA) forthe recording of operating and error status inreal time.

Interfaces RS-232C, RS-485, Ethernet, analogue, radio modem (via RS-232C) fordata logging and remote control.

Directional sampling dependent on winddirection and wind speed.

PAH hand changed cartridge holder or cartridge changer for the sampling of aerosolsand volatile substances with PU-foam orgranulates in serie to the current filter.

The DHA-80 is available in various housings:container housing, 19 housing for rack-mounting.
