    The church was

    erected in 1811

    as a place of worship

    for the local Church of

    Ireland Community. It

was funded by a grant of

    800 from the Board of

    First Fruits. The Architect

    was James Payne and

    the architectural style is

    known as First Fruits

    Gothic. A dwelling house

for the resident minister, called the Glebe, was also

    provided across the road

    from the church. The

    church closed in 1964

    and has lain vacant and

    in disrepair since then.

It is a stone built structure with cut

limestone detailing. Orientation of thebuilding is approximately East-West.

The walls are supported by 4 buttresses

at the corners. A square bell tower

was added to the original structure in

1834. The building is surrounded by

a cemetery with an underground vault

    to the rear.

    Paddy Clancy of Gortnaglearagh,

who lives a few hundred yards from

the church, has fond memories of

helping his father James to replace

the front door of the building with an

oak framed door in the gothic style. It

was in the early 1940s and his father

had also the task of distempering the

    walls and doing general maintenance

of the building for the church body.Paddy remembers a small stairs inside

the front door leading to the rst

oor of the tower which was the level

for ringing the bell. Lucas Wade was

the clerk of the church at this time

and Michael Doggy Nash was theclerk of the nearby Catholic church..

The story goes that at 12 midnight

on New Years Eve, there would be a

    competition between Lucas and Doggy

as to who could keep their bell ringing

the longest. Paddy also remembers the

Harvest Festival in the grounds of the

church every year. This comprised a

display of crops such as corn, potatoes

and all types of vegetables and owers

    followed by a thanksgiving service.

    Afterwards, the attendees would retire

to the Glebe for some refreshments. The

last member of the Church of Ireland

community to reside in this house was

Miss Graham who was originally from

Castlecrine and when she died in themid fties she was buried in a private

    family plot in Castlecrine.

    The Kilkishen Deelopment Association,

chaired by Mike Hogan, is the leading group

of this project. It was they who realised

the potential of the building, arranged

    feasibility studies, negotiated with the

owners, appointed a building design team

and co-ordinated with local and other

statutory authorities. The total project cost

is in the region of 550,000. Well over half

of this amount will be funded from Irish

and European sources, leaving the balance

    to be locally funded.

    A fndraisin committee, under the

chairmanship of Patsy Neville and report-

ing to the Development Association, was

set up to source local funding. This com-

mittee has prepared a fundraising plan

which is detailed in this brochure.

    The fundraising committee comprises

the following people. Patsy Neville (chair-

man) 087 9691415, John Lyons (deputy

    chairman) 087 678 1833, Olivia King 086

    Development Association.

A Reest for Contined Spport from

the Chairman of the Kilkishen Deel-

    opment Association.

Since the closure of the Church of Ire-

land Church in 1964, the local commu-

nity have been anxious not to allow this

ne 200 year old building to fall into dis-

repair. For several years, the acquisition

has been on various agendas of Muintir

Na Tire guild, the Community Council

and more recently the Kilkishen Develop-

ment Association. Finally in 2010, when

the building became available, a three

man negotiating team from the Kilkish-

en Development Association was set up,

namely Joe Meaney, John Lenihan and

myself. Following a series of meetings

with representatives from the Church of

Ireland; Rev. Bob Hanna and Edwin Bai-

ley, a deal was brokered pending plan-

    ning permission.

A planning team was subsequently put

in place to develop the project, this team

is made of the :- Joe Meaney, Genevieve

    McHale, Elizabeth Brady, John Lenihan,

Oliva King, Patricia Ryan, Noel Scanlon,

    Margaret OHalloran, Gwen Bowen and

myself. A Feasibility Study of the building

was carried out by Stanford Architects

Ltd. with the help of a LEADER grant and

plans were drawn up. A fundraising com-

mittee is now in place under the leader-

ship of Patsy Neville. The committee has

put ambitious plans in place to raise the

necessary funds and have already raised

approximately 10,000 in a short space

of time. I wish to thank all those involvedto date for their support and dedication.

What was a community dream is now be-

    coming a reality.

With your help we can bring this proj-

ect to fruition for current and future gen-

erations, so please support our ongoing

    nancial activities.
