Tiger Talk submitted

We hope everyone enjoyed their nice wintery long weekend. The school year is winding up very quickly as Mrs. Joseph handed out the exam time table this week. Exams for Grades 7 - 9 begin Tuesday, June 16, less than a month away shortly followed by Grad on June 25. If you stop by the school, check out Meghan’s Grads of 2015 bulletin board in the main foyer.

Mrs. Greig’s class has been busy in the past couple of weeks with students giving speeches and this week they are each giving a demonstration. So far they have learned all about bicycle repair, origami, saddles and how to make chocolate chips, which was a big hit with everyone!

On the baseball scene this week, Grade 11 student Kaylin Hall, who is our only lady playing ball this year with Elkhorn, was in Killarney for Zones on Thursday. They defeated Deloraine last Tuesday to get there.

The boys baseball team competed at Zones in Elkhorn on Tuesday defeating Virden 9 - 3 in their first game. Unfortunately, they lost their game to Bossevain 5-4.

Our girls rugby players, Jaimie Campion, Kristen and Kayla Kirkpatrick, are having a phenomenal season with the Souris Sabres rugby team. They are undefeated with 297 points scored for and 14 against. They played Crocus Tuesday in the semi-final round and with a win there will play either Minnedosa or Dauphin on Saturday. With their record so far this year it looks like they will be heading to Provincials on May 29 and 30 in Winnipeg. Good luck girls!

Track and Field practice continues at lunch time with varsity track on May 26, middle years on June 3 and the annual elementary Tabloid Day will take place Friday, June 12.

Friday, May 22, Mrs. Greig’s Grade 6 class attended an Ag Safety Day at Tundra Oil and Gas Place in Virden. Also on Friday Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Wray took the Grade 9 and 10 classes on a geo cache adven - ture to hike in the Moose Mountains and a visit to Cannington Manor. We will report more on their field trips next week.

It was another busy week at Reston School!

Alstone Notes George and Donna Jago

attended some of the RBC games in Portage last week. Congratulations to all the players and we are very proud of our grandson, Tanner.

Clara Jean Nash enjoyed supper on Monday night at Shirley and Ken Moore’s.

Nellie enjoyed visiting with Evelyn and Ian Hutcheson on Monday and also called in at Brockman’s.

Marion Mayert had a nice visit with Linda Morrison of Ladysmith, BC on Friday. Linda was at the noon meal and is here to visit her mother, Clair Deacon in the Willow View PCH.

Marion also attended the 60th wedding anniversary of Al and Maxine Bloomer on Saturday.

Bob and Marg Froese spent the weekend with their family in Brandon.

Giselle Cudmore of Rivers, MB, visited Aunt Nellie on Saturday after - noon on her way back from visiting her parents, Anne and Henry Boutin at Carlyle, as well as uncles and cousins there and at Manor, Wauchope and Redvers.

Maxine Wray was out to the farm to help Owen cele - brate his 4th birthday.

The wild, windy and snowy weekend spoiled many people’s thoughts of going to a sandy beach to sun themselves.

Christine Kabbeke was a welcomed visitor with Nellie on Tuesday evening. We both like to read and share some of our books.

On our Guest Book: May 15 - Tannis Bertholet, Alice Paul, Florence Cowan, Shirley Abbey; May 16 - Jack and Brenda Roberts, Souris, MB visited Muriel Mayberry; May 20 - Tom Campbell - meeting of the Board.

Some people insist upon always having the best of everything except manners.

A fellow has to pay for

cigarettes twice: when he gets them and when they get him.

Alstone Notes Virginia Campbell and

Rosina McLean of Sinclair drove to the Tilston area on Saturday.

Giselle Cudmore of Rivers, who is Nellie Morris’s niece, visited her on Monday afternoon on her way to Carlyle to spend some time with her parents, Anne and Henry Boutin. Giselle and Bruce got back recently from spending a few months in the US.

Maxine Wray went to Jack and Trudy Wray’s on Saturday and came back on Monday. For Mother’s Day, she received some beautiful plants and solar lights.

Ike Klusendorf had her daughter, Nadine Lloyd of Winnipeg visit for a couple of days. For Mother’s Day, she got a beautiful bouquet of flowers, breakfast in Brandon and the fixings for a good supper.

Shirley Paton had a nice Mother’s Day supper with Robert and Melissa Paton and family of Oxbow, SK.

Marion Mayert enjoyed Mother’s Day supper at Jan and Glenn Caldwell’s.

From May 7 to 10, Muriel Mayberry went to Cardale camping with the Good Sam’s group.

It was cold but did not spoil their weekend as a won - derful time of games, food and fellowship was enjoyed.

Dale Hawkins was a visi - tor last Friday evening with Joyce. Donald Hawkins was a Sunday dinner guest with his mother and also went for a nice drive. Cathy Williamson is also a visitor.

Betty Slessor had nice phone calls from all her fam - ily on Mother’s Day.

She also enjoyed working for two days in the Alstone kitchen.

Jack Russell and Les McCune are out every day “rain or shine” on their scooters and then sit and sun themselves at times.

Carol Stairs got a beau -

tiful bouquet of flowers from her daughter in Winnipeg for Mother’s Day. On Sunday night, she enjoyed supper with Sherri and Gerald Bartel.

Leona Braun got food items for Mother’s Day - that is always welcome.

Barb Elliott of Pipestone was a Saturday afternoon visitor with Sid and Dorothy Jago.

Clara Jean Nash had sup - per at Ken and Shirley Moore’s for Mother’s Day. Jean Moore was also there. Clara Jean got nice Mother’s Day gifts for inside and out. Some folks have guard dogs but she has a guard bear at her door.

Buck Martin is enjoying the Alstone meals and Lee Morris enjoyed a visit with Buck when he came with a large outdoor plant for Mom’s Mother’s Day gift.

Mother’s Day at Sacred Heart Church at Virden was also First Communion of two girls and three boys. This brought a lot of extra rela - tives so the church and parish centre were full. After Mass Fr. Eric asked all the mothers to come up for a blessing and Henry Polk of the Knights of Columbus gave the ladies a rose appliqué.

It was the regular first of the month brunch so many were not able to get in. Nellie and four family members did get in and enjoyed the meal supplied by the C.W.L.

Tuesday afternoon, there was an art class held which produced little plant pot cushions - several of us were just observers in the lounge.

A key ring is a handy little device that was invented so you could lose ALL your keys at once!

Bigger Piece One night at the dinner

table, the wife commented, “ When we were first married, you took the small piece of steak and gave me the larger. Now you take the large one and leave me the smaller. You don’t love me anymore. ”

“Nonsense, darling, ” replied the husband, “ You just cook better now.”

The Jotbook Summer

Again, I am asking for your help. If you know of anyone with an interesting hobby, someone who has excelled in sports or in their field of occupation, give me a call. I will be taking summer holidays and would like to have stories done ahead of time.

Broomhill Dog Trainers I received a message from Colvin and Mazie

Davis, handlers at the Broomhill Field Trials. They will again be making the trek from Alabama to Manitoba in July. “ We take only a limited number of dogs for training on our bird-rich Broomhill grounds, ensuring each dog has all the opportunities to reach its full potential. Decades of experience and success developing pointing dogs on wild birds. Colvin’s goal: to surpass your expectations for your dog’s summer prairie training. To send your field trial dog/personal hunting dog to the Canadian prai - ries with Colvin and Mazie Davis (leaving early July), call to reserve your dog’s spot today. Colvin: 334-462-1898 or Mazie: 334-412-4904.”

RCMP Historical Case Unit is pursuing new leads in 1985 homicide

On May 20, 2015, the RCMP Historical Case Unit is conducting a renewed search of the site where the remains of Michael Kalanza were found in 1997. In 1985, Michael Kalanza went missing from Faulkner, Manitoba. In 1997, a group of Grade 9 stu - dents from Ashern School went on a field trip to the old Spearhill limestone quarry. The students unearthed the human remains. DNA testing con - firmed the remains were those of Michael Kalanza. An extensive review of the case has been performed and created new investigative pathways, which the RCMP are actively pursuing. Investigators have made inquiries in the community, which has yielded new information. They have resubmitted DNA exhibits to undergo further testing with advanced technology and have done further forensic analysis on evidence with techniques not available at the time of the initial investigation. Today, RCMP investiga - tive teams are at the limestone quarry where the remains were found and are conducting another forensic search of the area. Unsolved RCMP cases remain open and active until a conclusion is reached. RCMP are asking anyone with information to con - tact theRCMP Historical Case Unit tip line at 204- 984-6447 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1- 800-222-8477.
