We Make Reston, an INSIDE OUT Project, created by the people of Reston
and coordinated by Reston Community Center and the Initiative for Public
Art – Reston, showcases our community’s greatest strength – the multi-
tude of perspectives and histories our people bring to Reston. This exhibit
features large-scale photographic portraits representing the diverse faces
of Reston. There are four locations throughout Reston: the Lake Anne sea
wall (located across the water from Heron House), the Jo Ann Rose Gallery
at Reston Community Center Lake Anne, South Lakes High School, and
the Comstock properties located at the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station.
More than 300 completed entries were received. All of the entries that met
our criteria (nearly 200) are pictured in this booklet. One hundred and sixty
nine images were selected to appear in the large format (36” x 53”) public
exhibitions at the four locations throughout Reston.
This project launches a diversity dialog that began 50 years ago when
Reston was founded as the first racially integrated housing community
in Virginia. Starting in September 2015 , through a series of community
discussions, we will explore issues of diversity, disproportionality, how the
justice system in our country functions, and how we can achieve greater
opportunity equity – not just equality. RCC and its partners hope these
dialogs will help us reconnect to and sustain our founding values and how
we live them.

About INSIDE OUT INSIDE OUT is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into giant black and white portraits displayed at various locations. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally uploaded images are made into posters and sent back to the projects’ group leaders, for them to exhibit in their own communities. Exhibitions are then documented, archived and made available online at www.insideoutproject.net.
The INSIDE OUT Project is a creation of the artist JR, recipient of the 2011 TED Prize. An INSIDE OUT Group Action happens when one or more group leaders commit to leading their own independently organized project somewhere in the world. Group leader(s) choose a statement and gather a minimum of five participants to have their portraits taken with the statement as their focus. About Initiative for Public Art – Reston (IPAR)IPAR – founded in 2007 by Reston civic and community organizations and leaders – is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that seeks to inspire an ongoing commitment for public art and create a new generation of artworks in Reston. It imagines public art throughout Reston that inspires the community and engages the mind and senses. For more information about IPAR, visit www.publicartreston.org.
