GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OFSCRIPTURE - December 19, 2021 - 4th Sunday of Advent

St. Augustine tells us that a “Christian is a mind through which Christ thinks, a heart through which Christ loves, a voice through which Christ speaks and a hand through which Christ helps.” As we look around and out at the world, we do not have to search too far before we come face to face with inequity and injustice. There is so much unfairness, prejudice, anger, hatred, violence, and want. The stories of human heartache, people being hurt, deprived of life’s necessities, loneliness, and sickness are far too commonplace. For many of the world’s ills, the vices of greed, lust, pride, gluttony, and jealousy are clearly among the more significant root causes. Why doesn’t God just step in and fix this mess? After all, God created this world, and one would hope that he would step up and take some measure of responsibility for it! Once we sit with this thinking for a while, we can begin to realize just how flawed it really is. God did take responsibility and God did fix the problem! God sent us Jesus Christ as the divine solution to the world’s ills. It is not God who has shirked responsibility, we have. We are the ones who continually fail to set our own personal needs, wants, and securities aside so that One more powerful than us can use us. Mary had to set her needs aside in order for the Son of God to come into the world. Put simply, Mary listened and believed. Having opened herself to being an instrument of the Divine, God could use her as his mind, heart, voice, and hand. She became God’s vessel so that God’s greatness could reach the ends of the earth and peace could come upon the world. God’s fix for the world’s difficulties is you and me. We are the ones who confess that Jesus Christ came into the world as the Son of God, the Prince of Peace, and herald of justice. All we have to do is believe, as did Mary, that what has been spoken to us by the Lord will be fulfilled. Then, we can step aside and be the Christians we claim to be. What a difference it would make if every person who professed to be Christian truly understood that their one and only voca-tion is to be God’s instrument. What a beautiful, equitable, and just world it would be.

Prayer During A Health Crisis

Compassionate and Loving Father,In the face of confusion and concern

impart to us the calm of your presence.

In You allow us to find hope and healing.

Be with those who serve the sick and give them Your caring hands.

Be with those who lead and give them Your Spirit of wisdom. Be with those who have fallen ill

and give them Your comforting heart. Wrap your arms around our world and hold us in your love. Allow us at this time of trial to then

serve as instruments of that love to all we meet. We ask this in Your Name.

Amen.

Saints of the Week

Dec 21st-Tue-St. Peter Canisius, Priest and Doctor of the Church-Peter was born at Nijmegen in the Gelderland (now part of Holland) in 1521. He studied at Cologne, en-tered the Society of Jesus, and was ordained in 1546. Sent to Germany, he strove mightily for many years with pen and tongue to defend and strengthen the Catholic faith. Among his many books, the Catechism is the most important. In 1597 he died at Fribourg, Switzerland.Dec 23rd-St. John of Kanty, Priest-This priest, a Silesian by birth, was nearly all his life a professor of Sacred Scrip-ture and other subjects in the University of Cracow. He im-posed penitential conditions of life on himself, and his goods were always at the disposal of the poor, who often “cleared him right out.” He died in 1473 and was canonized in 1767.

Coming Events at OLP

"Are you yearning for a way to make Advent and Christ-mas more meaningful? This year, the OLP choir will be offering a musical novena leading up to Christmas Day and the festive Christmas Season that follows. It is a musi-cal setting by a local artist (Dr. Robert Klimek- CO School of Mines), and will be a beautiful way to prepare for the coming of Christ, apart from secular influences. Please join us as we reflect on the Old Testament prophecies and proclamations pointing to the coming of our savior, in a contemporary choral vesper-type service. The "Procession of Days" will begin each of the 9 evenings leading up to Christmas Day at 6pm, December 18, 19, 20, 21, and 23 at 6pm at OLP; December 22 at 5pm at St. Eliza-beth's, and December 24th at 9pm (before the 10pm Christmas Eve mass). There is no obligation to attend all 9 evenings, but even one night will touch your heart and affect your preparations for the Lord's coming. (Attending more than once will even further facilitate un-derstanding, appreciation, and reflection on the abundant and rich texts presented in the music.) We hope to see you there.
