Motivation: The Origin of the Proton Spin

ΔΣ + ΔG + Lz

√s = 500 GeV polarized pp collisions Probe the quark and anti-quark spin contributions via

high momentum muons from the W bosons Need to at least increase rejection factor of muon arms

trigger by a factor of ~100. We need a trigger that is sensitive to the muon

momentum. Need to introduce timing information in the muon trigger

to reject beam backgrounds.

PHENIX RPC detector requirement Our requirements are very similar to those of the CMS end caps RPCs.Therefore we have takenadvantage of their extensive R&D efforts.

Bakelite: Produced, QA, Cut and Cleaned in Italy. Completed 5/09 Gas Gap: Produced for RPC 1 and 3 by Korea University. Completed 10/9/09Frames and Signal Planes: Produced in China (CIAE).Final assembly is being done at BNL.

Noise Rate Number of strips vs. noise rate (for all 48 modules in RPC3N)

Mean value of noise rate is 0.5 Hz/cm2.Only 7 strips are over 10 Hz/cm2

Threshold is 160mV.

PHENIX is on schedule.• Extensive quality control of modules has been

completed.• RPC3N was installed in 2009.• RPC3S was installed in 2010.• First physics run scheduled to start late this

year.
