Summer is around the corner Affordability onthe rise: surveyACCORDING to a Commonwealth Bank-Housing Industry Association affordabilitysurvey, housing affordability has improved inPerth by 6.1 per cent for the March 2011quarter, and by 6.6 per cent in regional WA.

HIA senior economist Andrew Harveysaid the improvement was due to a growth inaverage weekly earnings and a softening indwelling prices in a stagnant market.

“Improved affordability is great news forhome buyers, particularly first-home buyerswith sound financial positions who have beenconsidering entering the market in 2011,” hesaid.

Reports coming out of some Perthsuburbs suggest that improved affordability isone of the factors that have resulted in firsthomebuyers trickling back into the marketrecently.

These reports were in line with REIWA’sanalysis of March-quarter sales, which saw anincrease in sales of cheaper properties, withfirst-home buyers representing a respectable23 per cent of sales.

RBA deputy governor Ric Battellino, in arecent speech to stockbrokers, said thatdespite being more exposed to interest raterises, Australian households were notsuffering extensive mortgage stress.

“Mortgage lending in Australia hadbenefited overall from safer lending standardsand the strong labour market,” he said. ■

Adrian entered the real estate sector in1995 and forged a successful career inmarketing a number of near-city residentialdevelopments.

He also project-managed the constructionof a large commercial development of 21factories in Bentley, before joining Kareena at

her real estate business Quin Ballard inComo.

The success of their family name in thelocal area led to Kareena and Adrian formallymarketing themselves as Team Ballard afterthe merger of Jones Ballard in 2007.
