RESERVOIR PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER No. 1 6 th February 2018 Welcome everyone Welcome to our returning families and those who are new to Reservoir Primary. I trust you all had a lovely break and your children are ready for the school year ahead. Interestingly, the students seemed very happy to be back at school with their friends again. New Staff We have two new staff members to welcome; Nez Yon is teaching Group 12 upstairs and Ursula Woods is teaching Group 7 for most of this term while Luisa Macheda is on leave. Today will be the first and last time we distribute a paper copy of the newsletter. From now on we shall publish it on COMPASS every fortnight. SO if you are having trouble accessing COMPASS, please some and see Connie Williams or the office staff. More information about COMPASS: February 6 th , 2018 Dear Parents / Caregivers, Compass is a school management platform, which we use at Reservoir Primary School. STUDENT AWARDS: Because the first week of school was so short, we shall begin presenting awards this week

LOST PROPERTY

After Day One last week we had a lunch box, a beautiful little hair clip and a small calculator handed in as lost property.

Some hair decorations are already causing problems – getting lost and causing a few arguments. So maybe the big colourful hair adornments can be left at home – they are certainly not part of our school uniform.

Clothing and hats were also left lying around. Luckily we could return these to their owners as names were clearly displayed. PLEASE Name all your children’s clothing items!!

In the first few weeks, teachers will be talking with your children about ongoing policies and practices, so I thought it wise to keep you informed and remind you also; that way you will understand exactly what your children are telling you. We are a “water only” school! School Council agreed a few years ago that other drinks are unsuitable to bring to school: milk or yoghurt based drinks are unsafe to keep out of a fridge for a period of time and fruit based drinks and cordials are full of sugar (either natural or added). Both cause problems after those little spills too! Therefore, water is the best, and Melbourne water is probably the best you can get anywhere. Water bottles are compulsory, and our school bottles are provided to new students who receive one on arrival. You can take them home to clean, rinse out or even freeze overnight; but they can only contain water and they must be at school every day. If your child needs a new bottle, they are available at the office for $4.00. New lids are available on request free of charge. Students playing sport must have their water bottle with them. The bottles we provide are safe for regular use (BPA free). Healthy food is very important for all children. When we have our break at 11.00am a small snack is eaten and then at 1.30pm the children eat their lunch. When you organise lunches for your children, please consider the health value as well as the appropriateness of what they bring to school. Meats and yoghurts are always risky and are not recommended, particularly in warmer weather. Consider also those processed snacks you might include such as packets of chips; I know it’s easy to pop them in, but they have absolutely no health value at all and will not sustain your child throughout the day; definitely not brain food! Fruit is always a great option as are those vegetables that are easy to eat such as carrot, celery, tomatoes and cucumbers. Our Free Fruit Friday program begins this week; your child will receive free fruit on Friday mornings at their break. This means only fruit can be eaten at recess on Fridays. We will inform the children on Thursdays, which fruits will be available. That way, if they choose not to eat the ones we offer, they may bring their own fruit from home. Just a final reminder that bubble gum and soft drinks are banned from the school at all times. Lollies are also discouraged; kids come to school to learn and concentration is required. We know that children cannot concentrate after a handful of “red lollies”. The colouring and sugar in lollies is certainly not helpful in providing the necessary attentiveness. Students should not have mobile phones or iPhones at school. If there is a specific reason why you feel your child needs to bring a phone, you need to speak to Connie Williams, Elizabeth Bogdanovski or myself. We will send home with children a small pack of “pay-in” envelopes; these should be used for any amount of money brought to school at any time. It is a regulation to inform us if your child is absent from school, and “unauthorised” absences are not ideal from anyone’s point of view. If you have any concerns or questions don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or someone at the office. All parents will be able to access Compass on either a computer, ipad or phone to record absences for their children; this will be available as soon as you receive your individual logins.

SUBWAY LUNCHES: start this week. For new families to the school: Order forms are available in your children’s classroom

or attached to the Newsletter. The order needs to be completed clearly and placed in one of our envelopes with the CORRECT money. This order then needs to be brought to school on Thursday. But the actual lunch is for FRIDAY. Please find attached the Subway order form for 2018. NOTES TO SIGN: This week your child will bring home two notes; to be read, signed and returned to school as soon as possible.

1. The first is a multi-permission note which includes permission for local walking excursions, having photographs taken and published at school and medical information .

2. The second note is our e-Smart Student/Parent agreement and contract which outlines expectations for the

safe and acceptable use of digital devices.

GATES The gates will be closed each morning at 9:05am so if children arrive at school after 9:05am they must come to the front office in Duffy Street to get a Late Pass. In the afternoon, the gates will be open at 3:15pm.

SCHOOL PHOTOS The School Photos will take place on Monday the 26th February 2018. Envelopes will be sent home with the children as soon as they arrive so you are able to select your pack and order photos. More instructions will be sent once we receive the envelopes.

RPS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL When: 10:00am – 3:00pm, Friday February 16th 2018. Where: Edwardes Park Athletics Track. In 2018 we will be hosting our very own school athletics carnival for students in years 3-6. The date has been set and is fast approaching. All students will participate in a range of track and field events, with outstanding performers chosen to attend the upcoming Keon Park Sports District Association (KPDSA) athletics carnival. As we will be walking to the park on the morning of the event it is important that a multiple permissions form has been returned to school prior to the day. This will ensure your child can participate in the carnival. We invite all families along to show their support!

FAMILY NIGHT Our family night is being held on Wednesday the 28th of February. Please keep this date free. Flyers will be sent home soon with more details.

SCHOOL COUNCIL Our first School Council meeting for 2018 will be held on Monday the 12th of February at 7:00pm.

As we grow in number, management of

situations arise that we need to address. One of these is the access through the front door of the

main building. The office does get very busy, so we ask you to

use other ways of accessing the school yard.

Please only use the main building if you need to speak with Kerry or Melissa in the office.

When bringing your children to

and from school,

we ask that you do not walk

through the main building!

Gates on either side are open

at the usual times.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE:

There is NO SCHOOL for students on Monday (12th March) and Tuesday (13th March). Monday is a Public

Holiday and Tuesday is a Curriculum Day.

YOU CAN DO IT Reservoir Primary school is proud to be a You Can Do it School. The YCDI program is integrated into all areas of school life. The You Can Do It program’s main purpose is in identifying the social and emotional capabilities that all children need to acquire in order to be successful in school. It ensures their wellbeing, and encourages them to have positive relationships including making contributions to others and the community (good citizenship). There are 5 YDCI keys which are the foundations of the YCDI program Getting Along Confidence Persistence Organisation Resilience At Reservoir Primary School we focus on a new key each term. Each week a nominated class will receive a You Can Do it award for demonstrating qualities of the key within a given specialist area. They receive a certificate in assembly on Friday morning and then celebrate with the Leadership Team where they discuss the reason they received the award.

Getting Along

Getting Along means being friendly and nice with classmates and adults, including those who have different backgrounds and cultures, working well in groups, solving problems without fighting, following important school rules and helping to make my school a better place to live and learn.

Examples of Getting Along Behaviour:

Working well with my classmates on projects. Listening and not interrupting when someone else is speaking. Talking rather than fighting when someone treats me unfairly. Not breaking important classroom rules Helping someone who has a problem.

Organisation Organisation means setting a goal to do my best when learning something new. When I have a project or activity to complete, it means thinking ahead about the steps I have to take to be successful. Organisation means planning my time so that I’m not rushed and having all my supplies ready. Examples of Organised behaviour: Making sure I understand my teacher’s instructions before I begin work. Having all my school supplies ready Having a neat desk and school bag so I can find everything. Planning when I’m going to do my homework so I have enough time

TWO THIRDS OF KIDS ARE DRIVEN TO SCHOOL BY PARENTS, SURVEY REVEALS Posted in Inform by Eliza Murray Worry over their children’s safety means most parents are driving their kids to school every day, according to a Heart Foundation report, raising concern about the health of school kids who are living increasingly sedentary lifestyles. Over 2000 adults were involved in the survey conducted by the Heart Foundation’s Live Lighter campaign, with the help of Cancer Council Victoria. Three-quarters of adults said that they drove to work, and 64 percent said they drove their kids to school – citing inconvenience, or lack of accessibility as reasons to avoid walking, cycling, or using public transport. More than half the parents who responded said they thought it was important for kids to walk to school, however, worry about their safety or lack of infrastructure meant they were unlikely to let them. Governmental guidelines recommend an hour of moderate to vigorous exercise a day for school-age children. Regular exercise helps children focus in school, makes sure they are properly tired by the end of the day, and helps protect against health problems later in life. Even if you do drive your kids to school – let’s face it, sometimes cars are the only option – there are ways that you can help incorporate more activity into the day. Park further away from the school and walk with your child until you’re confident they can walk alone. You’ll also avoid the stress of bumper-to-bumper traffic in the drop-off zone! Enrol your children in after-school sports activities or group. They get to exercise and socialise, and when you pick them up you’ll have skipped rush hour! Arrange with your kids to meet them at a spot 10 to 15 minutes walk from their school. Perhaps more convenient for you so they can get some activity and you can avoid sitting in traffic.

What is Ride 2 School ? Ride2School is a nationwide program delivered by Bicycle Network, designed to support schools to encourage, empower and enable more students to get physically active on their journey to school.

To do this they work with schools, students, parents and local government to cultivate active and healthy school communities. Reservoir Primary is a proud supporter of this program and we hope all our students and families join us during this active way of travelling to school.

What is Hands Up? HandsUp! counts help schools measure their progress in supporting more students to become physically active. The Ride2School HandsUp! system is a key reporting tool used by schools in the program.

Schools can measure the number of students riding and walk to school

The information collected can be used to advocate for improved walking and riding in the local community

During each month there will be a nominated day where Ride2 School is encouraged and promoted. Look out for these dates listed in our Newsletter each fortnight.

Kind regards, Maria Mirasgentis
