The process of making a video can be broken down into sections; planning, fi lming and finally editing.

The average video will usually take 3 to 4 weeks to complete; up to a week to plan and agree locations etc., usually two 12-14 hour days fi lming all the shots and then about 2 weeks or so to edit all the footage.

The purpose of music videos for the companies is simple; they are a tool to making more money and therefore more profi t.

Artists are promoted and more known to the public through their music videos as they are shown everywhere. This means there face, star image and persona is created and understood by the audience.

They become more known and more famous, thus more people buy their songs and albums which leads to the amount of profi t the companies make increasing.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A MUSIC VIDEO FOR THE COMPANIES?

The purpose of a music video for the artist is to get themselves more known to the public so people know who sung that song.

They want the public to know what they look like, associate them with a certain image or persona so that they become more popular.

The diff erence between the artists and the companies is that the sole purpose and aim for the artists isn’t just to make money. Of course they do it to make more money for themselves, but the want to be known for their music and for more people to enjoy their music.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A MUSIC VIDEO FOR THE ARTISTS?

The average music video can cost anywhere between £70,000 to a few million pounds. That is how much the larger record labels will spend on music videos on average. The most expensive music video ever made was Michael

and Janet Jackson’s video for their song ‘Scream.’ This video cost a colossal £7,000,000 to create.

Obviously you can create a good music video with a small budget and this has been done. A very famous music video that was created on small

budget was the video for ‘Sabotage’ by The Beastie Boys.

HOW MUCH MONEY IS USUALLY SPENT ON THE ON THE AVERAGE MUSIC VIDEO?

YouTube; this is a very common way for people to view and watch music videos. They are free to watch on this site so a lot of people take advantage of this in order to watch the video and listen to their favourite artists songs.

Music Channels e.g. Kiss, The Box, Kerrang etc.; these channels show bands and artists music videos all day on various diff erent television networks. Again, these are free to watch if you have a digital television. A lot of people nowadays watch music videos through this.

Music on Demand; this is also a free service on certain networks such as Virgin. You can select a music video to watch and also on these services you tend to find interviews with the artist where they may talk about their song and the video. This has become a very popular way of watching music videos.

HOW DO AUDIENCES ACCESS MUSIC VIDEOS?
