Research Grants – 15th April, 2011 The WADA's Health, Medical and Research Committee (HMRC) has identified relevant areas of research in the field of anti-doping, in particular those related to the List of Prohibited Substances and Methods in sport. WADA promotes and funds, on a yearly basis, scientific projects in the anti-doping field covering the development or optimisation of analytical tools for the detection and/or quantification of doping substances or methods as well as the pharmacology of such substances and the ergogenic effects of specific substances/methods or group of substances on athletic performance. For 2011, submission of research projects covering the following topics is encouraged: A) Detection of prohibited substances/methods: classic methodologies in analytical chemistry, and in

particular research addressing the detection of doping substances and methods using liquid or gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, or new methods in analytical chemistry

B) Detection of prohibited substances/methods: immunological and biochemical methodologies, and in

particular research addressing the detection of doping substances and methods using immuno-based assays (enzymatic assays, flow cytometry, etc.), and biochemical methods (e.g., IEF, SDS-PAGE, etc.).

C) Detection/identification of novel doping trends, and in particular research addressing the following:

The detection of gene doping and gene manipulation

Methods for non-invasive imaging

Identification and validation of molecular signatures to detect use of prohibited substances and methods

The detection of cell grafting with either autologous or non-autologous cells

Identification and/or detection of novel substances (not on the current Prohibited List) with suspected doping potential (e.g., drugs newly approved or in advanced clinical development; substances with clinical or field evidence of abuse)

D) Pharmacological studies on doping substances/methods, and in particular research addressing the

following:

Establishment/improvement of threshold values for prohibited substances showing doping effect above a certain dose or depending on route of administration

Pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics as well as gender, ethnic, and environmental factors affecting metabolism and excretion of prohibited substances and methods.

Sponsor: World Anti-Doping Agency RDA contact: Kate Nolan extn 81326 Post-Ph.D. Research Grants – 22nd April, 2011 These grants are awarded to individuals holding a Ph.D. or equivalent degree to support individual research projects. The programme contributes to the Foundation's overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation. The Foundation supports research that demonstrates a clear link to anthropological theory and debates, and promises to make a solid contribution to advancing these ideas. There is no preference for any methodology, research location, or subfield. The Foundation particularly welcomes proposals that employ a comparative perspective, can generate innovative approaches or ideas, and/or integrate two or more subfields. Sponsor: Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, Inc. RDA contact: Jo Stone extn 9533 Alternatives to Animal Methods Research Grant Program – 22nd April, 2011 The mission of ARDF is to fund and promote the development, validation, and adoption of non-animal methods in biomedical research, product testing, and education. Preferential consideration will be given to

proposals that utilise human rather than nonhuman vertebrate tissue. Proposals are judged primarily on the basis of

(1) the extent to which the project will significantly reduce or replace laboratory animals and

(2) scientific merit and feasibility. Proposals will not be considered if the project uses intact, nonhuman vertebrate or invertebrate animals or uses monoclonal antibodies produced by in vivo methods. If antibodies are used at all, ARDF prefers non-animal methods of generation as well as production. Source and production method for all antibodies must be clearly identified in the proposal. ARDF strongly encourages investigators to reduce or eliminate the use of serum or medium supplements obtained from non-human vertebrates (for example, fetal bovine serum) and expects investigators to consider how such products, if currently used, might be phased out as the project progresses. Sponsor: Alternatives Research and Development Foundation RDA contact: Kate Nolan extn 81326 A Grand Challenge for Development – 22nd April, 2011 USAID, Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and The World Bank have joined together to launch Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development. The call is for groundbreaking prevention and treatment approaches for pregnant women and newborns in poor, rural communities around the time of childbirth. Innovative ideas that can leapfrog conventional approaches are critical in this area. To accelerate substantial and sustainable progress against maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths at the community level, we need innovative prevention and treatment approaches across three main domains:

1. Science & technology;

2. Service delivery; and

3. Demand-side innovation that empowers pregnant women and their families to practice healthy behaviours and be aware of and access health care during pregnancy, childbirth and the early postnatal period, especially the first two days after birth.

Priorities are for investment in approaches that incorporate the latest scientific, technological, behaviour change and information and communication advances into radical solutions with substantial impact. In addition, there is a need to understand how best to scale up innovations in each of these domains so that they reach their target populations, which may draw upon private sector expertise and engagement in deploying and sustaining solutions. Innovation in these areas will complement other existing efforts and calls for action to strengthen health systems and to target broader determinants of health including poverty, inequity (including gender), and access to water and sanitation resources. Audacious but achievable ideas with the potential to lead to transformational change will be swiftly funded through at least one of two funding streams:

1. Seed Funds to demonstrate proof of concept

2. Transition Funds to transition successful innovations toward scale up.

These investments in high-risk, potentially high-return projects are aimed to identify and support transformational approaches to women's and newborns' health that can be scaled up to dramatically - and sustainably - reduce deaths and poor birth outcomes for millions of women and newborns in the hardest to reach communities of the world Sponsors: USAID, Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and The World Bank RDA contact: Emma Hughes extn 81344

Grand Challenges: Biomarkers Grant Opportunity – 22nd April, 2011 for Letter of Intent The goal of this programme is to test biomarkers to enable characterisation and validation of markers for diagnosing tuberculosis (TB). Projects that will be considered for funding will investigate specific biomarkers for which there exists a preliminary base of evidence, but for which additional data is required to determine utility for diagnosis. This can include biomarkers where the hypothesis derives from novel biological concepts in pathogen (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) or host biology, and/or promising methods or concepts from other research areas applied to TB using a rational approach. For the purposes of this programme, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will only consider the investigation of biomarkers for which there is a clear hypothesis that measurement or detection of the specific biomarker is linked to the presence of TB; the Foundation will not consider unbiased biomarker discovery efforts. Within the Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Tuberculosis research programme, candidate biomarkers can be pathogen (M. tuberculosis) or host derived and proposals can focus on one or multiple biomarkers from either or both classes. Applicants must provide a description of the methods of testing and analysis of candidate biomarkers including plans for determining quantitative levels of the biomarkers, if applicable. Proposals should focus on the methods for evaluation of the candidate biomarkers and the development of evidence for the sensitivity in patients with paucibacillary disease, and specificity for TB over other lung diseases and infection with non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Due to the heterogeneity with which investigators could select criteria to define TB cases and controls, funded projects will be provided access to a standardised set of control and confirmed TB case samples and should not include in the proposal plans to collect additional or separate samples. If samples beyond those available (e.g. in number, volume, or type) are needed for the funded projects, these will be made available through additional collections with input from the investigator(s). The long term goal of this programme is to provide evidence/validation for candidate biomarkers that will enable development of a rapid, simple to perform, low cost diagnostic test for use in developing countries that can be performed in clinics without access to a laboratory. Proposals should focus on measurement of biomarkers that can be performed directly on patient samples and/or with minimal, short processing or stimulation steps. Projects funded through this Programme will be considered Phase 1 grantees in the "Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Tuberculosis" research programme. Promising candidate biomarkers or combinations of biomarkers at the end of Phase 1 that have demonstrated proof of concept for utility in diagnosing TB in the samples provided will be eligible to apply for follow on funding in Phase 2. Proposals for Phase 1 funding are eligible for up to $750,000 total cost per project in funding for Phase 1. Individual programme budgets should be representative of the scope and magnitude of the proposed studies. The proposal should clearly identify decisions and endpoints that will fit within a time frame of up to 24 months in Phase 1. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation provides limited indirect cost in accordance with its policy. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation RDA contact: Emma Hughes extn 81344 Research Grants – 22nd April, 2011 AICR awards grants to support fundamental or translational research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. AICR does not support clinical research. AICR will consider applications that include some clinical research in a project that is mostly basic or translational. However, completely clinical applications, such as intervention studies, clinical trials or health care delivery research are beyond the remit of AICR. Projects are for a period between one and three years and can include funding for research staff (postdoctoral and/or PhD students), consumables, essential items of equipment and travel. demonstrate their ability to conduct the research proposed and show how the project will benefit the research profile of the individual and the discipline. The 2011 round will focus on quality projects that address or respond to contemporary and future challenges to, or have implications for, accounting and finance practice, policy and/or the professions. All applications must be focused on "mentoring of developing researchers," and must involve at least two applicants - the first applicant will be the "developing researcher" while the second applicant will be an "established researcher," taking on the role of research mentor in the context of the grant proposal. A developing researcher is someone who does not have more than three publications in refereed journals. All areas of accounting and finance research are encouraged. All applicants must be full-time academic staff and the first named applicant must be a current member of AFAANZ. Applications must clearly indicate if they have been submitted elsewhere for funding. The application must include written support from the Dean/Head of the relevant university organisational unit.
