Research and Opportunities Fair March 27, 2015

RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL ENHANCEMENT AT ROLLINS The power of scientific discovery drives us and defines our profession. The RSPH research portfolio has the potential to save lives, benefit communities, empower individuals, and directly impact that practice of public health. Research is one of the principal missions of RSPH and a major activity of faculty and students alike. Students have the opportunity to work on research projects such as assessing the health risks from environmental exposures, the health consequences of urban sprawl, cost effectiveness of HIV prevention activities, infectious disease control, culture and health threats, health disparities, substance abuse, and a myriad of other Public Health related topics. At the Rollins Research & Opportunities Fair you will gain a close view of the ingenuity of our community’s research as well as the scholastic contributions that our School has made to the field of public health. You will also learn about ways you can become involved in research and related educational enhancement opportunities.

Contribution of environmental chemicals in neurological disease Project Description: We are routinely exposed to a variety of chemicals in our environment. Many of these chemicals easily enter the brain and can affect the normal development and function of the nervous system and contribute to neurological disorders, such as Parkinson disease, Alzheimer disease, Autism, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Our research seeks to identify specific chemicals that contribute to the risk of these disorders and the cellular mechanisms that underlie the damage. Principal Investigator(s): W. RESEARCH UNIT ON BACTERIAL RESPIRATORY PATHOGENS: Global molecular epidemiology, antibiotic resistance and mechanisms of persistence and disease Program Description: Global-important human bacterial respiratory pathogens, such as S. pneumoniae or H. influenzae are often commensal of the nasopharynx. However, these bacteria produce diseases and kill more children than any other infectious disease. Our research unit is developing new molecular methods of detection and using them to evaluate the global epidemiology of these pathogens in both healthy children and children with respiratory diseases. Our studies also investigate antibiotic resistance, virulence and mechanism of persistence in the human nasopharynx. Project/Program Coordinator: Dr. Jorge E. Infectious Disease and Environmental Change in China and Ecuador Project Description: The Remais research group conducts analytical and computational research on the interaction between infectious agents and environmental phenomena, with a focus on intervention and surveillance. Several research assistant positions are available in the group that will contribute to our overall goals of combining environmental and theoretical models with field data to study the environmental biology and epidemiology of infectious diseases. The focus will be on the dynamics and environmental determinants of waterborne and vector-borne pathogens, and the research assistants will collaborate closely with climate modelers, epidemiologists and earth scientists to quantitatively examine the role of environmental phenomena in shaping the dynamics and distribution of infectious diseases. Project/Program Coordinator: Prof. Justin Remais Name of representative attending the Fair: Philip Collender [email protected] Website: http://www.sph.emory.edu/eh/remais/

POSITIONS/OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE: Practical Experience Award paid position, other paid position, Scholars in Action Assistantship, unpaid/volunteer position The students will work to develop new computational approaches for understanding the interaction between environmental change, surface water quantity and quality, and waterborne disease risk while accounting for complex relationships between meteorological phenomena and pathogen growth, survival and transport. The students will also contribute to the PI's research agenda in the area of infectious disease surveillance, with a strong emphasis on spatial analysis and environmental determinants; some time may be dedicated to other projects managed by Dr. Remais, including climate and health, environmental detection, molecular dispersal markers and simulation projects. Some key projects for this position include developing code to support the spatial modeling of waterborne disease risk in the context of environmental change; georeferencing complex disease surveillance and environmental data; landcover classification and spatial analysis; researching and writing information briefings on specific mechanisms by which climate change modifies waterborne and vector-borne disease transmission; managing and reorganizing georeferenced climate data sets and other data. Some literature digitization and archiving may be required. The student will occasionally perform administrative tasks such as photocopying, locating and retrieving library resources and some data entry and summarization. Hours are flexible, and may range from 10-20 hours per week.
