RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT AND THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
Dr Nor Edzan Che NasirChief LibrarianUniversity of Malaya Library
December 2016
AbstractResearch, regardless of its size, brings with it research data. More often than not, a researcher collects more data than he/she requires. Within the last six years, research data is viewed as important data and questions have been raised as to what happens to research data once the research is completed and the findings have been published?. Research funding agencies are now seeing a need for the preservation and curation of research data and they are recognising the need for research data management (RDM). Many view libraries, especially university libraries as the most appropriate agency to manage research data. Therefore, this presentation will define research data and introduce the various types of research data highlighting the best practices of selected university libraries worldwide. Subsequently, the role played by the University of Malaya Library in managing research data will be highlighted.KEYWORDS: Research data; Research data management; University libraries, University of Malaya Library

Defining Research DataVarious definitions via InternetOffice of Mgmt and Budget of the White House, US Circular 110 – “recorded factual material commonly accepted in the scientific community as necessary to validate research findings”.Queensland University of Technology – “data in the form of facts, observations, images, computer programs results, recordings, measurements or experiences on which an argument, theory, test or hypothesis, or another research output is based”.

What is not Research DataTrade secrets, commercial information, materials necessary to be held confidential by a researcher until they are published, or similar information which is protected under law; andPersonnel and medical information and similar information the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy, such as information that could be used to identify a particular person in a research study.

UM LibraryOnly manage research data that has been published or presentedDoes not manage all research data – datasets, models, diagrams, conference posters etcSuggested in 2012 to take up research data management but not taken upSuggested by our DVC (R & I) in 2014
UM LibraryRDM discussed and UM is currently:
Developing a policy for RDM Deciding on central storage of all research dataLooking into security and backup procedures for research data
2016 – UM Library – to keep research data in or Research Repository Take note: The Library is pivotal in RDM
University of California, Santa Cruz
What You Need To DoFamiliarise librarians with RDM
Conduct RDM workshops or coursesSelf taught through open courseware
Develop a Policy on Management of Research Data
Define research dataIdentify and state who are responsible
Central storage, security and back-up of dataManage data properly Respect and abide ethical and privacy concerns
Course on RDMJISC funded RDMRose project (2012-2013)Collaboration - libraries of University of Leeds, Sheffield and York + Information School at Sheffield = Open Educational Resource for information professionals on RDMMaterials - for reuse by other educators and designed for self-supported CPDModule = 8 sessions = each equals to half day of study. Each session = 4 parts = notes + slides

ConclusionRDM discussed in USA, Europe, Australia – last 3 yearsRDM is now emerging in Asia especially SEALibraries – keeping published dataLibrarians – need to look into unpublished / unused dataEstablish a policy and proceed from thereNot a solo engagement but must involve other parties collectively
