COLLEGEGUIDE
Reprinted from Pittsburgh Magazine, September 2018
As high school students move
through the college search process, it is best for them to relax, be honest and most importantly, be themselves. Once a high school student starts identifying which colleges spark their interest, they should start thinking about scheduling a visit. When visiting a school make sure to tour the campus, talk to people and try the food. If you think you will be spending a lot of time in a particular building or area, be sure to check it out during your visit! If possible, meet with an admission counselor. Counselors are a valuable resource during the college search as they are the ones who can answer questions regarding the school and the admission process.”— ALLEGHENY COLLEGE
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SHOULD BEGIN THE PROCESS OF COLLEGE PREPARATION EARLY TO MAXIMIZE THEIR OPPORTUNITIES FOR GETTING INTO AND AFFORDING THEIR COLLEGE OF CHOICE. THIS MEANS REGISTERING FOR THE SAT OR ACT EARLY, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF EARLY APPLICATION DATES, AND EARNING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE BY APPLYING FOR THE MANY SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE OR THROUGH MICRO-SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED FOR THEIR ACTIVITIES IN HIGH SCHOOL. ALONG WITH GOOD GRADES, STUDENTS SHOULD TAKE ON LEADERSHIP ROLES AND BE ACTIVE IN A GOOD CHURCH TO DEVELOP TRAITS OF SELF-DISCIPLINE, SELFLESSNESS AND MATURITY. — GENEVA COLLEGE
Don’t underestimate
the value of a campus visit, speak with current college students for an inside look into their experience and finish a challenging senior year curriculum strong — sprint through the tape!”— SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY
Colleges are interested in your academic rigor — a challenging curriculum and strong grades. Highlight your curiosity
and willingness to challenge yourself when it comes to course selection. Take an active role in and out of the classroom and demonstrate a strong commitment to school and community activities that match your passions. Visit your high school guidance/college counseling office early and often — take advantage of any test preparation or scholarship resources they offer.”— WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON COLLEGE
VISIT THE CAMPUSES OF THE TOP SCHOOLS THEY ARE INTERESTED IN
ATTENDING. AT DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY, STUDENTS OFTEN SAY THAT ONCE THEY GOT TO CAMPUS, WHETHER FOR A TOUR OR AN OPEN HOUSE EVENT, THEY JUST KNEW IT WAS WHERE THEY WERE MEANT TO BE. A CAMPUS VISIT WILL GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MAKE THE BIG COLLEGE DECISION WITH CONFIDENCE.”— DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY
Start thinking
about your future — and potential college choices — early in your high school career. Take challenging courses and take them seriously. Work a part-time job or get involved in something outside of the classroom. It helps you build tangible skills like time management that will benefit you in college, but also can help you to become a more well-rounded individual. Colleges and universities want students who will succeed but also contribute to their campus community.”— CARLOW UNIVERSITY
“Plan ahead and have fun!
Don’t wait until your senior year of high school to plan for your college career. Start going to college fairs your sophomore year to see what is out there. Not only will this result in less stressful junior and senior years, it will get you excited and motivate you to do your best in high school.”— CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

PREPARING FOR COLLEGE ?

HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS SHOULD START RESEARCHING CAREER PATHS AND COLLEGE MAJORS AND VISITING CAMPUSES EARLY IN THEIR COLLEGE SEARCH PROCESS. DURING THEIR CAMPUS VISIT, STUDENTS SHOULD PLAN TO MEET WITH A FACULTY MEMBER AND INTERACT WITH CURRENT STUDENTS. STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO CONTINUE TO TAKE CHALLENGING CLASSES THROUGH THEIR SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL TO ENSURE THEY ARE PREPARED FOR THE RIGOROUS COLLEGE CURRICULUM. — WAYNESBURG UNIVERSITY
When preparing for college, the most important question to ask yourself is: What is best for you as a student? In other words, choose a school that aligns with your personality, interests and academic or career goals. The easiest way to narrow your college search is by ranking your priorities. Consider whether you prefer a small or large campus, a private or public school, an urban or suburban environment and how far you want to be from home. The best fit may be a school you never heard of, or it could be right in your hometown. Visit each college more than once to determine whether you can imagine yourself as a student on that campus. Also, all students should apply for financial aid. Some families don’t apply because they think they will not qualify. Students need to apply for financial aid by the deadline. Filing the application late may cause the student to lose out on aid that they might have otherwise received.”— LA ROCHE COLLEGE
THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE COLLEGE SEARCH PROCESS IS THAT IT STARTS JUNIOR YEAR, WHEREAS IT REALLY BEGINS WHEN YOU STEP INTO FRESHMAN YEAR. FROM THE COURSES YOU TAKE TO THE ACTIVITIES AND PASSIONS YOU PURSUE, YOU’RE CRAFTING YOUR NARRATIVE WELL BEFORE YOU SEND A COLLEGE YOUR TRANSCRIPT AND RESUME. WHILE TAKING A WELL-ROUNDED CURRICULUM IS IMPORTANT TO PREPARE FOR COLLEGE, BE SURE TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF IN KEY AREAS THAT MAY ALIGN WITH YOUR FUTURE MAJOR. DETERMINE WHAT FACTORS ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE BUT HAVE AN OPEN MIND AND VISIT DIFFERENT TYPES OF SCHOOLS TO FIND THE RIGHT “FIT.” DO YOUR RESEARCH. PREPARE A CHART FOR EACH COLLEGE AND TIMELINE OF APPLICATION, SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES SO YOU CAN SET REALISTIC GOALS AND DON’T MISS ANY OPPORTUNITIES. — GROVE CITY COLLEGE
Our admission staff encourages high school students to enroll
in college prep curriculum, take the ACT and/or the SAT, explore career interests through job shadow experiences, participate in community service and outreach, conduct comprehensive scholarship searches, visit college campuses to connect with admission counselors and current students, discuss college choices with high school guidance counselors and identify mentors and teachers who can write your letters of recommendation.”— URSULINE COLLEGE
The search for the right college is an exciting time for families. High
school juniors and seniors are visiting new places, meeting new people and taking part in a decision that could change the trajectory of their life. That can sound intimidating, but focusing on essentials can simplify the process. A visit to campus will give you a chance to see if the college and the setting are the right fits.”— THIEL COLLEGE
Do your research — online tools
make this easier than ever. Which institutions have my major, my sport, my activities, opportunities for research, interning or studying abroad? What is the actual cost after all financial aid is applied? What are the housing options for freshmen? What are the food plan options? How many students are there? What is the average class size? Can I apply for free? When do I have to make my final decision? Who advises freshmen? Then, narrow it down to a handful and plan a visit. You need to go and look around for yourself. You need to ask yourself, can I see myself here? Are the people friendly? Is the campus well-maintained? Is the campus safe and in a safe location?”— UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH AT BRADFORD
BY THEIR JUNIOR
YEAR, STUDENTS SHOULD ESTABLISH CRITERIA FOR THEIR SEARCH AND BEGIN RESEARCHING AND VISITING SCHOOLS, TAKING THE SAT AND/OR ACT, AND LOOKING AT ALL OF THE OPTIONS REGARDING FINANCIAL AID. DURING THE SENIOR YEAR, FILING THE FAFSA, SENDING HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPTS AND SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS ARE THE FINAL STEPS TO THAT ALL-IMPORTANT COLLEGE DECISION.”— SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

Students appreciate
Duquesne’s park-like campus that is just steps away from internships, recreation, concerts, sporting events and more. Freshmen matriculating in August 2018 reported that their primary reasons for attending Duquesne are program of study, urban location, size, distance from home, “the feeling I would fit in,” affordability and value and academic reputation.”— DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY

In 1815, the Reverend Timothy Alden and members of the Meadville community founded Allegheny College. Today, more than 200 years later, Allegheny is one of the nation’s oldest, most successful and distinguished private liberal arts institutions. It is a leader in higher education innovation, having been named in 2017 by U.S. News & World Report as one of the Top 6 Most Innovative Liberal Arts Colleges in the nation. In 2016, Allegheny was recognized as Number 1 in Undergraduate Research among four-year colleges by the National Council on Undergraduate Research.
At Allegheny, when members of the college community talk about unusual combinations, they mean it as a tremendous compliment — a compliment that recognizes the unique character of each student. When you look around, you’ll see a college president who studies decision-making by modern American presidents and then rolls up his sleeves for grassroots community service; an aspiring diplomat singing in the choir and building a bike path; a future physician who edits the college newspaper and pole vaults on an international stage. Unusual combinations, yes, but at Allegheny they are everyday examples of students exploring all of their talents and all of their passions.
Central to the college’s focus on experiential learning is the Allegheny Gateway, which helps students connect classroom learning with real-world experience. Since its introduction in 2015, the Gateway has received national attention. It is a central location for collaboration and study in which students can access resume and career services, pre-professional and graduate school advising, research funding and fellowships, internship opportunities and more.
The College’s Mission Statement is clear: Allegheny’s undergraduate residential education prepares young adults for successful, meaningful lives by promoting students’ intellectual, moral and social development and encouraging personal and civic responsibility.
All of this is happening on a beautiful 79-acre campus that includes historic architecture and cobblestone streets interspersed with new facilities such as the Vukovich Center for the Communication Arts, which is bristling with the latest technology. Located on a hill overlooking the City of Meadville, the campus is a short walk to downtown and all the amenities you’ll need to enjoy the Allegheny experience.
