PRESIDENT’S REPORT Season 2017-18 was again another big year for our PJCA. Probably the biggest change for us as an association was the introduction of the new Cricket Australia cricket formats and the subsequent adoption of the new Stage 1 formats for our U9 and U10 age groups. We also formally rolled out our formal heat policies. All that notwithstanding, the season progressed and all grades were contested and played in the good spirit for which our association is known.

Tonight and here in our Yearbook we acknowledge and reward those teams and individual successes that have been achieved this season and I extend my congratulations to all our award winners.

This season, the PJCA again witnessed growth in our player numbers, with 75 (Saturday) teams and 8 Thunder Girls Cricket League (TGCL) teams registering from U8-U16, across 10 junior clubs. This equated to just under 1,000 junior cricketers turning out each week for their club to play some form of junior cricket.

With the introduction oif the new formnat into the Under 10 program, we have had some very constructive feedback which we have passed onto Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia. There were some many positives and some challenges which we look forward to being addrssed in the coming years. Thank you all for your assistance. Further, the engagement in the Cricket Australia Milo In2Cricket and T20 Blast programs continues to be strong.

The PJCA have also continued to work hard to engage and attract more players through some game format modifications and the implementation of a PJCA Milo T20 Blast program during Term 1, 2017. This 4 hub model provided activations throughout the PJCA region including, Glenmore Park, St Clair, Glenbrook and Springwood, with each junior club linked to one of the hubs, providing clubs with new player signings. I would like to thank all the club volunteers that supported each hub and especially Jake Balnave, our Cricket NSW Development Manager for his support and work with our Association on this and other initiatives to grow the game in Penrith.

To my personal satisfaction, the PJCA continues to excel with its development of female cricket with our second year of our Thunder Girls Cricket League competition. This year we saw 8 teams participate and welocmed a team from the north as we were joined by Hawkesbury. Friday evenings at Jamison Park continues to be the place to be for Girl Club Cricket. This has proved a very useful introduction for the girls, many of whom are now competing in higher forms of the game. To the many volunteers that assisted, my deepest thanks.

I would like to personally thank the work of our PJCA Vice President and Comp Sec, Alex Fenn for his astute and effective match administration. Your drive and support this year to me has been nothing short of fantastic. Thank you also to our Umpires Coordinator, Andrew Kennedy for his appointment and organisation of umpires to our games throughout the season.

Page 8

Again, the PJCA remains financially stable, thanks to the efforts of our Treasurer, John Jennings. Thank you also to all our valued PJCA sponsors for their financial support. Many thanks to our PJCA Secretary, Megan White for all her administrative work that keeps the association ticking along.

I would also like to thank the entire Representative Committee run by Brendan Bayliss. A very successful team of dedicated volunteers without whom our elite level players would not be able to represent Penrith.

On a personal note, being a reluctant President this year due to a number of other commitments, I could not have seen this year out without the additional help of both Grant Kean and Craig Batty. Thank you both for your support and counsel through the year.

We acknowledge the relationships built with our affiliates, the NDCA and Penrith Cricket Club and thank them for their support of junior cricket in Penrith. Thank you also to Penrith City Council for their work in preparing grounds each week as well as support off the field to support our wonderful game.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of our association, I acknowledge every single Club coach, manager, scorer, every Club President, Secretary and committee member and thank them for their time, their effort and their input to ensuring the great game of cricket is accessible to all in our district. Our PJCA Volunteer of the Year Award will again acknowledge the special contribution made by one of our hardest working volunteers.

Congratulations once again to our team and individual winners on your performances and success this season. Enjoy the accolades and keep loving the game we all love!

David Williams

President

REPRESENTATIVE COORDINATOR’S REPORT Season 2017/18 saw the PJCA representative program continuing to expand by the introduction of an U15’s Margaret Peden (Girls) team. We now have 192 players and 16 teams in all junior representative competitions, with the exception of the U/10 Foster Shield. We are one of the only associations fielding teams in all competitions for 2018/19, which is a testament to the strength of our association, and the coaches, managers, club junior secretaries and committees that work so hard. On that note, I would like to send a special thank you to all PJCA Representative Coaches and Managers for the commitment and dedication that you have shown to your players and teams this season, without this we would not exist.

The Representative Committee of Geoff Sullivan (selections coordinator), Donna Reardon (Sponsorship coordinator), Christine Sultana (Sponsorship Coordinator), Dave Williams (Girls Coordinator), Mick Wilson (Grounds and Equipment Coordinator) have been working hard behind the scenes. In the sponsorship space, can I also thank our PJCA Vice President Alex Fenn for his assistance in bringing on board Penrith Lock Up. This now means the PJCA can store all equipment in our own storage facility. Also for Donna Reardon for securing the sponsorship of Outback Steakhouse who will be running our annual BBQ at the Photo’s in October each year. Mick Wilson, for organising with the NDCA for Jamison Oval 5 to be used, when Rance Oval and Bill Ball Oval were not available for our U15 and 16 competitions.

Moving forward to Season 2018/19, the hard work of the open trials has now been completed. A special thanks to Geoff Sullivan who spends countless hours behind the computer and on the phone organising our squads. It was a massive effort this year Sully, thanks again. Dave Williams, for the organisation you put into the Girls, this is something that you have built up from nothing over the last few years, and the results of your labour are now coming to fruition. Andrew Kennedy, thank you for your communications throughout the season regarding umpire appointments. It was a challenge this season with the DCA draw being released so late.

Finally I would just like to thank all the parents, players, coaches and managers of all the teams for the past 2 seasons. I have enjoyed my time as the PJCA Rep Coordinator, but I have decided to step down and will be handing over the baton to Rick Lennox. I have enjoyed leading this program, and whilst doing so have been able to network with other Coordinators from other associations over a range of issues,

Page 9

and without a doubt we run one of the best, well organised programs. I will now look forward to taking a back seat and watching the PJCA Rep Program continue to grow under Rick’s leadership in the coming season and beyond.

Brendan Bayliss

Representative Coordinator

GIRLS DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR’S REPORT At PJCA this season, we have taken our female cricket options and development to a new level again with the growth of our Club-based Thunder Girls Cricket League to 8 teams and the growth of our Representative Program to two teams with the addition of an U15 side. Female participation continues to go from strength to strength and presents us with new ways of partnering with other associations to help grow our great game into this demographic. On that note, this year we welcomed participation from our friend at Hawkesbury with the introduction of a girls team from that area.

Specifically on the TGCL front, we this year welcomed Glenmore Park into the fold. It is incredibly satisfying seeing the growth of this competition and the look on the girls faces as they compete and succeed at this great game. This competition continues to provide an avenue for girl participation and brings a number of girls to the game that frankly would not play in a mixed or predominantly boy competition. Again, in this regard, the PJCA is leading the way and is considered somewhat of a poster child by Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia for the promotion and development of female cricket.

I would like to formally thank all of the volunteers, coaches, scorers, managers and all other involved in this endeavour. Your contribution is very much appreciated.

With regards to the actual two competitions, we congratulate our premiers:

• Springwood CC for winning the Spring competition • Hawkesbury for winning the Summer competition

In addition, we were able to grow to two representative sides (U13 and U15) representing Penrith Female Cricket in the respective DCA competitions. Both teams had somewhat development squads this year and performed well above their expected levels and I look forward to seeing the results next year as these sides mature into their grades. Well done girls.

As in past years, absolutely none of the above opportunities for junior girls would be possible without the support of the PJCA Management Committee and the PJCA Reps Committee. Thank you to all involved, particularly the PJCA Development Coordinator Brendan Bayliss, and Joanne Agius, Michelle Pollard, Donna Reardon and Christine Sultana who coordinate our sponsors and keep us all looking spic and span!

A massive thank you also to all the club based volunteers that assisted throughout the TGCL seasons, be it as team managers, scorers, game organisers, BBQ helpers and anything else that needed to be done ... your work and support was awesome!

Girls cricket is on the up with the support of all of you. THANK YOU!!

NSWDCA

The present NSWDCA was formed on 11 August 1903 as the "New South Wales Combined Cricket Associations' Union". The term "Junior" was added after "Combined" on 11 October 1907 and on 8 July 1909 the name was changed to the "New South Wales Junior Cricket Union". This name was retained until 3 October 1997 when the name was changed to "New South Wales Districts Cricket Association".

The original affliated Associations in 1903 were: Balmain, Centennial Park, Dubbo, NSW Wednesday Half Holiday, Northern Suburbs, Moore Park, St George, and Western Suburbs.

J H CREAK SHIELD (UNDER 11) The trophy for the Under 11 competition was presented in 1989 by the NSWJCU, in memory of the late Jack Creak, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer (1958-80) and Life Member.

Penrith has won the shield only once, in 1994/95.

2017-18

The U/11 DCA team would enter the top level competition for the first time in 2017 with many players playing representative cricket for the first time. With the challenge ahead the boys bonded together

Page 14

Page 15: REPRESENTATIVE SEASON YEARBOOK Rep Season Yearbook 2017-… · Anthony Neale Cup (Under 14) ... Glenbrook and Springwood, with each junior club linked to one of the hubs, providing

quickly at training and trial matches and were playing with great enthusiasm. We entered the normal rounds after three strong trial matches with positive performances across the board and a couple of key lessons that would hold them in good stead for the season ahead.

In review, the main competition proved to be a mixed bag of results and performances with some really outstanding cricket but at times we let ourselves down with not taking our chances at critical times. Throughout different games we batted, bowled or fielded well but probably just didn’t execute all these three things in the same games enough times.

The real positives were definitely every player improved their skills and gained a better understanding of representative cricket and the challenges it presents. Key fundamentals of line and length bowling, running between the wickets, working the field for singles, fielding positions and even reading the game developed across the board.

Overall we finished the season with a win, tie and three close loses, but achieved our goal of being competitive and challenging our opposition to the end. This was certainly highlighted in our final game after posting a meagre 85, the opposition were 4-72 with 13 overs to go at the last drinks. Coached asked the boys to fight until the end as cricket is a funny game and that they did coming out full of energy and pressured the other team into a couple of crazy runouts until the scores where all tied with 3 wickets remaining. With three consecutive balls we cleaned bowled the 3 last batsmen to tie the match and get what we felt was another victory, definitely a memorable moment for the boys.

A big shout out to the boys for the energy, enthusiasm and willingness to learn throughout the season. With continued hard work and dedication the signs are there for some good results in the future. Finally, thanks to Rebecca and Damon for all their hard work on and off the field plus the parents for their support and efforts.

ARCH CAWSEY SHIELD (UNDER 12) This shield was named in honour of Mr. Archibald John Cawsey (1899 to 1957), President of South Sydney C.A. The South Sydney C.A. presented the Shield to the NSWJCU for Annual Inter-Association Competition for Under 12 years.

Penrith has won the shield on three occasions:

• 1984/85 • 1992/93 • 1995/96

2017-18

In the pre-season trials our boys performed very well against some formable opposition and left us feeling very optimistic of our chances in the competition proper.

Unfortunately, we lost our Captain and opening bowler (Blake Hodges) for the season due to a stress fracture of the lower back before a ball was even bowled. To make matters worse our Opening batsmen (Ethan Haldane) was to miss the first two rounds also due to injury. This put us a on the back foot from the start and it called for a reshuffle with both bat and ball.

In the first game against Inner West Harbour we started with a bang, but we were unable to keep the effort through the 50 overs and allowed them to score 160 runs. This score would prove to be beyond us. This result was a clear indication of where we needed to improve as team with some very poor catching

Page 17

and fielding displayed throughout the match, but we did also take away some positives from the performance.

We lost our next three games, but our team was on the improve and we could feel the momentum building. In the final round we were up against the undefeated

St George and with our record being 0 from 4 St George would have been forgiven for believing it was in the bag. How very wrong they were to be with the Panthers winning convincingly producing an all-round performance that would have seen them beating any team that day. With our end of season record of 1 from 5 not looking all that flash we knew our team was in great form full of confidence and on the verge of something special leading into the Lismore Carnival.

What a week of cricket our boys produced winning all four of our group games to make the major semi and to put themselves in a position to be just one win away of making the final.

We came up against a very strong Hunter Valley team who were also undefeated and in a very close game that went down to the last over, Hunter Valley were victorious proving to be the better team on the day.

The game was played in great spirit and sportsmanship with the boys from both teams forming a special bond and friendship in a way I have never seen two teams do before. After the match all the players from both teams gathered in the middle of pitch for at least an hour discussing the week of cricket they just played and no doubt a lot of other things we as parents were not privy to.

Overall, after a slow start to the season we finished very strong and working as a team we produced a level of cricket to be a genuine contender next year.

Aaron Barlow (Captain): Adz was named Captain after the withdrawal of Blake Hodges and performed his task with great authority and distinction quickly gaining the respect of his players. Aaron by his own standards didn’t bowl to his best but is a quality fast bowler who made a significant contribution overall.

Leo Astill: Boony is an explosive batsman that played some critical innings this year at times we were in trouble. At the Lismore carnival Leo was sent up the order to open the batting giving us some great starts. Leo picked up the man of the match award against Far North Coast with a score of 30 retired not out of not many balls.

Ethan Haldane: Ethan had a very slow start to the season due to injury and some back luck. Ethan gained momentum through the season establishing himself as a very formidable number 3 batsman. He also performed very well as an off-spin bowler, a skill he was forced to develop due to our lack of spin bowler options. Ethan was also named captain for the Lismore carnival and did an exceptional job leading by example by putting the team first and making some critical decisions under pressure. Ethan scored 26 in the major semi and was part of a good partnership with Harry after losing our opener early. The innings was significant given the difficult conditions.

James Lennox: Jimmy had a very good season finding his place in the team as an opening batsman. James was the leading runs scorer this year playing some very important innings for the team. His ability to bat for long periods was as standout allowing the rest of the team to bat around him. James continued his form into the Lismore carnival with three, man of the match awards. He scored 224 runs in Lismore, the 3rd highest runs total for the carnival. He also finished just 2.4 points away from the man of series.

Harry Mcully: Harry was a graduate from last year’s Presidents Cup and from the get go this year Harry showed his potential performing very well in the trials. He scored a very well made 68 against St George and we knew straight away this guy has a lot of natural talent. Harry batted on most occasions at number 4 and put together some solid innings. He also bowled on a regular basis and gradually improved through the season. Harry also played an important role in the major semi at the Lismore carnival scoring 40 in very difficult conditions that was equal top score for both teams. Well done.

Mahad Ezad: Mahad on occasions opened the bowling but mainly bowled 1st change and proved with his lethal swing very difficult to score off. Although Mahad did not take a lot of wickets this year he can consider himself very unlucky as he was let down in the field on numerous occasions by a lot of dropped catches. Overall, and after all things considered, I rated Mahad as our best bowler this year.

Page 18

Page 19: REPRESENTATIVE SEASON YEARBOOK Rep Season Yearbook 2017-… · Anthony Neale Cup (Under 14) ... Glenbrook and Springwood, with each junior club linked to one of the hubs, providing

Liam Knight: Houdini played a critical role this year batting at 6 or 7 most weeks and on more than one occasion came into bat under extreme pressure. Liam has a very cool head and his ability to steady the ship is his specialty and was called upon to do this on many occasions this year.

Liam Darlington: Darlo this year by his own standards did not perform to what we know he is capable of. Liam opened the batting on most occasions and looked very good at times but just could not get going. Against Manly, he showed his ability after being sent into bat for the second time after being forced to follow on. Liam and his opening partner batted for close to 2 hours to save the team from an embarrassing outright loss.

Playing St George, he sustained an injury while keeping and there was some doubt to whether he would be able to bat. To his credit he came into bat at number 6, at a time we were a little vulnerable, and steered us to victory by hitting the winning runs.

Harveer Dhaliwal: Harveer is another that by his own standards performed below his best this year. Harveer has huge potential as fast bowler and although did not take many wickets but he was always very difficult to score off. He genuinely put fear into opposition batsman with his sheer pace and bounce. At the Lismore carnival Harveer turned his form around taking 9 wickets finishing equal 3rd highest wicket taker for the series. He had plenty of batsman jumping around with his pace and batted some seriously good innings as well.

Harkareet Singh Dhaliwal: Harki graduated from Presidents Cup this year and like his brother is showing great potential. Harkis’ performances were good and improved as the season progressed. Harki as many others performed very well in Lismore taking a number wickets and batting at a high standard. Expecting great things from Harki next season.

Cooper Connelly: Coops performed very well this year after graduation from Presidents Cup. It took a little while to adjust to the step up in class, but he was given minimal opportunity to show what he can do. When called upon Coops did the job being that of bowling or batting. Against Manly, Coops innings prevented us from scoring an embarrassing total.

Against St George he opened the blowing and looked very much at home with the new ball bowling very good lines and did not allow the opposition batsman to score many from his opening spell. Coops took his form into Lismore where his all-round game was exceptional. Coop needs to believe more in himself and of his natural talent. We know he will develop into an exceptional good all-rounder.

Mathew Bayley: Another graduate from Presidents Cup that was given limited opportunity but performed well when called upon. Matty is a work in progress but potentially a very good all-round cricketer. Like many of his team mates, it took time this year to perform at a DCA level. At the Lismore carnival Matty showed he can compete at a high level with some great performances. Well done.

Mitchell Shanahan and Cooper Mclean: Thank you both very much for filling in for us at Lismore Carnival. You were both very much part of our success and you both performed at a very high level. Also thank you to your parents for making the trip and supporting us. It’s a big commitment to travel to a carnival and we really appreciated it.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jesse ASTILL assistant trainer, Rick Lennox Manager and all the parents for your support and hard work during the season. Your wiliness to help and support me and the team is very much appreciated whether its umpiring, scoring, supplying lunches, providing support at training or other duties. Everything I requested was done with very little fuss or trouble. You truly are an amazing group of people. Thank you.

WALTER S GEE SHIELD (UNDER 13) This shield was presented to the NSWJCU for perpetual competition for players Under 13 years by the members of family of the Late Walter Gee in his memory, President of the NSWJCU from 1939 to 1962.

Penrith has won the shield only once, in 1994/95.

2017-18

Well another season is over and we have seen some good cricket played. We still haven’t reached our potential but the signs are good moving forward. Every player has at some time put their hand up to contribute and this is the making of a good side. Watching these boys through the high and low moments together and bouncing back is what is enjoyable to watch.

Round 1 vs Newcastle

We welcomed Newcastle to sunny Penrith. Newcastle is a side we hadn’t played before. Our captain Reegan Wilson won the toss and chose to bat. We welcomed Edson Whattam to the crease for the first time and he started to show his worth.

We unfortunately lost wickets early and continued to do so during the innings. Edson Whattam batted well getting to 44 and Brock Campbell 20, were the main run scorers to see us get to 9/117 off our 50 overs.

We knew that if we bowled well enough we could win.

Page 21

Page 22: REPRESENTATIVE SEASON YEARBOOK Rep Season Yearbook 2017-… · Anthony Neale Cup (Under 14) ... Glenbrook and Springwood, with each junior club linked to one of the hubs, providing

Newcastle started well and wouldn’t give there wickets away easily. Our opening bowlers Akshat Mishra and Riley Brandl bowled well but couldn’t break through. We finally got a couple of wickets with Bailey Bedford and Reegan Wilson and we slowly started to work through the middle order. But Newcastle were up for the fight. The game continued to wrestle with Brock Campbell, Kade Zammit and Shan Subramanian taking wickets. In the end Newcastle fought well and got the runs with 3 balls to spare.

Round 2 vs Central Coast

We travelled up the coast to Rogers Park No.2.

Reegan Wilson won the toss again and we chose to bat. The wicket was a little damp from irrigation the night before. Unfortunately it didn’t help Retish Sethi who got a ball that skidded on to get him LBW early. Edson Whattam and Cody Robinson put a little partnership together to steady the ship. We lost Edson Whattam (20) which brought Akshat Mishra to the crease. What an innings this was to proceed. Akshat Mishra ended up on 114 hitting 13 fours and 1 six. His first rep hundred. He played with maturity, time and patience. Cody Robinson finished with 36 and the other batters did the job to bat around Akshat Mishra getting us to a total of 9/212.

With one half of the job done, it was to our bowling now.

We started a little slow in the field just searching for the breakthrough. Riley Brandl finally found that for us and we just started rolling from there. We ended up dismissing Central Coast for 92. Riley Brandl 1/10, Shan Subramanian getting 1/6, Kade Zammit 3/24, Akshat Mishra 3/1 and Reegan Wilson 2/10.

The day definitely belonged to Akshat Mishra with his 114 and 3/1 off 4. Great effort mate.

Round 3 vs Manly Warringah

Match washed out.

Round 4 vs Inner West Harbour

This was a must win match for us if we wanted to play finals cricket. Inner West Harbour won the toss and elected to bat. Jamison Park no.3 grass was at its longest. The ground was running very slowly and plenty of singles was the key. Our bowling was a little off today bowling two sides of the wicket. Luckily for our fielding keeping us in the game. We affected 3 run outs and Bryce Fenn took a cracking catch which helped. Riley Brandl 2/23, Brock Campbell 1/29 and Reegan Wilson 1/10 off 10 overs was tidy with the ball and the pick of our bowlers. Inner West Harbour fought well to get to 7/132 off 50 overs.

Our innings didn’t start off too well losing a couple of early wickets and our ability to turn the strike over wasn’t happening. Inner West were bowling well. When Akshat Mishra and Kade Zammit were at the crease we had a heart beat. It was the partnership we needed until we lost Akshat (14). Kade (40) was batting well and formed another partnership with Brock (28). We then lost Kade Zammit and Brock Campbell in quick succession needing a run a ball with a couple of wickets in hand. Kaelan Penney and Bryce Fenn put a partnership on but it was too tall of an order and they got us to all out 122. The fight these two boys showed us at the end was fantastic.

Round 5 vs Northern Districts

Reegan won the toss and sent ND’s into bat. Needing to win this game outright to hold onto any slim chance of getting into the finals. The boys went out and gave it their all. They bowled and fielded the house down. ND’s were being defiant though and wouldn’t give in. They made us work hard to get them all out for 81. Kade Zammit 4/17, Riley Brandl 1/8, Reegan Wilson 1/19 and Kaelan Penney 1/3.

The boys knew of the task in front of them. We needed quick runs. We were able to eclipse the runs in 23 overs with some great hitting from Edson Whattam getting 34 not out and Cody Robinson 15 not out and 22 sundries. This allowed us to put ND’s back in for a crack at outright. It was a big ask but something the boys wanted to try. And try they did. They eventually finished the day having ND’s 8/70. Kade Zammit 5/37 and Reegan Wilson 2/19. Edson Whattam took 3 of the most amazing catches I have seen in the field. Edson Whattam is normally our keeper and came out for a break.

Well done to Kade Zammit for taking match figures of 9/54

We didn’t quite get the result we wanted but it was a valiant effort and great to see the boys start to believe in their abilities. The boys have definitely come a long way from the start of the season. I look forward to watching them develop and getting the best out of their potential.

I would like to thank all the parents, families and friends for their time and efforts at training, game days, behind the scenes, scoring, lunches and everything else that is involved in getting our boys on the park. Thanks to Alex Fenn for lugging the marquee around so our kids have plenty of shade.

Also a big thanks to the PJCA for their efforts in getting these boys on the park and looking great. Your time and efforts are appreciated.

Thank you to my family for letting me coach these young men.

A huge thank you to my manager Mick Wilson and his wife Auriole for all your help. The job you guys do is amazing and I am forever grateful.

Well done lads.

HAROLD MOORE SHIELD (UNDER 14) In September 1957, because of rising numbers, the NSWJCU decided to conduct an Under 14 competition for the “Juvenile Shield”. Three months later, the St George C.A. donated a trophy for the same purpose named after Harold George Moore, President of their Boy’s Competition at the time.

Penrith has won the shield on four occasions:

• 1989/90 • 1994/95 • 2000/01 • 2007/08

2017-18

Firstly I would like to thank Brendan Bayliss and the PJCA committee for giving me the opportunity to coach this side. I was unsure of what to expect having not been involved with the age group previously but I knew there was plenty of talent.

After our 3 trial games I was quietly confident we could do well in the competition, having scored over 200 in each game whilst retiring batters constantly. Our bowlers also showed promise with a huge list at hand. The boys were keen from the start and showed a real willingness to learn although it took a bit longer for some to settle in and need to remember when to switch on. As a coach I had a real emphasis on fielding and the boys responded well at training.

Page 25

Unfortunately we lost one of our strike bowlers after the trials. With Will Sherwood being my first choice as opening bowler I was happy to give him all the time needed to return. Unfortunately Will would not play a game and we wish him all the best for his future cricket.

Round 1 vs Canterbury West at Marrickville

Liam Bayliss travelled to help out but unfortunately didn't get to bat or bowl, however he did field superbly with lots of energy.

Winning the toss we chose to bat and were cruising at 1-110 after 30 but losing the two batters that were scoring well in quick succession really put the brakes on. CW bowled very tight and our middle order struggled to get the score moving. We ended up being restricted to 7-165 from 50 overs. We started well getting an early wicket but dropped an early catch which the they made us pay for with a partnership of 91. The heavens opened up and play was delayed with CW just in front on run rate. The boys tried their hardest right till the end but CW were able to just throw the bat at everything and past our score 3 down in the 35th over. CW would go on to finish undefeated at the top of our pool!

Round 2 vs Central Coast at home

With Will still unavailable we welcomed Kade Camwell as his replacement and I was impressed with his effort.

Two from two with the toss and of course we batted first. Our opening pair found it hard scoring but both made half tons and gave us a good platform. Due to the circumstances and plenty of wickets in the shed we had to shuffle the order which gave our middle order some freedom to go hard. With a couple of good partnerships we posted a very defendable 8/208. We hit the ground with a lot of enthusiasm and kept the talk up for a lot longer than usual but CC made us work hard for the first wicket with the score on 58. Unfortunately it was not the opener we wanted. The game was anyone's with runs flowing and the occasional wicket. Our field settings were a bit off for the middle part and CC got some momentum making it a closer finish than it should have been, ending with 7/195 off their 50.

Round 3 vs Illawarra at home

The weather struck again the night before and after a lengthy wait we agreed to abandon the match.

Round 4 vs Fairfield/Liverpool at Liverpool

I decided not to bring up a player from PC for the remainder of the comp so not to disrupt their preparation. This gave Sam Capararo an opportunity as one of the shadow players. I was very grateful that Sam agreed to the possibility of just fielding. However he did get to roll the arm for a couple of overs and did well.

Losing the toss and having to bowl didn't phase the boys and they were on fire in the field, the bowling was on song with all bowlers having good figures. We bowled them out for 113 taking the last wicket in the 50th over. Knowing how hard small totals can be the instructions were simple,It doesn't matter if it takes 50 overs to reach the total as long as we don't lose too many wickets. We only lost 4 wickets in the chase and reached the total in the 40th. A very good display from all the boys!!!

This game would be the decider as to which one one of us progressed thru to the qualifying final. ND's won the toss and to our surprise sent us in to bat. Chasing down their 234 in our trial game was probably in their head. Our openers Hamish and Jamie looked comfortable but like in the first round were both run out when they were just getting going. Some big hitting from Aiden and Max got us moving along and with some good cameos from Oscar, Aaron and Callan we reached our goal of 200.

Once again the boys hit the field with heaps of energy. The bowling was good as we knocked both openers over early. NDs settled and our boys toiled without luck for a while. While one of NDs batters looked solid the rest didn't put up much of a fight. Whilst Max dominated, the rest of the boys did an impressive job to contain their runs along with great fielding taking 6 catches and rolling them for 152 in the 49th over. Qualifying final here we come.

Qualifying final vs Nth Shore at St Ives

The toss is always crucial in big games and unfortunately we lost and were asked to field first. Nth Shore finished at the top of their pool undefeated so we knew it would be a tough game! It just seemed that it wasn't going to be our day as our bowling wasn't as tight as it had been in the lead up. Luck was also on NS side as balls either landed short or just over our fielders. We also gave them some short leg side bowling which they punished. The boys never gave up or dropped their heads and for that I was extremely proud. We managed to slow the flow for parts of the innings by taking the pace off the ball. Eli, Aaron and Jamie each bowled well, but we let it slip toward the end. NS posted a score of 200 which I felt we could chase on this goat track.

We lost Hemish early which brought Aiden to join Jamie. Both boys got themselves in but struggled with the spin and were stumped trying to get out to him. Max came to the crease with confidence but couldn't get any partnerships going. The wickets kept falling around him and we fell 50 short in the 44th over. Although it wasn't our day I was very pleased with the way the team carried themselves on and off the field. The boys and their parents can be very proud of what they have achieved this season and go one step closer next time. Just keep working hard on your individual game and bring it together as a team.

Finally I wish to thank the parents for making me welcome and supporting my decisions. A happy team needs a happy environment and you as parents showed great commitment and passion for your child's sport. Special thanks to Jill, Trudy and Christine for taking care of the managers role, it made my job a lot easier knowing everything off the field was in control. Thanks also to those parents who scored and did square leg duties it was greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Craig for taking care of the boys when I was unavailable and to the carnival.

I look forward to watching you all grow as cricketers and wish you luck for the future!!!

E G WEBLIN SHIELD (UNDER 15) This shield was presented to the NSWJCU for perpetual competition for players Under 15 years by the Shell Company of Australia Ltd, in memory of the late George Weblin O.A.M., President of the NSWJCU from 1962 to 1988.

Penrith has won the shield on three occasions:

• 1995/96 • 1998/99 • 2008/09

2017-18

From the side which made the grand final in the 2016/2017 season, we lost Ethan Muller, Brendan Daley and Amrinder Singh. They were replaced by Dylan Hodson, Nick Watson and Rahul Wakankar. The boys got off to a slow start to the season losing their first 2 games. They fought back well winning their next two games, leaving them needing to win their final game against Hornsby to move into the playoffs. The boys performed admirably, highlighted by a ton to Jordan Watson, and if not for a controversial call by the umpires to allow Hornsby to face the full complement of 50 overs even though they had only bowled 48 to us, Penrith would have won the game. A disappointing way to end the season. They showed a lot of character to fight back in the second half of the season, highlighted by a come from behind win against Sutherland at Bill Ball.

A big thank you to Dale Turner for taking time away from the family to coach. His knowledge and experience was invaluable for the boys.

C S WATSON SHIELD (UNDER 16) In 1948/49, the NSWJCU presented a shield for what was first known as the “Juvenile Competition”. The competition was named after Charles Samuel Watson, former Secretary NSWJCU and a former Secretary and Treasurer of the Manly Warringah C.A.

Penrith has won the shield on five occasions:

• 1992/93 • 1999/00 • 2003/04 • 2004/05 • 2009/10

2017-18

This rep season again brought much anticipation and excitement. More cricket on Sydney Grade grounds and the opportunity for the boys to test themselves against quality cricketers in the premier junior rep competition ensured the team was primed and ready to go. This was also to be the boys’ final season of junior rep cricket, adding to everyone’s desire to perform well.

Our pre season trial games exhibited good performances both individually and as a team. A balanced bowling attack and strengthened batting order showed positive early signs and ensured we were looking forward to the season. Below is a quick wrap of each game:

Penrith 10/150; Ramone Dallas 31, Jack Trezise 29.

These results, whilst we only managed a single victory, show just how much cricket is a game of ‘margins’. A margin of 2 wickets (Rd2) and a margin of 28 runs (Rd5) was all that stood between our team and some semi final rep cricket. Another case of ‘so close … yet so far’ for this great group of young cricketers.

Our season had some challenges. We lost our strike quick bowler, Elliot Heath after Rd 2 with a hand injury. We also faced two late pre season withdrawals. However, this provided Lochlan Watts and Ramone Dallas with DCA opportunities, which they seized with excitement and maturity. Lochlan performed well with bat and ball on many occasions. Ramone applied himself well throughout the season, top scoring in Rd 5.

I congratulate each and every player of the Watson Shield team for their efforts and input into this season’s campaign. It was another very enjoyable season working with such a great bunch of young men; their sportsmanship, demeanor and presentation, on and off the field was again ‘top shelf’ – parents you should be very proud!

I would like to thank Bridgette Gibson for her management expertise and organisation of our team. Thank you also to all the parents who supported us throughout. Your support and friendship is valued beyond the picket fence.

The Watson Shield competition marks the end of their junior rep careers and a number of players will be presented with PJCA Career Bats to acknowledge their continuous selection in PJCA rep teams from U11 through to U16. Well done to Mathew White, Ryan Gibson, Luke Gale, Ben Bradshaw, Elliot Heath, Jack Trezise, Lochlan Watts and Matthew Sullivan on achieving this accolade.

Watson Shield also serves as a transition towards bigger and better opportunities such as grade and senior competition cricket. All Watson Shield players this season have played grade or senior cricket. Congratulations also to the following players who represented in the Penrith Grade U16 Green Shield team; Matthew Sullivan (Capt.), Ryan Gibson, Elliot Heath, Ben Bradshaw and Jason Fakira.

It has been an absolute privilege to work with all the players in this age group over the past 7 seasons, to see them develop and grow from little 9 year old gems … into young adult cricketers and fine young men. To each of you, I wish you every success in your future cricket careers!

“The baggy green … continue the dream”

Geoff Sullivan, Coach

GIRLS NSWDCA

MOLLIE DIVE SHIELD (UNDER 13) Mary Clouston Dive OAM (1913 - 1997), better known as Mollie, was an Australian cricketer who played seven Test matches from 1948 to 1951. She was inducted into the Cricket NSW Hall of Fame in 2015. The Mollie Dive Shield was inaugurated in 1998/99, and a stand at North Sydney Oval is named in her honour.

Penrith has won the shield on two occasions:

• 2010/11 • 2013/14

2017-18

Our Mollie Dive girls had an awesome season in 2017-18, with many highlights, lots of learning, and many new friendships. Although we didn’t have a lot of victories, the scorebook is only one way to measure a team’s success. In the case of Penrith’s Mollie Dive team this year, the girls were very successful in building their skills and a great team culture, both of which will serve as a fantastic foundation for their future development as Penrith cricketers.

Our season kicked off against North Shore on 8 October 2017 at Jamison 6. It was a close contest, and we were very proud of our girls, many of whom were playing their first-ever representative game. North Shore (4/148) came away with the win, but our Penrith girls were far from outclassed (9/122). Individual batting highlights included Kate Pelle (40) and Hannah Knight (17), and Alyssa Callen (1/10), Chloe Kells (1/14) and Natasha Sinfield (1/32) were stars with the ball.

Our second game set us a tough assignment against Canterbury & Western Suburbs at Tempe. Despite going down to a more experienced side (CSW 6/207), our girls showed a lot of fighting spirit to finish 10/69. Well done to Hannah Knight (2/28) and Chloe Kells (2/31) with the ball, and Kate Pelle (19) with the bat.

The third game of the season, against Camden at Raby Sports Complex on 22 October, was a strong and exciting win for the girls. Sent in to bat, the girls lost a few early wickets before Jasmine Baldacchino (36*) and Kate Pelle (100*) steadied the innings and we finished 4/176. We’ll all remember Kate scoring her well-deserved century that day – truly a captain’s knock. In the second innings, we had Camden at 7/95 before thunder and lightning stopped play. Chloe Kells (3/14), Kate Pelle (1/5) and Hannah Knight (1/13) were the pick of the bowlers in an all-round show of fielding excellence from the girls.

Our game against Bankstown in the fourth round was possibly our hardest, but the girls showed their fighting spirit throughout. After being sent in to bat, the girls found themselves 6/25 in the 13th over, but the lower order stepped up and took the team all the way to 10/59 in the 28th over. Annabel Batty (10) deserves a particular mention for her efforts. Hannah Knight (1/8) slowed Bankstown down on their way to 2/62 and the win.

Unfortunately, our final game against Canberra at Mulgoa Rise on 5 November was rained out.

It has been a privilege and a pleasure to be involved with girls cricket at Penrith in 2017-18. The Mollie Dive girls this year always played their cricket in the right spirit and to the highest standard of sportswomanship, and they did Penrith proud. We’re sure that they’ll continue to grow as cricketers in years to come.

Behind every happy and successful cricket team is a bigger team of parents and supporters, and we had a team of champions in our parents this year – a very big thank you to them. We also thank the PJCA reps committee – without their hard work and dedication, we wouldn’t have a competition. Finally a huge vote of thanks to Dave Williams for all he does to advance the cause of girls cricket in Penrith and beyond.

PRESIDENT’S CUP

IDCA CUP (UNDER 10) UNDER 10 WHITE

After 6 competition rounds Penrith White finished the season with 3 wins and 2nd place on the competition ladder, a fair indication of the player’s ability and performances this season. Most pleasing were the contributions from all 13 members of the team this year, as we followed the PJCA batting and bowling rotation policy to ensure all players were provided an equal opportunity to develop their game. It was a real team effort, highlighted by the fact the team had 11 different wicket takers throughout the representative season.

Throughout the season our bowling was probably our strength, with us consistently limiting the scoring of opposition teams. Our opening bowling pair of Jesse Shandler and Mitchell Perry, were clearly the best opening combination in the competition and troubled the top order of all batting line ups. Our first change bowler in Chase Hayward would follow up their great work with some accurate line and length bowling, with Chase being the leading wicket taker for the competition. Other strong performers with the ball were William Zakostelsky with his leg spin, and Jedd Zammit with his fast medium accurate bowling.

Page 52

Page 53: REPRESENTATIVE SEASON YEARBOOK Rep Season Yearbook 2017-… · Anthony Neale Cup (Under 14) ... Glenbrook and Springwood, with each junior club linked to one of the hubs, providing

Unfortunately our batting was inconsistent, and we let slip a couple of games that were set up by our bowling unit. This was disappointing as the side showed they were very capable with the bat, we just required a couple of the top order to perform together in one game. Notable contributions with the bat came from William Zakostelsky who achieved the highest aggregate and individual score for the competition. His innings against Penrith Black in Rd 5 and against the Hurricanes in Rd 6 included some dynamic stroke play and running between the wickets, with the ability to take the quick single being most pleasing. Saarim Ghias, Chase Hayward, Mitchell Perry, Atilla Hassan and Zac Alexander also played some mature innings under pressure, which each player unselfishly batting for their team when required to do so. Riley Killen and Jesse Shandler each played a great innings in the final game of the season when the side was in trouble.

The most pleasing aspect of the team was that every player improved and developed their game throughout the season. Our positive running between the wickets probably won us our last two games of the season, with every player willing to take a risk and bat for the team and not themselves. This was an area of our game we developed throughout the season, and is a skill that is required in higher level cricket. Our fielding was also of a high standard, with the players enthusiasm and athletic ability supporting our bowlers and placing the opposition under pressure. Riley and William’s efforts behind the stumps also contributed to our performance in the field. As previously stated our bowling was probably our strength, with all players contributing and bowling each match.

Also a quick mention of the younger aged player’s in our side. Will White, Riley Killen, Zedd Zammit and Xander Murphy all showed they have some ability with the bat or ball and will benefit greatly from their exposure to higher level cricket this representative season.

I would like to thank Yash for managing the team, a time consuming role that is vital to the successful running of any side. The players, parents and myself all appreciate and thank you for your efforts this season.

Also thankyou to all the parents who scored, assisted with the lunches or setting up the gazebo. The players and I really appreciate all your help, assistance and support.

Finally a big thank you to the players. It was very rewarding to see each of you develop and enhance your games this season. Most pleasing was your willingness to listen and develop your cricket skills in a positive manner. Having to adapt to a shorter, or longer pitch, was probably the biggest challenge. However the 18m pitch length replicated the match conditions of higher level cricket, with shorter reaction times, and exposed the strengths and weaknesses of each player when at the crease. The player’s willingness to listen and implement advice, such as shorten your backswing of the bat, or use the pace on the ball was most rewarding.

There is a lot of ability and potential within this side and I look forward to witnessing the player’s development over the coming season. Hopefully I will see you playing cricket at Howell Oval in the not too distant future.

Luke Murphy, Coach

UNDER 10 BLACK

Working with this development team has been both an honour and privilege for us both. To our very loyal and supportive parent group thank you so much for helping make Sundays such a special day. From providing lunches, to scoring, to putting up Gazebos through to the positive support you provided to both your own boys and to each other our sincere appreciation. Each and everyone of you contributed in some way to what was a successful year.

To the PJCA our thanks for making this all possible. To Brendan, especially, thank you. Your effort with all the Rep teams is so much appreciated.

Penrith Black finished the competition strongly the same way we started the Presidents cup competition with a win over the eventual winners NWS Hurricanes, (who suffered just two losses during the season, both we might add to Penrith Black). Congratulations to the Hurricanes on a very consistent year.

As stated before this was a Development Team and keeping with that theme we would like to conclude this report with a quick pen picture of each player and one piece of advice to take into the winter season.

Austin Brandt. “Boonie” scored the second most runs for the team and backed it up with some fine medium pace bowling. A delightful young man who has such a positive outlook we expect to hear big things of his progress over the years. A fine fieldsman with good hands and a good throw. For “Boonie”, we suggest more focus/concentration on running between the wickets with clear, concise calling.

Xander Carstens. A wonderfully talented young cricketer who led the team with great maturity. Showed in the final game against NWS Hurricanes his true abilities, especially with the ball. An

Page 55

outstanding fielder with great anticipation and speed to the ball. Opening up his leg side shots by moving back and across should be his off season aim.

Jarrod Drake. Swings the ball a long, long way. Is developing good pace and practice with a new ball will help him develop his line. Took some fine catches and his hitting of the stumps from fielding returns was amazing. Is working hard on his batting with his coach and is coming along very nicely.

Isaiah Ghobrial. Played a couple of good innings, none better than his 17 against Penrith White under extreme pressure. His combination with Nathan in this game and again against the Hurricanes in the next match showed his abilities. Performed well with the ball when required and showed excellent hands in the field. Needs to work on his running and speed to the ball. Lots of short sprints.

Alexander Hovelmann. Shows enormous potential, especially with the bat. Hits the ball extremely hard and has the eye of a dead fish. Few will forget the pull shot he played against the Hurricanes to win the match. Moves well in the field and gets into good position. Lots of catching practice over the winter and when the opportunity arises some work on shot selection. Another who we expect to hear big things of in the future.

Nathan Jenkins. A player capable of pulling an attack apart. Worked hard at his batting and played two very important innings in the last two matches. Took a couple of real “speckies” in the field and showed improvement with some more than useful bowling. Shared the wicket keeping duties with Zach. Another player who would benefit from some speed work in the off season.

Alex Kerkham.” Jimmy” had an excellent representative season. Topped the bowling averages and generated some good pace. Also led the team in the field and his safe hands and speed to the ball and his rapid returns were a joy to watch. Lifted the entire team with his enthusiasm and energy. Showed glimpses of his undoubted ability with the bat. Will benefit by tightening his defence and better shot selection.

Jack Newman. “Smiley”, one of our youngsters, adapted very well to the higher demands of Rep Cricket. Bowled very well on every occasion and did so with a huge smile on his face. Smiley is one of those players that others genuinely enjoy playing with. Always positive and keen to improve he always gives his all in the field. Has ability with the bat and we expect him to develop nicely with another season of Under 10s in front of him. Working on defence, both forward and back is Smileys off season task.

Hayden Randall. Played just the two games filling in for Ben Reeves. Fitted into the team from ball one and made a great contribution taking a wicket with his very first ball. Unfortunately run out in his only innings it is not possible to form an informed opinion of his batting. We sincerely hope that Hayden attends trials for next seasons rep teams. Has ability.

Ben Reeves. Moves the ball about with ease. Has a lovely action with his wrist nicely behind the ball. The ball gets away from him occasionally and the development of consistent line and length will see Ben take many wickets. Only batted twice in the competition but showed enough to suggest he can handle a bat. Gets into good position and is learning to watch the ball right onto the bat.

Taj Savage. Developed his bowling well throughout the tournament. Made a genuine contribution with the ball against NWS Hurricanes with two wickets in two balls setting the team on the way to a hard-earned victory. Played a good innings against Penrith White with a quick fire 15. Defence and a concentration on keeping the ball on the ground is Taj’s homework for next season.

Dayton Stubbings. Playing his first season of rep cricket Dayton showed ability with his bowling with limited opportunities. Has the knack of moving the ball about and as he matures and learns patience will develop his line and length. One of the great lessons of this game of cricket is that it shows us that things don’t always go the way we would wish. Understanding that and staying positive is a valuable life lesson.

Zach Williams. Had a great season with the bat. Producing match winning innings in round 1 and round 3. Comfortable against the quicker bowlers Zach is well suited to the opening role. Works very hard at his skills and to finish as the top batter in the team was just reward. Shared the wicketkeeping duties with Nathan and had limited opportunities with ball. Zach’s off-season task is work on his batting to spinners. Congratulations Zach. You should be very proud.

COLIN COOPER CUP (UNDER 11)

The season started with a solid bowling and fielding performance that held Manly to a modest total. This great start to the season would be short lived when Manly took 11 wickets leaving us well short of the target.

Throughout the season the ability to apply pressure in the field was noted by our competitors and the scorecard but our batting just wasn’t at the required level to take advantage of the work done in the field.

Batting became the focus of training and as the season went on the performances showed signs of improvement. Toward the end of the season batting skill levels had improved with notable improvements found in several players.

We trialled some batting line-up changes in the last round which showed some promise and then in the final game a new reinvigorated line up was put to test.

In the final we batted first and worked hard to build an innings, it was a slow start but wickets were respected and the opening bowlers were seen off without reward. Runs came freely from this point and a defendable total was posted.

The proven skilled bowling and fielding performance came out again in the second innings and victory was found through taking 11 wickets. The season finished with the first win.

Whilst it may be difficult for players to remain engaged when the results go the other way, I was very impressed to see that the team remained optimistic about their endeavours and positive in their

ALFRED JAMES CUP (UNDER 12)

In the 2017/18 season the Under 12 Presidents were an experienced team with nine players who were returning players but we also welcomed three players who were playing representative cricket for the first time, Luke, Lachlan and Noah.

Round 1 was a home game against NWS Hurricanes which we won, batting first we made 150 and restricted the Hurriances to 125. Bray was the biggest contributor with the bat 50 runs not out. Supported in strong partnerships of 44 with Hamish and Tupps of 25. The standout bowler was Robo who took 3 for 10 off 7 overs. First timer Lachy did well with the ball 2-19 off 7, and Cooper M took 3 also.

Round 2 was an away game down against Illawarra but was a loss. We batted first, made 175 but were not tight enough in the field or the bowling. Batting contributions were spread, Mitch 34, Cooper K 42 and Fynn with 34. Lachy and Robo did well with ball, but as a team we gave away 38 extras – ouch!

Round 3 was back to a home game against Manly which resulted in our second loss. We batted first, but facing a strong bowling attack we struggled ending up all out for 95 in the 45th over. Standout was Hamish with 37, next best was Tups on 9. Bowling highlights included Ben 2/14 off 6, very economical Lachy 0/3 off 6 and Cooper Mc who was unlucky to not get a wicket with tidy spin bowling of 10 runs off 7 overs.

Round 4 was away against Hornsby Blue. We were defeated again, but we gave them a scare. We bowled first, and held them to 9/160. Lachy and Cooper Mc did the wicket taking, 3 each off 8 overs. Mitch also took 2. On the batting we were charging home and got to 148 but ran out of wickets. Fynn 34 and Hamish 31 the biggest contributors.

Round 5 after the break was home against Sutherland and was a dramatic, final ball win! We set a target of 143 with Luke taking the batting honours after opening to be caught when the team was on 117 with an individual score of 31. A team bowling performance followed with a spread of wickets Lachy 2, Robo 2, Ben 1, Cooper M 1, Hamish 1 and Luke 1. The final ball saw a dropped catch, a short-run and a run-out.

Round 6 was away against Newcastle. A loss. Newcastle batted first and got out to an impressive total of 213 on a fast field with short-boundaries. In reply, we got to 173. Ben’s high score with 43 a captain’s knock, but the best all round performance was Hamish with 23 off the bat and 3/23 off 8.

Round 7 was the final round with a play-off on 11 vs 12 against Sutherland at home. We finished the season with a convincing win. Sutherland batted first and we restricted them to just 98 by bowling them out in 42nd over. We chased the runs down in the 36th over. It was our fill-in player Xander, little brother of Fynn’s, who showed the older boys how to ball taking 3 for 9 off 6 overs. With the bat, Mitch lead the way by opening and getting the team to 82, and himself to 33 before getting caught.

Our final win saw us jump up to 9th on the ladder, out of 14 teams. Thanks to the boys for the season. From a coach’s viewpoint I have seen your progression and development individually and as a team. Thanks to Ben for captaining the side through the season. Thanks to the parents for the support and making the time to bring your boys to training and game days. My biggest thanks goes to Brook for managing so well, and allowing me to focus on the boys and the cricket. A special mention to Bruce for helping at training as well.

IDCA CUP (UNDER 13)

This season we welcomed Hamish Ryan and Josh into the side. Our aim was to be competitive and set individual challenges. Once again the team displayed their talent and ability when taking on the two top teams in the comp in the very first two rounds - posting good scores on both occasions. Unfortunately we fell short in the last two overs, which definitely was very disappointing for the boys.

However, the boys always showed their hunger to win during training and following a long drought it eventuated in an exciting win in our last game for 2017. This was a splendid “Christmas Gift” for the team and a great way to end the season.

During January 2018 Sam, Isaac, Raymond and Cameron participated in the Ballina Carnival with the DCA side. It was a great experience for the boys and renewed their confidence.

I would like to take this opportunity to convey a special “thank you” to Riley Pollard, Mahad Ezad, Kayden Myburgh-Sisam and Flynn Nicholls for helping out with the U13 PC team during the season.

Throughout this season it has been impressive to see the positivity and support shown by the boys to each other – it is very enriching and you have much to be proud of. I would personally like to congratulate the entire U13 PC side for the respect shown to the officials, opposition teams, parents and visitors throughout the season. It is a wonderful trait and on behalf of your parents and myself I would like to say how proud we all are of the way in which you conducted yourselves and hope you carry this through into the future.

James Boyd : Bowled the 2nd highest overs this season taking 7 wickets, with his best being 3/27. Batting down the order while he didn’t get many opportunities, he chimed in with a valuable 10 runs and was good at running between the wickets.

Hamish Batty : In his 1st rep game he score a maiden 50 vs Illawarra. A great innings to watch and a wonderful inspiration for his team mates. He also ended the season with another valuable 61 runs. A good team player and always very active in the field.

Raymond Dent : A good fielder and always kept the team motivated. Following selection to open the innings, he excelled in that spot! His highest rep score of 69 came in his 2nd game as opener. Ray’s attitude towards cricket, as demonstrated on many occasions, must be commended.

Hayden Dunn : Maturity showed this year with the team. His motivation on and off the field and eagerness to help out with drills was terrific. He was involved in some good partnerships and was given the task of scoring quick runs, which often resulted in him having to sacrifice his wicket for the good of the team.

Jack Gale : Had another good year with the gloves. His skills saved the team from chasing too many runs. He is a good “talker” amongst the players and kept the opposition batsman on their toes with his awesome keeping skills.

Cameron Gomesz (Capt) : Whose batting skills have improved immensely this year was involved in a few good partnerships. His highest score of 48* was one he can be proud of. He led the team by example throughout the year and played with maturity.

Cohen Haldane : Was extremely active on the field and very focussed on his game - always ready to cheer on his teammates as well – this was very inspirational and his attitude towards cricket is also commendable.

Isaac Nicholls : Missed out on a few games due to a broken wrist, however he made up for it in his first game back, taking 5/20 and helping the team to their 1st win. To his credit he continued to frustrate the opposition in the remaining games which was fun to watch. Isaac also participated in the Ballina carnival.

Samual Simmons : Once again he showed us what a versatile cricketer he is. With his very economical bowling, he finished his season with a massive 17 maidens off 46 overs - an economy of 1.91. Sam had a great day against Northern District, where he held on to 4 fantastic catches in the slips which included a one handed catch diving to his right.

Ryan Pilarowski : Will remember his 1st season in reps, where his best bowling was 3/1 and just missing out on a hat trick. Ryan was also handy with the gloves. His enthusiasm out on the field and at training was always at the highest level.

Mitchell Smith : Contribution to the team was immense. While not having many opportunities with the bat or ball he was as eager at each training session as on game day. Always willing to support his teammates and being amongst the action – a wonderful example of teamsmanship.

Josh Wilson : His quick fire 31* in our last game was one to remember. The way he took on the bowlers was a delight to watch. He is a very handy bowler with his best figure of 2/12. Eager to score runs fast, Josh is a great team player and a welcomed new team member.

ANTHONY NEALE CUP (UNDER 14)

After 2 strong trial performances against Hornsby – Kuringah and Manly in November, saw our expectations for a strong season build. We moved into the Round 1 home clash against Maitland full of confidence. Maitland went into bat first and set a very competitive 170 on Jamison 4, leaving us to chase down the total with a run rate required of just under 3.5. A strong second wicket partnership put us in a strong position. Then some intelligent batting by Blake and Kade saw us reach Maitland’s total with 7 balls to spare. Our confidence was sky high at this point, and we were looking ahead to the Central Coast in Round 2.

Then the wheels feel off. For Rounds 2, 3 and 4 we scored totals between 100 and 120 which were just not good enough. Our batting had just fallen away unexpectedly. However our bowling was exceptional, with Central Coast (R2) and Sutherland (R4) struggling to pass our totals. It was great to see the bowlers and team in the field attacking the opposition, with a “take no prisoners” approach. The Central Coast struggled to pass us, 6/115 in the 47th over and Sutherland 5/111 in the 46th over.

After the break saw us draw Manly (R5) in a must win contest. We won the toss and batted. A good saw us reach 90 at the second wicket and being 2/103 at drinks from 25 overs. Manly returned and tied the batting down with some excellent bowling and fielding. We were eventually bowled out for 151 in the 50th over. Soaring with confidence the team felt that we were in with a chance, although Manly had a strong batting line up, we felt that our bowling and fielding could restrict them. Some early wickets saw us on top early, however a strong third wicket partnership saw Manly heading towards our total. Then with some excellent fielding and tight bowling we started making inroads into the Manly batting order. Then in the 47th over Manly were 10/142. 10 runs to win, 1 wicket to get and 18 balls left. A nail biting “coach killing” finish saw Manly pass us with 3 balls to spare.

This saw us playing Hornsby – Kuringah for the wooden spoon. This position inspired the team to step up and finish the season on high. We won the toss and batted. The top order fired and after 50 overs we finished at 5/204. Where had this batting been? We took the field brimming with confidence, and eventually bowled Hornsby – Kuringah out for 145 in the 47th over. We finished the season strongly, in much the same way we started it. Nevertheless, the boys enjoyed their cricket and played well, representing the “baggy black” in fine fashion.

A special thanks to Andy Tebbutt our “off field” captain who had everything from lunches, scorers, square legs, bbq’s, match information and contacting the opposition organised to a tee. Also a special thanks to the parents, you are a great bunch of people who I have come to know well over the past couple of seasons and always provide assistance to keep the team moving forward. Boys, look forward to you returning the trials continuing your junior representative careers representing the “baggy black’.

ANDREW BLAMEY CUP (UNDER 16)

Round 1 - WIN at home to Sutherland. We lost the toss and were asked to bat. Allan Hope top scored with 86 runs and was well supported by Jared Calear-King (64) and Mitchell Lothian (66) who continued his pre-season form as we stormed our way to 7/279 from our 50 overs. On his reps debut, Jayden Moore (2/17) cleaned up both opening batsmen to get us off to a flying start. Jayden Geering (2/10) and Riley Wilson (2/10) dismissed the middle order leaving Sutherland with no choice but to close shop and conservatively bat-out the remainder of the innings. They finished nearly 200 runs short on 8/86.

Round 2 - WIN away to Manly. We lost the toss and were asked to bat - again. Riley Wilson (36) found the middle of the bat with some dashing strokeplay but it would be an ‘in form’ Mitchell Lothian who made a lasting impression on the game (and Manly’s sightscreen) as he crafted, then walloped, an impressive 71 runs. He formed partnerships with Aidan Rowe (26) and Jack Hancock (24) that helped us to reach 9/188. We rolled Manly for 167 to secure our first ever victory over the 4xPremiers. Josh Smith (3/34) was the pick of the bowlers while Jayke Searle (2/32) and Jayden Geering (2/38 + 3 catches!) combined to do the job on Manly.

Round 3 - LOSS at home to Maitland. Maitland joined the competition this year in an effort to impress for inclusion in future DCA competitions. They were a strong team. Batting first we only managed 146 runs. Jack Hancock (43) and Brad Webb (42) provided some resistance. Maitland chased our total in 31 overs for the loss of just 4 wickets. These guys would be the team to beat!

Round 4 - WIN away to Illawarra. After a rain delayed start we went out to bat on a pretty good deck. Brad Webb (54) continued his good form, so did Jared Calear-King (59) as we posted 7/186 from our allotted 40 overs. Illawarra were outclassed by our efforts in the field. Josh Smith (2/12), Jayden Geering

(2/21) and Emerson Rovere (2/25) restricted them to 9/117 by the end of play. Having now played all four of the top opponents we went into the Christmas break knowing that we were in with a chance to make the Grand Final if we won the next match.

Round 5 - WIN at home to Northern District. For the third time this season we were asked to bat first?! This proved to be costly for our opponents. Brad Webb (87) finally cracked the half century and top scored with a brilliant innings. Our other batsmen also chipped in: Aidan Rowe (32), Mitchell Lothian (29), Daniel Tupper (28) and Allan Hope (25) ending on 8/244. We won the match by 90 runs. Josh Smith (2/16) once again was reliable with the ball and was well supported by Emerson Rovere (2/19) and Riley Wilson (2/29). After the regular season rounds we finished in equal first place! Only trailing to Maitland on quotient.

GRAND FINAL - DRAW! away to Maitland. Nervously we headed to the Hunter Valley to face the hottest team in the competition. We lost the toss and were forced to bowl first for the only time all season. Jayden Moore (2/35) was back from injury and struck early to have them 1/13. Jayden Geering caught their key batsman at Deep Mid On to break the next partnership but then they settled into a rhythm and finished on 5/227. Our innings started disastrously as we lost 4 early wickets before Riley Wilson (43*) and Mitchell Lothian (26*) steadied the chase. A storm passed through the ground and halted play with the score evenly poised at 4/89 after 26 overs. Unfortunately the lightning rule came into play and we never managed to return to the field so play was abandoned. Maitland would be crowned Premiers. We would go home knowing that we competed right until the end of our most successful season yet.

Congratulations to all of the boys on such a great season and a fitting end to their junior rep careers.

Col Rowe, Coach

John Lothian, Manager

RON ARENDTS SHIELD (NEWCASTLE, UNDER 11) The 11’s DCA team headed to Newcastle in early January for their first rep carnival again with the objective of developing some key skills, working on some key strategies, identifying are strengths and weaknesses plus be competitive in all our matches.

Our draw was strong which meant we would certainly be tested. The first day was tough with a couple of 20/20 matches that was a new experience for the boys. While we feel just short in both fixtures the signs were good with but again probably a couple of key moments we failed to capitalise on.

That night we had a great group bonding session, recharged the batteries and devised our plans for day 2 & 3. With a couple of key areas to focus on and strategies in place we executed well across both days batting first and scoring very competitive totals and restricting our opponents in their chase. What was most pleasing was our ability to do the things we set ourselves very well including rotating the strike, building partnerships, running aggressively while having wickets in hand for the final overs. With the ball we bowled far more consistently maintain constant pressure to the end while taking our chances.

The final day in the playoffs against the best of the home town in Newcastle was just beyond us with the boys falling just short in a very good contest. Having bowled first we restricted the opposition to a very getting score but some early wickets put us under pressure in which we never really recovered.

Overall this was a great experience for all the boys and families. The key take out of the carnival was without the doubt the way the boys bonded as a team and built some new friendship that will hold them in good stand together as they play rep cricket for many years to come. They competed hard in all matches with passion, energy and enthusiasm with a great emphasis on encouraging their teammates both on and off the field which on occasions what commented on by our opposition coach.

Well done boys proud of your efforts!!!

LISMORE CARNIVAL (UNDER 12) The under 12s travelled to Lismore full of confidence and very keen to do well after a disappointing Arch Cawsey shield with only 1 win from 5 matches.

The boys knew they underperformed and the Lismore carnival was an opportunity to show what they were capable of.

After the first day and playing on a turf wicket for the first time, it became obvious our boys were up for the challenge winning both games convincingly.

Day 2 would prove to be a lot harder as we were up against Far North Coast and Illawarra who had beaten us easily earlier in the year. We played Far North Coast first up and like the first day we won convincingly, and we were now 3 from 3 and playing Illawarra for a place in the major semi. This game went down to the last ball and was one of the most entertaining and thrilling games I’ve ever seen.

Defending a very low total of just 84 runs our boys knew they had to field and bowl out of their skin if they were to progress to the major semi. What a performance, our bowlers hit their lines from ball one only conceding 10 extras. Every chance given was taken with some of the best catching and runouts this team has ever displayed. It came down to the last over. They needed only 6 runs off the last over to win and we needed 2 wickets. Ethan our captain threw the ball James to bowl the last over. Under incredible pressure James bowled the over of his life finishing the over with 2 wickets for no runs to win the match and progress through to the major semi.

The next day we faced up against another undefeated team Hunter Valley. They had beaten some very good sides, so we knew we were in for a very tough game. We were just one win away from contesting the final.

We lost the toss and were sent into bat. After losing an early wicket Ethan, Leo and Harry put together some very good partnerships to scrape our way to a total of 7 for 132.

Again, we knew we had to bowl and field at very high standard if we were to win. We started off very well but fell away and missed a lot of chances early that we needed take to win this match. Again, the result went down to the second last over with the Hunter Valley team proving to be the better team on the day to progress through to the final.

On the final day we were in a playoff for 3rd place against Hornsby. By this stage, both teams were fatigued and not really concerned of the result, so it was decided to let the boys relax play for fun. Hornsby reversed their batting line up and let batsmen and wicket keeper bowl and we did similar and made every player take a turn at keeping. Lots of fun had and good way to end what was an amazing carnival.

BALLINA CARNIVAL (UNDER 13) This year we travelled back up the North Coast to Ballina.

With a mixture of DCA, Presidents Cup and 3 players from the Gold Coast we were always going there to be competitive but at the end of the day have some fun.

We played the Mid North Coast in our first game and lost with 3 balls to go. All the boys agreed we needed a few more runs and our fielding could have been a lot better.

Our 2nd game was up against a Craig McDermott coached rep side from Brisbane. Most of the boys didn't know who he was, but our parents certainly did and it is was an enjoyable day. We batted first and set a competitive target of 132. Our fielding and bowling was much better and that was all we could ask. We were right in the game taking 7 wickets and it was looking like we would get the win however they got our runs in the 43rd over. A much improved game against stronger opposition and coach!!

Our third game was against Manly's full DCA side who were taking the carnival seriously.

When we finished our games each day we hit the pool and the boys had fun. Manly trained every day after each game so we knew it was going to be a tough day.

We made a pact before the start of the game to do our best and don't give up.

We kept Manly in the field for 48 overs and managed to get 93 runs for our efforts against some pretty good bowling. The boys gave it their best shot and managed to get 6 wickets with good bowling and again a much improved effort in the field. However they got the runs in the 35th over. 3 losses in a row didn't affect our spirits. Straight back to the pool for the compulsory team meeting and bonding session. Each game we were showing improvement and the boys were hopeful of a win.

Our 4th game was against a local Ballina side and was played right next to our Resort.

This was like a home game for us. Penrith batted first and we played in a very positive attitude and at the end of our 50 overs we were 8-206.

The boys were very upbeat and again their bowling and fielding continued to improve.

We kept the locals to 6-144 off 50 to record our first win of the carnival. Great effort all round. Back to the pool for some quiet celebrations.

Our 5th game was against the Ballina DCA side who seemed very confident against some very tired and sore Penrith boys. We batted first and at the end of the 50 overs we were 9-144.

Page 86

Page 87: REPRESENTATIVE SEASON YEARBOOK Rep Season Yearbook 2017-… · Anthony Neale Cup (Under 14) ... Glenbrook and Springwood, with each junior club linked to one of the hubs, providing

The boys were fired up when they walked out onto the field and managed to get early wickets and put Ballina under pressure. We were saving our best efforts till last and ended up bowling Ballina out for 108 in the 36th over. We finished the carnival with 2 wins out of 5.

I'd like to congratulate the boys on such a great effort and not giving up when at times they could of quite easily done that. To watch them bond on and off the field was great to see and I'm pretty sure they will always remember their afternoons in the pool at Lennox Head.

I'd like to thank all of our awesome parents and grandparents who came away and thank you for all of your help throughout the week and laughs.

It was great to catch up at the end of each day by the pool and have our own team meeting and bonding sessions. Without you all the week wouldn't be possible.

A big thank you to Cameron Gomesz, Sam Simmons, Isaac Nicholls and Raymond Dent for coming away with us. Without you we don't have a team and congratulations on all of your efforts while we were away.

Last but certainly not least, a big thank you to Darren Bedford who stepped in as manager to give me a hand for the week. I can't thank you enough Daz for all the work you did and you made my life much easier, with a lot of laughs along the way.

Thank you.

GRAEME MALCOLM SHIELD (NEWCASTLE, UNDER 14) After 3 years, it was back to Newcastle again for the 2018 carnival. The games were 50 overs, played on turf.

Round 1 - lost

We drew the toughest game first up - the Manly DCA side at Learmonth Park. Some overnight rain made the game on a turf wicket uncertain, but with some added morning sunshine, reduced overs and a later start, the umpires gave the thumbs up. We batted first and were 8/156 after 43 overs. Oscar Sultana scored 53 runs not out and Hemish Ahuja 32. The winds howled and Manly ended up 9/216 after 43 overs . Jamie Byrnes 3/42 off 6 and Will Sherwood 2/14 off 5.

Round 2 -won

We played Highlands District and the strong winds continued. The game was moved due to more rain overnight and the boys were back to a synthetic wicket (Smith Street Park). We fielded first and in the 50th over they were 10 for 155. Jamie Byrnes took 2/13 off 5 and Liam Bayliss 2/28 off 7. Our batters reached their total after 29 overs making 2/157. Eli Hardy retired 50 not out, Liam Bayliss 32 not out and Pat Costigan 28.

Round 3 - won

Next up were the Newcastle Presidents Cup side at Newcastle No 1 Sportsground. We batted first and reached 3 for 196. Max Becker retired 53 not out and Oscar Sultana retired 51 not out. After 50 overs they were 10/ 129 giving us our second win. Eli Hardy 2/18 off 8, Jamie Byrnes 2 /17 off 6, Brayden Burr 1/ 6 off 5 and Connor Potter-Jugovac 1 /30 off 9.

Round 4 - won

We played Mid North Coast at Passmore Oval. Penrith batted first and after 46 overs we were 9/ 216. Hemish Ahuja retired 50 not out, Max Becker 46 and Aiden Kells 39. Mid North Coast hung in there and the game became very close. Penrith got a wicket on the last ball and won the game 8/209. Will Sherwood was 4/30 off 6, Aiden Kells 1/16 off 2, Max Becker 1/27 off 6 and Aaron Stewart 1/39 off 10.

Finals Playoff - won

Page 87

With the first loss to Manly, we were out of the running for the top four. We were placed 5th and played South Eastern at Passmore oval batting first. We were bowled out after 39 overs reaching 10/164 (we had lost one player to sickness). Aiden Kells scored 50, Max Becker 28 and Oscar Sultana not out on 25. South Eastern were 6/143 after 40 overs which gave us a win to finish with - and overall - 5th position. Aaron Stewart 2/25 off 9, Oscar Sultana 3 /10 off 3.

Overall the carnival was a great mix of playing hard and lots of fun after the game (with our usual awards). A BIG thanks to Craig Kells for coaching the team and to all the parents who helped with the usual scoring, cooking BBQs, carting players around etc etc and to Jean for washing the uniforms each day.

WALTER TAYLOR SHIELD (ARMIDALE, UNDER 15) This year saw a different Penrith Under 15’s side travel to Armidale to contest the Walter Taylor Shield. Our team consisted of 6 players from the Under 15 Presidents Cup team along with 5 players from the Under 14 Presidents Cup team.

Round 1: Penrith v Lismore (day / night), Regional Australia Bank Sports ground (loss)

The boys were very keen to get this match underway, with nearly most of them never playing in a day / night match and using a white ball. Our game was scheduled for a 2:00pm start and keeping the boys calm throughout the day was an effort for their parents. Lismore won the toss and took to the turf wicket first and batted beautiful, setting a competitive score of 189 after 50 overs. Our bowling and fielding was tight with Raymond taking 2 wickets, Kyuss 2 wickets and Oscar, Patrick and Ryan 1 wicket each, Lachlan and Bailey brilliant in the field. Time for the Penrith boys to pad up and shine but unfortunately the Lismore boys came out firing with the ball, with Penrith all out in the 31st over on 74 runs. Top picks for batting were Jed on 18 and Stephen on 11.

Round 2: Penrith v Armidale #2, Bellevue Oval (win)

Our team was keen to get this game underway after coming off a loss the day before. Armidale won the toss and elected to bat first. A quick wicket to Penrith saw their opener walk and at 1 for 1 in the second over, momentum and talk picked right up and the team was pumped. Awesome bowling, fielding and team work saw Penrith restrict Armidale to 104 at the 48th over. Bailey taking 3 wickets with Oscar, Raymond, Jed and Stephen taking a wicket each. Great fielding also to Ryan, Kyuss and Patrick. With a fierce storm brewing over the mountains the boys went in to bat, knowing that a rain delay could happen. Lachlan hitting the ball all around the park and a top score of 42, with Nathan scoring 17 saw Penrith winning this match finishing on 3 for 107 at the 27th over. Congratulations to Bailey who was awarded the Man of the Match for this game.

Round 3: Penrith v Tamworth, Lambert Park (loss)

Penrith had heard lots of talk about the Tamworth team that we were versing today. Heading into this match saw us with one win and one loss. The toss was one by Tamworth who elected to bat. We started off confident and had Tamworth at 2 for 10 at the 10th over. Our bowling and fielding was brilliant today with standout bowling achievements to Ryan with 4 wickets and Jed with 3, fielding was top notch with Nathan taking 4 catches. At the 46th over we had Tamworth out with 10 for 122. Our boys came out very confident that we could win this match, but Tamworth had other plans, with their star bowlers taking aim, Jessica taking 4 for 16 off 9 and Joey 3 for 5 off 7. Unfortunately we just couldn’t get back into the match, and Penrith were all out at the 34th over on 76.

Round 4: Penrith v Armidale #1, Lambert Park (loss)

Penrith were excited as Oscar finally won a toss and batted first. The boys started strong but from the 20th over we started to crumble with wickets falling cheaply. Lachlan scoring 37, Ryan 29 and Blake finishing the carnival with another not out. At 40 overs Penrith finishing with 10 for 139. Sending Armidale into bat the talk was loud, taking our first wicket in the 11th over and having Armidale at 1 for 21, the team was pumped but on came a local Armidale boy named Ben Murphy, who unfortunately smashed us around the park and top scored with a not out 88. Today wasn’t a win for Penrith as Armidale finishing on 2 for 143 at the 35th over. A great experience though for the Penrith boys to play such a skilled cricket team.

Finally I would just like to congratulate the Under 15 team on not only their performances, but on the great sportsmanship they displayed throughout the whole carnival. They are a fantastic group of boys who wore their baggy black proud.

Thank you to my trusty side kick Donna, who managed the team and made sure that everything ran smooth and thank you to the amazing parents that made my job just that bit easier.

STAN AUSTIN CARNIVAL (TAREE, UNDER 16) For the first time ever Penrith sent an U/16 team to the Mid North Coast to compete in the Stan Austin Carnival hosted by the Manning DCA.

Game 1. Our opponents posted 198 from their 50 overs. Jayke Searle and Jack Trezise were among the leading wicket takers. Our chase started well with Jack Trezise and Allan Hope. The rest of the top order offered some confident stroke play, especially Daniel Tupper who bombed six after six but wickets began to fall and only Jack Trezise (47) managed to hang around. Unfortunately we fell 30 runs short of the chase.

Game 2. Batting first Matthew White (23) hit 5 quick boundaries. From that point on Tamworth bowled full and straight hitting the stumps and pads frequently to end our innings on 74 just 30 overs in. Tamworth chased our score with the loss of just 2 wickets - both claimed by Jayke Searle. We were beaten thoroughly! We enjoyed dinner beside the Manning River under a setting sun at the Irish Pub and agreed to bounce back tomorrow.

Game 3. Overnight wind and rain blew the covers off the turf pitch so we headed to a synthetic pitch at Old Bar to play Far North Coast. Bowling first we restricted the opposition to 88 with some great catching and fielding. Reuben Ford was the best of the bowlers with 2/4. Our captain Luke Gale (27) led the chase with some strong hitting. We secured our first victory in just 24 overs and headed home for a swim. That night, Jack and Jayke collected performance awards at the carnival BBQ in Taree.

Game 4 was an orchestrated rendevouz with our old friends Manly Warringah. Luke Gale elected to bat first on our ‘home’ ground at Harrington under the watchful eyes of our favourite umpires Geoff and Bill. This would be the very final rep game for some of our DCA boys. Jack Trezise (45) continued his good form. Aidan Rowe (34) batted with the tail after Jack was dismissed to get us to the defendable total of 133. Jayden Moore (4/8) and Jayke Searle (3/11) dismantled Manly’s batting order leaving them 60 runs short of our total! Another win and a great way to finish the week.

A huge thank you to all of the parents and helpers - especially Jack Gale and Will Tupper who substituted in the field all week!

Col Rowe and John Lothian
