PREFACE

Man’s efforts to conquer diseases and the desire for better health are continuous. One of

the methods to conquer diseases is to have systematic data about these diseases, which can be

used by the Health personnel dealing with preventive and curative measures. The scheme of

Medical Certification of Causes of Death is one such scientific tool, which tries to analyse the

causes of death, on an annual basis. Under this scheme, certified causes of death are collected

from the selected hospitals in the State in the prescribed form no 4, coded and classified

according to the National list. This process is entwined into the Civil Registration System to

enable coverage of all the institutions as and when the infrastructure improves.

2. This report is the twentieth in the annual series. To begin with, the scheme was

introduced in 44 hospitals in 1967 in the State. Later, it was extended to teaching, district &

specialised hospitals. The coverage stood at 370 hospitals in 1999.

3. Our sincere thanks to all the selected hospital authorities who have continuously

supported our efforts by submitting the requisite qualitative data in time. Their continued co-

operation in the future is keenly sought.

MEDICAL CERTIFICATION OF CAUSES OF DEATH-2000

Introduction

There has been continuous efforts by human beings to conquer diseases. While some age

old diseases seem to be under control, suddenly, they erupt. In addition new ones emerge. The

causes of mortality and morbidity are both natural and man-made. Earthquakes, floods and

famines speak a lot for the natural disasters. People are also seen dying out of manmade

conditions like starvation, malnutrition, under-nutrition and poverty. In order to know the

profile of different natural & man made causes and to present them in a meaningful way, the

International Community of Medical Professionals under the aegis of World Health

Organisation have codified the diseases & named them “International Classification of

Diseases”.

This International Classification of Diseases is altered & adopted to the Indian conditions

under the scheme of Medical Certification of Causes of Death. Most important mortality like

Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rate & Child Mortality Rate can be derived from this.

This report is based on the 10th

revision of International Classification of Diseases. The

prescribed Form (No 4) has to be filled & issued by the physician who attended the deceased

during his/her last illness. This Form which clearly spells out the various causes of death is the

basis for this survey.

1.1. Enabling Provision in the Registration of Births & Deaths Act, 1969.

This Act contains a section regarding compulsory Medical Certification. Section 10(3) of

the Act (given below) read with Rule (7) of the Karnataka Registration of Births & Deaths

Rules, 1999 have made a provision for this. These together enable the State to obtain from the

medical practitioner/physician who attended the deceased during his/her last illness, a

certificate, free of cost, as to the underlying & immediate causes of death.

Section 10(3) of the RBD Act, 1969: “Where the State Government as required under Sub-

Section (2) that a certificate as to the cause of death shall be obtained, in the event of the death

of any person who, during his last illness, was attended by a medical practitioner, the medical

practitioner shall , after the death of that person, forthwith issue without any fee, to the person

required under this Act to give information concerning the death, a certificate in the prescribed

form stating to the best of his knowledge & belief the cause of death; & the certificate shall be

received & delivered by such person to the Registrar at the time of giving information

concerning the death as required by this Act”. The Act has also a clause incorporated for

maintaining confidentiality of the information on cause of deaths, available in the registration

records. With Karnataka Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 1970 being replaced by

Karnataka Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 1999, Form 8 has been replaced by Form 4.

1.2 Meaning & scope of cause of death

The term “cause of death” has been defined as to go back to the root/underlying cause. It

is “the morbid condition to which can be traced the sequence of events ultimately resulting in

death”. It is this underlying cause which is the key element, particularly, if a number of ailments

had affected the deceased prior to his death. The form prescribed for certification has two parts,

part-1, for recording the diseases suffered by the deceased in a specific sequence, to facilitate

segregation of the underlying cause from the immediate cause and part-2 for other significant

morbid conditions, even, if they were not responsible for the death. The report of the inquesting

authorities is given preference in case of unnatural deaths leading to medico-legal cases.

2. Limitations of the Civil Registration System

The registration of deaths based on the returns received during 2000 was 77.6% of the

expected number of deaths in the state. Moreover, adequate infra structural facilities are not

available in rural areas for implementing the scheme. Even among the deaths reported, causes

are not always mentioned. In spite of these limitations, attempts have been made to fulfill the

following objectives.

3.Objectives

The objectives of the scheme are:

(i) To obtain mortality profile by causes, age & sex.

(ii) To study external/unnatural causes.

(iii) To study causes of infant & maternal mortality.

4. Coverage

For the first time, in 1967, the scheme was introduced in 44 hospitals. It was extended to

168 hospitals by 1990. 352 hospitals with a bed-strength of 20 or more in towns & cities with a

lakh or more population (as per 1981 census) were covered in 1991. This expansion was taken

up as per the recommendations of the workshop on statistics of cause of death held during 1986

at New Delhi. In 2000, 370 hospitals were covered and 56360 medically certified deaths in

Urban areas were brought under the scheme. The coverage of deaths increased marginally over

1999(an increase of 3.8%). This would amount to 40.2% of the total number of deaths

registered in urban areas during the year. The coverage is confined only to institutional deaths.

Though the sample is representative, generalisations are not recommended, since a large

number of events remain outside the ambit of the survey.

Category wise, major composition of hospitals is as follows. General hospitals-76.7%.

Maternity homes and Paediatric centres –10.3%, Teaching hospitals- 3.8% followed by

Tuberculosis hospitals-2.7%

. Bed-strength wise, largest share of 73.8% was taken by hospitals with bed-strength

<25-100. The next significant category was 101-200 with 8.9%. Hospitals with bed-strength

between 201-300 was the next with a percentage share of 5.4% This was followed by those with

bed-strength more than 500. The least share were those with bed-strength between 401-500

(1.4%) preceded by those of 301-400 (2.7%).

5. Flow of data & processing.

The cause(s) of death certified by the doctors were sent in the prescribed Form (No 4)

directly from the selected institutions on a monthly basis to this office. They were scrutinised &

coded following the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision & Table-9 derived

as per the national list prescribed/designed by the Registrar General, India. Data was processed

at the in house computer centre of the CNL Division of the Directorate.

The district-wise classification is based on the “Usual residence of the deceased and not

on the basis of place of the deceased’s last admission/treatment”.

An attempt is made to analyse the data districtwise. It may be observed from Table-2 that

deaths in Bangalore (urban) district with 82 hospitals were the highest because of its size and

infrastructural facilities available for medical care. Dharwad had the second highest number of

hospitals. Less than five hundred deaths were accounted for by each of the districts of Bidar,

Chikmagalur, Haveri, Koppal, Raichur and Uttara Kannada. Least number of deaths were from

Koppal.

6. Main Findings. 6.1 Deaths by major cause groups: an analysis.

.Table-3 shows deaths by major cause groups further classified by sex & the rank of

each major cause, as per 10th

revision of International Classification of Diseases.

For a consistently long period of time, four major cause groups have been on the top of

the killer list. They are (1) “Diseases of the Circulatory system” (2)“Certain Infectious and

parasitic diseases” (3) “Certain Conditions Originating in the Perinatal Period” and (4)

“Injury, poisoning and Certain other Consequences of External Causes”. Of these, the

group “Diseases of the Circulatory system” has been topping the list with 26.3%,an increase

of 4.7% over 1999. It claimed 14831 deaths out of the total of 56360 deaths. Compared to

1999, it has taken an additional toll of 3117 deaths. This is followed by “Certain Infectious &

parasitic diseases”with 8542 (15.2%)deaths. “Certain Conditions Originating in the

Perinatal Period”, a group affecting only the new born are those who are less than one year old

has taken the third place from fourth during 1999. It claimed 5786 deaths(10.3%). This reflects

on the kind of nourishment the child, perhaps the mother gets in the prenatal period. Fourth in

the order is “Injury, poisoning and Certain other Consequences of External Causes” which

has taken a toll of 5193 deaths (9.2%). The havoc caused can be imagined considering that

together, these four were responsible for as many as 61% of the total deaths.

Relatively, other important groups in the descending order were (5), “Diseases of the

Digestive System”(7.3%), (6) “Diseases of the Respiratory System” (6.4%),(7) “Symptoms,

signs and Abnormal Clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified”(5.6%), ( 8)

“Endocrine, nutritional & metabolic diseases ”(4.6%), (9) “Diseases of the Nervous system”

” (3.9%), (10) “Neoplasms” (3.8%), (11) “Diseases of the Genito-urinary system”(2.4%),

(12) “Diseases of the blood & blood forming organs and certain disorders involving the

immune mechanism”(2.1%), (13)“Congenital Malformations, Deformations &

Chromosomal Abnormalities (1.1%), (14)” Pregnancy,Child birth & puerperium”(0.9%),

(15)“ Diseases of the Skin & Subcutaneous Tissue” (0.4%), (16) “Mental & Behavioural

disorders” (0.2%), (17) “Diseases of the Musculo skeletal system & connective tissue”

(0.1%), (18) “ Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa” and(19)“Diseases of the Ear and Mastoid

process” together had a share of 0.02%.

6.2 Mortality by sex .

There were 36123 male deaths and 20237 female deaths. In almost all the major cause

groups, male deaths outnumbered female deaths (except of course in pregnancy complications).

Only in the case of “Diseases of the blood & blood forming organs and certain disorders

involving the immune mechanism” female deaths were more than male deaths, that too only

marginally. Sex wise difference was very distinct in the group “Mental & Behavioural

Disorders” (105 male deaths compared to 18 female deaths). Male deaths were more than one

and a half times than female deaths in case of major groups “Certain Infectious & parasitic

diseases” & “Diseases of the Circulatory system” . It was more than double in “Diseases of the

Respiratory System” and “Diseases of the Digestive System”.

6.3 Impact of different cause groups .

A brief profile of the major cause groups is undertaken to study their important component

causes. We could start as per ranks in descending order.

6.3.1 Diseases of the Circulatory System (Group-IX) Rank 1

The fact that it was the top killer with a share of 26.3% of the total deaths shows the

enormity of the cause. This has been the top killer for the past eight years. Five causes of this

group have been the major killers. (1)“Cerebro vascular disease”,(2) “Acute Myocardial

Infarction”, & “All Other Ischaemic Heart Disease”. These have taken 65% of the deaths

of this group. They are followed by “Other forms of Heart Diseases” and “All other

Hypertensive diseases” and with 11% & 10.4%, respectively.

Worst affected were those who crossed 70+ years of age. People in the age group 55-64

were the next to be hit. It is sad that people in the relatively younger age group of 45-54 were

also victimised taking the third rank in the group.

6.3.2. Certain Infectious & Parasitic Diseases(Group-I) Rank 2

It has maintained its second rank. “Respiratory Tuberculosis” which is the top

individual killer is a part of this group, 3517 deaths were due to this. Worst affected were the

middle aged in the group 35-44. The other important sub groups are “Diarrhoea & gastro

enteritis of presumed Infectious Origin”(1086),“Septicaemia”(874)“Malaria”(428), and

under Viraldiseases “Japanese Encephalities”( 336)”,and “AcuteHepatitis”(325).

Individually, these have been responsible for more than three hundred deaths.

Maximum hit were in the age group 25-34, 35-44 and 45-54. All put together accounted

for 3976 deaths,(46.5%).

6.3.3. Certain Conditions originating in the perinatal period: (Group XVI) Rank 3

This is the third largest killer disease which had taken 5786 young lives, an increase of

753 more compared to 1999. Like in 1999, “Slow Fetal growth, Fetal malnutrition &

Immaturity” was the top killer (46%), followed by “Hypoxia, Birth asphyxia & other

Respiratory Conditions”(32.7%). The residual category of “All other Conditions

originating in the perinatal period” took 16.5% of the lives in the group. Of the total infant

deaths, 79.7% can be attributed to this cause group. More male children died compared to

females.

6.3.4. Injury, Poisoning and Certain Other Consequences External Causes (Group XIX)

Rank 4

9.2% of the total deaths occurred due to this. Happily there is an decrease of 3169 deaths

compared to 1999. Out of a total of 11 sub causes, three causes have taken 90% of the deaths.

In the descending order, they are “Burns and Corrosions”, Poisoning by Drugs & Biological

Substances and Toxic effects of substances chiefly nonmedicinal as to source” &

“Intracranial & Internal Injuries including Nerves”. Only in “Burns & Corrosions” the

number of female deaths outnumbered the males (it was more than double-1499 females vis-à-

vis 631 males). Worst affected were in the age-groups 25-34, 15-24 & 25-44. As many as

67.8% of the deaths were in this age group. It is pathetic that people in these early age-groups

became victims to fatality through entirely man-made causes.

The magnitude of these causes can be driven home from the fact that just four out of the

19 categorised groups have been found to be responsible for 61% the total deaths.

6.3.5. “Diseases of the Digestive System”(Group-XI) Rank 5

This was the next major cause group. “All other diseases of the other parts of the

digestive system” was the top most killer with 1977 deaths. The difference between this cause

of death & the next killer disease i.e. “Diseases of the Liver” was too wide -1977 deaths due to

the former as against 879 deaths of the latter. “Peritonitis” with 325 deaths ranked third.

“Paralytic ileus and Intestinal Obstruction without Hernia” and “Gastric and Duodenal

Ulcer ” took a toll of 322 and 299. Worst affected were in the age-groups, 45-54, 35-44 & 55-

64, respectively.

6.3.6 “Diseases of the Respiratory System”(Group-X) Rank 6

This occupied the sixth rank with 3619 deaths. Important Causes under this were Lower

Respiratory Diseases like “Acute Bronchitis and Acute Bronchiolitis, “Bronchitis, Chronic

& Unspecified Emphysema” & “Asthma” (1233deaths), “All other Diseases of the

Respiratory System” (1505deaths) and “pneumonia” (702 deaths). These five constituted

95.1% of the deaths in the group. Worst affected were in the age group 70 & above, followed

by those in the age group 55-64 & 45-54 respectively.

6.3.7. “Symptoms, Signs and Abnormal Clinical & Laboratory findings, Not elsewhere

Classified(XVIII) Rank 7

This is a set of diseases with vague causes. “All other symptoms, signs and Abnormal

Clinical & Laboratory findings, Not elsewhere Classified ” took a toll of 2628 (82.2%) out of

the total of 3198 deaths in the group. The next in the group was death due to “Shock”(345).

Worst affected were in the age group 70 & above and 55-64.

6.3.8 “Endocrine, Nutritional & Metabolic Diseases & Immunity Disorders”(Group-IV)

Rank 8

Deaths due to this group are not age specific. They are either due to malnutrition or

under nutrition. There are only two major sub-groups in this. Of these “Diabetes Mellitus”

took 87.3% of the deaths, (2302 out of a total of 2636), followed by “All Other Endocrine and

Metabolic Diseases” which claimed 156 deaths. People in the 70& above age groups and 55-64

were the worst affected

6.3.9. “Diseases of the Nervous system ”(Group-VI) Rank 9

Three important sub causes have occupied the prime place, viz., (1) “All other diseases

of the Nervous system ”,(2) “Meningitis” and (3) “Encephalitis, Myelitis and

Encephalomyelitis”. Of the total 2223 deaths, 1933 deaths were due to these three. The first

alone was responsible for 35% of the deaths. The three put together took a toll of 87% deaths in

the group. Adults in the 70+ age group were the worst affected followed by those in the age

group 15-24.

6.3.10.“Neoplasms”(Group-II) Rank 10

“Neoplasms” in medical terminology refer to tumours, both malignant and non-

malignant.. There were 2171 deaths due to this and has taken the tenth rank. Of the different

kinds of neoplasms, “Malignant Neoplasm of Trachea, Bronchus and Lung” with 287deaths

took the first place. This was followed by “Malignant Neoplasm of Stomach”(204),

“Leukaemia” with 182 deaths & “Malignant Neoplasm of Meninges, Brain and Other

parts of Central Nervous System” with 172 deaths. People in the age group 55-64 were the

prime target followed by those in the age group70 & above and 45-54. The three age groups put

together accounted for more than 65.5% of the deaths.

6.3.11. “Diseases of the Genito-urinary System”(Group-XIV) Rank 11

This group ranked eleventh in the series. “Renal failure” was the highest killer in this

group with 686 deaths, followed by “Glomerular Diseases (including Nephritic Syndrome)”

with 559 deaths. Both accounted for 93.3%.

People in the age group 70 & above were the worst affected victims followed by those in

the age group 55-64 and 45-54.

6.3.12. “Diseases of the blood & blood forming organs and Certain Disorders involving the

immune Mechanism” (Group 111) Rank 12

This took the twelfth place. Only in this group, female deaths exceeded that of males.

“Other Anaemias” was the only major sub group with 998 out of a total of 1159 deaths forming

86.1% of the deaths. People in the age groups 70+, 25-34,35-44, 55-64 and 15-24 were

affected in the order.

While the first twelve major cause groups had a toll of more than thousand deaths each

in their account, the following seven major cause groups accounted for less than thousand deaths

each.

6.3.13.“Congenital Malformations, Deformations & Chromosomal Abnormalities”(Group-

XVII) Rank 13

Being in the thirteenth position, it took 612 lives. As the name itself indicates, these

deaths occur due to some malformation in the congenital stage. “Congenital malformations of

the Circulatory System” (467) & “All other congenital malformations, deformations &

chromosomal abnormalities, not elsewhere classified” (138) were the two important cause

groups. Children less than one year were the worst affected (422 out of a total of 612).

6.3.14. “Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Puerperium”(Group-XV) Rank 14

The number of deaths due to this cause was 521. “Infections of Genitourinary tract in

Pregnancy” took the highest toll in this with (146) followed by “Oedema, Proteinuria and

Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Puerperium” with 121 deaths.

The sub groups were “Complications Pre-Dominantly Related to the puerperium” and

“Other Complications of Pregnancy and Delivery” with 110 & 89 deaths respectively.

It goes without saying that females in the reproductive age groups of 15-24 and 25-34

were the worst affected. It is an area for urgent remedial measures.

6.3.15. “Diseases of the skin & Subcutaneous tissue”(Group-XII) Rank 15

This was ranked fifteenth and there were 243 deaths due to this. “Infections of skin &

subcutaneous tissue” one of the major components of this group, took a toll of 63.7% of the

deaths (155)..

6.3.16. “Mental and Behavioural Disorders”(Group-V) Rank 16

The ranking for this group was sixteenth, same as during 1999 and 123 deaths occurred

due to this. Of these, “All other mental and behavioural disorders” was the single largest

sub group with 116 deaths. Male female ratio was disproportionate,105 males as against 18

females. Worst hit were the people in the age group 45-54 & 35-44 (65 deaths), followed by 25-

34 (21 deaths).

6.3.17. “Diseases of the musculoskeletal system & connective tissue”(Group-XIII) Rank 17

63 deaths were due to this. “All other diseases of the musculo skeletal system &

connective tissue” with 43 deaths was the important sub-group followed by “Rheumatoid

Arthritis and Other Inflammatory Polyarthropathies” with 18 deaths. Most vulnerable were

in the age group 70+ and 55-64.

6.3.18 “ Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa (Group VII) Rank 18

The total number of deaths due to this cause was 12 out of which 11 were males & only

one female.

6.3.19 “ Diseases of the Ear and Mastoid Process” (Group VIII) Rank 19

The last among nineteen took a toll of 10 deaths out of which 6 were male and 4 were

females of different age groups.

7. The principal individual causes

Some of the individual causes have claimed such a large number of lives that a brief

analysis of them is worth attempting. These, individual causes/cause groups which have taken a

toll more than one thousand deaths have been named the “Principal Individual Causes”. There

are just 17 of them which together were responsible for 35733 deaths out of a total 56360

deaths or 63.4% of the deaths. Table 4 gives a picture of these principal causes along with their

percentage shares and are ranked in the descending order. Most of the causes have repeatedly

figured as the main killers with a slight change in the ranking. Of these seventeen, five relate to

heart diseases, three to injury & poisoning & two relate to infant deaths. The heart related

diseases in the descending order are (1) “Cerebrovascular Disease”, (2) “Acute Myocardial

Infarction”, (3) “All other Ischaemic Heart Diseases” (4) “Other forms of heart diseases”, and

(5) “All other Hypertensive Diseases”. The three causes under injury and poisoning are (1)

“Burns and Corrosions”, (2) “Poisoning by drugs and biological substances & Toxic effects of

substances chiefly nonmedicinal as to source” & (3) “Intracranial & Internal Injuries including

nerves”. “Burns & Corrosions ” has come down to the fourth place from second in 1999. Those

killing the infants were (1) “Slow foetal growth, foetal malnutrition & immaturity”, (2)

“Hypoxia, birth asphyxia & other respiratory conditions”. Except under “Burns & Corrosions”,

under all other causes, male deaths exceeded that of females. They were more than two times in

case of ‘Acute Myocardial Infarction’, “ Respiratory tuberculosis” and it was more than three

times in the case of “All other Diseases of the other parts of the Digestive system”. The

difference was very wide in the case of “Intracranial and internal injuries including nerves” with

839 of males against 178 of females. On the whole, the sex wise distribution of deaths under

principal individual causes were 64.9% & 35.1% for males and females respectively. In case of

‘Burns & Corrosions’, female deaths were more than double the male deaths.

8. Analysis by age and sex

Eleven age wise groupings (as per the national list) have been made & deaths coded

according to the age group. Table-5 depicts the break-up of these age groups, sex -wise.

In terms of age, the distribution of deaths is highly skewed. Among the males, those who

had crossed 70 years ranked first followed by those in the age group 45-54 and 55-64 with

51.4% of male deaths. 35-44 had taken fifth rank with 4138 deaths. Infant deaths occupied the

fourth place. Least vulnerable were those in the group5-14.

Among the females also, 70+ had the largest share. Infant deaths occupied the second

place. Third place was for those in the prime age group of 25-34. This may be because a number

of deaths occurred due to Pregnancy Complications and Burns.

Upto the age group of 25-34, the percentage shares of different age groups were more in

the case of females than in the case of males, whereas, the position changed completely the other

way, commencing with the age group 35-44 onwards.

In the aggregate also, 70+ age group was the first to be hit. The next hit were in the age

group 55-64 and 45-54. Infant deaths occupied the fourth place.

9. Leading causes of infant deaths.

The death of a child which has not survived its first birthday is defined ‘Infant death’.

This, along with ‘Under-five mortality’, are reckoned as indicators of development. An effort

is made to find out the various causes responsible for these deaths. These are shown in Table-6

in the descending order. They accounted for 7258 deaths, an increase of 864 compared to 1999.

Of these, just one cause “Slow Fetal Growth, Fetal Malnutrition & Immaturity,” has taken a toll

of as much as 36.8% followed by “Hypoxia, Birth Asphyxia & Other Respiratory Conditions”,

with 26.1% deaths, “All other conditions originating in the perinatal period” was the third. The

three together have caused 76.1% of the infant deaths. Least harmful among them was ‘All

Other Congenital Malformations , deformations & chromosomal abnormalities, not elsewhere

classified’ with 101 deaths to its account.

10. Leading causes of Maternal deaths.

A few causes lead to deaths in the pre and post natal conditions of women. These are

classified as maternal deaths. Their number has increased from 437 during 1999 to 521. They

constituted 2.6 % of the total female deaths. Table -7 is a depiction of these causes (in a

descending order ). Of the causes listed, the most important was “Infectious of Genito Urinary

tract in Pregnancy”with 28% followed by “ “Oedema, Proteinuria and Hypertensive disorders in

pregnancy, child birth and the puerperium” with 23.2%%. The deaths due to “Complications

pre-dominantly related to the puerperium” was 110 (21.1%). The number who died due to

these three causes were more than hundred. Where as the other four causes it is less than 100.

Important findings

1.The sheme is in vogue in the State since 1967 and is aimed at drawing a profile of

mortality by cause, age and sex on an annual basis. To start with, 44 hospitals were covered

under the scheme and this grew up gradually to 370 hsopitals.

2. The enabling provision in the RBD Act, 1969,read with the KRBD Rules, 1970, have

been largely responsible for the coverage. This also would help in 100% coverage of causes of

death once the necessary infrastucture is established.

3. Year after year, “Diseases of the Circulatory System”, has been the most fatal

group. The first four of the major cause groups were responsible for 61% of the deaths.

They are (1) Diseases of the Circulatory System (2)Certain Infectious & Parasitic diseases

(3) Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period.(4) Injury, Poisoning and certain

other consequences of external causes

4. Among the individual causes, “Burns and Corrosions ” took the highest toll of

females & “Acute Myocardial Infarction”of males.

5. Infant deaths have taken the fourth place among the deaths by age.

6. Agewise, the age group 70+ had the highest share among males, females and total.

7..In all major causes, number of male deaths exceeded that of females except in the case

of “ Diseases of blood & blood forming organs and certain disorders involving the immune

mechanism”.

8..Leading cause of Infant deaths was ‘Slow fetal growth, fetal malnutrition &

immaturity’ & of Maternal Deaths “Infections of genitor urinary tract in pregnancy”.

9. The same cause groups have topped the killer list for several years and so have the

individual causes with slight variation in the ranks in different years.
