IV. Overview of Programmes Conducted by the IMH (January to June 2013)
Public Education (1) Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC08) The 12-hour Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC) was specifically designed to serve
the needs of the society since October 2009. It provided training on common mental illnesses
and skills in managing mental illnesses to professionals, health care professionals and related
personnel who may come into contact with people with mental health problems or their carers
in their daily practice by comprehensive lectures, case discussions / vignettes, and interactive
workshops. In view of the overwhelming responses from previous classes, the eighth course
(MHC08) was conducted on 2 and 16 March 2013, with 88 participants including health care
professionals of the Hospital Authority, government departments and non-government
organisations.

(2) Basic Psychological Life Support (BPLS) Course The Public Education Subcommittee (PES) and the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance have
been co-organising the Basic Psychological Life Support (BPLS) Course since January 2011.
The BPLS Course provided knowledge on common mental health problems and treatments,
positive psychology, recognising stress and anxiety and skills in dealing with the
psychological reactions of victims in a first aid situation. For the two BPLS Provider Courses
held in January and March 2013, 49 and 37 members of the general public participated
respectively.
(3) Mental Health Talk The Hong Kong St. John Ambulance Brigade Cadet Command has invited the PES to
organise a three-hour Mental Health Talk for its member on 28 April 2013 and a series of
one-hour Mental Health talks for secondary school students from June to October 2013. It
aims to enhance the participants’ awareness and knowledge on general mental health and
stress management.
(4) Management of Workplace Violence (MoV) Training The Chain of Charity Movement (CCM) has invited the PES to organise a three-hour MoV
Training for the recruited volunteers who would provide caring services in the community.
The MoV Training Team of CPH delivered the captioned training on 8 June 2013 and very
positive feedback was received.

(5) Poster Presentation in the Hospital Authority Convention 2013 Two abstracts submitted by the PES have been selected for poster presentation in the Hospital
Authority Convention 2013 on 15 and 16 May 2013, entitled “Mental Health Promotion in
Hong Kong: a way to defeat stigmatisation and enhance the early intervention of mental
illness in the community” and “Application of Mobile Technology to Enhance Stress
Management and the Early Intervention of Stress-related Mental Health Problems in the
Community” respectively.

(6) Ten Healthy Mobile Phone/ Tablet Apps 2012 – Stress Reduction DIY The PES has developed an iPhone APP on stress management, namely “Stress Reduction
DIY (減壓情識)” in November 2011. The iPhone APP was nominated and awarded the “Ten
Healthy Mobile Phone / Tablet Apps 2012 (2012 十大健康手機 / 平板電腦應用程式)” by
the Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration (OFNAA), HKSAR Government.
Dr. Bonnie SIU and Ms. Rita SIU represented the PES and attended the prize presentation
ceremony on 6 April 2013. Steady increase in the download rate of the Stress Reduction DIY
app was noted and the accumulated download rate up to 30 June 2013 was 5,838.

(7) Educational Materials The publications of the IMH provide a good source of information on mental illness and
self-help guide to the general public. The information is handy and easily accessible at the
service units of CPH and online at the IMH website. To ensure the information is accurate
and up-to-date, the PES has continuously been reviewing all educational materials and reprint
those pamphlets with high demand. The materials updated from January to June 2013 are
listed as follows:
Five educational pamphlets were reviewed:
Insomnia “不吃安眠藥,治好失眠可以嗎?”
How to achieve mental health and overcome mental illness?
“如何擁有精神健康和克服精神病患?”
Schizophrenia “思覺失調”
Depression “不再抑鬱”
Common mental illness “解開精神病之謎”
In view of high demand, an educational pamphlet on Anxiety disorder “焦慮大亨” was
reprinted. All of the above updated materials are available for free distribution in different
service units and accessible on the IMH website.

(8) Health Column on Sing Tao Daily The PES continues to collaborate with the Sing Tao Daily in publishing articles written by
CPH colleagues as an effective medium to disseminate mental health knowledge to the public.
The articles are published under the health column“保健至專”inside the feature page of
the paper on alternate Mondays.
CPH colleagues have contributed to this project by actively submitting their articles.
Published articles are shared with all CPH staff via email. The collection of articles has also
been uploaded to the IMH website for public access.

Psychiatric Nursing Education
(1) Two-year Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training Programme The Graduation Ceremony for Class 7 of the Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training
Programme for the Hospital Authority was held on 1 February 2013. All the 30 pupil nurses
were graduated and they shared their joy, achievement and happiness with their relatives and
friends during the event.
A total of 30 trainees had been recruited for Class 11 of the Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training Programme for the welfare sector, which commenced on 4 February 2013.

Research (1) Research Skills Training Workshop The Research Subcommittee has been organising Research Skills Training Workshops which
comprise a series of interactive small-group workshops conducted by experienced researchers.
The series of workshops repeats once every six months, and is open to all CPH staff. The
workshops aim at promoting a culture of research and enhancing research skills among the
staff of CPH. The first series of four workshops in 2013 was held from April to June, and
trainee family physicians from Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) were invited. A total of 34 CPH
and TMH staff members had participated in these four workshops.
(i) Critical Appraisal of Research Papers (17 April 2013)
This workshop was conducted by Dr. William CHUI which was about critical appraisal of
research papers.

(ii) Searching Medical Literature and Using Reference Management Software
(29 May 2013)
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Mimi WONG, Associate Consultant of United Christian
Hospital. It focused on techniques in performing online search for medical literature, and
techniques in using Endnote, a citation management software.
(iii) Application of SPSS for Clinical Study (5 June 2013)
This workshop was conducted by Mr. Kenny WONG, Manager from the HA Head Office. He
demonstrated the basic concepts of biostatistics and the use of SPSS, a statistics software
commonly used in biomedical research. The workshop provided participants with hands-on
experiences on how to create data files and perform data analysis with SPSS.

(iv) Writing Research Proposals and Scientific Papers (26 June 2013)
This workshop was conducted by Dr. Simon LUI which included research methodology,
concept of research paradigm and common pitfalls in research design.
(2) Research Studies
As of June 2013, CPH has more than 30 on-going research projects and the IMH is actively
involved in the following research projects:
“A four-year prospective family study in patients suffering from first episode
psychosis: A quest for intermediate phenotypes and aetiology of psychosis”- Data
collection stage. As of June 2013, a total 188 patients with first-episode psychosis have
been phenotyped whereas 83 healthy control and 218 patients have been recruited for
endophenotyping and genotyping respectively.
“The heritability of neurocognitive and neuroanatomical endophenotype in twins
with psychosis” – Suspended until further notice.
“Neurological soft signs in chronic patients with psychosis and its susceptibility
genes: An extended study” –Data collection stage. As of June 2013, a total of 35
participants have been recruited.
“Theory of mind performance in patient with first-episode schizophrenia and
first-degree relatives: A cross-sectional case control study” –Data collection and data
analysis have been completed. A total of 41 patients with schizophrenia, 43 siblings of
these patients and 42 healthy controls have been recruited.

“Schizotypy traits or features in nonpsychotic first-degree relatives of patients with
schizophrenia: Cluster analysis using the Chapman Psychosis Proneness Scales” –
Data collection and data analysis have been completed. In Phase I of the study, a total of
190 siblings who had completed the Chapman’s anhedonia scales have been recruited. In
Phase II, a total of 29 patients with schizophrenia, 28 relatives of these patients and 33
healthy controls have been recruited respectively.

Patient and Carer Resource
(1) Community Partnership and Teens’ Life Coach Events A community partnership and teens life coach programme was jointly organised with the
Jardine Matheson Group. The programme included the following activities during the
reporting period:
“Walk Up Jardine House 2013” was conducted on 17 March 2013. The Dancing Group
was invited to perform during the event, with 21 patients participated and cheered for the
runners.
Visit to Nam Sang Wai (南生圍) and having Poon Choi luncheon (盆菜) under the
“Health in Mind Programme - Teen使行動” was conducted on 9 March 2013 in
collaboration with the San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School. A total of 10
patients joined the event.

“City Orienteering” was conducted on 26 January 2013 with nine patients. They
cooperated with the secondary school students and Jardine Ambassadors in order to
achieve some tasks in Kowloon district.
Press Conference of the “Central Rat Race 2013” was conducted on 18 June 2013, with
10 volunteers participated.
(2) Partnership Programme with Red Cross A partnership programme jointly organised with the Red Cross to celebrate Chinese New Year
was conducted on 23 February 2013, with 80 inpatients participated.

(3) Appreciation for Volunteers An annual appreciation to volunteers was conducted on 23 March 2013 to recognise their
support and contribution. A total of 86 volunteers were invited to join the event including
sharing of experience and thoughts and playing games.
(4) Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training Originated from Australia, two classes of 12-hour MHFA training programme were re-run in
the morning of four consecutive Saturdays in March, April and June 2013 respectively. A total
of 30 participants of the public attended the course.

Hospital Archives & Gallery Exhibition (1) Seminar on Art Facilitation in Health Setting A seminar on art facilitation in health setting was conducted on 30 January 2013, with Ms.
Fiona CHANG, Registered Expressive Art Therapist and Ms. Grace CHENG, Director of
Art-in-Hospital. Over 100 participants including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and allied
health professionals of the HA, as well as academic staff from local universities had attended
the seminar. There was a workshop of art facilitation after the seminar, with 28 participants.
The participants found the workshop stimulating and gave favourable responses.
(2) Staff Sharing Session “一人一劇場”
A staff sharing session titled“一人一劇場”was jointly conducted with the Playback
Theatre on 11 March 2013. Drama Therapist, Mr. Eddie YU and performers of the Playback
Theatre demonstrated their physical movement, music and drama to re-enact the stories
shared by the participants. A total of 32 staff attended.

(3) CPH In Pictures “每月一相”
The Hospital Archives and Gallery Exhibition Subcommittee organises regular display with
images depicting historical moments and a brief introduction outside the staff canteen. The
episode in May 2013 featured “Stories of Minor staff in the late 60’s”. Pictures of the old
“Club House of the Castle Peak Hospital Junior Staff Union” were shown that reflected the
contribution of frontline staff to the culture of Castle Peak Hospital.

V. Statistics of Educational Activities (Organised by the IMH and Invitations
Received)
The summary of all educational activities conducted by the IMH from January to June 2013 was
presented as per Appendix I. The activities were categorised into two types. The first type refers
to the activities that were initiated and organised by the IMH and the other type is invitations
received from other organisations for conducting talks or training courses.
A total of 61 activities were conducted, among which 48 activities were organised by the
IMH. A total projected net income of $219,998 was earned from the activities with 1,267
overall attendances. The breakdown of the activities by topics, target groups and geographical
locations of the participants is presented as per Appendix I.
Activities Organised by the IMH
A substantial fraction of the activities organised by the IMH during the reporting period focused
on topics related to general adult psychiatry, which accounted for 79% of the activities held. The
activities organised by the IMH mainly targeted at professional carers and patients. A projected
net income of $95,640 was generated from the activities organised by the IMH.
Invitations from Other Organisations Among the 13 invitations that we received from external organisations, including government
departments, non-government organisations (NGO) and educational institutions, most requested
for delivering training courses targeted mainly for the public. The projected net income was
$124,358.
Loan Record of Mental Health Educational Products One application from NGO / educational institution for borrowing our educational exhibition
boards / obtaining pamphlets or quoting / copying our publications, and linking up the IMH
website was received and approved.
