Timeline
Methodology
Quantitative telephone interviews among professional HVAC installers & plumbers.
The fieldwork was carried out during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic situation and
serious lock down in most of the countries in the survey. Therefore, USP decided to
conduct fewer interviews in the 6 countries: The United Kingdom (125), Germany (125),
France (100), Poland (100), Belgium (75), and the Netherlands (75).
Research objective
Monitoring developments regarding main trends in the installation market on a regular basis, in order to facilitate the strategic decision making of our clients.

Methodology
From the next chapter onwards, the given results for each country are weighted
by company size. During the survey, companies of different sizes/ FTE (Full time
employees) categories were interviewed in order to find out if there are interesting
and remarkable differences between different-sized installation companies. Three
company size categories are formed:
• Small: 1-4 FTE
• Medium: 5-14 FTE
• Large: 15 FTE and more
METHODOLGY AND
STRUCTURE
Results
The results in this report on a total scale per country are weighted so that all three
FTE categories have an equal influence on the total country results. This is done
because larger companies have a larger impact on the installation sector in a
country, and we think it is important that big companies are also well represented
so that the results are not heavily influenced by many smaller companies.
Structure of the report
First of all, in order to create better insights and readability, the most-mentioned
answer(s) or most important findings are marked.
In chapter 2, insights will be given into the activities of the installation companies.
Chapter 3 will focus on the turnover and order books of the companies.
The theme of this quarter will be discussed in chapter 4.
Finally, in the appendix, additional information about the survey (questionnaire), a
detailed turnover/ order book overview and information about USP Marketing
Consultancy itself can be found.
5
This paragraph gives an overview of the positions of the
respondents and the size of the companies that were
interviewed for this survey. These results are unweighted, so
one can see the characteristics of the actual respondents/
companies that participated this quarter.
From the next chapter onwards, the given results for each
country are weighted by company size.

INTRODUCTION | EUROPEAN OVERVIEW
• Every quarter, besides the regular chapters about installation characteristics and turnover and order books, a theme will be discussed. The theme of the European
Mechanical Installation Monitor Q1 2020 is ‘Calculation Tools & Building Information Modelling (BIM)’. The same topic was also covered in 2015 and 2018.
• Nowadays, many installation systems have become more and more complex. Different types of installation systems are often connected with each other and
installers need to have knowledge about a broad range of installation systems. Besides that, on large scale building projects, installers need to work with several
other parties who are involved in the building process. This makes clear communication and close cooperation essential. To support the work of the installers,
manufacturers of installation systems try to develop different calculation tools. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a concept which plays an important role in
today’s (especially large and complex) building projects. This chapter will give insights in the knowledge and usage of these calculation tools and BIM by the
installers in the different countries.
• The European overview presents the combined results of all BIM users in the 6 countries. This summarised overview about BIM users is needed, as the
penetration of BIM is still very limited and the number of measurements per country is very low.
• In the country chapters more detailed information can be found about:
• different types of calculations that are requested by clients and done by installers;
• the usage of calculation software and tools;
• the familiarity with and (potential) usage of BIM;
• the attitude towards BIM.

BIM is relevant for all manufacturers of HVAC and plumbing products
regardless of their size
BIM is relevant only for installation companies working on big projects
BIM will lead to major changes in the way the different parties
collaborate in a construction project
Installers do not need to work in BIM, as they just have to install the
HVAC systems according to the drawings
There is an increasing need of BIM data from HVAC and plumbing
manufacturers
There is an increasing need of information from manufactures about
BIM as a planning method
We have enough knowledge about BIM and our role in BIM
