h ow much consideration have you given to living a Green lifestyle? Small lifestyle changes can make that can have a huge impact. Renters often think that there’s nothing that they can do – that

they’re limited by the building’s systems. It’s true – most apartment buildings were built in an era before being Green was an important part of life. Garbage chutes don’t separate for recyclables and compost, most light fixtures were intended for use with plain old incandescent light bulbs and nobody was designing with sustainable materials like bamboo and cork. But this doesn’t mean renters can’t take the responsibility of being Green personally. There are many steps to take to being a Green renter. Switch the old bulbs over to compact fluorescent light bulbs, halogen or LEDs when possible, especially if you’re considering changing up the lighting fixtures. Water conservation comes by letting the landlord know when there’s a leak, and you can even opt to change your shower head to a low-flow to conserve. While many property managers will listen and consider suggestions to Green up the building and there are already many companies that have taken the initiative to retrofit their buildings with new technologies and make changes like using low VOC paint, low-flow toilets and extensive recycling programs, there are still many things renters can do individually that will make a huge impact, from making conscious purchasing decisions to making sure to turn off lights and unplug appliances when not in use. Every little bit helps considering the massive number of renters in the city! While thinking Green, it’s time to find that apartment. We’re here to help. With Renters Guide in hand you’ll find the perfect place. Our magazine and website, homeTRADER.ca, offer the best selection of available apartments as well as informative articles and advice, making it easy to make your move!

Finding that perfect new place to call home can be a daunting task. There are a variety of factors that every person needs to consider when apartment hunting. Whether it’s affordability, included amenities or convenient access to shopping, prioritizing what’s important is key to choosing a home that’s right for you.

Rents are fi xed at a rate, which is at least 10% below the market rents for the area—water and heat included. Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis to ensure the applicants will be able to afford the rent and the power. The maximum income limits are set annually through Alberta Municipal Affairs and the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Safety2. The Melcor YMCA Village provides a safe and welcoming living environment. Featuring secured entrances, the Village gives tenants the peace of mind afforded by a secure home.

Included conveniences3. All suites at the Melcor YMCA Village come with a stove, fridge, microwave and window coverings. Other amenities include card-operated laundry, indoor and outdoor play areas, bicycle lockups and more. Limited underground parking is available for a monthly fee.

And lastly, a YMCA Family Resource Centre offers family programs and life enriching services for individuals and couples of all ages. The centre will also feature a cozy common area, confi dential interview room for counselling, and fl exible room spaces suitable for meetings, classes and workshops. Many of the meeting and program spaces in the Boyle Street Plaza can be booked for community or family functions.

Moving is a very personal thing and people who hire moving companies ask for varying levels of service.

Take packing, for example. Some clients want to pack their own items, while others prefer a turn key solution where the mover does it all. There are, of course, advantages to each approach, so it is important to choose what’s best for you.

TO PACK,moving

By Dan Hopkins

OR NOT TO PACK …

The PROfessiONAl PACKeRMost who choose to pack themselves do so because it saves money on the move. That is true only if the items make it from Point A to Point B in one piece. Moving companies will not be responsible for items damaged because of poor packing.

The most critical element in packing is taking into consideration how far and long the items will remain in the boxes and containers during transit. Consumers often underestimate just how much jostling their items will endure on the various highways and other roadways on their trip to your new home or business. Accessories such as lamps may seem to be packed well, but may shift inside the carton and break or chip as a result.

Professional packers have the experience to know exactly what is best for various categories of items, depending on the size and distance of the move, and they pack accordingly. They can also provide excellent advice on how to mark your boxes for ease of unpacking, and on the items to pack last and unpack first.

Having your mover do the packing offers you the peace of mind in knowing that if the unexpected happens, your possessions will be repaired or replaced.

The DiY PACKeR At Two Men and a Truck, trained packing professionals help clients with as much or as little of the packing and unpacking

as required, and we sell a full range of packing supplies. Those who are willing and capable of packing themselves need to consider the proper materials and containers that will help to ensure a successful move. There are also significant considerations to keep in mind, such as not packing explosive or flammable items in the general boxes.

Although you can obtain boxes from places like grocery stores, check with your mover, who may sell proper packing materials that will save you work and worry.

Some of the items you will need are tape dispensers, newsprint, markers, pads and bubble wrap – and there are many sizes and strengths of boxes available. There is a 1.5 cubic-foot box that is often referred to as a book or record box. It’s fairly small and is designed to hold small, heavy items like food jars or cans, flatware, CDs, etc. The next size up is a lamp or lampshade box, which is 3 cubic feet in size. The sizes go up from there, to 4.5 and 6 cubic feet for lighter objects such as pillows and stuffed animals.

These are just some of the moving materials that are available today. Whether you choose to pack your own items or have your mover do it, be sure you choose a company with a solid track record for providing topnotch service.

Dan Hopkins is chief operating officer, Two Men and a Truck Canada. For more information visit the website at twomenandatruck.ca

We’ve got your bases covered! The City of Edmonton is

wrapping up neighbourhood

reconstruction in 2012 with two neighbourhoods rebuilt, seven under construction and various Drainage Renewal, Neighbourhood Renewal and Great Neighbourhoods projects completed.

The City will invest $201 million in 2012 to renew and replace neighbourhood infrastructure and to enhance community connections and overall neighbourhood livability in 74 neighbourhoods across Edmonton. This investment contributes to the City’s long-term Building Great Neighbourhoods initiative.

Building Great Neighbourhoods coordinates three city programs:• Drainage Neighbourhood Renewal

(Financial Services & Utilities)• Neighbourhood Renewal

(Transportation Services)• Great Neighbourhoods Capital

Program (Community Services)

In 2012 reconstruction of Parkallen and West Jasper Place was completed, reconstruction of Capilano continued, and reconstruction in Canora, Dovercourt, King Edward Park, Terrace Heights, Windsor Park and Woodcroft got underway as a result of these programs.

Go with the flow. The Drainage Neighbourhood Renewal Program is investing $32 million in Edmonton neighbourhoods in 2012 to renew and replace deteriorated drainage infrastructure in neighbourhoods,

prior to pavement and sidewalk reconstruction.

“Coordinating drainage work ahead of roadwork and other projects ensures that our projects get done cost-effectively, on budget and on schedule, with as little disruption to residents as possible,” says John Cairns, Program Manager for Sewer Rehabilitation.

In addition to work in reconstructed neighbourhoods, Drainage Neighbourhood Renewal renewed sewer pipes in 19 neighbourhoods and conducted sewer inspections in communities scheduled for reconstruction in 2013 and 2014, working closely with utilities such as EPCOR and ATCO Gas.

Get on the move. The Neighbourhood Renewal Program is investing $153 million in neighbourhoods this year, which includes renewal and replacement of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and streetlights.

“Neighbourhood Renewal doesn’t just improve transportation infrastructure,” says Adam Laughlin, Director of Neighbourhood Renewal. “It improves and maintains quality of life and the way we move within our communities.”

In addition to neighbourhood reconstruction, Neighbourhood Renewal completed:

• Overlay in 8 neighbourhoods• Microsurfacing in two

neighbourhoods• Renewal of 18 km of collector

roads under the Collector Renewal Program

City continues building great neighbourhoods in 2012

Reconstruction began in six neighbourhoods; work completed in

Parkallen, West Jasper Place

lifestyleedmonton

• Alley light and streetlight LED and pole upgrades in 33 neighbourhoods

• One alley reconstruction (under 50-50 cost-share pilot)

Growing community. The Great Neighbourhoods Capital Program engages neighbourhoods to align City investments, such as shared use pathways, with community goals.

“Our goal is to enhance the livability and community connectivity of Edmonton’s neighbourhoods,” says Stephane Labonne, Director of Great Neighbourhoods. “Replacing roads, curbs, sidewalks and streetlights and repairing and maintaining the sewer system adds to Edmonton’s overall livability.”

In 2012, the Great Neighbourhoods Capital Program is investing $16 million in 12 neighbourhoods. This includes reconstruction efforts in older neighbourhoods and major projects like the 108 Street streetscape and revitalization efforts along 118 Avenue.

The City thanks neighbourhood residents and motorists travelling through neighbourhoods under reconstruction for their patience.

Cooler temperatures and snowfall are inevitable in Edmonton, but being well prepared can make the long winter months much easier when it comes to

city roads.

“We are ready for cold weather long before the first snowflake falls,” says Bob Dunford, Director of Roadway Maintenance. “Vehicle maintenance, preparation of road abrasives and operator training gets started during the summer so that when we do get that first taste of winter we can mobilize on a moment’s notice.”

During the course of an average winter, Roadway Maintenance will apply large quantities of abrasive material to city streets, including approximately:

• 116,000 tonnes of street sand (including 73,000 tonnes of recycled sand)• 16,000 tonnes of salt• 17,000 tonnes of rock chips•214,000 liters of calcium chloride (de-icer) to city roads

The abrasive material is mixed and piled at five district yards around Edmonton. Actual amounts applied will vary depending on precipitation and temperatures.

City staff must also ensure that its 240 pieces of equipment (131 sander/plows, 44 plows, 20 graders, 17 blowers, 20 sidewalk plows/sanders, six skid steers and two belt loaders) are in good repair and ready to go into service as needed.

As critical as it is for the City of Edmonton to be ready to deal with winter roads, it is just as important for residents to be prepared.

“One of the first things people should consider, particularly those who live on bus routes where seasonal parking bans apply, is where they might park their vehicles when a ban is declared,” says Dunford. “Whether that means

Winter can snowball if you’re not prepared

cleaning out the garage, clearing space on a parking pad or scouting out an alternate parking spot, in the long run it will pay off to have a plan.”

Citizens can keep informed as parking bans are declared/lifted by visiting edmonton.ca/winterroads. Neighbourhood blading cycles are also updated at this website, to help keep people informed of when to move their vehicles so that City crews can do the best job possible.

Citizens can also register for email alerts about parking bans and blading. The email notification system is the fastest, most efficient way to keep informed about roadway maintenance, but information is also available through the City’s website and 311, posted to Facebook and Twitter, and sent to local media outlets.

Additional online services include an interactive map/listing of community sand boxes and an interactive map for determining when crews will visit neighbourhoods during a blading cycle.

“Keeping well informed and being prepared for whatever winter might throw at us won’t make the season shorter, but it will definitely make everything much easier for both city crews and for citizens,” says Dunford. “I encourage residents to make the most of the communications tools we’ve created to keep informed about what’s happening on Edmonton roads over the next several months, and stay in the know about snow.”

Brightening up a room that doesn’t have a lot of natural

light can Be Both challenging and frustrating. if you haven’t

got the option of knocking down or opening up walls, or adding windows, then

i’ve got five different suggestions that you may find very useful.

1 “ArtificiAl” lightingI’ve said it before and I’ll say it

again; It’s all in the lighting. Of course this might seem like the most obvious solution, but many people go about it in the wrong way. When choosing a ceiling light, be sure to choose something that directs the light downwards or outwards, not upwards. If the lights directed towards the ceiling, it won’t do you much good. One of my favourite fixtures is the Medusa Chandelier; with it’s 30 exposed light bulbs, being short of lighting should never be an issue. It’s also 31.5 inches in diameter, covering a wide array of space.

When choosing a table or floor lamp with a shade, choose a light-coloured translucent shade that allows the light to shine through. If you’re blocking the light you need with a solid shade, what’s really the point of having it? Keep the base and swap the shade!

tips:-Use sheer drapery fabric over what windows you do have

-Increase the wattage of your light bulbs!-Have two to three watts of light per square foot

2 PAintI asked my fans on Facebook

and Twitter if they thought that light-coloured paint would lighten up a dark room. 99 per cent of them said yes, meaning 99 per cent of them were wrong! Paint can visually

5 Ways to Brighten Up a Room

by yanic simard

stylefile

brighten up a room (which is what our goal is), but not lighten up a room. you still won’t be able to read a book in that same room with no light regardless of if your walls are deep blue or bright white! believe it or not, a mid-tone beige colour is the best choice to keep the room feeling bright! Paint Colour Recommendation: benjamin Moore’s CC-396, “Stone Castle”.

3 WAllPAPerWallpaper can completely warm

up and brighten the look of a room. If you’re going to take this route, choose a wallpaper that has an element of metallic in it so that it can reflect the light from it. Wallpaper Recommendation: Graham & brown’s Kelly Hoppen “Hicks” Pattern, Colour: Taupe/Charcoal/Silver.

tip: If you have a window in the space, it’s ideal that you’d install the wallpaper at the wall directly across from it.

4reflective finishesMirrors, chrome, glass and

metallic are all designer favourite finishes to work with in a dull and dark room. Keep what light you do have bouncing around off of these pieces throughout the day and night.

tip: Create a focal wall with three large scale mirrors that go almost floor to ceiling – this will make the room feel much brighter and also much bigger

5furniture scAleThe size of the furniture plays a

big part in the illusion of adding brightness to a room. If you have heavy, dark, chunky furniture, then of course the room will feel that way. If you have light, open, clean-line furniture, then the room will feel much more airy and open. Typically

people purchase their furniture in a ‘set’. If you’re one of those people, try and replace the furniture that’s on the heavier side one piece at a time. Even just swapping one bulky black leather club chair for a slightly smaller light-coloured fabric upholstered slipper chair will make the world of a difference – you’ll see.Tip: If you have too much furniture or too many pieces in a room, it can make the feel more crowded and dark. Edit and eliminate what you can on your road to a brighter space!

Paint can visually

brighten up a room (which is what our goal is), but not lighten up a room. you still won’t be able to read a book in that same room with no light regardless of if your walls are deep blue or bright white! believe it or not, a mid-tone beige colour is the best choice to keep the room feeling bright!

5furniture scAleThe size of the furniture plays a

directions Set a rack over a baking sheet and line the

rack with two layers of paper towels. Spread the pumpkin purée over the paper towels and let drain for two hours, until the purée is fairly dry.

Preheat the oven to 450°F. Butter the bottom and side of a nine-inch springform pan. In a food processor, pulse the graham crackers until finely ground. Add the pecans and brown sugar and pulse again until finely ground. Add the melted butter and pulse just until incorporated. Press the crumbs onto the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake the crust for about six minutes, just until it is fragrant and lightly browned. Let the crust cool completely.

In the bowl of a standing electric mixer fitted with the paddle, beat the cream cheese until it is very smooth. In a small bowl, whisk the sugar with the salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. With the machine on, add the spiced sugar to the cream cheese and beat until creamy, scraping the bottom and side of the bowl repeatedly. Carefully add the drained pumpkin puree and beat until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well and scraping down the bowl between each addition. Beat in the heavy cream, lemon juice, and vanilla until the cheesecake mixture is smooth.

Pour the cheesecake mixture over the cooled crust and bake for 12 minutes. Lower the oven temperature to 225°F and bake the cheesecake for about three hours, until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the center registers 150°F; the centre will be very jiggly but not liquidy. Let the cheesecake cool on a rack, then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

Run a hot knife around the cheesecake and loosen the springform ring. Carefully remove the ring and transfer the cake to a plate. Using a warm knife, cut the cake into wedges and serve with the Pecan Praline Topping and a scoop of Cinnamon Ice Cream.

luscious and creamy, this decadent recipe for Pumpkin Cheesecake with Praline Sauce is a delicious combination of cream, sugar, eggs, pumpkin purée with an intoxicating blend of traditional pumpkin pie spices: ground cinnamon, cloves,

nutmeg and allspice. Once it’s baked, the cheesecake is then topped with a sweet buttery pecan praline topping. The key to this dessert’s success is threefold: draining the pumpkin purée on paper towel at the beginning, so it’s as thick as possible; ensuring that the cream cheese, eggs and cream are at room temperature before starting; and finally, beating the cheesecake mixture thoroughly so that the final result is lighter than air. Rest assured, the extra effort pays off. This Pumpkin Cheesecake is very light, not heavy at all, and wonderfully delicious. I’ll wager that you’ll never make a Pumpkin Pie again. As a final flourish, a dollop of whipped cream or scoop of homemade Cinnamon Ice Cream, would be pretty hard to resist!
