Collingwood Days Rain Out Festival lands on Rainiest Day of the Year by Paul Reid

The weather report said that twice as much rain fell between midnight and noon on Saturday, May 28th than the previous three months combined! Unfortunately for Collingwood Days 2016, that just happened to be the day of the festival. If you recall, it was easily the worst downpour since the beginning of the year and beyond.

The show did go on. People set up; the bouncy castle was bouncing; the dog show was showing; bravely, the musicians took to the waterlogged stage. Reminscent of the Titanic, they continued to play as the Collingwood Days ship sank into the puddles. The rain was just too much. Coming in from every direction, even those with umbrellas were getting soaked. Two hours after it began, the plug was pulled and for the first time in 13 years, the Collingwood Days Festival was officially rained out.

Family fun on June 17, 7 pm at Gaston Park by Bliss Zuniga-Rodgers

Food, fun and a free movie – what a dynamic combination to kick off summer!

On Friday, June 17 starting around 7 pm all are invited to gather at Gaston Park (Euclid Avenue near Joyce Street) and bring a picnic for yourself, your friend or your family and meet your neighbours. Dinner will be followed by games for the kids and then, once the sun sets, a free movie complete with free popcorn.

The event was sparked in part by Victor Toh, who is the chair of the Collingwood Neighbourhood School Parent Advisory Council. He wants his son to go to school in the kind of a neighbourhood where people stop to talk to each other.

At a recent idea jam, Victor Toh, Collingwood Neighbourhood School vice-principal Joel Levine and Collingwood Neighbourhood House executive director Jennifer Gray-Grant were discussing ways to increase community connectedness. The idea of a picnic in the park evolved into a picnic, games and movie night, which they hoped would draw even more people to take part.

“We’re pulling our school’s annual movie night from the school into the park,” Toh said. That way, they can help build connections between different facets of the community such as parents and students, community members and organizations, and the school and the wider community.

The Collingwood Community Policing Centre (CCPC) joined the group to offer one of its movie-in-a-park nights to coincide with the picnic. Collingwood Housing Co-op joined as a partner and then the Collingwood Branch of the Vancouver Public Library offered to do a pop-up library at the event.

Toh and a friend received a Neighbourhood Small Grant to cover the cost of posters to advertise the event, water bottles for attendees and prizes for the games for the children. The CCPC will provide the free popcorn. Toh and a friend have also organized music while Renfrew-Collingwood INTERactive will run the games.

Toh said they have made new community connections. “It’s about helping kids and families.”

Toh would like the neighbourhood where his son goes to school to be seen as a place beyond just a series of houses and apartments. “I want people to know they’re in a neighbourhood where everyone helps support each other and is a part of something.”

There are other benefits as well, according to CCPC’s Partap Sahota. “The stronger the community and the more people that get involved, the less crime there is. Getting to know your neighbours is the best form of crime prevention.”

The CCPC looks beyond the stereotypes of the role of police, to the role of friendly neighbours in building safe communities. When neighbours know each other, they will look out for each other, for example, by checking up on their houses when they are away.

Joel Levine of Collingwood Community School hopes that events like this one will connect his students to their neighbourhood so that they take more ownership and initiative towards improving it. He’s also glad to have an opportunity to plan a fun, family event.

All are invited to join the fun at Gaston Park on Friday, June 17 starting at 7 pm. Just bring a picnic, a blanket or chairs and a something to keep you warm as the sun goes down and the family-oriented movie starts.

Nootka Stream Murals – Art by the community, for the community There’s a new addition to the Lost Streams Murals at Nootka Elementary School. A team of community artists, including Carmen Rosen, Yoko Tomita and Suzo Hickey, guided hundreds of kindergarten to Grade 7 students, teachers and parents as they painted a stream along the Nootka playground. The Nootka Parent Advisory Committee had invited the artists to highlight the lost stream that once flowed across the school grounds.

Lost Streams Murals is a project of Still Moon Arts Society. For the past 15 years, Still Moon Arts has been dedicated to the restoration of Still Creek that flows through Renfrew Ravine. For the past few years, in celebration of chum salmon returning to spawn in Still Creek, Still Moon has collected stories and hopes for the ravine and the stream. The resulting collection of stories has been showcased by street murals, with the first street mural painted on Ravine Street, located at the south side of Slocan Park.

You can find more about Still Moon Arts Society’s Street Murals Project at http://stillmoon.org/projects/street-murals/

Wild Salmon Caravan - A celebration of salmon set for June 11, 2016!Still Moon Arts is excited be a partner in the second annual Wild Salmon Caravan and they are taking along a group of youth to build important connections between the arts, indigenous/non-ondigenous communities, and healthy land and water systems!

The Wild Salmon Caravan travels to hosting communities over a six-day journey from the headwaters of the Fraser River to the Salish Seas. Following the journey from June 6-11, the caravan ends in Vancouver with a large celebration on Saturday, June 11.

See detailed itineraries for travel and events from Mount Robson to Vancouver Island at https://wildsalmoncaravan.wordpress.com/working-group/ and follow them on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/wildsalmoncaravan/.

If you can’t join in on the journey, come to the parade and festival in Vancouver on Saturday, June 11. The travellers will arrive at Creekside Park Near Science World around 11 am and parade to Crab Park following welcoming, speakers, singing and drumming.

Romeo e Giulietta: Shakespeare in ItalianIn Celebration of Italian Heritage Month at Il Centro by Angela Clarke

June is Italian Heritage month and Il Cento has a full month of scheduled events in honour of the Italian contribution to the cultural life of Vancouver. These events include wine tastings, jazz and opera concerts, soccer with the Whitecaps, Il Mercato (the Italian market), and Italian movies in the park.

One new addition to this annual event is a bilingual production of Romeo e Giulietta produced and performed by the Cultural Centre’s new theatre group the Il Centro Players.

The artistic director in charge of production is Nicole Riglietti. Riglietti comes to Il Centro with extensive experience in theatre, film and television. While she plays the title role of Giulietta in this performance, her artistic goals have always been in the area of theatre production. in future theatrical performances, she aims to devote herself entirely to directing.

Riglietti, who herself is of Italian heritage, believed that any theatre organization associated with Il Centro should produce a bilingual (Italian and English) productions. She felt that it was fitting for the very romantic and well-known Romeo e Giulietta by Shakespeare to be their first production since it has always been one of her favourite plays from childhood.

During a recent trip to Italy Riglietti discovered an excellent Italian translation of this play, and this confirmed her decision to make this production a bilingual one.

In addition, after immersing herself in the Italian text, she found that the Italian dialogue could be seamlessly introduced into the staging without losing context and continuity in the plot. There is nothing that will be lost in translation for audiences when half the play is spoken in Italian. The bilingualism of the text works well, and is culturally significant, on many levels. First, Romeo e Giulietta is Shakespeare’s best-known Italian play. There are 13 plays that Shakespeare located in Italy. In fact, scholars have argued that Shakespeare himself had an in-depth knowledge of Italian history and culture. So many social and historical realities found within his Italian plays are entirely accurate. Therefore, it has been argued that Shakespeare must have had a first-hand knowledge of Italian historical events and geography.

The most significant of Shakespeare’s insights found in Romeo e Giulietta is the role of Friar Lawrence as peacekeeper between the warring families. In Renaissance Italy monks in the Franciscan Order tried desperately to maintain the peace in the politically fractured

city states of Northern Italy. As well, the original story of Romeo e Giulietta was written in Italian in 1531 by the Venetian author Luigi Da Porto. Shakespeare must have had a familiarity with Da Porto’s work. The other decision to make the production bilingual resides in the nature of the play’s cast. Everyone who contributes to the Il Centro players has an immigrant background. Many troupe members, like Nicole herself, are second- and third-generation Italian Canadians, in other words the children and grandchildren of Italian immigrants. Each one of them grew up speaking Italian or a dialect of it in their homes.

For these young people Italian is often spoken interchangeably with English in their daily lives. Therefore, a bilingual theatre matches the cultural reality of the actors participating in it and the larger community it serves. As Nicole Riglietti describes it, “being Italian-Canadian means to be both Italian and Canadian.” It is our hope in future productions to continue to acknowledge this cultural duality. Romeo e Giulietta is the perfect introduction to this concept: while it might be an English play fundamentally, it

Orphan Train by Christina Baker KleinFoster teen Molly is performing community service work for elderly widow Vivian. As they go through Vivian’s cluttered attic, they discover that their lives have much in common. When Vivian was a girl, she was taken to a new life on an orphan train. These trains carried children to adoptive families from the mid-nineteenth century to the start of the Great Depression. Kline illuminates a largely hidden chapter of American history, while portraying the coming-of-age of two resilient young women.

All She Was Worth by Miyuki MiyabeWhen his fiancée disappears, Jun Kurisaka turns to his uncle, homicide inspector Shunsuke Honmawho, for help in locating the real Shoko Sekine, and determining the identity of the woman who had so lightly stepped out of her shoes and vanished without a trace. The horror in this beautifully fashioned tale of stolen identity lies not in the cold-blooded crimes but in the motive - a desperate hunger for consumer goods.

Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris PilkingtonFollowing an Australian government edict in 1931, black and mixed-race children were gathered up and brought to settlements where they were to be disciplined to forget their aboriginal heritage, and taught to be culturally white. The three sisters, Molly, Gracie, and Daisy quickly plan an escape from the Moore River Native Settlement with its harsh life. The girls head for the nearby rabbit-proof fence that stretches over 1,000 miles through the desert in search of their home.

still represents a deep, rich and longstanding Italian tradition.

This perfectly represents the cultural life at Il Centro, all of us live in contemporary Vancouver, but within each one of us there resides a significant Italian historic tradition informing and shaping our cultural expression.

The following is a paid advertisement by Adrian Dix, MLA for Vancouver/Kingsway

Dear Neighbours,

A great send off to Eileen Zheng!

A big thanks to everyone who came out May 17th to send off Eileen Zheng on her way across Canada. Eileen is a remarkable young Vancouver-Kingsway constituent who is raising funds and awareness for the Canadian Transplant Association by biking across the country.

Eight years ago Eileen’s mother was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease, but declined to take Eileen’s kidney out of fear for the changes it may bring to Eileen’s life. Eileen was a student at Windermere Secondary at the time. Today, a mere year after their successful transplant surgeries, Eileen and her mother are stepping out to share their life-changing story of recovery. There are more than 4,500 people are on the wait list for organ transplants in Canada. Despite the rising need, there are not enough Canadians have made plans to donate.

Eileen’s incredible journey began in Victoria on May 16th and will end in St. John’s, Newfoundland!

If you would like to donate to her important cause, please visit www.giftfromwithin.ca

The Seniors Connection

Monday Fun Group activities by Suzanne Liddle

Do you have an idea for an activity that you’d like to see for seniors at Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH)? We’d love to hear from you!

Every Monday afternoon the Monday Fun day group gets together for activities, games and workshops that are focused on health and wellness, interculturalism, creativity and fun! The program is open to everyone and costs $2.50 with snacks provided.

The first Monday of every month is free bingo and birthday cake! Join the celebration and get to know some new friends. Monthly bulletins are available at reception and posted on the seniors board in CNH.

This month there will be two workshops on how to prevent seniors from falling down on June 13 and 20. Nick Chapman, a kinesiology student at Simon Fraser University, has put together a fall prevention exercise program for seniors. He focuses on specific muscle groups to build physical resistance to protect injuries. Nick came to do a workshop in April and it was so popular that he is doing two more sessions—so don’t miss out! The summer months will be packed with activities and trips for seniors to get to know one another and explore our beautiful city together. The group has already enjoyed trips to Steveston and Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta.

This month the group will keep it local and check out Granville Island

on Monday, June 27. This trip is open to everyone; sign up at CNH reception to secure your place. Transportation costs $6. The bus leaves CNH at 10:30 am and will return by 2 pm.

The next trip will be on July 11 when the group will travel to Squamish for the day! Join a drive on the stunning Sea to Sky highway and stop at Shannon Falls for a walk before popping into town.

If you’d like to give feedback or contribute to planning for seniors activities please come along to the next seniors advisory group meeting on June 2 at 1:15 pm. Each Thursday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 am, Collingwood seniors get together to socialize and chat over refreshments at their weekly coffee social. This group is always happy to welcome new members.

Do you like to cook at home or go out to eat? Many people like to go out to eat. When you go to a restaurant, do you like to try new foods? What are your favourite kinds of restaurants?

Many of my students have told me that they would like to try new restaurants, but they are scared. They don’t know what to order. They don’t know how to read the menu or talk to the waiter/waitress. They say it is easier just to go to a restaurant where they speak the same language. Do you feel this way?

In Vancouver there are so many kinds of restaurants. There is food from all over the world. If you try something new, you might love it! Below are some ideas to help you in a new restaurant. I hope they will help you.

In the Restaurant

• The host (man) or hostess (woman) will usually be in the front. He or she will ask you how many people you are with and bring you to your table. The host/ess will give you a menu (a list of food).• In very small restaurants, there may not be a host/hostess.• The waiter (man) or waitress (woman) will take your order (ask you what you want to eat). They usually first ask if you want anything to drink. This person is also called a server.• If you don’t know what you want, you can ask, “What do you recommend?” The server will tell you what he/she thinks is good. You can also ask, “Do you have any specials?”• If you don’t understand something on the menu, ask your server. Just say, “Could you tell me what this is, please?”• After you get your food the server will often ask, “Is everything okay?” or “How is everything?” • When you want to pay, ask your server for the bill. It is also called the cheque. You can say, “Can we get the bill, please?”• Giving a tip (extra money for the server) of 15% is normal. You can give 20% for very good service.• Fast food restaurants do not have a host or hostess. You order at the front and find your own seat. Fast food means food that is made quickly and can be taken to go (take to eat somewhere else). They don’t usually use real plates or utensils (fork, spoon, knife).
