Interested in specializing or launch-ing a career in green building? With advantages like money-saved from reduced energy use, green building is in demand. Take a look at these green building facts:
• Green buildings generate an aver-age increase of 7.5 percent in a building’s value and a 6.6 percent improvement in return on investment, while decreasing operating costs by 8 to 9 percent, according to McGraw-Hill Construction.
• Higher revenue due to higher rents and occupancy rates. Vacancy rates of green buildings are lower than
existing buildings. The CoStar Group found that LEED-certified buildings occupancy rate are 92 percent versus 87 percent for traditional buildings.
• Lower operating costs by reducing waste output and energy consumption. The Environmental Protection Agency found that green buildings with a recycling focus can reduce waste output by 90 percent and use 30 percent less energy, which equates to a five percent increase in net operating income.
• Attract and retain quality tenants. Improved indoor air quality in green buildings result in reduced absentee-ism, and possibly higher productivity
that could increase sales. Green buildings also make it possible to have government tenants.
• Better insurance risk. Green buildings
suffer fewer losses and are safer to insure because of the commissioning process required to become LEED certified.

Under DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, these states will implement programs that lower energy use and create green jobs locally:
Delaware - $9,593,500 awarded Reduce fossil fuel emissions, decrease overall energy use, and improve energy efficiency statewide.
Hawaii - $9,593,500 awarded Enhance energy efficiency in the buildings sector and deploy renewable energy technologies in state buildings.
Iowa - $9,593,500 awarded Improve energy efficiency and promote the use of renewable energy across the state’s economic sectors.
Indiana - $14,052,400 awarded Help the state’s local communities, small businesses, non-profits, and others reduce their energy consumption.
Massachusetts - $14,752,100 awardedAdvance efficiency and conservation goals at the community level.
Oklahoma - $9,593,300 awarded Support various energy efficiency and
renewable energy projects.
Tennessee - $13,818,200 awardedEnhance energy efficiency and promote the use of renewable energy across the state’s economic sectors.
Vermont - $9,593,500 awarded Enhance energy efficiency and expand the use of renewable energy at the state and local level.

A $535 million federal loan guarantee granted to California solar-panel maker Solyndra Inc. is part of a larger government effort that, according to U.S. Secretary Steven Chu, will spur creation of jobs this year and next.
“The jobs will keep coming,” Chu said, speaking at a con-struction site southeast of San Francisco, where Solyndra Inc. broke ground on a solar-panel factory expected to create up to 3,000 construction jobs and 1,000 long-term jobs.
Solyndra’s new plant, being built near an existing plant, is designed to produce 500 mega-watts worth of solar panels a year, enough to power about 24,000 homes. In addition to new construction and manufacturing jobs, Solyndra’s factory and oth-ers like it will help create other jobs, such as solar-panel instal-lation jobs, Chu said
Vice President Joseph Biden concurred, in remarks beamed
by satellite to the ground-breaking ceremony, saying Solyndra’s manufacturing jobs “won’t be exported.”
Solyndra Chief Executive Chris Gronet said the new plant will allow the company
to fill customer orders for more than $2 billion of panels, “while making a positive impact on the world’s energy and environ-mental needs.”Source: www.nasdaq.com

9 States Awarded “Green” Money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
In September 2009, the Political Econo-my Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Ammherst released a new report titled Green Recovery: A Program to Create Good Jobs and Start Building a Low-Carbon Economy. The main focus of the report was a short-term clean energy and jobs program support-ed by a green stimulus package.
The short-term $100 billion economic recovery package would:
Create nearly four times more •total jobs than spending the same amount of money within the oil industry, and 300,000 more jobs than a similar amount of spending directed toward household con-sumption.
Create roughly triple the number •of good jobs - paying at least $16 dollars an hour - as spending the same amount of money within the oil industry.
Reduce the unemployment rate •to 4.4 percent from 5.7 percent (calculated within the framework of U.S. labor market conditions in July 2008).
Bolster employment especially in •construction and manufacturing. Construction employment has fallen from 8 million to 7.2 million jobs over the past two years due to the housing bubble collapse. The Green Recovery program can, at the least, bring back these lost 800,000 con-struction jobs.

Solar road Panels - is this the Way of the Future?
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Solar Roadways™ a $100,000 research contract on August 25, 2009 to develop a prototype for the first Solar Road Panel.
Solar Road Panels include structurally-engineered solar panels that can be driven upon. The goal is to replace all current petroleum-based asphalt roads, parking lots, and driveways with Solar Road Panels that collect and store solar energy to be used by homes and businesses.
The solar road technology will:

BoB’s Big Boy of BurBank, the oldest remaining BoB’s restaurant in the u.s., has a new 26 kw Canadian solar photovoltaiC panel system. Commemorating 60 years of operation By going “green,” the historiC restaurant hosted an event to dediCate the new system.
Canadian Solar Inc. (“Canadian Solar”) (NASDAQ: CSIQ), HelioPower and Bob’s Big Boy of Burbank were joined by Bill Nye, Burbank Mayor and other local dignitaries. The solar power system is installed on the large steel carport structure and a flat commercial roof above the neighboring Starbucks. It was designed and installed by HelioPower.
The restaurant is now generating a portion of its own electricity from a solar power system consisting of 132 Canadian Solar CS6P 200 Modules and two SMA inverters, a Sunny
Boy 6000US and a Sunny Boy 3000US. Energy generation is monitored by an SMA Sunny WebBox and graphically displayed through the SMA Sunny Portal system. The Bob’s solar power system will produce 39 MWh (mega watt hours) of electricity a year. This is enough green energy to provide the following benefits:
•Offsettheelectricaldemand of about seven homes
•TheeliminationofCO2offsets 57,000 miles driven per year and the equivalent
of 78 trees planted and carbon sequestered for the life of those trees
•Otherenvironmentaltechnologies applied at Bob’s this year include recycling and energy efficient lighting
“We’ve brought Bob into the 21st century,” said owner Philip MacDonald. “Solar technology is a viable option for powering retail buildings. Bob is setting an example for the community and our fans worldwide by employing solar power to generate a portion of the electricity used by the restaurant.”
