from Sweden to attend the Bedford Rally held by Dave Phillips Looks like Irsquove discovered another great photographer

The hunter in the photograph is Michiel Bil who lives in Holland I met Michiel and his wife Danielle Godiva several years ago during my first metal detecting trips to the UK

Michiel is the type of relic hunter thatrsquos ready to go at sun up and doesnrsquot stop even if the sun goes down Hersquos just keeps on going and going digging and digging He has made some fantastic discoveries too

Michael Lander below is also an avid relic hunter 2 years ago he spent several hours digging a silver coin from underneath a tree root

Bill MacCallum USHere are my ldquobestrdquo river finds the item on the top right appears to be a billet with T stamped on the bottom The nickel is just 1964 The item is metal with the words one dime on it and some kind of art work


Who were the DurotrigesThe Durotriges were one of the Celtic tribes living in Britain prior to the Roman invasion The tribe lived in modern Dorset south Wiltshire south Somerset and Devon east of the River Axe

Durotriges were more a tribal confederation than a tribe They were one of the groups that issued coinage before the Roman conquest

These coins were rather simple and had no inscriptions and thus no names of coin-issuers can be known let alone evidence about monarchs or rulers Nevertheless the Durotriges presented a settled society based in the farming of lands surrounded and controlled by strong hill forts that were still in use in 43 AD Maiden Castle is a preserved example of one of these hill forts

The total of two hoards found by Tont Hunt and David Green were only 10 yds apart in the same field

was 75 Durotrigian Celtic Silver Staters that have been buried for some 2000 years until we rescued them for people to enjoy in a museum hopefully

Tony Hunt and David Green have had some great times in the past discovering artifacts of past civilizations These 2 days were no exception

While digging in Georgian battlefields one-hundred-fourteen years after the great

American Civil War was settled I handled the relics once used to win that ghastly struggle Bits and chunks of metals which had been dropped thrown and spun off course filled my find-bag as small mementos of my dayrsquos digging efforts That evening as I spread them onto a kitchen table I was compelled to think about the lives the loved ones and the torn flesh of those men who stepped up to defend such a noble cause as freedom I do not mean freedom for the rich and blessed but for the lowliest of position-holders suffering on the outer edges of human fray For hours I sat comfortable and warm with coffee and slippers pondering the possible scenarios behind buckles buttons shrapnel and projectiles Each piece

strove to speak clearly to tell its ownerrsquos story but timersquos darkened glass refused passage leaving only my imagination However one message did get through to this twentieth century earthling Mental images of swords horses cannon sons and the tears of mothers who loved them were heaved into vats with documents bearing great causes and shaken violently beyond human endurance Once the shaking ceased the barrels of humanity were dumped upon the soils of Americarsquos farms and forests allowing the fortunate who survived to crawl away and heal Then I began to ponder the phrase Emancipation Proclamation I knew from that moment forward that I would not honor only the man who cosigned the cause with his life in a darkened theater but of all who gave those powerful words authority Forever I will think not only of the men but of the women waiting to bind

their wounds of the calloused knees of the prayerful and of the children watching for father or brother to come marching home I will think of throngs of people of herds and flocks of animal flesh of mountainous bolts of textiles mutilated trees broken glass and legions of forsaken dreams packed into rows of cannon and blasted at the darkness As that revelational evening came to an end the little trophies in my possession had lost their luster for my selfish cause leaving me with a bit of shame for taking so long to comprehend what that war truly and justly meant But I saw something in those relics something that I had failed to realize from history books I saw that our great union had been preserved by and through such a sacrificial and honorable action as the Civil War

Now I understand that the great document was not ratified with flow of ink or clack of gavel Redeemed through baptism it was plunged beneath the surface of tears sweat and blood of our brothers and sisters represented by the little battle items I held in my hands

Anyway to make a short story longer I ended up with a silver dime trifecta plus one My take for the day was four silver dimes 1909 Barber 1941 merc 1940d merc and a 1964 Rosey Dug three wheats 1911 1930 and 1944 Then a total of $215 in clad Not too shabby for a short hunt at a new spot The ground is really dry I think this place might produce even more when the ground is saturated Great dayThanks Dave

This dig started when Dan kindly invited me (Dean) and Scott for a day out detecting on one of his farms Like any day out detecting we didnrsquot know what was going to unfold

We arrived at the farm about 8am made a quick brew and got kitted up for the day Weather forecast was overcast but dry Dan uses the CTX 3030 and his settings for the day was ( open screen manual sensitivity up to 29 response smooth and 50 conductive tone) Me and Scott both use the Deus my setting was program 1 and 2 tone and Scott was on Deus fast

We followed Dan through the farm and on to a ploughed field We detected for about an hour digging up a few coppers and bits and bobs then Dan shouted out hammered coin Dan had found the first hammered coin of the day ( Henry 11 half cut ) our spirits was up now and not long after ( about 30 mins ) I found my first hammered coin (Edward 1 penny ) in the next 2 hours i dug up 2 more hammered coins (Elizabeth 1 three pence and a Henry 11 short cross half ) it was developing in to a very productive day

We decided to move to the field next door to us About an hour had gone with not many signals and then Dan dug up his 2nd hammered coin ( eddy penny half cut ) shortly after I found my 4th hammered coin ( Elizabeth 1 half groat ) it was Scottrsquos turn now and he dug up another hammered coin ( Edward 1 penny ) we detected on for another hour before going back to the car for lunch and a drink WOW what a day so far ( 7 hammereds )

We made our way back to the last field and decided to follow the edge of the field all the way around next to a path way 2 Hours had gone by with only a few modern coins found The day was coming to a end and out of the blue Dan shouted GOLD GOLD GOLD Me and Scott ran over and was amazed and so glad we was there to witness this beautiful item dug up and saved from the plough ( Saxon gold stud mount ) we detected for another hour and then made our way back to the car defiantly a day to remember I am the one in the middle

Welcome to Bluegrass Artifacts Irsquom Bruce Hudson and Irsquove been hunting and collecting artifacts most of my life around the Kentucky area since 1974

I have been very fortunate to have seen and studied many fine examples I have many personal finds that have been documented and I still get a adrenaline rush every time Irsquove made a find

The Prospectorsrsquo Home Club is based in Parramatta a western suburb of Sydney Australia and was founded in 1981

We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 730pm in the Parramatta Band Club Hall Jubilee Lane (off Marion Street) Harris Park

Members have many interests and expertise particularly in metal detecting for gold coins and relics

A feature of Club Life is the monthly weekend outings to various gold and gem areas as well as beach detecting Longer trips are also organized to gold and gem areas in Australia

Club members are expert in many fields of endeavor including gold panning and associated skills including the manufacture of various devices to enhance your prospecting opportunities
