Free Summer Lunch Program

COOS BAY — The Bay Area Hospital, Kids’ Hope Center has announced that Gib’s RV Superstore has donated a new trailer to use as a raffle item with proceeds to benefit the Center.

The Kids’ Hope Center is the Child Abuse Intervention Center for Coos County and operates almost entirely on grants and private donations. Coos County has one of the highest rates of abuse per capita in the state of Oregon.

The raffle is for a 2018 20-foot Starcraft Comet Mini 16KS trailer valued at $20,417. Tickets are $10 each and the drawing will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Gib’s. Tickets can be purchased at: Gib’s RV Superstore; Oregon Pacific Bank; Bay Area Hospital Gift Shop, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-noon.

For additional information and other locations, call Kids’ Hope Center at 541-266-8806.

One of the valuable services available in the community for children who have been abused has been the Kids’ Hope Center, formerly the Child Abuse Intervention Center. At the Center, children who may have been abused are interviewed in a “kid friendly” and trauma informed environment to determine if they have been the victim of abuse and to help obtain for them the services they need to overcome the abuse and associated trauma. Last year in Coos County, 350 children were inter-viewed and received services through the Center. Statistics show that most abuse goes unreported.

BANDON - Abstract painters Jon Leach and Merv Cole, along with Humbug Mountain Weavers and Spinners will be on display through Sept. 30 at the Bandon Library Art Gallery, 1204 11th St. SW in City Park.

Leach and Cole bring a collection of abstracts to Bandon Library Art Gallery. Working in both acrylic and watercolors, they are well-matched in their aesthetic and equally strong in the execution of their ideas.

In this collection, Cole's colors are vivid,

the brush strokes bold. His canvases crackle with energy. Leach's paint is liquid. Deep tones swim in pools from which brighter colors dreamily rise and recede. The work of both art-ists is brilliantly alive.

In the cases are works from Humbug Mountain Weavers and Spinners, who hand spin, dye and weave textiles into wearable and wall art. Their group includes felters, knitters and other workers in fiber.

BANDON - Visitors can strike gold at the Bandon Historical Society Museum three Sundays this summer, through the support of a business sponsor, The Sunset Motel, and the Coquille Tribal Community Fund.

A gold panning station will be set up out-side the museum from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 18 and again Sept. 1, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

For kids visiting the museum, the first pan of gravel is free. Adults can pan for $5 a pan and kids can pan again for $3 a pan. Museum admission is free on Sundays.

The goal is to give kids the “gold panning bug,” said Museum Director Gayle Nix. “If they learn how to do it in a controlled environ-ment, they can take the skill with them to search the streams.”

Every young panner takes home a few gold flakes courtesy of The Sunset Motel. “We refer to the gold we salt the pans with as ‘Sunset Gold,’” said museum volunteer Jim Proehl. Funds from a Coquille Tribal Community Fund grant for educational materials purchased the equipment used for the program.

"Free Summer Sundays" at the Bandon Museum are courtesy of First Interstate Bank and the Best Western Inn at Face Rock and continue through the Cranberry Festival week-end.

The Bandon Historical Society Museum is located at the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Fillmore Avenue and is open in the summer every day, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
