Quando os verbos terminarem em y e forem precedidos de consoante sonora, troca-se y por ied:

To study – studied

To cry – cried

Quando os verbos terminarem em c+v+c( consoante+vogal+consoante), dobra-se a última consoante e acrescenta-se ed:

To stop – stopped

To permit – permitted

Obs: Verbos como: To develop

To open

To listen

Não têm a consoante dobrada, pois a última sílaba não é tônica.
