1: Aquatic Invasive SpeciesRich Rezanka, Invasive Species Specialist, MN Department of Natural ResourcesInvasive species have the potential to cause harm to Minnesota’s natural resources, and their spread continues around the state. This talk will focus on those invasive species that pose the greatest threat to lakes in NE Minnesota and discuss local efforts to prevent the spread to area lakes. Get motivated to take action by hearing from local lake association president Russ Wedl and the steps taken to protect their lake.

2: Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources in Northern MinnesotaDr. Robert Conzemius, Senior Atmospheric Scientist, WindLogics Inc.How will global climate change affect northern Minnesota’s lakes and other water resources? The goals of this class will be to compare anthropogenic impacts with natural variability, examine warming that has already been observed locally, and to provide a summary of climate model predictions for northern Minnesota’s hydrology.

3: Conservation Easements for the Private LandownerFrancis “Fitz” Fitzgerald, Director of Conservation – Northern Region, Minnesota Land TrustJust what is a Land Trust? Get an introduction to conservation easements for the landowner who is curious about what the process entails and how to go about establishing an easement on their property. Discover the purpose, what it means for the landowner, and potential tax benefits. Examples of existing projects will be examined.

4: Fishing EvolutionsSean Colter, Fishing Professional, Sunrise Guide ServiceHow technology and regulation have changed the sport of fishing, for the positive! We will also discuss new techniques to increase your catch rate while on the water.

5: Good Habitat Means Good FishingTim Goeman, Regional Fisheries Manager, MN Department of Natural ResourcesGood habitat, including clean water, is essential to healthy, sustainable fish populations. Human activities on the lakeshore and in the watershed have a direct effect on the quality of fish habitat and fish populations. Good habitat

means minimal fisheries management; degraded habitat translates to expensive, on-going management. Guest speaker and local resort owner Kim Jamtgaard will share the positive steps they’ve taken to ensure good habitat and good fishing.

6: Itasca County’s Lakes & the Quality of Our WatersDr. John A. Downing, Professor of Limnology, Iowa State University, and Adjunct Professor, Itasca Community CollegeWe will discuss the wonderful range of lakes in Itasca County, their water quality, and recent work to determine their condition. 12: Watershed Cycling of Mercury: Lessons Learned From Research in Northern MinnesotaRandy Kolka, Team Leader and Research Soil Scientist, USDA Forest Service Northern Research StationMercury is of great concern in the environment because it biomagnifies in the aquatic food chain. Over the past 15 years Dr. Randy Kolka and colleagues have conducted research to understand mercury cycles. Randy will discuss these studies and the current state of knowledge on mercury pollution in northern Minnesota.

NB: Fun with Neotropical Birds TourHarry Hutchins, Natural Resources/Forestry Instructor, Itasca Community CollegeTake a look at the neotropical bird life at the peak of migration on the riparian areas of the Mississippi River, as well those continental migrants that have staked out a nesting site. We will visit the river at KAXE and the Forest History Center. Lots of song and color!

HR: Harvesting the Rain TourMary Blickenderfer, Water Resources Educator, University of Minn. ExtensionThree rain gardens were constructed in Grand Rapids on three very different soils with three different goals in mind. We will visit them all as they spring into action for the season, explore how they function, and see how beautiful they can be. Everyone can rain garden!

CLASSESDon Shelby, Former Anchor, WCCO-TVDon Shelby was a news anchor for WCCO-TV in the Twin Cities for 32 years.

He is considered the most honored and decorated local television journalist in the country. He has won three national Emmys and several national awards. Don was inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2008 and was named Distinguished Minnesotan in 2010. Don has a unique perspective on water after reporting from locations spanning the globe. He continues to report on environmental and science issues in his

weekly column for the online newspaper MinnPost. He is a frequent guest speaker and college lecturer on the subjects of alternative energy, climate change, the environment, ecology, and the new economy of energy efficiency.Don will give a keynote presentation on his global view of water and its importance to economies large and small. He will address northern Minnesota’s lakes, rivers and ground water and why it’s critical to sustain these valuable resources. He will share his values on water conservation, including his personal actions to reuse water in his current home and the new LEED Platinum/Minnesota GreenStar Gold house he is currently building.
