WINTER LEARNING PROGRAM 2019 The Winter Learning Program (WLP) is a hands-on, experiential learning program where students take a variety of interest-generated courses. This program, which lasts two weeks in January, is a learning environment in which students attend workshops, internships, week-long seminars, and participate in "mobile classrooms" on topics such as Physics in Hollywood, Taste of Atlanta Culture, and Life Skills 101. These activities vary each year. Students choose a class from the course outline/schedule, then they spend the week learning about their topic. Your Winter Learning 2019 is attached. This is for you to review and discuss. You will be notified when registration opens. (Usually around the first week of November) Registration is first come, first served. Seminar Title: Holocaust History 1 Instructor(s): Nellie Jackson

Seminar Description: The course stresses the historical study of the Holocaust through the

reading of Night by Elie Wiesel, The Diary of Anne Frank, films such as The Devil’s

Arithmetic, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Anne B. Real a modern telling of Anne Frank’s

Life and excerpts from other film based on the Holocaust. Students study the perpetrators, the

victims and intended victims, and also the "bystanders", of the Holocaust and the ideology, the

administrative systems, and the general context of the 1930's and 1940's. We visit the Breman

Museum in downtown Atlanta for a tour and the Museum of Holocaust Education in

Kennesaw. The materials used include accounts by survivors, and historians. Students view

historical documents at the perspective museums. Curriculum Connection: English/History: reading and composition Elective Credit: .5 Learner Goal(s): Students will read and view the stories of survivors of the Holocaust. They will understand the role that literature and film play in translating historical events.

Seminar Title: Short Film Challenge (Week 1)

Instructor(s): Eric Khong

Seminar Description: Students will collaborate to create an independent short film, focusing on learning

techniques related to storytelling, screenplay writing, and cinematography. Students will be looking at examples

of other films and creating an original work within one week, going through the stages of drafting, filming, and

editing to create a finished product by the week’s end. Speakers from the local film and animation industry in

Atlanta will be coming to speak about filmmaking techniques and storyboarding.

Curriculum Connection: Storytelling, Creative Expression, Visual Communication, Cinematography,

Composition, New Media Literacy, Collaboration & Teamwork

Learner Goal(s): To get students comfortable behind and in front of the camera, studying filmmaking

Seminar Description: The purpose of this seminar is to assist the Theatre Director and Technical Theatre Director in creating backdrops and props for the spring production of Shrek! The Musial. Curriculum Connection: Painting, drawing, sculpting with mixed media, mural preparation and painting, teamwork, social curriculum. Learner Goal(s): To expand students’ realm of skills and knowledge beyond the typical scope of art class to include other creative forms of expression such as music/drama and the preparation and execution that is involved in making those forms become reality. Students will create props for the musical. Students will create large scale set elements. Students will work as a group.

Seminar Title: West Virginia Ski Trip/Outdoor Sports Instructor(s): Hayley Adams & Michael Smith

Seminar Description: Students will experience a ski trip at the Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia during the first week of Winter Learning. Snowshoe Mountain boasts a variety of trails for skiers of all experiences. It’s its own little village stocked with shops, restaurants, night skiing, snow tubing, and more. We will be staying in a chalet on the top of the mountain. The lodge is ski in/ski out. Curriculum Connection: Students will learn a variety of skills including: Personal finance, orienteering, mountain safety, winter weather, and physics. Learner Goal(s): 1. Learn to dress and pack appropriately for outdoor winter activities. 2. Orienteering 3. Mountain safety. 4. Application of physics to skiing 5. Basic winter weather processes

Seminar Description: Students will be exposed to a variety of table top and board games. They will be introduced to at least two new games a day and have the chance to bring in other games they may like to share. Curriculum Connection: Math, Probability, and Sportsmanship.

Learner Goal(s): Learn new games and be able to teach to others how to play games they have learned. Positive social interaction and good sportsmanship.

Seminar Title: Taste of Culture in Atlanta

Instructor(s): Shilpee Kathuria & Angela White

Seminar Description: Atlanta is one of the most diverse and multicultural cities of the South. On this winter learning excursion, students will learn about the many sites, cultures & religions in Atlanta as well as visit diverse locations around the city including but not limited to: the BAPS Hindu Temple of Atlanta, the Carlos Museum, the Greek Orthodox Church of Atlanta, the Latin American Cultural Center (Atlanta Outreach), as well as Africa Atlanta and/ or Chinatown. After each site visit, we will not only enjoy the food of the region out or around the city, but also return to school and visit our destinations cinematically on days where time allows.

Curriculum Connection: World History; Cultural Diversity; Language

Learner Goal(s): This trip is part of our inclusive education goal to help students become more worldly as well as culturally-sensitive citizens, and more globally competent stewards of the world they live in. In addition, students will be exposed to myriad traditions, customs, histories, clothing and foods of the site locations they visit.

During this program, the students will spend the first three days traveling to visit a few of these gems located in our city. Our first stop on Monday will be to the Decatur Glassblowing Studio where each student will be making a hand-blown glass cup. On Tuesday, we will head to the Center for Puppetry Arts to take a guided tour of their Jim Henson and Worlds of Puppetry collection. Wednesday will be spent at the Georgia Tech Robert C. Williams Paper Museum where each student will participate in an extensive papermaking workshop. The final two days will be spent in the MSA Art Studio. Students will create their own art inspired by all they experienced on their adventures. Curriculum Connection: The students will learn the science and history behind glass and paper making. They will also learn a connection between art, literature and theater. Learner Goal(s): Students will be exposed to multiple types of artistic expression and will learn different art making techniques. The students will also plan and create their own artist creations in the art medium of their choice.

Seminar Title: Holocaust History 1 Instructor(s): Nellie Jackson

Seminar Description: The course stresses the historical study of the Holocaust through the reading of Night by Elie Wiesel, The Diary of Anne Frank, films such as The Devil’s Arithmetic, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Anne B. Real a modern telling of Anne Frank’s Life and excerpts from other film based on the Holocaust. Students study the perpetrators, the victims and intended victims, and also the "bystanders", of the Holocaust and the ideology, the administrative systems, and the general context of the 1930's and 1940's. We visit the Breman Museum in downtown Atlanta for a tour and the Museum of Holocaust Education in Kennesaw. The materials used include accounts by survivors, and historians. Students view historical documents at the perspective museums. Curriculum Connection: English/History: reading and composition Elective Credits = .5 Learner Goal(s): Students will read and view the stories of survivors of the Holocaust. They will understand

the role that literature and film play in translating historical events.

Seminar Description: Students will use tools and building materials to craft a set for the

spring musical from scaled drawings and paint elevations. Curriculum Connection: Students will use basic math (Geometry, Algebra) to read plans and

build scenery. Students will also use their understanding of poetry and literature to interpret the script so as to reflect visually what is written in the text.

Learner Goal(s): Each student will learn the basics of set construction and how a

production crew creates a set. Each student will have a basic understanding of the design and production process of a piece of theater.
