Revitalising the only surviving pre-war cinema

Built in 1930, the Yau Ma Tei Theatre is the only pre-World War II cinema that remains in the urban area of Hong Kong. It closed down and was listed as a historic building in 1998. In 2012, the theatre reprised its role as a place of entertainment when it reopened as a venue dedicated to Cantonese opera. The  building’s   restoration  was   faithful   to   the   original,  making   it  an ideal venue to enjoy the richness and colour of traditional Chinese theatre. Inside, the audience sits under the original roof beams. The internal gable arch over the stage is also authentic. Equipped with modern performing and rehearsal facilities such as the computerised lighting system, audio system, motorised machinery and hoisting system, the intimate 300-seat theatre is now a popular training and performing venue as well as a cradle for nurturing Cantonese opera talents. The extension of stage lighting system, installed with 70 downlights and profile spotlights with different field angles, can be raised and lowered above the stage, to provide better sound reflection for concert performances.

Safety comes first:

The overhead stage reflector (left) is   connected   with   Ron   StageMaster’s   multi-load cell, stage safety device for load control and overload prevention (top right).

This laptop-based Ron StageMaster safety system (bottom right) is a real-time monitor of load-map that can be overlaid on stage-plan layout (e.g. autoCAD) and can enable monitoring all the loads during installation and through the entire show.

The system is also connected with a Kinesys DigiHoist controller (bottom right) — a linkable, fixed speed digital controller with safety group halt functionality built in. It can be used with local controls or an optional touch screen control pendant.

New movable reflector adds acoustic flexibility Since its grand opening on 8 November 1989, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre has remained the premier cultural venue offering stimulating environment for arts talents and quality programmes to the public, and has since been witnessing the development of the arts in Hong Kong. The centre's 2,019-seat oval-shape Concert Hall is designed for music performances. The hall is finished in high quality oak and fitted with adjustable acoustic canopy and curtains to ensure quality acoustics effect. To improve the acoustic performance for the extended stage area, the construction of a mock-up extension of the over-stage reflector was carried out in August 2013. This extension covering the extended downstage area is primely intended to enhance additional reflection. It also serves to collect valuable data in developing a design for a permanent extension to be constructed in later years. With the completion of the construction of this mock up extension, there are also some modifications on stage and house lighting to supplement this acoustic improvement project. The overall lighting system has been adjusted to provide better illumination for concert performances. All the house lighting fixtures are grouped and programmed for the reconstructed scenes. Aesthetic dimming  effects  are  then  applied  based  on  the  scenes’  requirements  to  enhance  visitors' experiences in viewing the exhibition.

The  5.7”  iLight  touch screen controller with a tailored software-based control interface (bottom left), is installed inside the gallery. The controller has a full  scene  set  programming  functions  with  “PIN”  security  options which allows the user to adjust preset levels on lighting scenes.

At the control room, the iLight Ethernet Gateway (bottom left) enables remote connection of the touch-screen controller inside the gallery with iLight DMX Source Controller (top left) to activate scenes and sequences. Lighting output is handled by 3 sets of Macostar MARS 12-channal Dimmer Packs (Centre).

Bruce  Lee:  Kung  Fu  •  Art  •  Life July 20, 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the passing of Bruce Lee, the internationally renowned martial arts movie star. Almost 4 decades after his death, Lee's influence continues to cross the boundaries of region, race and even age. "Bruce Lee: Kung  Fu  •  Art   •  Life",   the   long-awaited exhibition presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and jointly organised by the Bruce Lee Foundation and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, set to become the talk of the town and will run for 5 years until July 2018.

Occupying a total area of 850m2 at   the   Museum’s   Thematic  Gallery 6, the gallery houses several sets of reconstructions, which have been created with ideas inspired by prominent scenes in Lee's 5 classic kung fu movies as well as his gym and his study. The exhibits, placed suitably in the reconstructed scenes, will enhance visitors' experiences in viewing the exhibition. The exhibition will also include a collector series in which the theme will be changed regularly to show the precious collections of different collectors with an aim of introducing the cultural significance and the influence of Bruce Lee through the collectors' eyes.

The exhibition has gathered more than 600 precious relics and memorabilia items related to Bruce Lee on loan for display. They include more than 400 relics from the Bruce Lee Foundation, the largest number of artefacts that the Foundation has ever lent out.

To tie in with this 5-year exhibition, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum worked with Macostar to upgrade their existing dimming and architectural lighting control system. Dimmer packs with high performance and reliability were chosen to fulfil the   gallery’s   demanding   everyday   usage.   The   new   lighting  control system provides easy selection of sophisticated lighting moods.   The   system’s   user   interface   features   a flexible touch screen  device  which  provides  an  intuitive  “user  friendly”  method  of interfacing to a software-based lighting control system. Programs can be tailored to suit the precise needs of the gallery. It allows museum staff to easily reprogram their own scenes without the need of any engineer site visits.

“LED” the way: working together with tungsten

There are at present a total of 59 community halls in Hong Kong under the management of Home Affairs Department. Being one of the few government-qualified specialist contractors for stage lighting and machinery systems, Macostar has taken an active role in system design and equipment supply for a majority of these venues. In August 2011, the District Council endorsed to carry out upgrading works of lighting, audio-visual, and acoustics facilities in 2 community halls in Lei Tung and Stanley. The scope of works was similar to that of their neighbouring Wah Kwai and Ap Lei Chau community halls in Southern District. Of all the stage lighting fixtures upgraded in this particular hall, more than 75% are LEDs, including our Macostar LED spotlights, which provide high lumen and close to skin tone color rendering (CRI: Ra90). All lighting fixtures are RDM ready and available with DMX controls for smooth dimming. These 2 venues are also the first few local community halls in Hong Kong using LED spotlights specifically designed in the professional stage lighting standard and made by a Hong Kong-based company. Cultural venue gets eco-friendly LED upgrade

In August 2011, the District Council endorsed to carry out upgrading works of lighting, audio-visual, and acoustics facilities in 2 community halls in Lei Tung and Stanley. The scope of works was similar to that of their neighbouring Wah Kwai and Ap Lei Chau community halls in Southern District. Over 70% of the stage lighting fixtures installed in Stanley Community Hall are high-power LEDs, including our Macostar LED spotlights, which work perfectly together with the other traditional tungsten halogen fixtures, and at the same time, reduce energy cost. The efficient lighting system also complements with the hall's eco-friendly interior design especially the glass roof of the community hall, where skylight penetrates into the hall during the day, and lighting inside the hall illuminates the outdoor courtyard at night. Together with Lei Tung, the 2 venues are also the first few local community halls in Hong Kong using LED spotlights specifically designed in the professional stage lighting standard and made by a Hong Kong-based company. The Cradle of Creativity

Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC), the landmark building in the City University of Hong Kong, is a distinctive crystalline shaped, nine-storey complex designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind. The building houses the School of Creative Media, providing a stimulating environment and meeting point for professionals from around the world and for student-staff interactions, interdisciplinary collaborations and synergies with industry. One of the most important features in CMC is the Multimedia Theatre (MMT).

The MMT with a flexible staging and a capacity of 224 seating is well equipped with professional performance facilities on audio, video and lighting, and motions capture facilities. Over a hundred high power spotlights are equipped in MMT. They are removable and can be installed on every lighting bar. The eight rectangular aluminium trusses can be raised up or lowered down by their corresponding motorized endurable winches. These lighting and truss systems together with the professional audio system allow any multimedia performances, 3D projections, recording with a studio audience, motion capture and professional shootings with flexible usage of lighting and splendid audio quality. Specifically dyed chroma-key green cyclorama, which is set at one side of the VPS. All lighting fixtures are installed on the motorised lighting bars at the centre of the studio, providing professional lighting for shooting.

The chroma-key setting includes a green cyclorama and a green painted floor cover, which facilitates with chroma-key shooting.

A white cyclorama, as well as a black curtain at front, is set at the other sides of the VPS.

More than a Teaching Studio

Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC), the landmark building in the City University of Hong Kong, is a distinctive crystalline shaped, nine-storey complex designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, with state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, and advanced audio-visual equipment. The building houses the School of Creative Media, providing facilities that enable the University to become the first in Asia to offer the highest level of education and training in the creative media fields. The Video Production Studio (VPS) in CMC is a professional studio, which is far superior to an ordinary teaching studio. In late 2010, the VPS was carried out configuring works of professional lighting, power and other services. In order to provide a splendid teaching and instructional environment for chroma-key shooting and real-time video mixing and editing, the studio is equipped with high power spotlights, intuitive control panel and chroma-key setting with a stringent lighting requirement. The chroma-key setting includes a specifically dyed green cyclorama and a green painted floor cover, which perfectly join together. New motorised lighting bar mounts the existing front of house lighting fixtures, which provide localized light spots for the stage.

New lighting fixtures were upgraded at the centre of the stage, providing a general wash of the whole performing area.

3 lightings bars are suspended from a metal construction, and can be raised up or lowered down by their own motorised winches via a MACHO hoist controller (bottom right). All winches drive the steel wires which pass through the pulleys mounted underneath the metal construction (top right) and then attach down to the lighting bars (left).

A new lighting arrangement

Since 2001, the 269-seat Lee Hysan Concert Hall is not only one of the key teaching facilities for the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, but is also open to public for any musical events. This symbolises the University's commitment in music and performing arts, and enriches the cultural atmosphere of the community. The concert hall features a stage designed for chamber orchestra, solo recitals and large choirs, equipped with state-of-the-art architectural acoustics, and a brand new motorised lighting truss system upgraded in late 2011. The existing lighting fixtures were replaced, rearranged and mounted on 3 sets of internal wired lighting bar trusses. Stage lighting setup is now much quicker and more versatile and can be easily managed by a touch-screen hoist controller. To prepare for the implementation of the new four-year curriculum, HKU constructed the Centennial Campus, adjoining to the west of the existing Main Campus. This will provide the important   additional   space   to   support   the   University’s   core  functions of teaching and research as it moves into its second century. One of the key features of this new campus is the Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre, which composes of a 1000-seat Grand Hall, 26 small halls and classrooms, and a black box theatre located below the ground level of the Centennial Campus. Expertly designed with flexible acoustics to support academic and cultural events ranging from lectures to concerts to film galas, the Grand Hall has excellent noise isolation making it perhaps the quietest venue in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has embarked on a campus development from 2007 to increase spatial area at the University while, at the same time, upgrading the campus environment and facilities, thus ameliorating the teaching, research and learning ambiance.

Completed in June 2012, the new Academic and Administration Building was built at the centre of the campus buildings along Renfrew Road, the 13-storey new building will be a fresh, striking  HKBU  landmark.  The  "Tsang  Chan  Sik  Yue  Auditorium”  is a 400-seat multi-purpose lecture theatre located on the 2nd floor of this newly built campus building to cater to the demand of the University community for a sizeable venue to hold all kinds of academic, university-wide and student activities.

New-look campus with an "all-LED-lit" stage

Founded in 1860, Sacred Heart Canossian College launched their 150th Anniversary Project in 2010, which consists of an auditorium and an IT Centre of 3 floors. The project not only provides a better learning environment for their students but also encourages their all-round non-academic developments. Formerly the 3rd floor of the College Hall Block, the Charity Fung Auditorium is now a 400-seat venue for lectures, music and drama performances in an intimate, mini-theatre setting. It is also one of the first few schools in Hong Kong with an "all-LED-lit" stage lighting system. Macostar handpicked their award-winning 5600K cool white LED profiles for this project as they give powerful light beams with a long lifespan, while simulating natural daylight for various school activities at the venue. Macostar also built 4 side stage lighting towers to mount these flesh-tone LED profiles on both sides of the stage, as light from the sides can create special effects especially in dance performances. Users can also adjust different sizes, shapes, and edges of light beams with the spotlight's built-in shutters and optical zoom focus, and can easily apply colours as these LED profiles work perfectly well with colour filters. Flags ready to fly with Hong Kong's largest poolside crowd The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) initiated a redevelopment project in 2009 to construct a new indoor swimming pool complex which meets international standards and with 2,500 seats provides the largest swimming pool spectator stand in Hong Kong. The new complex is suitable for hosting various types of local, regional and international competitions. Set to open in September 2013 to replace the old pool which was built more than five decades ago, the new swimming pool is uniquely designed, with a streamlined exterior glass wall built alongside the trees in Victoria Park, creating curves and interesting patterns which give the pool a modern feel. The 50x25-metre main pool and the 33x25-metre multi-purpose pool are each equipped with a motorised Flag Raising System that synchronises the hoisting speed of national flags with the national anthem to be playing at the medal presentation ceremony.

8 adjustable hanging points at the 2/F Atrium (each with 250kg safe working load) are attached to the steel wires powered by the winches at  6/F  Skylight’s  equipment room (bottom right) to ensure safe lifting.

The pedestrian passage features 19 hanging points (with dumb weight and power socket outlet (bottom left), each carries a 200kg safe working load) fitted above the reflected ceiling, right next to the extra-large shop windows, ready for suspending all types of promotional signage and displays.

A signage solution for The Very Place to Go It has been 10 years since there was a new shopping mall in Tuen Mun. V city, strategically located atop Tuen Mun MTR Station, Light Rail Station and a major transportation hub, is Sun Hung Kai Properties' brand new flagship shopping mall in the New Territories West. V City will introduce new and foreign retailers with a modern lifestyle concept that appeals to both local young people and tourists.

Designed by the renowned Benoy, V City has an area of 300,000 square feet with over 130 shops on 3 floors. The outer wall is 300 metres long and the designer has used extra-large windows for its design. The transparent, bright environment will connect with the outdoors and create a comfortable and spacious shopping area with a 3.7-metre high concourse and six-metre pedestrian passage. It will also have the largest LED display in the district that can change images to match the current theme of the shopping mall and provide the latest information about special offers, promotions and activities.

Macostar provided a bespoke engineering  solution  to  the  mall’s  signage support and hanging system. Motorised pile-winding winches with high safety factor, which are widely used in theatres and TV studios, were chosen to hang all forms of promotional signage and displays in great adjustability and versatility. To ensure a clean appearance in the retail and leisure environment, winches at the pedestrian passage were discreetly mounted inside the reflected ceiling. Each hanging point fits with a decorative ceiling cover and perfectly blends into the surroundings. Signage and retail decoration can also be positioned easily, accurately and safely using a wireless handheld remote.

Ballroom makeover with state-of-the-art LED Stage Lighting Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is located adjacent to the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, with commanding views of Victoria   Harbour.   The   hotel’s   680m2 Grand Ballroom has a pillar-free design and a permanent stage, and is one of the largest in Hong Kong, ideal for meetings, incentive events, conferences and private parties up to 1200 persons. After a 5-month renovation project, the brand-new Grand Ballroom reopened in September 2013. The carpeted foyer, sliding doors between the ballroom and the foyer, and the more-elaborate-than-before chandelier have made this legendary event venue even more grand and elegant. Being the first hotel in Hong Kong to introduce a built-in HD LED TV wall, the Grand Ballroom offers guests excellent visual experiences with a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure. This time, Grand Hyatt aimed for an energy-efficient solution for their stage lighting area, and took one step forward to replace their existing tungsten fixtures with LEDs. Macostar's MacoLEDs R Series LED spotlights were chosen, as they save up to 77% of electricity generated by conventional 1,000-watt tungsten fixtures.

A new studio lighting standard

China Central Television (CCTV) had been expanding greatly, in competition with major international television and news service providers, a new headquarters was designed and completed by the renowned OMA and Arup in 2012, forming a landscape of public entertainment, outdoor filming areas, and production studios in the new Beijing central business district. With close working relationships since the 1990s, Macostar collaborated with CCTV again and gave a significant contribution in the studio lighting area of 10 new studios in CCTV Headquarters including Studio E01, their largest studio, with floor area about 2000 m². This lighting system in Studio E01 sets the industry-leading standard in China with highlights such as:

Flexible Motorised Trusses

4 signature suspension trusses in the form of the letters

"CCTV" give lighting flexibility for different production

requirements. They can be hoisted, programmed, and

remote-controlled by a hoist controller.

Powerful Machinery

86 Motorised Drum Winches were installed to provide stable

support for lifting over 51 tonnes of lighting equipment up to

the ceiling.

Intuitive Hoisting Control

The movement of lighting fixtures is in precise control on an

LCD touch screen display in a simulated floor plan interface.

Smart Dimming

Intelligent Dimmer Racks feature a touch screen display,

providing real-time operation status and can be controlled

with a simple touch.

Mixed use of Fresnels and Panel lights gives directional lighting and highlights to faces and shoulders.

Motorised lighting trusses were custom-made to support the studio’s open concept design.

Over 120 LED spotlights in this “all-LED-lit” studio are DMX-512 controllable (left), while all Motorised Trusses can be managed by a Hoist Controller.

An “all-LED-lit” TV News Studio

In 2011, Hubei Television offered HD TV broadcast on its flagship nationwide satellite TV station and 8 regional TV stations with a total of 260 hours of programs every week, accessible to 80 million viewers. In January 2013, Macostar finished an “all-LED-lit” studio lighting system for HBTV's new 600m

2 production studio, which was built for high-definition live

television recording and production of factual programmes such as news and talk shows.

As the 600m2 Studio adopts an open concept design, the layout

of lighting fixtures is very complex, and needs to be carefully planned and optimized, in order to give flexibility for live HD broadcast, without compromising camera angles during multi-camera setup.
