REFLECTING ON THE GOSPEL Before his baptism by St. Ambrose at Easter in AD 387, St. Augustine went to northern Italy near Milan on a kind of retreat. While there he wrote a small work entitled The Happy Lifein the form of a dialogue with various family members, a typical rhetorical style of the time. With his dialogue partnershe establishes that all people wish to be happy but that happiness will not be found in material things one desires. Satisfying one desire, another simply emerges. Happiness is not fleeting but is permanent and, therefore, it can only be found in God who is everlasting. Augustine concludes the happy person is one who possesses God. Possessing God is a matter of living a good life, doing Gods will, and having a clean spirit. No doubt St. Augustine would have been familiar with the Beatitudes. He knew Scripture well. His conclusions about happiness square up well with the Beatitudes, which lead us away from ourselves and our own desires and toward God. The Beatitudes point to permanency; ultimately, they willlead to heaven, to everlasting Life, to seeing God. The kingdom of heaven is promised to those who seek the happiness, the blessedness that comes from possessing God. Jesus announces the blessings for those who live in the kingdom of heaven. In this he describes the qualities that mark true discipleship: poor in spirit, mourning loss, meek, seekers of justice, merciful, clean of heart, peacemakers, bearers of insults and persecution. To be so blessed, so happy so fortunate requires letting go of self. All these qualities exhibit the self-emptying of Jesus himself. Blessedness is of, in, and with Jesus—and his followers. Our blessedness is both a quality of who we are and a blueprint for how we are to be and live as followers of Jesus. Happiness is a factor of how we relate to others-we are to be Jesusblessed Presence for others. Gospel living-taking seriously the Beatitudes-turns upside down the relationships people have with each other and invites a new world order that is the presence of Gods kingdom of heaven. And this presence of Gods kingdom is not so much our own doing, as what God is accomplishing in us. Happiness-blessedness-is Gods gift those to those who seek God and do Gods will. ARCHBISHOPS CATHOLIC APPEAL 2017 Next weekend, is Commitment Weekend for the 2017 Archbishops Catholic Appeal. During Mass we will watch a video from Archbishop Sample about the Appeal. If you received a personalized commitment card in the mail please bring it to Mass with you as we join together to support our Catholic Church in western Oregon. If you did not receive a commitment card in the mail pledge envelopes will be available during Mass. This next week, please read the Archbishops Catholic Appeal materials you received in the Parish Bulletin today and prayerfully reflect on the level of commitment you will make next weekend. The Archbishops Catholic Appeal provides substantial financial support to essential ministries that support parishes in our Catholic Church in western Oregon. These programs provide education and faith formation at all levels and provide a Catholic presence for tens of thousands of people. When we stop to count our abundant blessings, we are aware of how truly blessed we are. The Archbishops Catholic Appeal is an invitation to share your blessings and support for the Gospel mission here in Western Oregon. Your pledge is also a sign of your gratitude for Gods generous abundance. While we can never out-do God in generosity, we are called to join in the mission of the Gospel as we put forth the gifts of life, goodness, and grace through the sharing of our own blessings from God. NEW TELEPHONE SYSTEM Recently the Parish Office updated our telephones to a more modern, constantly working and updated system. We are currently tweaking a few things with the new system to make it more functional so we ask that you please be patient as we work thru this process. One of the many new features is direct access to the staff member you wish to talk to. Our main phone number is the same: 503-266-9411 and you can still reach all of our Staff members through the main phone number. However, each staff member now has their own direct phone number that you can contact them directly—bypassing the main number. You can find each phone number listed under Pastoral Stafflocated on the insert page. Again, thank you for being patient as we get use to our new telephone system.

REFLECTING ON THE GOSPEL

Before his baptism by St. Ambrose at Easter in AD

387, St. Augustine went to northern Italy near Milan on

a kind of retreat. While there he wrote a small work

entitled “The Happy Life” in the form of a dialogue

with various family members, a typical rhetorical style

of the time. With his “dialogue partners” he establishes

that all people wish to be happy but that happiness will

not be found in material things one desires. Satisfying

one desire, another simply emerges. Happiness is not

fleeting but is permanent and, therefore, it can only be

found in God who is everlasting. Augustine concludes

the happy person is one who possesses God. Possessing

God is a matter of living a good life, doing God’s will,

and having a clean spirit. No doubt St. Augustine

would have been familiar with the Beatitudes. He

knew Scripture well. His conclusions about happiness

square up well with the Beatitudes, which lead us away

from ourselves and our own desires and toward God.

The Beatitudes point to permanency; ultimately, “they

will” lead to heaven, to everlasting Life, to seeing God.

The “kingdom of heaven “ is promised to those who

seek the happiness, the blessedness that comes from

possessing God.

Jesus announces the blessings for those who live in

“the kingdom of heaven.” In this he describes the

qualities that mark true discipleship: poor in spirit,

mourning loss, meek, seekers of justice, merciful, clean

of heart, peacemakers, bearers of insults and

persecution. To be so blessed, so happy so fortunate

requires letting go of self. All these qualities exhibit the

self-emptying of Jesus himself. Blessedness is of, in,

and with Jesus—and his followers. Our blessedness is

both a quality of who we are and a blueprint for how

we are to be and live as followers of Jesus.

Happiness is a factor of how we relate to others-we

are to be Jesus’ blessed Presence for others. Gospel

living-taking seriously the Beatitudes-turns upside

down the relationships people have with each other and

invites a new world order that is the presence of God’s

“kingdom of heaven.” And this presence of God’s

kingdom is not so much our own doing, as what God is

accomplishing in us. Happiness-blessedness-is God’s

gift those to those who seek God and do God’s will. Living Liturgy—year A

ARCHBISHOPS CATHOLIC APPEAL 2017

Next weekend, is Commitment Weekend for the 2017

Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. During Mass we will watch a video

from Archbishop Sample about the Appeal. If you received a

personalized commitment card in the mail please bring it to Mass

with you as we join together to support our Catholic Church in

western Oregon. If you did not receive a commitment card in the

mail pledge envelopes will be available during Mass.

This next week, please read the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal

materials you received in the Parish Bulletin today and prayerfully

reflect on the level of commitment you will make next weekend.

The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal provides substantial financial

support to essential ministries that support parishes in our Catholic

Church in western Oregon. These programs provide education and

faith formation at all levels and provide a Catholic presence for

tens of thousands of people.

When we stop to count our abundant blessings, we are aware of

how truly blessed we are. The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is an

invitation to share your blessings and support for the Gospel

mission here in Western Oregon.

Your pledge is also a sign of your gratitude for God’s generous

abundance. While we can never out-do God in generosity, we are

called to join in the mission of the Gospel as we put forth the gifts

of life, goodness, and grace through the sharing of our own

blessings from God.

NEW TELEPHONE SYSTEM

Recently the Parish Office updated our telephones to a more

modern, constantly working and updated system. We are currently

tweaking a few things with the new system to make it more

YOUR SUNDAY CONTRIBUTIONS

LEAVE A LEGACY TIP

Has St. Patrick made a difference in your life? You can thank God and your parish

community for this difference by remembering St. Patrick’s in your

estate plans. Imagine the positive impact on our community if everyone made a

donation through their estate plan. Contact your financial advisor or attorney for

more information.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE FINANCE COUNCIL

By now, each family should have received their pledge card asking for your tithing

commitment. If not, there are some in the pews. Please make a point of returning

them to the parish office at your earliest convenience. We are counting on these for

budgeting and hope that each of you will pray about the amount and dig deep to

help the finances of our Parish Family. As we stated, there are many bills to pay and

ministries to support. Thank you.
