From Sunday’s Gospel

Jesus had sent out his friends, the apostles, to teach and heal. When they

rejoined him they told him all they had. Then Jesus said, “You must come away to

a lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while,” for there were so many

people coming and going that the apostles had no time even to eat. So they went

off in a boat to a quiet place where they could be by themselves. But people saw

them going and they hurried on foot to the place and got there before them! So

as Jesus stepped ashore he saw a large crowd, and he took pity on them because

they were like sheep without a shepherd and he taught them at length .

Pope Francis writes:

“The summertime offers many people an

occasion for rest. It is also a favourable

time to take care of our relationships.”

Today’s word is Holidays. Hard work, and sometimes stress, can often be part

of our lives so we all need a holiday at some time—to rest and refresh our-

selves. Jesus knows that work is essential but in this weekend’s gospel he re-

minds us how important it is to take time out too. Pope Francis also says,

“Holidays offer a time to rest and restore the spirit.”

Adoremus Eucharistic Congress This Congress takes place in Liverpool from the 7th-9th of September and is an initiative by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales to help all Catholics, whether going to the Con-

gress or not, to reflect on the centrality of the Eucharist in the Church. Mary Farmer and

Emily Allmand will be going from our parish and we are asked to support them, and all who will be present, by our prayers. The following prayer by St Thomas Aquinas and translated by Gerard Manley Hopkins can also be found on prayer

cards at the back of church: Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore, masked by these bare shadows,

shape and nothing more, see, Lord, at thy service low lies here a heart, lost all lost in wonder at the God thou art.

Most of us were taught that God would love us when we

change. In fact, God loves you so that you can change.

What empowers change, what makes you desirous of

change is the experience of love. It is that inherent experi-

ence of love that becomes the engine of change. (Richard Rohr)

Missionaries of Africa (The White Fathers) Mission Appeal

Every year the Bishop gives a Religious Order permission to make an appeal in the

parishes of the diocese. This year it is the turn of The Missionaries of Africa (The

White Fathers). This weekend, 21st/22nd July we welcome Fr Frank Nolan M.Afr

who will be coming to preach the appeal in our parish. By way of introduction we

have received the following:

“The Missionaries of Africa” a.k.a. (The White

Fathers), are an international team of priests,

brothers and lay associates from Africa, Britain

and many other countries around the world. Any

ministry which has a real relationship with Africa,

no matter in what part of the world it may be, is considered by the Missionaries of

Africa to be within the scope of the apostolate. Through parish work, building up

small Christian communities, working with the media, involvement in justice and

peace, agriculture, seminary training, education and social welfare the Missionar-

ies of Africa aim to work in partnership with the Church in Africa...and above all

else to help build up the leadership of the Churches.

The Second Collection this week will be for The Missionaries of Africa

Charity Coffee Morning

In aid of Siguli Orphanage Centre in Kenya...for play

equipment for the children.

Cream Teas; Coffee; Juice; Home made cakes; Biscuits.

Sacred Heart Parish Centre

11.00-3.30pm Saturday 4th August.

The Siguli Orphan Centre is a school for young children

which opened in 1999. Originally they received some sponsorship from the Unit-

ed States but this was withdrawn some years ago. Now they are dependent on

the minimal fees they charge the children, though no child is sent home if they

cannot pay, and donations. Your support for this Coffee Morning will be greatly

appreciated and any money raised will be sent to the Centre.

Thank you, Mary Farmer.

Diary Date for a Weekend with Luke’s Gospel

Due to the fact that we cannot book a weekend retreat away this

autumn we are going to have a weekend retreat ‘at home’. The

subject matter will be the Gospel of St Luke and it will be led by

Fr Michael Winstanley SDB author of Walking with Luke. Please keep

the weekend of 2nd-4th November 2018 FREE.

Organists and Pianists

At the parish council meeting a discussion took place

about the buying a good quality digital piano for use in

church. Before taking things further it was decided to

ask, through the newsletter, whether there are any people in the parish (a) who

can play the organ or who would be willing to learn to play the organ, and, (b)

who can play the piano and would be willing to play in church at the weekend

Masses. Please have a think and let either Chris or Fr Bernard know.
