Fifth Sunday after Epiphany
02.05.2012
Reflection
"Prayer is meant to be the conversation where your life and your God meet"
- David Powlison
“One of the subtlest hindrances to prayer is probably the most pervasive. In the
broader culture and in our churches, we prize intellect, competency, and wealth.
Because we can do life without God, praying seems nice but unnecessary. Money
can do what prayer does, and it is quicker and less time-consuming. Our trust in
ourselves and in our talents makes us structurally independent of God. As a result,
exhortations to pray don’t stick."
- Paul Miller
"God aims to exalt himself by working for those who wait for him. Prayer is the es-
sential activity of waiting for God: acknowledging our helplessness and his power,
calling upon him for help, seeking his counsel…. Prayer is the antidote for the dis-
ease of self-confidence…”
- John Piper
"The whole is from him, the giving both of these things and of those; for no
achievement finds its source in us... Not then so as to deliver man from darkness
only did he show his love toward him. It is a great thing indeed to have been de-
livered from darkness; but to have been brought into a kingdom too is far greater."
- Chrysostom

Calling
WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP*
Leader: Let us worship the eternal God,
the source of love and life, who creates us.
People: Let us worship Jesus Christ,
the risen one, who lives among us.
Leader: Let us worship the Spirit,
the holy fire, who renews us.
People: To the one true God be praise
in all times and places,
through the grace of Jesus Christ.
PRAYER OF ADORATION
PRAYER CONCLUDES BY SAYING IN UNISON:
Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be
done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
HYMNS OF PRAISE — JESUS EVERLASTING KING / LORD HAVE MERCY (MUSIC ON PAGES 3–4)
*Biblical worship is always a response to God’s gracious revelation of himself to his people. Hence, all our
worship services begin with a scriptural “call to worship” (that is, the content of the “call” comes from God’s own Word
quoted by the leader and the congregation). In this “call” we are reminded that God always takes the initiative. He
always comes toward his people first, in grace. Our worship is a reflexive and deliberate response to his gracious call.
We are promised that when we worship him correctly, he is glorified and the dislocations of our lives are healed.

Jesus Everlasting King WORDS BY ISAAC WATTS AND MATTHEW S. SMITH
MUSIC BY MATTHEW SMITH
Chorus
Jesus, everlasting King
Accept the tribute which we bring
Accept the well-deserved renown
And wear our praises as Your crown
O send Your Spirit to impart
Rest and repentance to our hearts,
Like the dear hour when from above
We first received Your pledge of love.
Chorus
The gladness of redemption’s day,
Our hearts would wish it long to stay,
Nor let our faith forsake its hold,
Nor comforts sink, or love grow cold.
Chorus
May every time of worship see
Your grace revealed more rich and free,
Till we are raised to sing Your name
At the great supper of the Lamb.
Chorus
O that the months would roll away
And bring the coronation day;
The King of Grace shall fill the throne
With all His Father’s glories on.
Chorus

Lord Have Mercy WORDS AND MUSIC BY STEVE MERKEL
Jesus I've forgotten
The words that You have spoken
Promises that burned
Within my heart have now grown dim
With a doubting heart I follow
The paths of earthly wisdom
Forgive me for my unbelief
Renew the fire again
Lord have mercy Christ have mercy
Lord have mercy on me
I have built an altar
Where I’ve worshiped things of man
I have taken journeys
That have drawn me far from You
Now I am returning
To Your mercies ever flowing
Pardon my transgressions
Help me love You again
I have longed to know You
And all Your tender mercies
Like a river of forgiveness
Ever flowing without end
So I bow my heart before You
In the goodness of Your Presence
Your grace forever shining
Like a beacon in the night

Cleansing
CALL TO REPENTANCE
Merciful God,
in your gracious presence
we confess our sin and the sin of this world.
Although Christ is among us as our peace,
we are a people divided against ourselves
as we cling to the values of a broken world.
The profit and pleasures we pursue
lay waste the land and pollute the seas.
The fears and jealousies that we harbor
set neighbor against neighbor
and nation against nation.
We abuse your good gifts of imagination and freedom, of intellect and reason,
and turn them into bonds of oppression.
Lord, have mercy upon us;
heal and forgive us.
Set us free to serve you in the world
as agents of your reconciling love in Jesus Christ.
Amen.
SILENT CONFESSION (45 SECONDS)
SONG OF COMFORT — WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS
WORDS AND MUSIC: AMERICAN FOLK HYMN
What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul.
WORDS OF ASSURANCE A ND THE PEACE
Leader: “The Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints
in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the
kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of
sins." (Colossians 1:12-14)
Leader: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People: And also with you.

Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken WORDS BY HENRY LYTE, MUSIC BY BILL MOORE
Jesus I my cross have taken
All to leave and follow Thee
Destitute despised forsaken
Thou from hence my all shall be
Perish every fond ambition
All I’ve sought or hoped or known
Yet how rich is my condition
God and heaven are still my own
Let the world despise and leave me
They have left my Savior too
Human hearts and looks deceive me
Thou art not like them untrue
O while Thou dost smile upon me
God of wisdom love and might
Foes may hate and friends disown me
Show Thy face and all is bright
Go then earthly fame and treasure
Come disaster scorn and pain
In Thy service pain is pleasure
With Thy favor loss is gain
I have called Thee Abba Father
I have stayed my heart on Thee
Storms may howl and clouds may gather
All must work for good to me
Haste thee on from grace to glory
Armed by faith and winged by prayer
Heaven’s eternal days before thee
God’s own hand shall guide us there
Soon shall close thy earthly mission
Soon shall pass thy pilgrim days
Hope shall change to glad fruition
Faith to sight and prayer to praise

Immortal Invisible WORDS BY WALTER SMITH, MUSIC WELSH FOLK TUNE
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.
To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish - but naught changeth Thee.
Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
All praise we would render; O help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee!

INVITATION TO THE SA CRAMENT
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
Minister: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Minister: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right for us to give thanks and praise.
Minister: It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks, for you alone are
God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and forever. Fountain
of all life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing;
you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels
stand before you to serve you night and day, and, beholding the glory of your presence,
they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature un-
der heaven, we glorify your name and lift our voices in joyful praise:
(The Congregation Sings Together)
Praise to the Lord
O let all that is in me adore Him
All that hath life and breath come now with praises before Him
Let the amen sound from His people again
Gladly for aye we adore Him
Minister: Heavenly Father, show forth among us the presence of your life -giving Word and
Holy Spirit, to sanctify us and your whole church through this sacrament. Grant that all
who share the body and blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ, may be one in him and may re-
main faithful in love and hope. And as this grain has been gathered from many fields into
one loaf and these grapes from many hills into one cup, grant, O Lord, that your whole
church may soon be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION
MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION
Minister: Therefore, let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
People: Christ has died,
Christ has risen,
Christ will come again.
DISTRIBUTION OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP
Directions for taking communion: Redeemer Church welcomes all sincere
Christians—those who are trusting in Jesus Christ for salvation, understand the
meaning of the Lord’s Supper, and are in good standing with congregations that
proclaim the gospel— to receive Holy Communion with us. Please note that we use
wine for Communion; if you prefer non alcoholic grape juice, the grape juice is
white and the wine is red. For those with wheat allergies, a gluten free cracker is
available in place of the bread. Also, the bread and the wine may be eaten and
drunk as they are received. Please dispose of the cups in the trash receptacle.
A Word to Parents: Children are welcome at the communion table. To receive
the Lord’s Supper, a child must have been baptized and been formally received as a
communing member by the Session of this church or the governing body of the
church to which you belong. If you have any question about how the process works,
please contact Pastor David. Children may take the wine at their parents’ discre-
tion.

PRAYERS FOR THOSE NO T COMMUNING
(Because Redeemer is a church that is not only for convinced Christians, but also for peo-
ple at different stages in their spiritual journey, we gladly extend room for you to process,
think, and dialogue. Use the prayers provided below as guides to reflect upon and respond
to what God is doing in your life.)
PRAYER FOR THOSE SEA RCHING FOR TRUTH
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be
undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If
what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of
who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and
that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
PRAYER OF BELIEF
Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before
believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I
thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering
forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn
from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.
PRAYER FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH SIN
Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn
from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me
to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set
before me, looking to you, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Amen.
PRAYER OF COMMITMENT
Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of
committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps
to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Bread of the World in Mercy Broken WORDS: REGINALD HEBER, 1827 (VERSES); ZAC HICKS, 2006 (ADD’L TEXT)
MUSIC: ZAC HICKS, 2006
Bread of the world, in mercy broken
Wine of the soul, in mercy shed
By Whom the words of life were spoken
And in Whose death our sins are dead
Look on the heart by sorrow broken
Look on the tears by sinners shed
And be Thy feast to us the token
That by Thy grace our souls are fed
Have mercy, have mercy
Have mercy on us
Here is mercy, here is mercy
Here is mercy for us
So let us come to the feast of Jesus
Let us eat of the Bread of Life
Let us drink of the wine, His blood
To talk and dine with Jesus Christ
13
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVI NG
Loving God,
we thank you that you have fed us in this sacrament,
united us with Christ,
and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet in your eternal kingdom.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory
for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

His Love Can Never Fail WORDS AND MUSIC BY CHRISTOPHER MINER, E.S. HALL, AND EDWIN OTHELLO EXCELL
I do not ask to see the way
My feet will have to tread
But only that my soul may feed
Upon the living Bread
'Tis better far that I should walk
By faith close to His side
I may not know the way I go
But oh I know my Guide
Chorus
His love can never fail, His love can never fail
My soul is satisfied to know His love can never fail
My soul is satisfied to know His love can never fail
I will not fear though darkness come
Abroad o'er all the land
If I may only feel the touch
Of His own loving hand
And though I tremble when I think
How weak I am and frail
My soul is satisfied to know
His love can never fail
Chorus

The Real Presence of Christ BY WAYNE GRUDEM
The Lord’s Supper is not simply an ordinary meal among human beings— it is a fellowship
with Christ, in his presence and at his table. We must avoid the idea that any automatic or
magical benefit comes from sharing in the Lord’s Supper, whether a person participates in
faith or not. But when a person participates in faith, renewing and strengthening his or her
own trust in Christ for salvation, and believing that the Holy Spirit will bring spiritual
blessing through such participation, then certainly additional blessing may be expected.
We must be careful here to avoid the mistake of overreacting to Roman Catholic teaching
and maintaining that the Lord’s Supper is merely symbolic and not a means of grace. Paul
says, “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation (Gk. koinonia, “sharing,”
“fellowship”) in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation
[koinonia] in the body of Christ?” (1 Cor. 10:16).
Because there is such a sharing in the body and blood of Christ (apparently meaning a
sharing in the benefits of Christ’s body and blood given for us), the unity of believers is
beautifully exhibited at the time of the Lord’s Supper. “Because there is one bread, we who
are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread” (1 Cor. 10:17). And since we
are participants at “the table of the Lord” (1 Cor. 10:21), Paul warns the Corinthians that
they cannot participate in the Lord’s table and also participate in idol worship: “You cannot
partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons” (1 Cor. 10:21). There is a spiri-
tual union among believers and with the Lord that is strengthened and solidified at the
Lord’s Supper, and it is not to be taken lightly.
This is why the Corinthians were experiencing judgment for their abuse of the Lord’s Sup-
per (1 Cor. 11:29-30). But if Paul says there will be judgment for wrong participation in
the Lord’s Supper, then certainly we should expect blessing for right participation in the
Lord’s Supper.
When we obey Jesus’ command, “Take, eat” (Matthew 26:26), and go through the physical
activity of eating and drinking at the Lord’s table, our physical action pictures a corre-
sponding spiritual nourishment, a nourishment of our soul that will occur when we partici-
pate in obedience and faith. Jesus says, “For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink
indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him” (John 6:55 -
6).
Certainly Jesus is not speaking of a literal eating of his flesh and blood. But if he is not
speaking of a literal eating and drinking, then he must have in mind a spiritual participa-
tion in the benefits of the redemption he earns. The spiritual nourishment, so necessary for
our souls, is both symbolized and experienced in our participation in the Lord’s Supper.

think critically about movies.
Session 2: Engaging Culture
February 26 - April 1 (6 weeks), Teacher: Dr. Tim Pickavance, Asst. Professor of Philosophy
of Religion and Ethics, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University We are constantly encountering products of our culture: the music we listen to, the cars we
drive, the buildings in which we work, live, and worship, the television and movies we
watch, the food we eat, the beliefs and desires of the people we're in relationship with, and
on and on. How should we conduct ourselves in these encounters? What sort of posture
ought we have toward these cultural artifacts? In this class, we will work to understand
how three of the central themes of Christianity---Image of God, Creation-Fall-Redemption,
and Cross---bear on our engagement with culture.
Session 3: Adult Class TBD

What Does Discipleship at Redeemer Look Like?
Worship → Nurture → Mission → Culture
Worship & Nurture
Worship
The anchor and center of discipleship at Redeemer is our weekly Sunday worship and the
nourishment we receive there that comes through the Word and sacrament as a means of
God’s grace.
Nurture
Our ministries of nurture are the means we use to encourage spiritual growth and develop-
ment at Redeemer. They include the cultivation of an everyday discipleship church culture,
community groups, education, and family life gatherings.
19
Mission & Culture
What is discipleship for? To be a disciple is to be swept up in the mission of God in the
world. Our ministries of nurture drive, support, and inform our lifestyle characterized by
mission and pursuit of the peace of the city through creating culture.
Mission
We know our discipleship with Jesus is maturing when we are motivated by the grace and
acceptance of God to reach out to others. Practically we see the mission aspect of our dis-
cipleship on display when we pursue God’s mission through doing acts of mercy and hospi-
tality, serving our church community, caring for those who are suffering, serving the poor
and oppressed, sharing the good news of Jesus with those who do not yet follow Jesus, and
helping plant other churches that do the same.
Culture
Christians are called not to hide behind the walls of their distinct community but to take
their new hearts, minds and perspectives into the surrounding communities as salt and
light. As Abraham Kuyper contends, the believing community, gathered around Word and
sacrament, must radiate “beams of faith’s light into the realm of common grace” into edu-
cation, art, science, politics, business, economics and the marketplace. This means that
Christians are called to create public education institutions, build businesses, organize
neighborhood groups, create charities,
be artists and musicians and writers,
and start political action groups. We
are to make culture. As Jeremiah ex-
horted the newly exiled Jews in Babylon,
“Seek the peace (shalom) of the
city” (Jer. 29:5-7). Redeemer supports
this effort through education and facili-
tating Christians banding together to
support and encourage each other as
they create culture.
