Volunteers Needed: GAMBLER 500 Greetings: The 2nd Klamath Gambler 500 is approaching. This is the large car rally that comes through Klamath County with up to 2500 cars and up to 6000 people. The dates are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday June 28-30. As the group winds its way toward its home base, which is a gravel pit in metro area of Chemult, Oregon (Northern Klamath County), they will stop in Klamath Falls. One aspect of this year’s rally is to swing through the Discover Klamath Parking Lot to obtain a MEET ME IN KLAMATH sticker (yes, that is a high value present for this group). We need 3-4 volunteers to hang out at the Welcome Center from about 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Friday 6/28 and the same time on Saturday 6/29 (DK Staff will be working the Parking Lot from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM). If you would like to help out, Discover Klamath will buy your lunch that day. And, you might even get a GAMBLER 500 T-Shirt if any are remaining. It’ll be a fun time greeting “Gamblers” (e.g. Participants) of this 500-Mile Fun Run that only requires one thing: That participants have a beater car worth no more than $500 bucks and which can (hopefully) drive a distance of 500 miles over 3 days. Other than that pretty much anything goes. Join us in welcoming these crazy Gambler 500 Participants by handing out MEET ME IN KLAMATH stickers on either Friday or Saturday June 28 or June 29. Badger Run Wildlife Rehab Folks, we cannot stress this enough. IF YOU CARE, LEAVE IT THERE. Please do not be a fawn-napper! Yesterday evening we received a call from another rehabber in California. A lady in Oregon had called her about a fawn she had taken in & been feeding for a week. She now had decided it was too much work & wanted someone/anyone to take it. She had called 2 Oregon rehabs in her area & didn't like the answer she received. So she then called California hoping someone there could help her correct this mistake. This scenario has so many layers of WRONG. First, the fawn was likely a perfectly healthy fawn that was taken by a well meaning person thinking it needed help. It didn't. Second, it is illegal to raise a fawn like this without permits. Third, having kept this fawn a week they have removed all chances of reuniting it with its mother & have imprinted it on humans. Fourth, imprinted deer usually end up dead within a year or two because they approach humans or exhibit aggressive behavior toward humans once they enter breeding season. Our Oregon Fish & Wildlife district does not allow for rehabs or vets to intake fawns due to disease & overpopulation. This poor little creature will most likely now have to be euthanized by ODFW.

NOAA forecast for this week

Severe Weather Europe: Textbook Kelvin-Helmholtz instability waves over Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia on June 18th! Photo: Amy Hunter via Tim Buckley (TW)

The Arctic spring thaw has begun with a bang, with extensive melting of the Greenland ice sheet and sea ice loss that is already several weeks ahead of normal, scientists said. A stagnant zone of high-pressure air over Greenland last week brought warm air from the south, raising temperatures as much as 40 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. As for Arctic sea ice conditions, a warm May had reduced ice extent from its maximum of 5.7 million square miles in March to 5 million square miles at the end of the month. (As of Sunday, it was down to 4.2 million square miles.) Sea ice loss contributes to the amplification of Arctic warming, as the darker water of open ocean absorbs more sunlight than ice. The average sea ice extent in May is nearly half a million square miles below the average for 1981-2010. Read more Dogs hauled a sled through meltwater last week on ice in northwest Greenland. Severe thunderstorms hit the eastern United States on June 20, 2019, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Some areas received more than 1 month of average June rainfall in just 48 hours. The worst affected states were North and South Carolina where 145,000 customers lost power. As of 09:00 UTC on June 21, 14,613 customers were without power in South Carolina, 11,845 in North Carolina, 10,057 in Virginia and 35,902 in Arkansas. Read more At least 88 people have died and 17 are still missing as a result of severe floods and landslides affecting parts of southwest China since last week. According to official sources, 88 people have been killed, up from 61 on June 14, and 18 are still missing. 388,000 are displaced and over 6 million affected. At least 17,000 homes were destroyed and 82,000 damaged. 5,060 people were rescued and more than 14,000 evacuated. Read more A sudden, high-level eruption started at Raikoke volcano, Sea of Okhotsk, Kuril Islands, Russia at around 17:50 UTC on June 21, 2019. The last time this volcano erupted was back in 1924. According to the Tokyo VAAC, volcanic ash cloud rose up to 13.1 km (43,000 feet) above sea level by 21:40 UTC. A catastrophic eruption in 1778, during which the upper third of the island was said to have been destroyed, prompted the first volcanological investigation in the Kuril Islands two years later. Reports of eruptions in 1777 and 1780 are erroneous (Gorshkov, 1970). Another powerful eruption in 1924 greatly deepened the crater and changed the outline of the island. Read more A series of earthquakes off the Oregon coast were recorded Saturday by the US Geologic Survey, with the strongest registering at 5.4 about 10 kilometers deep. The alert level is green, meaning there is a low likelihood of casualties or damage. The quakes were recorded at 5:43 a.m., 5:52 a.m., 6 a.m., 6:16 a.m., 6:37 a.m. and 6:40 a.m. The quakes registered between a 5.4 and 4.2. The quakes were more than 200 miles west of the Oregon coast. The USGS said the distance between the quakes' epicenter to Bandon was 208 miles, 213 miles to Coos Bay and 221 miles to Newport. At least 571 species of seed-bearing plants have gone extinct around the world in the last two and a half centuries. This number is nearly four times higher than the previous known estimate and more than twice the number of birds, mammals and amphibians that are known to have gone extinct, researchers say. The study estimates that plants are now becoming extinct nearly 500 times faster than the background extinction rate for plants. The geographical pattern of modern plant extinctions resembles that for animals: most plant extinctions occur on islands, in the tropics, and in areas with a Mediterranean climate that are rich in biodiversity. The true figure of plant extinction is also likely to be much higher, the researchers add, since the list includes only those species that scientists have looked for and recorded. Read more The EPA will allow states to use a pesticide that is harmful to bees. The agency made an emergency exception for 11 states to use sulfoxaflor on cotton and sorghum crops. “The only emergency here is the EPA’s reckless approval of this dangerous bee-killing pesticide,” Lori Ann Burd, environmental health director at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a statement. “It’s sickening that even amid the current insect apocalypse, the EPA’s priority is protecting pesticide industry profits.” A study published in Nature last year found sulfoxaflor inhibited bumblebee reproduction. Sulfoxaflor’s use was temporarily barred after a lawsuit from beekeepers in 2015! What happens to your plastic after you drop it in a recycling bin? According to promotional materials from America’s plastics industry, it is whisked off to a factory where it is seamlessly transformed into something new. This is not the experience of Nguyễn Thị Hồng Thắm, a 60-year-old Vietnamese mother of seven, living amid piles of grimy American plastic on the outskirts of Hanoi. Outside her home, the sun beats down on a Cheetos bag; aisle markers from a Walmart store; and a plastic bag from ShopRite, a chain of supermarkets in New Jersey, bearing a message urging people to recycle it. Tham is paid the equivalent of $6.50 a day to strip off the non-recyclable elements and sort what remains: translucent plastic in one pile, opaque in another. A Guardian investigation has found that hundreds of thousands of tons of US plastic are being shipped every year to poorly regulated developing countries around the globe for the dirty, labor-intensive process of recycling. The consequences for public health and the environment are grim.

Last year, the equivalent of 68,000 shipping containers of American plastic recycling were exported from the US to developing countries that mismanage more than 70% of their own plastic waste.

The newest hotspots for handling US plastic recycling are some of the world’s poorest countries, including Bangladesh, Laos, Ethiopia and Senegal, offering cheap labor and limited environmental regulation.

In some places, like Turkey, a surge in foreign waste shipments is disrupting efforts to handle locally generated plastics.

With these nations overwhelmed, thousands of tons of waste plastic are stranded at home in the US As countries like Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand banned imports, records show the plastic waste fanning out to a host of new countries. Shipments began making their way to Cambodia, Laos, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya and Senegal, which had previously handled virtually no US plastic. In the past, it made economic sense to ship the plastic to Asia, because shipping companies that transport China’s manufactured goods to the US end up with thousands of empty shipping containers to carry back. In the absence of American goods to fill them, the companies have been willing to ship out America’s recycling at rock-bottom rates.

“There are 500,000 street collectors in Turkey, working almost like ants to collect the waste,” said Baran Bozoğlu, head of Turkey’s Chamber of Environmental Engineers. Yet he said the “uncontrolled and unlimited” import of foreign recycling was leaving these local recyclers without markets for the scrap they collect. “It’s like we have flour and water and, instead of making our own bread, we import bread from abroad! Does that make any sense to you?’ Every day, Eser Çağlayan, 33, wheels his giant white collecting bag through a booming business district along the shores of the Bosphorus strait, hunting for treasures that people throw out, along with the usual plastic and paper scraps. In the past, Çağlayan, a 20-year-veteran of the scrap-picking trade, was able to feed his family of five with the $800 or so he made every month. But this year, he said, his income was down by about a third due to the competition from cheap, imported recycling. ‘‘I want to tell people in US this: recycle in your own yard,” he said. “Don’t bring down our income and put us all in danger of hunger.’’

A study released this spring by the environmental group Gaia documented the human toll of US plastics exports on the countries that receive them. “The impact of the shift in plastic trade to south-east Asian countries has been staggering – contaminated water supplies, crop death, respiratory illness from exposure to burning plastic, and the rise of organized crime abound in areas most exposed to the flood of new imports,” the report found. “These countries and their people are shouldering the economic, social and environmental costs of that pollution, possibly for generations to come.” Read more

The Quail Trail Schedule has been revised, effective Monday 10/08/2018. The reason for the changes is to aid young adults living in Chiloquin (and surrounding areas) traveling to/from Eagle Ridge High School in Klamath Falls. The students depend on the Quail to get to/from school. Now students may ride Route 2 to get to school, and catch Route 4 to go home after school – cutting their commute time by roughly 4 hours!

By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.
