MOST SUCCESSFUL teams maintain a healthy sense of humour — it gets them through the sticky patches and helps the players appreciate the good moments.

You only have to hear the ribbing among our players (before they burst into song, led by goalkeeper coach Kim Brierley) to know there’s plenty of team spirit in the current crop of Cambridge first teamers.

One constant source of fun is the gentle jibing around the “experience” of forward Jason Szabo, a player who waved goodbye to his thirties a while ago.

I’m not saying he’s sensitive about his age,

Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, sees plenty of value in smiles ...

‘... team spirit will play a major part in helping us pick up vital points ... ’

but he did get grumpy last year when our match reports tagged him as a “veteran”.

Since then, he’s been “wily”, “evergreen” (last week’s WaiBOP website) and even “evervescent”.

Last weekend, he clocked up another birthday and celebrated with two goals in the opening seven minutes against Rotorua United.

The third goal was scored by Quest Tipping, a player less than half Szabo’s age.

As much as anyone over the past two seasons, Szabo has epitomised the character of the Cambridge team. He’s worked hard to build his fitness and is often the first to congratulate or offer support to the youngsters coming into the side.

Most of all, he clearly enjoys his game. We’re a third of the way into the campaign

to defend our WaiBOP Premiership title and we’ve got some big games coming up.

The lessons learned last year will be helpful in keeping up the momentum as winter closes in.

I’m picking that team spirit will play a major part in helping us pick up vital points.

And, like Jason Szabo, we’ll finish the season with a smile ...

Get behind the boys! CAMBRIDGE face star–studded opponents in the next round of football’s Chatham Cup, having drawn five-time winners of the trophy Central United.

CAMBRIDGE’S Jason Szabo closes in on University of Auckland defender Sebastian Salmon.

The second round draw of football’s oldest cup competition means Cambridge will travel to play Central on Queens Birthday Monday at Kiwitea Street, the stadium which is home to national champions Auckland City.

Central act as the winter feeder club for Auckland City who this year retained their status as Oceania Confederation champions and will travel to Japan for the FIFA World Club Cup.

The Central squad, who are currently vying for the lead in the Northern League Premier Division, include a number of players who have played full international and age group international football.

Many of the Central squad are familiar to Cambridge club members having played at John Kerkhof Park for either WaiBOP United or Auckland City during the two summers that ASB Premership games were staged at the ground.

Scott Hilliar, Finn Cochran, Mario Ilich,

Danyon Drake and Reid Drake are all former WaiBOP United players, while the Drake brothers have since played for Auckland City.

Adam Mitchell, the former captain of the New Zealand U-20 team, anchors the Central defence while Central’s skipper, Dean Lausev, is another Auckland City squad member.

Two full Samoan internationals – Joseph Dan-Tyrell and Faitalia Hamilton-Pama – and a Samoan U-17 international, Seli Fuimaono, also feature in the Central squad.

Cambridge will relish the June 6 trip to Kiwitea Street, recently ranked by the NZ Herald as the 7th best sports ground in New Zealand.

While Cambridge will go into the cup tie as the underdogs, the side has won its last seven games in a row, including two rounds of the Chatham Cup in which they beat Auckland’s Colo Boys FC 8-0 and University of Auckland 2-1.

Cambridge, Melville United, Wanderers and Tauranga City United are the only remaining WaiBOP clubs in the last 64 of the cup.

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND provides a great opportunity for our club to get behind our first team as they play two big games in three days.

On Saturday June 4, Cambridge head to Ngongotaha for a league fixture that could play a big part in deciding this season’s WaiBOP Premiership title.

On Monday June 6, the Reds head to Auckland’s Kiwitea St — home of Auckland City FC — for a classic Chatham Cup tie in which we are the underdog.

Let’s get as many supporters to both games and cheer on the team!

CLUB NEWS / www.cambridgesoccer.co.nz

A WAIPA CLUB has won WaiBOP Football’s Club of the Year award for the second time in three years.

Te Awamutu AFC was named Club of the Year at last week’s Annual General Meeting of the regional federation.

Our neighbouring club’s success follows Cambridge FC’s own win in the same award two years ago.

During 2015, Te Awamutu AFC excelled in several areas.

The club had an exceptional membership growth from the previous year of more than 35% (170 to 232 junior and senior members).

They have also forged good working relationships with local schools, achieved their Quality Club Mark Level 1 while administrator, David Hall, was a finalist for Administrator of the Year at the Brian Perry Regional Sports Awards for 2015.

CAMBRIDGE REMAIN in a three-way title chase for the Waikato Women’s League after a comfortable 4-0 win against Waikato Unicol.

The win means Tokoroa, Melville United and Cambridge have emerged as the clubs at the top of the table.

Playing at John Kerkhof Park, Cambridge took the lead after only four minutes when leading goalscorer Astrid Howarth scored.

Steph Bell-Jenkins added the side’s second goal in the 18th minute.

After taking their 2-0 lead into the interval, Howarth added two goals in a three-minute flurry to get her hat-trick and ensure the three points for Cambridge. She has now scored 11 times this season.

This Sunday, the Andrew Taylor–coached women’s team travel to Te Aroha to play the newly–formed Cobras Women team.

Women remain in contention

CLUB NEWS / www.cambridgesoccer.co.nz

Armstrong heads overseas WHEN YOU watch any of the European

Championship matches on television in coming weeks, spare a thought for Cambridge’s Richard Armstrong.

He’ll be trekking around Europe to catch as many games as he can — all part of his long–awaited OE (overseas experience).

A defender and assistant coach for our WaiBOP Championship side, Armstrong has been a key part of helping our club build depth in its top teams.

Two years ago, not long after joining the club, he suffered a bad leg break but his determination and perserverence led to a successful return to the pitch.

The club wishes him all the best for his international adventure and looks forward to his return to New Zealand.

Photo (right): Armstrong in action against Te Awamutu at John Kerkhof Park.

OUR CLUB smashed all sorts of club records on Saturday May 14, hosting the most number of senior matches in a single day.

After a usually–hectic morning of hosting junior football, the club staged six senior men’s matches (and a training game for a Cambridge High School’s girls’ team).

The most the club has held before is four senior games but with $200,000 of new changing rooms, the club’s army of volunteers worked hard to ensure six games went smoothly. In the kitchen, Michaela and Ali McQuarters led the catering effort,

delivering more than 200 hot meals for home and visiting players after their matches.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: On Saturday June 4, our club is supplying car park attendants for the Harness Jewels event at Cambridge Raceway, but we need more volunteers to help.

The club will receive a donation of $1,000 to go towards our junior grounds improvement project so even a couple hours of help will make a big difference.

OtumoetaiFounded: 1964

Ground: Ferguson Park

Last season: 6th

Today’s visitors, Otumoetai FC, formed in 1964 as a small club catering for just a few players.

These days, the club fields many teams from five-year-olds to veterans, sharing their facilities with five other groups as part of the Otumoetai Sport and Recreation Club Inc.

Originally based at Belluevue Park, the club moved to Ferguson Park in 1975 and benefitted from a doubling in size of their clubroom facilities in 1988. After two years trialling a joint effort programme, 1994 saw the Albion Cricket Club formally amalgamated with the soccer club to become Otumoetai Sport and Recreation Club Inc. This gives the facilities at Ferguson Park all–year usage and the Tauranga Astronomy Club and the Matua Scouts and Guides have also adopted the expanded clubrooms as their home.

In its early days, the teams played in light blue after the colours used by Cambridge University, England. 1951: The club held its first formal

meeting on March 20, 1951, appointing Viv Butler as its first president, and R.S.Entwistle as its patron.

Butler’s support of English club Arsenal led to a change of club colours and from the mid-1950s, Cambridge teams have played in red and white strips. 1957: The club played its home games

on the Town Square until 1957 when a two-room wooden shed was built on the Leamington Domain for £134.19. 1964: On December 1, 1964, the

Cambridge Borough Council agreed to provide the club with land on the town belt in Vogel Street and plans were drawn up for the clubrooms to be built. 1967: The club moved into the Vogel St

grounds, where it has been based since. The grounds were renamed John Kerkhof Park after Dutch immigrant John Kerkhof who, with members of his family and other supporters, built the clubrooms and changing facilities.

The grounds are now owned by the Waipa District Council but leased to the club on a long-term basis. 1972: The club applied for its senior

men’s team to join the Northern League competition. 1974: Extensions to the clubrooms

and playing fields became necessary and were built in 1974, with new junior grounds established beside the Polo Club grounds further north on Vogel St. 1978: The club elected its first women

committee member. 1983: Junior teams (11,12 and 13 year

olds) entered the Waikato competitions for

the first time in 1983. 1984: The club achieved its first

significant success at senior level, winning the Northern League’s 4th Division in 1984. 1993: The club reached new heights

in 1993, winning the Northern League 2nd

division. 1995: The club built a concrete car

park that’s still in use today. The car park is where the club sometimes erects temporary grandstands for major fixtures. 2005: The Waipa District Council

divisions into the Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division Two to rebuild under coach Karl Dagnall and won promotion in 2012 to Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division One.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club. 2013: Cambridge FC and the

neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park.

In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side.

In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United.

This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system. 2014: The club's first team finished

runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup.

The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014.

In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community.

WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches.

Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club).

The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014. 2015: As the club entered its 68th season,

it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football.

It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts.

In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/changing rooms for local and visiting players.

On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20

international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament.

Programme cuts injury risk CAMBRIDGE FC are getting behind a warm–up programme that has been proven to reduce the risk of injuries by 30%.

It’s the FIFA 11+ Complete Warm-Up Programme for youth and senior players and Senior Men’s Club Captain Lee Turpett and U–13 youth coach Steve Thomas recently attended a NZ Football–WaiBOP Football workshop to learn how it works.

The programme has direct performance benefits for footballers — making fitter, faster and more agile players as well as reducing the risk of all injuries by 30%.

It is designed to be delivered by coaches, is easy to learn and implement into existing training sessions and completion of the course results in FIFA 11+ certification in as

little as two hours. The All Whites and Football Ferns have

been using FIFA 11+ for some time and all the ASB Premiership teams undertook to use it last summer season.

WaiBOP Football plans to encourage all 106 affiliated clubs and schools to adopt the programme, and is running workshops to team club representatives how to use it.

So what is FIFA 11+?“The programme takes 15–20 minutes

to do and is designed to replace a standard warm–up,” explains NZ Football’s doctor, Mark Fulcher.

“If it is done twice a week, it reduces the risk of injury by 30% and the risk of severe injury by 50%. These are things like an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury in the knee.”
