Bootle ended Maine Road’s title chances with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Manchesterside at the Delta Taxi stadium.

The Bucks started brightly and could have been in front inside the first five minutes. MichaelYoung's corner was met by Jamie Hay at the near post, but Hay’s header cannoned off the postout for a goal kick. Two minutes later and the Bucks were denied a stonewall penalty. JamieHay’s ball was flicked on by Sam Willkie;Willkie’s header landed perfectly into the path offJamie Rainford, whose shot clearly struck the arm of the Maine Road defender, but the refereewaved away the appeals of the Bootle players and supporters.

Jamie Rainford then had two glorious opportunities to give the Bucks the lead. First MichaelRoberts pass found Rainford who shot from 20-yards was superbly tipped round the post byMaine Road goalkeeper Gregory Hall. Michael Young then done superbly on the right handside, stealing the ball before nipping in past the road defender - he then pulled the ball backbeautifully into the path of Rainford - Rainford however could only fire over from twelve yardsout.

Rainford was once again instrumental in Bootle’s attacking play. This time Rainford found ChrisTyson, who then found Sam Willkie on the edge of the area. Willkie then fed Tom Peterson, who cut inside but could only fire over. Four minutes later the Bucks were made to pay for theirmissed chances, as Maine Road took an undeserved lead against the run of play. PeterConnors did superbly down the right after Mark Kilroy failed to stay on his feet. Connors' crosswas met inside the area by Jonathan Mason who headed Road into the lead.

Bootle rallied well and could have gone into half-time level. Tom Peterson’s superb cross wasmet by Michael Roberts whose header rolled the wrong side of the far post.

Eleven minutes into the second half and Bootle finally drew level. Michael Roberts donesuperbly done the right hand side before ghosting past the full back. Roberts then pulled theball back into the path of Sam Willkie, whose first time shot found the bottom corner of theDodge Kop net. The goal was no more than Bootle deserved.

Bootle keeper Dean Porter was called into action on the hour mark. Porter saved well gettingdown low to turn away Neil Chappell’s goal bound effort. Tom Peterson then had a goldenopportunity to give the Bucks the lead. Mark Kilroy’s superb pass was touched eloquently byJamie Rainford into the path of Peterson, who failed to get any real power behind his effortwhich was comfortably stopped by Hall. Manager Joe Doran brought on Jay Riley for Petersonand Riley had an instant impact. Latching onto a long ball over the top before unleashing a leftfooted strike which bounced over Hall and into the Dodge Kop net, giving the Bucks a well-earned and deserved lead. It was the second time in two weeks that a Doran substitution hadthe desired effect.

Despite Maine Road throwing everything at the Bootle defence in the dying moments of thegame nothing was getting past the superb centre back duo of Neil McQueen and captain for theafternoon Jamie Hay, who stood firm and dealt with everything the Maine Road attack threw atthem. The victory was a hard-fought and at times a battle but no more than Bootle deserved.Despite the horrific weather conditions, the way the Bucks tried to play football was to beadmired. It is now five unbeaten for newly named North West Counties Premier Divisionmanager of the month Joe Doran.

The original Bootle FC were formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road(next to the cricket ground). They were in fact Everton FC’s biggest rivals.Bootle were the first team to win the Liverpool Senior Cup competition andnarrowly missed out on becoming a founder member of the football league,to Everton.

In 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the new Football Alliance, which soon became the second division (now the championship!). Thatseason was the most successful as we finished league runners-up,reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where we lost to BlackburnRovers (0-7). When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892,Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out afterone season and seemingly disappeared due to financial problems. BootleFC’s place in the football league was taken by Liverpool FC.

Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic. waslater formed with the new team initially playing in the Liverpool Leagues. In1948 the club moved to nearby Bootle Stadium and were elected to theLancashire Combination 2, which was won at the first attempt. However,Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrewand folded during the 1953–54 campaign.

In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton and played in the localleagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination(which we won on numerous occasions) the club reverted back to it’s It’sbetter known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973; and a year later joined theLancashire Combination, which we won in 1976 and 1977. Bootle thenjoined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was wonin our first season, and we were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 theCheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form theNorth West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming amember of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the FirstDivision until 2000 when we unfortunately dropped into the SecondDivision. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into theLiverpool County Combination as Bucks Park was consigned to history. In2006 the club, with a new ground, were elected back into Division 2 of theNorth West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCLPremier Division and also won the Championship. In 2009/10, our firstseason back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a NWCFLhighest placing of 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rdplace again in 2012.

2013 saw Bootle come so close to promotion, narrowly missing out withthree games to go, and eventually finishing 3rd again. However they putthat disappointment aside to win the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first timein 124 years.

Hello to all supporters players committee of both BootleFC and our visitors Abbey Hey and welcome back to thedelta taxis stadium.

We've had a good run of form since the turn of the yearand I'm keen to keep the momentum as we continuethrough the season. Today's game is very important to theme and I will not be underestimating our opposition in anyway. Abbey Hey are a good side and they beat us in thesemi final of this competition a few years ago.

We had a terrific result against Maine Road and it was themanner of the win, how hard we worked from the first kick that was mostpleasing.

We've had the draw for the senior cup and we have been drawn against Evertonat home in the semi final for the third time since 2010, we haven't beaten themyet so let's hope we can this time around. The date will be out as soon as itsconfirmed.

We have a few players who have been injured coming back now which gives memore options. It has also meant that Lee Thompson’s short term deal has cometo an end and he has returned to Runcorn Linnets. I would like to thank Lee forreturning for the weeks he was here.

Thanks for taking the time to read my programme notes and I hope you enjoy thegame.

Please show your support - theplayers and I are extremely gratefulof it.

Thanks

Joe

Doran Endorses Squad SizeBootle manger Joe Doran believes the key to success in the North West Counties, is asquad with strength in depth. Doran who has added six new faces to his squad sincethe turn of the year admitted it was the AFC Liverpool game which made him act soswiftly.

Doran said: "After the AFC Liverpool I knew I had to act quick and freshen things up intime for our next game, away at Squires Gate. "The performance against AFCLiverpool was no were near good enough and probably the worst I have seen from aBootle team in six years".

Doran now believes his Bootle team have strength in depth all over the pitch."We nowhave 18 to 19 players at training and that's not including the two goalkeepers.”

"We also had to release some of the younger lads back down to the reserves as theresimply isn't enough room."

Doran also, expressed his delight at the impact his substitutes had in recentweeks."The difference also, in this league is having players who can come off thebench and make an instant impact. Just like Jamie Rainford did at Abbey Hey and JayRiley did against Maine Road".

Doran also expressed his delight at his sides most recent victory against Maine Road."To come from one down and show the character we did was great, it was the first timesince I had taken over that we had gone a goal down and recovered to win".

Despite the award Doran is refusing to get carried away. "We have to just take it onegame at a time. We have set no specific targets of we're we have to finish at the end ofthe season. We our just going to focus on each game as it comes".

Doran's side are currently six unbeaten in all competitions and seen his side climb tofourth in the table and set a mouth watering tie against Everton in the Liverpool SeniorCup semi-finals

Abbey Hey FC was formed in 1902 in the AbbeyHey district of Gorton, some three miles away fromthe centre of Manchester. During their formativeyears and through the two World Wars, the club was disbanded andreformed on a number of occasions. Starting in the Church SundayLeagues, they progressed through the Manchester Amateur Leaguesduring the intervening years but the club really came into it's own in the1960s after it took in the players of the Admiralty Gunning EngineeringDepartment (AGED) following it's closure. Alf Gentry, the Manager of AbbeyHey at this point, decided that with the influx of new players he would stepdown in favour of the AGED Manager, Danny Danson. Alf, who had beenfor many years the prime mover of the club, stayed on in a senior positionand shared in the success that the club would have in the coming years. The new players made up the backbone of the club during the decade withsome staying on after their playing careers had ended.

Most notable of these was Allan Vaughan, who occupied the positions ofTreasurer and Secretary. Ken Brown also stayed on; becoming managerafter Danny Danson had retired, and won numerous honours culminating in1978 with the club deciding to apply for a position in the ManchesterLeague. The application was successful and the following year the clubbegan playing in the 2nd Division of the Manchester League, achievingpromotion in their first season. Reaching this position meant that the clubhad to find an enclosed ground suitable for playing their home games. Thenearest ground available at the time was in Chorlton at Werburghs Road.

The ground was owned by a car dealership (Lookers) but was being usedby a local school. It was agreed that if Abbey Hey FC carried out someImprovements, such as installing showers in the dressing rooms, theycould rent the ground. After two years, Lookers reneged on the deal and theclub was forced out, this time to a ground nearer home at Godfreys (thearea was named after a prominent local Councillor, Godfrey Erman, whodonated the ground to the local populace of Abbey Hey for their use as arecreational area). The next eighteen years were fairly successful with theclub winning the Gilchrist Cup under Managers Jim Whittaker and DaveDenby and a League title but this ended when Abbey Hey FC were told thatas from the start of the new season they would not be allowed to useGodfreys.

This despite the large amounts of money that they had spent on drainage anddespite assurances when they had taken over the derelict ground that as long asAbbey Hey had a football team this would be their ground.

A temporary home, at the old English Steel ground, was arranged on a seasonto season basis with the owners at theme, Clayton Analine but after only 2 years, the ground was sold to a local builder who required the land to build houses on.During the two years the club were based at the ground, negotiations withCrossley Motors Ltd had been taking place to buy a disused ground they owned inGoredale Avenue, Gorton. Unfortunately, the land was not in good order and wasbecoming an eyesore with fences falling down and people using it for fly- tipping.Contractors working for the council had tipped 1,000 tons of hardcore onto the carpark to prevent access to the ground.

Matters had reached an impasse between Abbey Hey FC and Crossleys whenManchester City Council stepped in, They informed Crossleys that if anagreement was not made with the people that they were dealing with, the groundwould be the subject of a compulsory purchase order. This tipped the scales infavour of the football club who were asked to make an offer for the ground whichwas promptly accepted. Legal representation and a bank loan were quicklyarranged and in 1984 the club at last had their own home. The bank loan was paidoff and the ground was improved including having the fly tipped hardcore removedfrom the ground. These improvements to the ground could only have beenachieved by the hard work and dedication of the committee, who not only raisedthe money to carry out the improvements but also carried out 90% of the workthemselves.

Jim Clark was to join during these turbulent times as manager, a position he wasto occupy for the next 18 years. The club went on to gain success in theManchester League during the late eighties and early nineties, winning thePremier Division Championship on five occasions during this period. In 1997, afterfinishing 2nd in the Manchester Premier Division, the club applied for membershipof The North West Counties League. Following a ground grading visit by LeagueOfficials, the club was accepted into the 2nd Division for the 1998 season. AbbeyHey's first season in the North West Counties League couldn't have been moreexciting. Although Fleetwood Freeport had taken the Division Two title, therunners-up place was still to be decided. On the last Saturday of the season anyone of three clubs could have taken second place, but it was Abbey's 3-2 win atDarwen that clinched promotion to Division One in their first season inthe league.

Promotion to the 1st Division meant that the club had to install floodlights. True toform, they designed, ordered, erected and wired them within a couple of months. The biggest job during the ground improvements was the building of the newclubhouse and dressing rooms. Planning permission was given with the majorityof work once again being carried out by the clubs own members.

To finance this project, low interest loans were taken out from The FA with theremainder of the money achieved through fund raising schemes. In their first seasonin the top flight, Abbey Hey had a tremendous start, topping the table at one pointearly in the season, but a drop in form saw them finish mid table. Still, a highlycreditable first season in Division One and they had more than proved themselvesworthy of their rapid rise from the Manchester League to the NWCFL Division One.

2000/01 again saw Abbey finish in a comfortable mid table position, proving thatthe season before had been no fluke, but the following season started with a run ofpoor results including some heavy defeats. The second half of the year saw animprovement which lifted the club away from any relegation threat but at the end ofthe season, manager Jim Clark decided to resign. This ended an eighteen year stintin management in which he had overseen many of Abbey Hey's finest moments.

Jim's replacement for 2002/03 was Tony Hancock, previously Woodley SportsReserve Team manager, who also brought Paul Kirkham from Woodley as hisassistant. It was their first attempt at management at this level of football and AbbeyHey's final position of 13th showed that they rose to the challenge. During theseason, Calum Dempsey won the NWCFL player of the month award forSeptember and goalkeeper Liam Higginbottom won the October safe hands' award. However, at the end of their first season in charge, Tony and Paul left the club toretun to Woodley Sports as managers of the first team. There was some celebrationas Abbey Hey reached their 100th birthday and also reached the 3rd round proper(last 64) of the FA Vase. The club has played in the FA Cup for the first time sincethe turn of the millennium, but have only won one tie, a victory over Bamber Bridgeon penalties in 2002-03, to reach the First Qualifying Round for the only time.

Jim Vince took over for 2003/04 but after a good start to the season, things wentwrong. Despite only losing five out of their last ten games, the club ended secondfrom bottom, only avoiding relegation due to the changes made to the non leaguestructure. Jim Vince opted to resign and Chris Bailey took over knowing that amajor team rebuilding job was required. In 2004 ten members of the committeewere given long service awards for their 25 years of service in Grass Roots Footballby The Manchester FA. The 2005/2006 season improved their best league finish bytwo places, but both the team and the club then started to struggle. A lack of bothfinancial backing and foresight saw the club slowly drop down the league table inthe following seasons until 2009/10 saw them eventually hit rock bottom. In 2009/10Abbey Hey was half way through the season with only 4 points to their name and inthe basement position in the league after 25 games. However, following theappointments of Barrie Walker as Manager and Andrew Harris as AssistantManager in November 2009, Abbey Hey made several new signings with the likesof Jon-Paul Lewis, Gareth Wager, Daniel Cocks, John Hardy, Darren Evans, LeeKnowles and Nathan Finnigan joining the club. This signalled a turn in fortune forthe club as they picked up 30 points in the 2nd half of the season however it wasn'tenough and they were relegated from the North West Counties Premier Division. The form in the second of the season saw Abbey Hey going all the way to the

Ladies Travel to Jericho Lane(weather permitting!!)

Over a month has passed since the ladies have kicked aball in anger, however fingers crossed they are in actionthis weekend as they travel to Jericho lane to take onSouth Liverpool Ladies.

The reverse fixture earlier on in the season saw Bootlecome out 3-0 winners, hopefully we can repeat thisscoreline at the weekend.

final of the Vodkat League Challenge Cup beating the likes of Ashton Athletic FCand Bootle FC along the way. Abbey Hey beat Winsford Utd 3-0 in the final andlifted the trophy.

Walker and Harris made the decision to blood young local talent, realising thatthis would serve the club well in the future but that it would take time to reap itsrewards. Abbey made a slow start to life in the NWCFL First Division 2010/2011and departed all cup competitions at the initial stages. However, Octobersignalled a change in fortunes and wins at Atherton Collieries, Daisy Hill andWigan Robin Park pointed to a brighter 2011. The introduction of quality playerssuch as Antal Tompos, Luke Gibson and Martin Pilkington started to paydividends though the results did not always reflect this. Unfortunately, the team'shome form was to be their downfall as far as progressing up the league tablealthough the team were usually beaten only by the odd goal.

For the 2011/12 season, Walker's youth policy started to pay quick dividends asthe team has made an excellent start to the league season, remaining in the topfour of Division One from day one. Though a run of poor results saw them exitthe NWCFL Challenge Cup, FA Vase and 1st Division Trophy they did take thenotable scalp of Evo Stik North team Radcliffe Borough in the first round of theManchester Cup. The season really stepped up a gear as they moved into 2012with Abbey at one point pushing Wigan Robin Park and Norton United for one ofthe two promotion places. Though they were to ultimately finish in 3rd place, theseason had been an undoubted success as Walker had built a promotionchallenging team in just 2 seasons.

The 2012/13 campaign started better than anyone at the club could haveimagined as the team went unbeaten in the league for the first 3 months.Although unsuccessful in the FA vase, they would eventually reach the latterstages of the FA Cup qualifiers and a plum tie at FC Halifax via fantastic wins atSt Helens Town and Sheffield. Rarely stepping out of the top two in DivisionOne, Abbey continued to rack up league wins whilst also moving thru theChallenge Cup, Div One Trophy and Manchester Premier Cup rounds. The firstteam success was also matched by the newly introduced youth team set up.Both Under 17s and 18s topped their respective Youth Alliance Divisions duringthe year and impressed many with their style of play and application. As themonths progressed a few of the older youth players started to appear in the firstteam, boding well for the future. Come April and a win at Northwich Villaeventually sealed promotion back into the top flight of the NWCFL ladder.
